Of cattle dreams and heartbreak Mother and daughter cattle team, Deborah and Sapphire Halliday, are grabbing life by the horns.
MUST BE LOVE: Sapphire Halliday gained her love of Charolais cattle from her late father Garnet Halliday.
GARNET Halliday’s tragic death may have prevented him from accomplishing his dream of owning a prominent cattle stud, but his surviving wife and daughter have courageously turned his dream into their reality. The 2016 Royal Melbourne Show was a pivotal moment for Deborah and Sapphire Halliday of Waterford Charolais. The mother and daughter team walked away with a swag of first-placed ribbons, including Best Sire’s Progeny and Best Young Bull. And not only did their heifer take out the Junior Championship, she also sold for a whopping $14,000. But it was a long, hard road to taste sweet victory, and even then it had a hint of bitterness.
“That show is where it all came together,” says an emotional Sapphire, who at just 28 years of age runs Waterford Charolais with her mother Deborah. “It was a very conflicting day for me. “All our dreams we’d worked so hard for were coming true… but Dad wasn’t there.” Ten years ago the Halliday family was thrown into turmoil when Sapphire’s father, mining executive Garnet Halliday, was tragically killed in a plane crash in south-eastern Africa.

Cattle dreams and cattle heartbreak „ From page 1
“I can clearly remember when I found out,â€? says Deborah of her husband’s death. “The CEO of his company called me and I knew immediately – I didn’t have to be told. “And I just became numb.â€? Sapphire, who was 18 at the time, was at the hairdressers when her mum got the call. As soon as she returned home, her mother made her a cup of tea and she knew something was wrong. “She told me there had been a tragic accident,â€? Sapphire remembers. “But I just laughed at her and didn’t believe it. “Later, I saw it on the news and I went hysterical. “It was just unbelievable; my dad was such a giant of a personality.â€? Born in 1957, Garnet Halliday was a big name in the corporate mining sector, but like his dad before him, he’d always dreamed of cattle farming. His accountant father Carl Halliday owned one of the ďŹ rst Charolais studs in Australia. Deborah was also involved in the mining industry, and that’s exactly where she met her husband for the ďŹ rst time. “We were both working for the largest mine in Australia at that time,â€? says Deborah. “I grew up in Perth and was a real city girl, but he always wanted to be a farmer. “So, we bought our ďŹ rst farm on the Swan River in Western Australia, which came with some Belted Galloway cattle.â€? The family moved around with Garnet’s work and they spent time in Orange in New South Wales and even South Africa. Upon their return to Australia they settled in Victoria, where a young Sapphire began taking horse lessons in Mount Macedon. While taking her to lessons they would often admire a farming property they drove past called Barree. One day they went past as usual and saw a for sale sign – so they bought it. The property was formerly home to the Archway stallion line that produced famed win-

ners like Grand Archway and She’s Archway. It was also once linked to notorious Melbourne gangster Tony Mokbel and his brother Horty, who worked at the farm when it was owned by the Saade family. But with the Hallidays now in residence, it wasn’t a horse stud they were looking to establish, but a Charolais one. Their ďŹ rst bull came from the Rosedale Stud in NSW and Deborah knew the one she wanted as soon as she saw it. “I saw Rosedale Quadrella and I fell in love with him,â€? she says. “I put my hand up to bid on him, and he was ours.â€? Quadrella was a wise choice and went on to become a Sydney Royal Easter Show champion and Garnet’s stud was on its way. “My dad was working in Africa while I was doing my VCE and I would spend all of my school holidays there,â€? remembers Sapphire. But Garnet still managed to run the farm from the other side of the world.
“We would be on the phone three times a day,â€? laughs Deborah. “He would micro manage the whole thing from afar. “Thankfully, because the farm had previously been a horse stud it was set up with laneways and gateways, which made it more manageable to run on my own.â€? In 2007, at the age of 50, Garnet was looking to retire from his day job at the end of the year and pursue his lifelong ambition of raising a truly notable Charolais stud. But his heartbreaking death in March of that year seemingly derailed it all. “I had just ďŹ nished high school and wanted to take the year off to travel,â€? says Sapphire. “And then my whole world fell apart.â€? But Deborah pushed on. “I just focused on moving forward,â€? she says. “I wanted to make his dream a reality.â€? They went ahead and bought a John Deere tractor because Garnet had always wanted one.
Then purchased the bull Palgrove B-Double for $40,000, which was a sky-high price for them at the time, but he was what they needed to get the stud going – and he indeed became an inuential sire. Not long after, Sapphire
started showing cattle, where she has proven to be very successful, and is now on the Victorian Charolais committee. But two women running their own cattle stud is still a rare thing in this day and age. “I’m not going to lie, it has
been hard, says Sapphire. “I mean, Dad used to sell bulls at the pub with the boys, and some just dislike dealing with a woman. “But now our reputation is helping a lot, so I don’t notice it as much. But Deborah says farming is a hard job, no matter who you are. “You just have to overcome obstacles in your business. “And we certainly haven’t done it alone. “You don’t get these kinds of results without a support network and lots of other people helping you. “And the truth is, sometimes a woman doesn’t have the strength and stamina of a man, but if you do it smartly, you can overcome any problems. Deborah is very proud of her daughter and says the years have been especially challenging for Sapphire following the loss of her dad. “Farming is like life in a lot of ways, says Deborah. “It’s very hard and you go through the long drought, but you have to keep pushing on. The pair has indeed kept pushing on and turned Waterford stud into a true success story. “My husband was an amazing person and we admired him so much. “And what was once his dream has become our dream.

Demand for local garlic chefs’ cooking and our demand for good quality, locally sourced produce is growing,” Ms Green said. “The Andrews Labor Government recognises the importance of all our food and fibre industries and is getting on with supporting the sector to realise its full potential on the global market.” Demand from Australian consumers for good quality, locally sourced produce is growing and Victoria’s horticulture industry is looking to increase the amount and diversity of garlic grown locally.
PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for Regional Victoria, Danielle Green, last week joined members of the Australian Garlic Industry Association and South Melbourne Market stall holders to celebrate the official opening of Victoria’s 2017 garlic season. Ms Green met with stall holders and growers to discuss the different garlic varieties being grown in Australia and taste some of the specially prepared garlic dishes on offer at South Melbourne Market’s restaurants. “Garlic is a favourite ingredient in many home

A FAMILY AFFAIR: Steven Castle and his wife Rachel work together every day.
From the paddock to the customer In a couple of sentences, give our readers a quick snapshot of your farm. Here at Koallah Farm in Camperdown we have a dairy and beef property which has been in our family for several generations. More recently we have moved into beef production and to support that we have built our own on-farm meat abattoirs. So, we process our own beef and other people’s beef, lamb, pork, venison, goat, alpaca, llama and everything else. Effectively, we have started to direct-market our products and we own and operate a couple of butcher shops in Melbourne as well. We have slowly but surely began to control the supply chain from the paddock to the customer.
How long have you been a farmer? There have been four generations of my family dairy farming on this same property. I have only been back on the farm for 10 or so years and my focus has been value adding, and my father is still heavily involved in on-farm operations. Tell us about your family. My wife Rachel actively works in the business and we work together every day. We have two young children that are both in early primary school. Everyone is actively involved in the farm. Best advice or farming tip you have received? Big isn’t always better. Describe your perfect day. We are lucky to live in a good part of the country and
when the weather is nice it is good to be out and about with the animals and out of the day-to-day grind of the abattoir environment. It’s good to get out with the cattle. What is the best thing about being a farmer? The flexibility and being in control of your own destiny (to an extent). What is the worst thing about being a farmer? Unpredictability of your income. Especially in the dairy industry. If you could be someone else for a day, who would that be and why? The Prime Minister. I think you could make a pretty big impact if you just had one day to get some ideas through.

