LOCAL Thorpdale potato farmers who supplied Oakville Produce may not ever receive the hundreds of thousands of dollars they are owed for supplying the fresh produce organisation with their potatoes after the company went into receivership. Seed potato grower Des Jennings, who has 62 hectares of potatoes growing on his 330ha Thorpdale farm said he has “a hell of a shortage in cash flow” as a result of Oakville Produce’s downfall in which he has been supplying potatoes to for the past seven years. “There was a period of time before they went into receivership where we were supplying potatoes to them that we have not yet been paid for and we may never be paid for,” he said. “The administrators have told us we are guaranteed to be paid after they took over, but the six weeks prior to that we won’t get paid...until maybe it is all wound up, but we don’t know. “We haven’t had any sizeable income since January and we still have to now run a

business with 10 wages to pay, electricity and fuel bills that come in monthly, and we have to pay the fertiliser and chemical bills that are outstanding,” Mr Jennings added. Alongside growing commercial potatoes for Oakville Produce, the second generation farmer grows carrots and runs Border Leicester Merino cross ewes and Dorset meat lambs alongside his predominately Angus cows and Limousin bull in order to “utilise his land in other ways”. “If it wasn’t for the sheep and cattle we would be in a worse position. “I mean, we are behind the eight ball now and we just can’t pay those people we owe money to. “You only make a little bit of money anyway growing potatoes, so we have done other things,” he said.
