BARNABY Joyce’s elevation to leader of the Nationals and Deputy Prime Minister appears to be a popular choice among agricultural groups and farmers who feel that their rural interests will at last have a “real voice”. The Member for New England and Minister for Agriculture ran unopposed in the recent leadership ballot, following the retirement of veteran parliamentarian and Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss. The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) led the way in congratulating Barnaby Joyce on his success. NFF president Brent Finlay said that the federation was “heartened” by the fact that someone with strong ties to the agricultural sector and who was aware of current rural issues had replaced Mr Truss. Minister Joyce was also an advocate for regional Australia in
the role of Deputy Prime Minister. “Australian agriculture has entered a period of enormous opportunity in both existing and potential markets driven by growing global wealth and demand for our premium quality and safe food and fibre products,” Mr Finlay said. “The growing role agriculture will play as one of the foremost pillars of the Australian economy must continue to be recognised at the federal level and reflected in the appointment of the best and brightest to lead these important portfolios.