GAME meats have seen a renewed interest in a food fashion obsessed world, with chefs and consumers alike desperate to find that something different that stands out from the crowd. But 70-year-old Healesville farmer Ken Lang has seen the game trend come and go since first farming deer more than 30 years ago. “Now we see venison and wild boar and other game meats popping up all over the place and on television,” he says. But Mr Lang has already been through the boom and bust before. “There are only five per cent of the deer farmers left from the boom in the 1990s,” he says. The market at the time became flooded with local deer and more still were pouring in from New Zealand. Mr Lang knew he wouldn’t survive unless he diversified, so he jumped on the next boom on the horizon. “I could see emus coming, but I knew it wouldn’t last long because they’re just so easy to breed.” Almost overnight the farmed emu population went from zero to a million. Mr Lang was wise enough to know it wouldn’t last long and sold all his birds and incubators just months before the roof blew off the industry. “There are only two emu processors in all of Victoria now, and we still sell for one of them.” These days at Yarra Valley Game Meats, Mr Lang offers up a whole host of exotic animals, sourced from all over Australia for restaurants, hotels and other distributors. Wild boar, camel, wallaby, crocodile, pheasant, quail,
Healesville farmer Ken Lang has been on the game meat front line for more than 30 years. pigeon and buffalo are just to name a few. But it was deer that got him started all those years ago. “It was in 1978 that I bought this 60 acre block that I still run today,” he remembers. Back then, Mr Lang was a bricklayer by trade living in the north east Melbourne suburb of Warrandyte and he came upon the property at an unexpected time. “My mate had just bought a new .30-30 rifle and we thought we’d go out the back blocks of Healesville and let off a few rounds,” laughs Mr Lang. “We didn’t realise how noisy the thing was going to be. “So, we got out of there and went in to town to grab a bite to eat.” The two men browsed the windows of the local shops as they waited for their hamburgers and casually stopped to look at the local real estate, where the agent came out to greet them. “I’d thought about buying property in the past, more as a tax deduction, but he convinced me to come back one day and take a look around.” The agent showed him a few places, and as is often the case, Mr Lang fell in love with his future property at first sight. Once acquired, he immediately stocked it with Horned Herefords. “It wasn’t long until I realised you can’t make money with 60 acres worth of cattle,” says Mr Lang. He then had an opportunity to get in on an emerging 1980s market – deer. “I went out and bought 20 does and a couple of bucks and agisted them until I
could get my high fences up. “It grew bit by bit from there.” Mr Lang was only running fallow deer at the time, but eventually found another farmer that had some red deer, so they started a small business called Valley Venison. “We just took two animals, one red and one fallow, to Yarra Junction abattoir and they both sold straight away. “So we were up and racing.” Mr Lang began to ramp up his numbers, and in 1990 he came to a crossroads in his life. “I was going through a lot of personal things, and I wasn’t sure what to do with my job in the building industry and the farm and everything.” As fate would have it, he met a lady in a similar position and they connected. “She really encouraged me to give away my trade and focus on the farm. “Without her I wouldn’t have done it.” That lady turned out to be his future wife, Mary. Now working full time on the farm, he could see there were too many others in the marketplace and that he needed to branch out. But before he even diversified into emu, he started on kangaroos when a customer asked for them – though it proved to be a tricky proposition. At that stage it was still illegal to sell roo meat in Victoria, so he imported kangaroo tails from South Australia and “bent the rules a bit”. “We eventually got that changed – on a technicality I presented to them.

“Because every other state sold kangaroo for human consumption.” Today, he’s still forced to import kangaroo from interstate, as Victorian law continues to prevent wild game like deer and kangaroo to be taken locally for human consumption – something Mr Lang sees as a wasted opportunity. “There are 100,000 deer shot in Victoria every year and they are mostly left to rot in the bush,” Mr Lang snaps. “It’s a disgrace and a bloody waste. “The shooting needs to be done to get the numbers down, but no one is allowed to process it for commercial use.” Fortunately, the government are now looking at a possible trial to use wild deer and kangaroo for pet consumption. “At least it’s a start, but I don’t know if the law will change in my lifetime.” But Mr Lang admits there’s no simple solution and that handling deer is no easy task. “Deer aren’t like cattle, where you can open a gate and push them through – people can get really hurt. “Eight people have been

It’s a disgrace and a bloody waste. - KEN LANG killed by stags in Australia over the years.” Mr Lang has to herd the deer himself, as they won’t hesitate to turn on a dog. “This time of year, the wild ones will start coming down to my property and smash my fences to get to my does. “They can get very aggressive during the rutting season. “It’s not odd for them to kill each other.” Mr Lang had his own runin with a red deer last year. “I drove into the paddock on my quad and as soon as I saw him I knew I was in trouble.” The stag charged, hitting the back wheel and almost rolling the bike.
Mr Lang hit the throttle, but knew he wasn’t getting out in time. “He charged me again, hitting the front and had the bike up in the air about three feet. “If the trailer wasn’t on, the bike would’ve flipped and I wouldn’t have survived to tell the story.” After smashing up the front of the bike, the deer eventually backed off for a moment, so Mr Lang made his move and charged on the beast itself, hitting it square in the legs with the quad. The risky move paid off, spooking the deer while Mr Lang made his escape. “He still knows he had me. “So, after this year’s rut I’ll hang him on my wall.” He says the females can be just as dangerous. “Other animals can’t go anywhere near a red deer fawn – I’ve seen foxes stomped to pieces.” But despite their difficult nature, he refuses to turn his back on deer. “I’m starting to slow down now with aches and pains and I recently busted a bicep tendon. “But I still love working with them and I think I’ll be doing it until I’ve breathed my last.”
THE LONG HAUL: More than 30 years on, game farmer and supplier Ken Lang still loves working with deer.

Red-letter day for rabbit management THIS year marks a huge turning point in pest rabbit management for Australia, with the national mail out of information to drive the release of RHDV1 K5, the Korean strain of a naturally-occurring rabbit virus first released here in 1996. NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) invasive species manager, Quentin Hart, said information kits have been mailed to 265 community release sites prior to the release of RHDV1 K5. “The community is leading and managing the strategic re-
lease of the virus across NSW, with support from NSW DPI and Local Land Services,” Mr Hart said. Release of RHDV1 K5 is planned nationally in March 2017 as part of Australia’s 20-year plan to reduce negative impacts on agriculture, the environment and communities through managing rabbit populations. National release of RHDV1 K5 has been delivered through the Invasive Animals CRC, with major financial and in kind resources provided by the Australian and NSW governments,
CSIRO, Meat & Livestock Australia, Australian Wool Innovation and Foundation for Rabbit Free Australia. Information kits include specific instructions on how to manage and monitor rabbit control programs, including RHDV1 K5 and conventional management. DPI advises rabbit owners to vaccinate domestic rabbits and provide additional protection against the virus and myxomatosis by keeping rabbits inside or in insect-proof enclosures. Pet owners should contact a veterinarian for advice on how
to protect their rabbits, with online information available from the Australian Veterinary Association http://www.ava. com.au/rabbit-calicivirus. The European rabbit is Australia’s most destructive agricultural pest animal, costing more than $200 million in lost agricultural production annually and wreaking havoc on the environment and biodiversity, affecting 304 threatened native plant and animal species. WATERSHIP TO GO DOWN: The nation-wide rollout of RHDV1 K5, the Korean-strain rabbit virus starts now.

FARM WORLD
FARM WORLD
AT LARDNER PARK
FOOD & FIBRE
Come celebrate 50 years of Farm World at Lardner Park
THIS year marks the 50th anniversary of Farm World at Lardner Park, and Victoria’s premier agricultural event is striding into the future with a strong list of over 900 exhibitors. Demonstrations and presentations will cover food, including native foods, fibre, profile chef cooking, home composting and much more. A free forum will engage farmers with the Society of Precision Agriculture and Young Farmers Ministerial Advisory Council with very topical industry speakers, focusing on precision technology, social media and how they are driving higher outputs in the farming industry today (no entry fee). This year will see a little nostalgia as Farm World reflects on the journey so far. Come celebrate the long-term loyalty of machinery exhibitors such as Vin Rowe, Gendore, R.E.N. and Alto Motors (to mention just a few) who were present in the founding years of Farm World (formerly known as The Gippsland Field Days). Still exhibiting today, they join a long list of national and regional farm machinery exhibitors with new model releases, wide ranges of stocks, and on-site experts. BJ Bearings, a long term exhibitor at Farm World, have increased their association by taking up naming rights for what was previously known as the General Interest Pavilion - now the BJ Bearings Pavilion, so make sure you check out the fantastic product range and advice they have available.
MIDDLE AGE: Farm World is celebrating half a century at Lardner Park with another huge event of more than 900 exhibitors. This year’s theme is Food & Fibre, and Saturday and Sunday will see a celebratory ‘Food & Fibre Fiesta’ in the main Conference and Exhibition building with presentation sessions, fresh produce stalls and fibre demonstrations and sales. Learn how to take awesome photographs of food for Facebook and Instagram, cooking with essential oils, native foods, bread and cheese making demonstrations, funky basket weaving, home composting and much more. Two high-profile cooking demonstrations will be conducted by the renowned Alejandro Saravia, Peruvian-born chef and owner of Pastuso in Melbourne. Women in Agriculture presented
by Telstra and supported by Commonwealth Bank Australia is a much loved luncheon on Thursday (www.lardnerpark.com.au for the fantastic speaker line-up). On Friday is an early breakfast hosted by the Commonwealth Bank as a strategic partner to Farm World, followed by the Official Opening luncheon with regional food and fibre expert Paul Ford as the main speaker. On Friday afternoon a free-entry forum (seats must be booked on the website) is being hosted by Society of Precision Agriculture Australia and Young Farmers Ministerial Advisory Council, with a focus on ‘Collaborating to Innovate’. With industry leading panel speakers, focus is on precision technology in
agriculture and social media and how these are driving higher outputs for farmers. The Farm World Equestrian Expo was a huge success in 2016 and this year has show-jumping, dressage, mounted games, a breed village, trade exhibits, heritage draught horses, pony rides and plenty more. Lining up again this year is Pakenham and Gippsland Isuzu UTE as the Main Arena partner, the Mitavite Cool Crusada Masterclass Arena, Pakenham Produce Farm World Cup, and Yarragon Rural Supplies Farm World Mini Prix. For all competition and masterclass session details, prizemoney, and sponsors please visit www. lardnerpark.com.au.
This year will see the introduction of several crowd-pleasing new activations. ‘Fittest @ Farm World’ is an epic contest pitting Gippsland farmers against Voyage Fitness gym-goers to determine who really is the fittest. Come along, pick a side and show your support. New to Farm World in 2017 is the big Gippsland Jersey Milk Off challenge, consisting of timed milking challenges with noted regional media and political personalities (1 teat, 1 hand, 1 minute, most milk collected), along with commercial dairy farming education and presentations. The event will be interspersed with engaging panel discussions and theatrics with patrons between daily milk-off sessions. Plenty of retail shopping exists together with indoor trade exhibitors in the Baw Baw and BJ Bearings Pavilions, with a parcel delivery service available to assist with all those shopping purchases. Information and ticketing for Farm World and functions are available for the first time, online now at lardnerpark.com.au still at 2016 ticket prices. Tickets available at the gate on the day at 2017 prices. Family friendly atmosphere at Farm World FARMING is a family business in the truest sense of the word - and this is exactly what so many farming families love about it. The opportunity to grow up on a farm and spend time with parents while they work is something that most farming children treasure long into adulthood. So, it makes sense that Farm World is an event that caters to the whole family. As the saying goes, if the kids are happy, the parents are happy. This is a mantra that certainly rings true at Farm World, which
offers such a fun-filled family day out that even non-farming families won’t miss it. And it’s easy to see why, from endless large machinery exhibits to working dog demonstrations and horse riding events, there is so much for the kids to experience. They even have the opportunity to have a first-hand experience with the animals with the ever-popular Lion Dairy animal nursery and pony rides. In addition to family activities throughout the event, this year Farm World will launch the Agrikidz program for schools.
This innovative program focuses on school-aged children from local and peri-urban regions, inviting teachers to bring children on an excursion to visit the animal nursery and the rest of Farm World.
Over the year, Agrikidz will share information to teach about where foods actually come from and how to grow healthy food at home. They’ll learn about the full life cycle of their produce – from the farm through to what happens behind the supermarket shelf, and on to composting and recycling. The Agrikidz program also includes a colouring competition with some fabulous prizes available. In 2012, Farm World introduced the Women in Agriculture Luncheon to their program celebrating women in
rural and regional Australia. This year’s luncheon, presented by Telstra will feature two guest speakers; Rebel Black, who launched her first business at age 22 and has spent the past 16 years creating award winning businesses, while leading development in women’s empowerment, community, tourism, education, business and social, emotional and physical wellbeing. And Emma Germano, a local Gippslander from Mirboo North, boasts a Nuffield Scholarship, international relations studies, a restaurant
venture and business strategy consulting under her belt. Emma works on the family farm (Germano Produce), as the business development and operations manager, which supplies cauliflower, cabbage and potato crops to the fresh market. She is also the vice president of the Victorian Farmers Federation Horticulture Group. This year will also see the introduction of two exciting new events that will appeal to the whole family: The first Fittest @ Farm World and the Big Gippsland Jersey Milk Off.
RIDE ON: Farm World caters to the whole family, including the always-popular horse riding events.
A Historical perspective
IN 1963, the year that marked the beginning of Beatlemania and the delivery of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s iconic “I have a dream” speech, a group of Gippsland farmers collaborated to exhibit farm machinery and plant the seed that would eventually grow to become Victoria’s premier regional agricultural event – Farm World. Originally known as The Gippsland Field Days, this iconic event started its life on a property near Longwarry followed by a series of locations in the Warragul region over the next four years. In 1967, land was contributed by some visionary local farmers to form what is now known as Lardner Park, ultimately giving Farm World a permanent home from which it could flourish - 50 years down the track we are celebrating this game-changing move. The local community were passionate about growing the Lardner Park facility, the site gradually expanded as land was purchased or generously bequeathed from neighbouring

farmers as they passed on. From this brave initiative, back in the 1960s, Lardner Park has grown to 300 acres in size and consists of a modern convention centre capable of hosting up to 1000 delegates, over 5000sq/m of undercover pavilion space, an agroforestry plantation, R&D crops and numerous other facilities. Among the more than 900 exhibitors taking part in Farm World this year, are many of the machinery exhibitors who were involved in the original Gippsland Field Days. It is an inspiration to see them maintain their involvement, with exhibitors such as Vin Rowe, VC Traders, Gendore, R.E.N. and Alto Motors continuing to exhibit through successive generations. The Tractor & Machinery Association of Australia will again recognise the Best Powered and the Best Unpowered machines with the annual TMA awards presented at Farm World. Aside from the everexpanding exhibitor list and
continual increase in visitor numbers, Farm World has also experienced highlights throughout its life including visits from Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Turnbull, both of who have attended to open the event. Farm World was also proud to welcome Quentin Bryce to speak at the Women in Agriculture Luncheon during her time as Governor General. Over the course of the last 50 years our farming community has persevered through good seasons and bad, through floods and seemingly endless droughts. They have seen the rise and fall of wool and beef prices, changes in consumer demands and most recently, the challenge of cuts to milk prices. Events such as Farm World do more than simply passing on new skills and product knowledge; they also serve to bring the farming community together to support each other in much the same way as that first visionary group of farmers did back in the 1960s.

Special Southern Farmer Feature lift-out FABULOUS FENCING: Do yourself a favour – check out Woodshield Fencing.
Putting the WOW factor in farm fencing YOU have thought about it and keep meaning to do it but it’s one of those projects that stays on the ‘to do’ list. Fencing is one of the most sought after features for property owners. That stunning black or white post and rail fencing that not only frames a property, but is also safe and durable. It’s a case of good looks meets necessity. You want something safe, something that will last –
forget painting and the like. Something that has a wow factor. Woodshield is an Australian company who has the answer. Untreated timber encased in recycled polymer. The internal timber is completely chemical free. The outer polymer is sourced from agricultural uses such as irrigation piping or dripper tube that would normally go to landfill. The combination of the two provides a long lasting
product with very little maintenance required and is totally sustainable. No drying cracked timber so no loose fasteners. No painting, no rotting, no rusting, no termite or white ant issues and splinter free – safe for animals. The whole product can be totally recycled so it does not leave a footprint of waste and it’s made right here in Australia. All standard nails, screws and bolts can be used.
The band saw that will cut any Australian hardwood into practical usable sizes
You can attach wire, hang a gate, build an arena, and fence a paddock. It can be knocked or rammed in the ground and with a life span of four to five times longer than treated timber or steel, it is a cost effective application. It can be used anywhere in or around water as the timber is totally sealed. The posts have been used in the ocean around Australia, NZ, Japan and the USA for growing oysters, building
jetties and coastal fencing. The fence posts also beat the local 2014 fires around Wallan/Lancefield/Kilmore area. Because there is no chemical treatment there is no fuel for the flames. No dried out brittle timber so no cracks for the embers and the fire swept past leaving the posts untouched. OK, so is it too good to be true? Local equine properties have installed the product.
Local vineyards are growing grapes off it. Local councils are using it for car park barriers and playgrounds. Local farmers are using the fencing for cattle and believe it or not, it was featured in office and bar renovations around Melbourne. Do yourself a favour – have a look on line and visit the display stand at the Farm World Field Days. Further information: www. woodshield.com.au.

Maximum battery performance and longer battery life to boot SULPHATION build-up is a major problem with lead acid and calcium acid batteries and Recharge Battery Conditioning Program can add as much as double the battery life, according to Gerard Anselmi of Recharge Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner. How Recharge works: As batteries age, more and more of the sulphur ions in the sulphuric acid electrolyte that should be holding the electrons or charge build up on the internal lead plates as lead sulphate or sulphation. This build-up does two things. Firstly, it reduces the battery’s charge holding capacity by removing the sulphur ions from the electrolyte, and secondly, it acts like rust on steel and corrodes the lead until the plates collapse and cause premature battery failure. “Every battery you buy has already started to sulphate and they just get worse until they die,” says Anselmi. A Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation build-up process, one chemical reaction to counter another,” says Anselmi. “Once treated, a battery
is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition and prevention is the key.” “Dead batteries are dead, so forget about them,” says Anselmi. Treat batteries early and repeat every two to three years for starting batteries, or every three to four years for bigger traction batteries like independent power supplies, fork lifts, golf carts and scissor hoists. Gerard and Debbie will be at the Farm World Field Days on their new site N-10a. The 500ml farmer pack works out at around $4.50 per car battery. A more cost effective two litre commercial pack is also available and that pack can also be purchased on line at www.recharge.net.nz. However, as Recharge is acid based it is dangerous goods and expensive to freight. The 2-Litre bottle is therefore, the only one that we sell directly and it is far cheaper at the field days. You can also treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell, treating and resealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like forkifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries.

Get fired up for winter
FILL your house with the ambience of crackling wood and glowing embers this winter with Jetmaster Heat and Glo’s range of wood fires. The company, which has been operating in Australia for about 35 years, offers a wide variety of gas and wood heaters to suit the needs of any household. Sales director Ashley Stride said he expected the company’s wood fires to be popular among regional consumers at Warragul Farm World. “If they’re off-the-grid with no availability of gas they (wood fires) are certainly the cheaper way to heat the home,” he said. Jetmaster Heat and Glo will have staff on hand to assist consumers with their search for the perfect wood heater to suit their needs. Mr Stride said the business would have about 15 models of wood fires from its three wood fire brands on display during the event. “Being the most efficient fireplace on the market means you burn less wood and heat more area,” he said. “If you live on a farm and you’re chopping wood, it means you’re attending to the fire less. “It’s good for your hip pocket but it is good for the environment because there’s less smoke and you’re burning less fuel.” Mr Stride said the business strived to achieve the best warranty and the most efficient product on the market with its clean burning fireplaces. The business stocks three brands of wood fires from the largest fireplace companies in the world, including Australia’s most efficient slow combustion wood fire, the Eco-Choice from Quadra-Fire, which boasts up to 82 per cent efficiency. Mr Stride said the business had taken on knowledge and expertise from the brands it sells, including Kemlan, which has a range of modern Australian-made wood fires. To get your house winter ready visit the Jetmaster Heat and Glo team at site number 208 at the Farm World exhibition.

Korumburra Agricultural Show, held in February, was another very successful day for the Welsh Black stud. Buchanan Park Paris – a senior cow with young calf at
foot was crowned Supreme Beef Exhibit. Principals Allan and Jill Furborough from Tynong North have been delighted with the stud’s success so far this year. Allan and Jill travelled to New Zealand late in 2016 to attend the fourth World Congress of the Welsh Black Cattle Society. “An enjoyable trip was had touring many Welsh Black studs in both islands, said the couple. “It was very interesting
to see how well the breed excels in such rugged terrain. “In the North Island, two studs were stand outs, with the quality of their cattle. “Many a late night was had talking about Welsh Black genetics with the international visitors, from Wales, UK, Germany, and of course about our quality cattle in Australia. “We look forward to sharing our experiences with our visitors at Farm World Lardner Park this year.

crush is an asset to any feedlot and commercial stud operation. This is a totally unique design which features far less linkages to assist in easy and effective management. The air crush utilises the latest technology available for air equipment which makes it a faster and cleaner cattle crush. Air-powered rams are fitted to the headbail, squeeze and rear door of the crush which can all be controlled from a single control box that is attached to a swinging boom. This boom can be operated in any position from the headbail to the rear door. RPM Australia-Pacific will be at all the major field days in the country to showcase the benefits of all the equipment. Please call them on 1800 648 666 or click on www.rpmrural. com for further information. See them at Farm World – Lardner Park: Site C8-C9.

Red hot crop danger FIRES during harvest cause not only major crop damage with consequent financial losses, but could also cause the destruction of expensive harvesting equipment and even jeopardise the lives of operators. Deutschers Outdoor Power, based in Ballarat, stock the Aussie Pump range of high pressure pumps that suit crop protection fire duties. The majority of harvest fires originate from engines, as the build-up of flammable material can spontaneously combust. Exhaust sparks are another major cause, risking loss of the combine as well as the crop. “The key to avoiding harvester fires is attention to clean down and inspection,” said Deutscher Outdoor Power’s Robert Keays. Aussie Pumps, Australia’s leader in fire pump design and development, worked with farmers to develop pumps capable of real protection. “There is no point in having a 10,000 litre capacity water cart if the pump isn’t big enough to use that capacity effectively,” explained Keays. The Aussie Mr T 2”x2” twin impeller pump is a leader in its class. To achieve its performance, the Aussie Mr T comes with a genuine Honda 9hp or 13hp petrol engine. A diesel drive version is also available with a Yanmar 10hp electric start, air-cooled engine. Both engines offer loads of torque and allow the pump to be able to reach a whopping 90-metre head, and still deliver a maximum flow up to 450 litres

KEEP YOUR COOL: Aussie Pumps distributor Robert Keays from Deutschers Outdoor Power recommends using high pressure pumps like the powerful Mr T twin impeller Honda powered fire pump for crop protection duties. per minute. The Aussie Mr T is available in either 2” or 3” configuration and delivers flows in excess of 200 litres per minute at 65 metre head. “An added bonus is the pump’s ability to draft water from creeks and dams. “It has an unequalled vertical suction lift of 7.6m,” said Keays. A sturdy galvanised roll frame with anti-vibration mounts is supplied as standard on all configurations. For larger applications, Aussie Pumps developed a 3” pump that delivers flows of up to 1000 litres per minute. “If you’ve got the capacity in the water cart, it’s smart to use a pump that’s got serious flow capabilities,” said Keays. The company claims that this
3” pump is the first of its kind to provide genuine ‘knock down’ performance, ie high volumes at high pressure. The big pump self-primes first time, with the ability to draft water from vertical depths as much as 8.4m. Its maximum head is 70m – that’s over 100psi. Serious croppers understand they need capability if they’re going to stop a crop fire fast. “These big pumps can throw a jet 50 or 60 metres and pour huge amounts of water on the fire, literally drowning it,” said Keays. Further information on the complete range of Aussie Quik Prime pumps including a free Fire Survival Guide is available from Deutschers Power on (03)53394437.

A strong, reliable permanent electric fencing solution suitable for internal subdivision, boundary fencing and feral exclusion.
An electronic heat detection device that monitors riding activity and works out when a cow is in standing heat.
A year after the first model, the vertical column waste pump, the first in Australia and possibly the world, was released. While the FilterCut pump worked very well, like all other pumps it was subject to excessive wear in dairy and some commercial applications. The Ruffy pump model was released September 1974 with great success. The Filter-Cut pump comes in two outlet sizes 1½” and 2” BSP and in column lengths to suit pit depths from 2’6” to 12’ – all have an external agitator blade that is attached to a 75mm extended impeller nut made from case hardened steel. This together with replaceable hardened steel tips fitted to the faces of the impeller vanes and a hardened steel perforated plate with a clearance of approximately .020” combine to agitate and cut up solids. The 1½” model can have motors from 2Hp–7.5Hp with a maximum of 28m shut off head or 680l/min open discharge. The 2” model can have motors from 5.5Hp–25Hp with a
maximum of 73m shut off head or 1450l/min open discharge. The Ruffy pump at present has a 2” BSP outlet with column lengths to suit pit depths from 2’6” to 6’, it has a large open CNC machined 4140 steel impeller with a heavy-walled cast iron casing. Standard operation for the Ruffy is direct coupled with a 3Hp, 1440 rpm motor. The Filter-Cut range of pumps are most suitable where there are softer solids in suspension, heavy sediment or high heads. The most common applications are in piggeries, abattoirs, wineries and food processing plants. The Ruffy range of pumps are most suitable where there are hard or abrasive solids or very high volumes over shorter distances with low power requirements and minimal maintenance. The most common applications are in dairies, abattoirs and wineries and some mining applications. Dumac Pumps are also agents for the Teco and Ebara range of pumps and motors.

Special Southern Farmer Feature lift-out
Farmer says Flashmate makes life easier CRAIG and Deb Allott are thirdgeneration dairy farmers who sharefarm with their daughter and son-in-law on the family property at Hazel Park in South Gippsland. During this autumn’s joining program, they used the Flashmate electronic heat detector from Gallagher for the first time and haven’t looked back yet. Flashmate is an electronic heat detection device that monitors riding activity in dairy cows to work out when an animal is in standing heat. It looks for specific patterns of riding/mounting by other cows such as frequency, amount and duration of activity – and flashes red to indicate when a cow is ready for AI. If the cow doesn’t come back into heat within 25 days of being AI’d, the Flashmate will flash green to indicate a possible conception. Craig has used traditional methods for detecting heats before but with mixed results. “In the past we’ve used tail-paint and tried scratchies too, which have not been really successful. “The cows will find trees across the property that they can have a scratch against – and that’s given us false readings. “Likewise tail-paint is okay but sometimes you can’t really tell if the cow is definitely ‘on’ and ready for AI.” This has meant that someone with Craig’s skill and expertise has always had to be present during milking times – to be able to recognise the patterns of when a cow is in standing heat.
“A problem we had before was that cows brought in for milking might have been let go from the shed and put back out into the paddock before we’ve had the chance to properly ID which ones are in heat. “Even then, if someone with the right experience is there to keep an eye on things, an autumn joining period often means that you’re milking in near-darkness – so it’s very hard to accurately pick out the cows that are ready for AI sometimes.” The main reason Craig says they chose Flashmate was greater ease and efficiency in correctly identifying cows that are in heat. “I did consider they’re a bit more expensive than other options out there but if you’re picking out more cows – and more accurately, more easily and faster too – then that helps to balance the cost out I think.” Another reason lay in the application of the Flashmates. According to Craig, applying them was also pretty easy. “We just did it during milking while the cows were on the platform. “So, I just went along and sprayed them with the glue while my wife, daughter and son-in-law were milking. “And by the time I’d sprayed them I’d just go back to the start again and pop them on – it was pretty good to apply them and less mess than paint.” Having applied Flashmates to 150 of his herd, two or three days passed before the first one was activated. “As soon as the Flashmate
was on though, it was very easy to see and that made it a bit exciting. “Within about a month, you could look across the farm at a certain paddock at night and there were green and red flashes flickering all over the place – it was like a light show – quite interesting to see.” That same light show enabled Craig and other dairy workers to see exactly which cows were responding to the AI program. “The milkers can actually identify the cows without needing someone who’s got a lot of expertise in knowing the cycle patterns to watch out for. “The Flashmate allows anybody to tell what’s going on, so it’s saving us time and effort and cutting out the guesswork from other methods we’ve used in the past.” Craig notes that Flashmate accurately identified one particularly quiet cow that had never shown any signs of mounting activity in the past seven years. “We’d never seen her bulling, never picked up on a cycle before and actually selected her for AI for the first time ever because of Flashmate. “In the past we’d normally have the bull pick her up later on, so that was a big bonus to see happen this time around. “Overall, I’d say Flashmate has definitely made life a lot simpler. “Picking up more cattle the way it’s allowed us to, more accurately and quicker – that’s why I’m looking forward to using it again this spring joining period, too.”
MONITOR: South Gippsland dairy farmer Craig Allott tried Flashmate for the first time this season.

LAND health and pasture management strategies ensure stockowners achieve overall improvement in production. Increasing forage quality in pastures involves the control of problem grass and weed seed germination, plus strategic measures to discourage rogue species. Some food assurance programs require producers to exercise sound waste management practices by ensuring land, waterways and storage sheds are regularly cleared of unwanted agvet chemicals and containers. Agsafe’s product stewardship schemes, ChemClear and drumMUSTER are industryled programs working towards reducing waste on properties, by helping farmers keep their land clear of unregistered chemicals to ensure the health and safety of farm workers, families and the environment. In addition, the programs help producers to meet critical QA standards for waste management. drumMUSTER program
manager, Allan McGann, said regular maintenance of properties protected not only workers, families and livestock, but it was the basis of sound environmental land management. “It’s becoming increasingly important for the entire agvet sector to demonstrate effective waste management to meet quality assurance and best management practice requirements, Mr McGann said. “Our programs can support primary producers to meet these requirements by providing evidence noting proper disposal once unwanted containers and chemicals are disposed of through each program. Property owners in southern Victoria can register unwanted agvet products online and have an opportunity to drop them off on a set day per month at a collection location in Laverton. Clean used containers can be delivered to approved local collection points which can be found on the drumMUSTER website at www.drummuster.
org.au/find-a-collection-site/ Chemical containers displaying the drumMUSTER logo are eligible for free collection and known as Group 1 chemicals. Agvet chemicals without the logo or are unlabeled, expired, mixed or from nonparticipating manufacturers, are designated Group 2 products, incurring a fee per lt/kg for disposal. A quote is provided when booking Group 2 chemicals for collection. Empty, clean containers displaying the drumMUSTER logo are eligible for free recycling and Agsafe recommends growers purchase their agvet chemicals from suppliers who stock products with the logo on the chemical label. Register now online at www.chemclear.org.au or phone 1800 008 182. Find your closest drumMUSTER collection site by visiting www.drummuster. org.au or by phoning 1800 008 707. The weakest link in dry cow nutrition If grain with mineral inclusion is fed (dairy grain), then minerals should be adequate assuming the dairy grain is adequate in mineral inclusion. Where just silage or hay is fed, dry cows must have mineral supplementation. We manufacture a self-feed/ controlled intake loose-lick mineral product, high in calcium, for this purpose. The grazing season dry cow Dry cows with access to unlimited pasture will gain weight and predispose themselves to ketosis postcalving. Don’t underestimate this risk of sub-clinical ketosis as too often the condition passes unnoticed unless the cow is tested. There are milk keto test strips available for doing this. A combination of the energy density of pasture and the cow’s capacity to consume large quantities invariable exposes her to weight gain and suppressed feed intake post-calving, and the ketosis risk again. Do not rely on BCS scoring to tell you if these risks are occurring. By the time you can see a change in body score, I assure you, she is well on her way to ketosis. Only blood tests will pick this up well before the risk factor has become disease. Blood testing of dry cows has also highlighted negative energy balance and weight loss when it was assumed there was ample pasture available. We always have adlib silage or hay on offer to dry cows even with ‘heaps of pasture’ available. I also defy anybody who can accurately tell me grazed pasture intake from eye or electronic assessment of pasture stands. Unmanaged grazing will encourage selective grazing. This results in dry cows consuming highly digestible regrowth, high in energy and crude protein, but very low in fibre. The end result is acidotic dry cows. Back to the stress factors in
last month’s article. Dry cows need a high fibre diet for good rumination and repair of rumen wall damage from sub-optimal rumen pH bouts during lactation. Yes it’s a tension, like everything else in life, but it’s also management, and nothing impacts profit (milk price excluded) like good cow and feed management. The second issue in dry cow nutrition revolves around immunity, which is not unrelated to nutrition. A high-fibre diet with adequate energy and protein will promote a strong immune system. Alternately, inadequate energy/protein intake will induce mobilisation of body fat to support maintenance and pregnancy and is the first step to depriving the immune system of its nutritional needs. A dry cow diet inadequate in fibre will promote reduced rumen pH from low rumination/ saliva production and nutritional deficiencies due to undigested feed passing out in manure. However, sub-clinical acidosis is a stress factor that will disable immunity’s full capacity to deal with any bacterial or pathogen assault. Dry Cow Therapy in conjunction with your veterinarian, be it just Dry Cow Treatment and/or Teat Seal is certainly an investment in both post-calving milk production and fertility. The number of heifers reported to me as having mastitis at calving is alarming and several clients are now Teat Sealing heifers prior to calving. Consult your veterinarian on this. Summer flies and winter mud; the risk is ever there. Mastitis between calving and joining can reduce fertility by 30 per cent. Mastitis between joining and six weeks postjoining can cause up to 60 per cent loss of foetuses. Cell counts above 200,000 are considered sub-clinical infections and recommended to be treated. According to a Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council webinar a couple of years ago, milk production, age and BCS only explain a small amount of noncycling cows. It was stated clearly, cow health makes a substantial difference on cow cyclicity. Cows suffering sub-clinical
disease, either metabolic (milk fever/ketosis), or infectious (metritis, respiratory disease, but especially mastitis) exhibit the lowest level of cyclicity. I shudder every time I hear
the comment: “it’ll be good dry cow feed”. No other management factor is going to affect our dairy profit this year like dry cow management; yet,
they frequently are the most neglected group of stock on farm. Many successful lactations and fertility are written off during the dry cow period.
STOP CONCRETE WATER TANK LEAKS! AFTER

BEFORE
IT HAS been said often; if we get transition right we’ve likely achieved the highest goal to profitable dairying. Last month I gave our definition of transition period: from dry off to conception. The jobs not done till she’s in-calf. Uptake of the management information available for springing cows and early lactation has been slow, but gaining momentum. Without doubt, dry cow nutrition is now our greatest legacy. Rumination data generated from devices on dry cows during summer months on one of my best performing client’s farms was ‘shock therapy’ to him. And this was only highlighting dry matter intake. Rumination data tells nothing of nutrient intake. Turning out dry cows to back paddocks or out-blocks with no dietary supervision will negate the best springer cow management. Dry matter intake is obviously the first consideration. The risk of low intake, and hence low energy and protein, during drier months is very high. Conversely, the risk of excessive intake, particularly excessive energy intake in abundant pasture, is equally as damaging to the cow entering the springing group for lead feeding. The first will have lost weight, mobilising body fat to meet her energy needs, the second will have gained weight and will certainly have low intake postcalving. Either scenario will induce fatty liver syndrome/ketosis post-calving. We have verified both these scenarios through blood testing cows as they enter the springer group (post-dry period) and soon after calving. Both showed high BHBA readings, the indicator of subclinical ketosis from excessive fat metabolism. The summer dry cow Pasture hay or cereal hay will rarely meet the dry cow’s energy needs. She will need an energy supplement in the form of grain. Pasture silage generally will be higher in energy than hay and will meet her energy needs. Adlib intakes of either hay or silage make for easy management.

The new Victorian hunting manual to replace old guide VICTORIAN hunters will soon receive a copy of the most comprehensive game hunting manual ever produced in Victoria. The new manual ‘Game Hunting in Victoria - a manual for responsible and sustainable hunting’ will be mailed out to all Victorian Game Licence holders and will replace the previous annual Victorian Hunting Guide. Hard copies will also be available from DELWP, DEDJTR and GMA offices. Game Management Authority (GMA) chairperson Brian Hine said the new manual is an important milestone that demonstrates the government’s commitment to responsible hunting in Victoria. “The new manual was developed in close consultation with hunting organisations and relevant government departments to assist game hunters in acting safely, sustainably, humanely and legally, Mr Hine said. “Delivered as

part of the Victorian Government’s Sustainable Hunting Action Plan 2016–2020, the new comprehensive manual outlines the current laws, firearms safety, hunting methods and equipment, ethics, survival skills and provides improved education and training for game hunters. Hunters are reminded to keep their personal copy of the new manual in a safe place as this more extensive manual will not be mailed out annually. An electronic version of this edition of the manual is now available on the Game Management Authority’s (GMA) website www.gma. vic.gov.au and future updated versions will be posted on the website as required. “The future of game hunting in Victoria depends upon ethical and responsible hunter behaviour and I urge all hunters to ensure they comply with the critical information contained in this manual, Mr Hine said.
THIS year, my Beef Week visits started at Heatherington Park Poll Herefords of Phil Gay. Heatherington Park was established in 1991 on the sound bloodlines of Studbrook, Wolbull, Margfred Park and Wiranya. A number of 22-month-old bulls and a selection of females were on offer with next year’s bull offering on display. Bulls were available on the day but also available all year round. Next it was David and Scott McKay’s Marschay Shorthorns at Dean. Sires currently in use include Royalla Masterpiece, a sire which is producing high quality females. Marschay is well known for its steer production and exhibited two steers at the 2016 Royal Melbourne Show, one of which was a member of the winning Shorthorn Borthwick Trophy Team. David is a previous Beef Week chairman. Tippett family’s Glengyron Shorthorn stud south of Newlyn has a proud history of success at the Royal Melbourne Show. They received numerous awards at Royal Melbourne and Royal Geelong Shows in 2016, including Reserve Junior Champion Bull at Melbourne and Junior Champion Bull at Geelong. Glengyron was also awarded Highest Point Score by a Purebred Steer at the 2016 Royal Geelong Show Carcass Competition. Also on display was Marschay’s entry in the RAS Heifer Challenge, comprising a pen of 10 heifers. Next was High Spa Angus Stud of the Mobbs family in Daylesford. And due to the high demand all this year’s crop of sale females had already been sold. Adameluca Angus stud of Sam Trovatello, with well known cattle man Barry Godbolt, had 29 bulls from 16 to 21 months offered in conjunction with Glendan Park of

Alvio Trovatello Hereford Stud’s sale of 36 Hereford and Poll Hereford bulls. Adameluca Angus was established in 2012 by Sam Trovatello and family with foundation females from the Granite Ridge, and Sandy Acres studs in South Australia and Te Mania in Victoria. Semen, as well as embryos, were imported from Schaff Angus Valley (USA). Irelands Galaxy G43 was purchased in 2013 for an Australian record of $117,500 to be the stud’s main sire. Next was Toor Down South Devon Stud of John and Sue Harvey. The Harveys have been breeding South Devons for 49 years and export semen from their all-polled cattle worldwide. Toor Downs has the distinction of being judged Best Tasting Beef in Australia. And their bulls have sired champion carcasses at the Royal Melbourne and Royal Adelaide shows. In an interesting move, the Harveys sold 10-year-old Toor Down Marvel 3 to a group of Red Wagyu breeders to infuse polling.
The next morning saw Southern Farmer in prison – Her Majesty’s Prison Langi Kal Kal at Trawalla west of Ballarat. However, we were, in Monopoly terms, ‘Just Visiting’. Langi Kal Kal Angus has 250 stud females of which around 170 are joined by AI each year. Over the past ďŹ ve years, Langi Kal Kal has run an extensive AI program, continually increasing the genetic gain in the herd using sires such as Te Mania Emperor, Rennylea Edmond, Equator A241, Merridale Gem and Irelands Galaxy. On display were the 40 bulls to be offered in the stud’s ďŹ rst on-property sale and the 20 PTIC females to be offered in the autumn store cattle sale in Ballarat. Also on display were the spring drop calves, featuring some of the ďŹ rst progeny of the $150,000 bull, Millah Murrah Kingdom. Then was Francs Angus stud, which was founded some 60 years ago breeding and selling seedstock. Nick Francs reported a successful day, selling eight young bulls. Progeny of Jindra Double Vision and Witherswood Andy F34 were
on display. The sprawling National Trust Mooamong Station at Skipton was the next intended port of call and the Weatherly Angus Stud of Charles Weatherly. Charles reported a steady ow of visitors throughout the day to inspect the sale bulls and commercial sires including the grand progeny of Novak, Regent, Berkley and Daquiri. The progeny of the stud’s Cohort 6 bulls H42 and J17 were on view. The stud didn’t expect to sell a large number of bulls on the day, rather, “wait until the buyers have done the rounds and ďŹ nd that most bulls on offer are beyond their budgets, so they come back to usâ€?. Lastly, was Murdeduke, who run a large scale operation on two properties, at Winchelsea and Mortlake, and register some 550 calves each year. They reported a steady ow of around 50 visitors from Coonabarribran, NSW, Gippsland and around the Western District. Southern Farmer thanks all those studs for their time and hospitality on the 2017 Beef Week Field Days.

good indicator that something is not right. Not only are smells unpleasant and embarrassing, but they could be a clear sign that things are soon going to get worse. Your septic system is the digestive system in your back yard. It relies on naturally occurring, good bacteria to break down all the waste and grease that you ush away. The wrong type of bacteria or too few good bacteria in your system, leads to smells, clogged drains, overowing septics and blocked absorption trenches. Breeding better quality bulls at the top end of the market KENMERE Charolais will be offering 40 industryfocused bulls for sale on Friday, March 10 at Moorak Rankins Lane, Holbrook. Matt Collins from Kenmere says they are proud of the bulls being offered for sale. “Our bulls carry different genetics for the stud and the commercial buyer and we have complete confidence that they will grow into quality bulls, bearing all the necessary commercial traits.” A large selection of the bulls are focused on vealer
production, exhibiting soft meaty bulls with great rib and rump characteristics. Kenmere breeds commercial cattle using their own sires to produce vealers. “We feature consistently in the top sales quotes for vealer calves at Barnawartha selling complex,” says Mr Collins. “These calves highlight our ability to produce high quality commercial cattle and our bulls are bred to meet the strong demand in these markets. “Our aim is to
concentrate on breeding better quality bulls at the top end of the market.” All bulls offered for sale have been semen tested and checked for structural soundness. The bulls receive a 7-1 vaccination program, three day sickness and drenched along with a PI negative testing report from EMA. Scan data will be available on sale day. “Our females are exclusive to us and date back to original bloodlines starting in 1970,” says Mr
Collins. “They are individually matched to our stud sires to meet our sale criteria. “We participate actively in breed plan and use EBVs as our guide to improve and monitor our herd.” He says the cattle have strong maternal qualities, good milking capacity and great temperaments. “We are committed to the beef industry and value all our customers. “Strong relationships and open communication with the client is of utmost importance to us.”
COMPLETE CONFIDENCE: Kenmere Charolais have a bull sale on Friday, March 10 at Moorak Rankins Lane, Holbrook.

VACCINE: Leighburn Farm manager Scott Norton from Shelford urges others to protect ewes from “silent killer” Campylobacter.
Victorian sheep producer sees positive results of vac trial A FARM manager based in Shelford, Victoria is urging fellow sheep producers in the area to consider using Campyvax to help protect against lamb losses caused by the Campylobacter bacteria. Leighburn Farm in Shelford, Victoria, is now seeing the positive results of vaccinating with Campyvax after experiencing a massive loss in the prior year. Farm manager, Scott Norton, says he suspected there was a bigger issue than just a bad year when the first 20 ewes tested all aborted their pregnancies. “It was devastating. “We were tested for Campylobacter and after the shocking year we had, we were glad to
discover this was the reason.” Following the positive diagnosis of Campylobacter in his flock, Mr Norton introduced the Campyvax vaccine in the hopes of improving productivity. As his whole fl ock was significantly impacted by the abortion storm, he was advised that he should only vaccinate the maidens as the main flock would have built up a natural resistance to the bacteria. Coopers Animal Health produces Campyvax, the only vaccine that helps control reproductive losses due to Campylobacter aiding in the control of abortion events which could result in increased
numbers of lambs. Campylobacter can be a significant source of reproductive losses in sheep due to the two major Campylobacter species. “Since introducing the Campyvax vaccine to our farm this year, we have seen a 20 per cent increase in the maidens,” Mr Norton says. “Although not an entirely clear picture of the results we expect to achieve in the future, we are thrilled with the numbers.” Jim Walsh, technical Advisor at Coopers Animal Health, says that Campylobacter is common on farms in Victoria and many are benefiting.

Tracking weeds: look out for tropical soda apple shrub
Advanta Seeds offers big cashback on Hyola varieties AUSTRALIAN canola growers will be able to claim $100 cashback on every bag of selected Hyola new technology hybrids they purchase in the coming season. Advanta Seeds canola business manager Justin Kudnig said the cashback offer was designed to both reward customers and add value to the higher gross returns new technology hybrids can produce compared with open pollinated (OP) canola. “The offer is available to canola growers who purchase Hyola 600RR or Hyola 725RT with selected seed treatments for the 2017 cropping season, he said. “These hybrids have shown impressive yields, gross returns and improved weed control when compared to some OP TT varieties, while also taking into account the higher hybrid seed price. In addition to the yield and oil advantages hybrids can bring, Mr Kudnig said
By RACHEL GORDON, Livestock Biosecurity Network, Biosecurity & Extension Manager
HIP POCKET: Advanta Seeds canola manager Justin Kudnig says the cashback offer is focusing on two new technology hybrids. these new herbicide tolerant hybrids offer more options in the cropping rotations, improving overall IWM system profitability. “In addition to the herbicide technology employed in many canola hybrids, the higher biomass allows for enhanced weed competitiveness up to 50 per cent higher compared to OP TT varieties, meaning a cleaner paddock and lower weed burden for the following rotation. Mr Kudnig said recent research suggested that these hybrids showed
adaptability with early sowing opportunities across medium-high to high rainfall districts across southern Australia, and that growers could increase their gross returns per hectare by selecting key hybrid varieties. “Naturally it is up to each grower and their consultants to decide which technology group fits best with their integrated weed management plans. For more information on eligibility and on how to claim, as well as terms and conditions, visit pacificseeds. com.au/canolacashback.

WE usually think of the National Livestock IdentiďŹ cation Scheme (NLIS) as a method of identifying cattle, sheep and goats. SpeciďŹ cally, where they’ve come from, and where they went to. It is used to trace stock in disease outbreaks, food contamination issues, and return lost or stolen livestock. But it can also be used to locate exotic plant infestations. Tropical soda apple (TSA) (Solanum viarum) is a noxious weed that originates from South America but has spread to areas of North America, Africa, India, Nepal and parts of Asia. It was first identified in Australia on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, near Kempsey, in 2010. It is a perennial shrub that grows to approximately one to two metres high. It has large, unpalatable leaves, is covered with spines and produces mature, yellow fruit the size of golf balls. In the immature stage, the fruit resembles small watermelons, pale green with dark green veins. The plant can produce up to 200 fruit, each containing up to 200-400 seeds. A single plant can produce up to 45,000 seeds each year. TSA is a problem for several reasons: it spreads quickly, invading areas along river banks and pastures. It also establishes in forests, along roadsides, and in horticultural and cropping areas. Because of its prickly nature, TSA can prevent animals from reaching water and shade. Its family members include eggplant, potato and tomato, and it can carry plant pathogens such as cucumber mosaic virus and tomato mosaic virus pos-
BEWARE: Rachel Gordon from Livestock Biosecurity Network warns against TSA in your pastures.
ing a risk to our horticultural industry. Cattle can play a signiďŹ cant part in spreading TSA. While the plant itself is not palatable, the fruit is attractive to cattle. The viable seeds are spread through manure up to six days from ingestion. Any seed not passed within six days becomes unviable. Tracing cattle movements through the NLIS has been successful in locating TSA infestations. Simple biosecurity measures can reduce the spread of TSA. If you are buying cattle from areas where TSA may be an issue, such as the North Coast of NSW, you must hold any incoming cattle for a minimum of six days in an area that can be closely monitored for seedlings. Similarly, if you are selling cattle and they have had access to TSA, you must hold them in a clean paddock for a minimum of six days prior to moving them off your property. It is illegal to move cattle, knowing they may be carrying TSA seeds. These movements are trace-
able, and you can be prosecuted and ďŹ ned for transporting TSA seeds via cattle movements. Seedlings have also been known to germinate in horse manure, so incoming horses should be held in a contained area for six days as well. Other forms of movement include waterways, feral animals, birds, and contaminated fodder, soil and equipment. If you are in a TSA area, or suspect you might have bought livestock from a TSA area, take the time to check for new plants. Regularly monitor cattle camps, stockyards, areas where cattle have been fed, and holding paddocks. Monitor waterways such as drains, gullies, and oodplains. Check fence lines, tracks, roads, forested areas and places where feral animals inhabit. If you ďŹ nd, or suspect TSA, contact your local council weeds ofďŹ cer as soon as possible. TSA can produce fruit within two months of germinating, and while herbicide will kill the plants, it will not kill the seeds within the fruit. CMP 0-8-0 a hit with farmers VICTORIAN biological fertiliser distributor Graeme Joyce of Alternative Growing Solutions has witnessed ďŹ rsthand a movement among farmers towards CMP 0-8-0. Graeme says he has distributed CMP 0-8-0 for 12 months, with really great feedback from farmers. Wangaratta beef farmer Brett Goodwin got better than he bargained for when he trialled fertiliser CMP 0-8-0 on his property. He gave it a go, hearing it was superior to straight super, profoundly reducing phosphate loss through leaching and suitable for organic, as well as conventional farms. As a bonus, after a 12-month initial trial, Brett also found that CMP 0-8-0 could help save the lives of his cattle from the scourge of grass tetany. Last year he trialled it on his 142 hectare property at Tarrawingee in North East Victoria, adjacent to a paddock where he applied straight super. “It is heart breaking to come across cows in the paddock, dead from something as common as grass tetany, so I am hoping this CMP 0-8-0 product comes up trumps again in the second trial,â€? Brett said. “I ran a trial for 12 months, and ďŹ ve cattle died next door using straight super, but in the adjacent paddock using CMP 0-8-0 there were no losses,â€? he said. “It has got to be the magnesium or the beneďŹ ts of not tying up the magnesium. “If I apply straight super I really struggle with grass tetany. “The CMP product gives very healthy and very strong clover production. “I will use it again for the next 12 months to conďŹ rm the initial results.â€? A cow in the lactation stage after calving needs a strong diet of magnesium to replace the magnesium lost from the body in milk, urine and faeces. “I applied four tonne of CMP 0-8-0 last year, and don‘t get me wrong, I’ve been a straight super man for a very long time. “But the CMP 0-8-0 allows magnesium to reach the grass and seems to curb grass tetany. “It does give you a greater stalk in your grass and stronger clover.
“My ryegrass has a bigger stem. “It seems to be a very good product at this stage.â€? A third generation farmer since he was 18, Brett and his family run a herd of 80 beef cows and calves, aided by his trusty farm dog Ned, a blue heeler-border collie cross. Brett’s dad still farms at age 90. Alternative Growing Solutions have partnered with FertAg P/L to obtain exclusive Australian/New Zealand distribution rights from an Asian supplier to provide up to 50,000 tons a year of the specialty high-grade phosphate product that can be used by organic and conventional farmers. The environmentally friendly product reduces phosphate loss through leaching by up to 22 times less than for soluble phosphate sources and is suitable for use in organic agriculture. Other plusses include: easy to store, easy to mix with compatible fertilisers, released by the acidity of the soil, not water-soluble and has the same neutralising value as ag lime. It reduces sodium content over time, reduces metabolic deďŹ ciencies in animals with grass tetany and milk fever, and increases and extends the grazing period in forage and pasture species. “We have sold CMP for use on pasture and crops, for golf courses, dairy farmers, beef farmers, orchards, vegetable farms and cut-ower production farms,â€? Graeme Joyce says. “Farmers say CMP creates a better quality pasture or plant, plus higher volumes, so they are getting a better return. “We generally move between 12 to 15 tons of CMP a month,â€? he said. “The main reason we incorporated CMP 0-8-0 into our business was to provide traditional farmers, who may have limited knowledge of biological products and how they are utilised in the soil, with a means of shifting to biological fertilisers,â€? Graeme explained. “Using CMP 0-8-0 is like a half-step towards using environmentally friendly fertilisers
WINNING: Wangaratta beef farmer Brett Goodwin got better than he bargained for when he trialled fertiliser CMP 0-8-0 on his property.
which improve soil biology and achieve a better crop result. Graeme says CMP offers a sustainable source of key nutrients over short-lived single super or lime. It contains 24 per cent calcium, 10 per cent magnesium, 11 per cent silicon and 8 per cent phosphate. The product acts as a soilamending agent as well as a fertiliser, providing phosphate, which is 95 per cent available, and calcium silicates to sweeten pastures and improve cation exchange capacity (CEC). The product is produced by a natural, non-chemical process. It is environmentally friendly and is not soluble in water, but is easily digested in acid soils. CMP 0-8-0 is compatible in the utilisation of biological products. “CMP will last longer in the paddock than single super, which washes out after three to four months. “CMP is still there after 18 months, said Graeme. To gain access to the CMP product contact Graeme Joyce from Alternative Growing Solutions, mobile 0419 960 485 or email graeme@alternativegrow.com.au.
