BARNABY Joyce’s elevation to leader of the Nationals and Deputy Prime Minister appears to be a popular choice among agricultural groups and farmers who feel that their rural interests will at last have a “real voice”.

The Member for New England and Minister for Agriculture ran unopposed in the recent leadership ballot, following the retirement of veteran parliamentarian and Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss.

The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) led the way in congratulating Barnaby Joyce on his success.

NFF president Brent Finlay said that the federation was “heartened” by the fact that someone with strong ties to the agricultural sector and who was aware of current rural issues had replaced Mr Truss. Minister Joyce was also an advocate for regional Australia in

the role of Deputy Prime Minister.

“Australian agriculture has entered a period of enormous opportunity in both existing and potential markets driven by growing global wealth and demand for our premium quality and safe food and fibre products,” Mr Finlay said.

“The growing role agriculture will play as one of the foremost pillars of the Australian economy must continue to be recognised at the federal level and reflected in the appointment of the best and brightest to lead these important portfolios.

Ag groups push government to re-think backpacker tax

INFRASTRUCTURE investment should be a priority in the State Government’s upcoming budget according to the Victorian Farmers Federation’s (VFF) prebudget submission.

VFF president Peter Tuohey said that rail and water projects top the lobby group’s list of infrastructure priorities, as does more funding to rid rural Victoria of mobile black spots. “We’re working closely with the government to deliver these projects and want to see the dollars committed in the budget,� he said. “We need to clearly see the government listing when and how they will be delivering on Murray Basin Rail and other projects.�

The other projects the VFF is strongly advocating to receive funding include: ‡ 7KUHH PLOOLRQ GROODUV to extend the Cattle Underpass Scheme (CUPS);

LABOUR SHORTAGE: Agricultural groups believe that the high rate of tax placed on backpackers will scare away international workers who make up a large percentage of Australia’s fruit and vegetable-picking workforce.

Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) horticulture group vice president Emma Germano said the big response to the petition was evidence that the government needs to listen to agriculture communities. “Backpackers provide a valuable source of labour for farmers who already face challenges in attracting seasonal labour,â€? she said. “The government needs to realise the damage a new tax will cause to the agriculture sector industries and instead develop a solution that will beneďŹ t all stakeholders. “Everyone agrees that backpackers should pay tax while they are working here, but taxing

them up to their eyeballs will only scare them away from choosing Australia to visit. “Our solution offers a reasonable alternative that will provide the government with steady revenue, but still offer a good incentive for them to work on our farms, which is exactly where we need help,� Ms Germano said.

AUSVEG VIC supports calls for the Federal Government to rethink its policy on the way working holiday makers are taxed, also claiming that the vegetable and potato industries will suffer if any changes deterred workers from coming to Victorian farms.

AUSVEG VIC state manager Kurt Hermann said that labour is integral to the Victorian horticultural industry, with overseas workers playing a vital role in harvesting many vegetables, especially with labour-intensive vegetables such as spinach and Brussels sprouts. “Typically, the horticulture

sector uses a higher number of seasonal workers than other agricultural industries,â€? he said. “This means that the vegetable and potato growing industries across Victoria would be hit hardest by any increase in tax that deters backpackers from working in the sector. “The proposed tax threatens the vegetable industry’s ability to stem this ongoing decline in backpackers coming to Australia, and further endangers the vegetable and potato industries, which are already struggling to source labour across the state. “The ability for growing operations to turn a proďŹ t is becoming harder and harder due to lowering farmgate prices and increasing production costs such as labour.

He said that there were also fears that produce could be left unpicked if there was a further drop in the availability of workers for the horticultural sector.

AUSTRALIAN agricultural groups and supporters are calling on the Federal Government to soften its approach and lower the backpacker tax or risk labour shortages to the industry and growth to regional areas.

The online petition that was developed by the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) and its member organisations to urge the Federal Government to reconsider implementation of the backpacker tax has reached more than 10,500 signatories.

Launched in the ďŹ rst sitting week of Parliament this year, the petition has attracted signatories from all levels of Australian agriculture, the tourism industry and international travellers.

The backpacker tax was announced in the 2015 budget and deems that from July, 1, 2016 all working holiday makers are to be taxed as non-residents at a rate of 32.5 per cent on all income.

Members of these industries are arguing that international travellers will not visit Australia if the tax comes into effect.

These groups believe it will create severe labour shortages in the agricultural sector and stie regional growth.

The NFF agrees that backpackers should pay tax, but considers the rate of 32.5 per cent too high, proposing that a rate of 19 per cent, achieved through deactivation of the tax-free threshold would be fairer to both backpackers and the industries that rely on them for seasonal work.

NFF president Brent Finlay said farmers from a range of commodities across Australia have expressed concerns surrounding the tax, which is well demonstrated by the strong response to the online petition. “Let’s make no mistake, this tax poses a serious threat to thousands of Australian agricultural businesses,� he said. “While government may be set to raise $540 million of the forward estimates through implementation of the 32.5 per cent rate, softening this to 19 per cent would still earn $315.7 million directly and generate many hundreds of millions more through the ongo-

New beef trade language up for public review THE Cattle Council of Australia (CCA) has released an independent white paper focussing on a consistent language to be used across the Australian beef industry.

With support from other peak industry councils, the CCA has released the paper for public comment.

The white paper outlines beef language descriptors for production, processing, wholesaling, retailing, consumption and government requirements.

The CCA wants to have a dynamic beef language that can be used consistently post farm gate for both domestic and international markets.

The current AUSMEAT system, designed about 20 years ago, is internationally recognised under many free-trade agreements, with the CCA pushing for a reformed beef trading language to improve the system’s accountability and transparency.

The CCA said that the language must continually evolve to accommodate changing needs in consumer demands, market access requirements, new processing and description technologies, breeding and on-farm management, while seeking to provide a balance between scientific knowledge and commercial reality.

Seed potato grower to join AUSVEG VIC executive committee A SEED potato grower from the Otways and chair of Seed Potatoes Victoria (SPV) Dean Bone has been appointed to the AUSVEG VIC executive committee.

Mr Bone’s farm is located at Kennedy’s Creek in the Otways and he grows more than 40 hectares of seed potatoes.

Having been in the industry for about 30 years, AUSVEG VIC state manager Kurt Hermann said Mr Bone is ‘a wellregarded figure’in the Victorian seed potato industry and his appointment to the AUSVEG Vic executive committee will enable the organisation to enhance the level of representation available to seed growers across the state.

“While Mr Bone’s appointment is an important milestone for the industry, AUSVEG VIC will continue to work with all of the state’s potato growers to ensure that they have an effective voice on the issues important to them,” Mr Hermann said.

“We must continue to build membership numbers, particularly within the state’s fresh and processing potato industries, and we would ideally like to see these sectors put forward nominees of their own for the AUSVEG VIC executive committee.

Meanwhile, according to the latest result from AUSVEG’s

Economic Confidence Survey confidence in the industry has increased by 19 per cent during the December 2015 quarter.

The survey consists of questions relating to how confident growers feel about key economic indicators, including macroeconomics, investment, the market and government policy.

The confidence index was constructed based on the results from an initial survey conducted for the quarter ending March 2015.

AUSVEG economist Andrew Kruup said that Australian

vegetable growers are becoming more optimistic about the current economic climate.

“The rise in confidence this quarter is being driven by increased grower confidence in government policy and investment, with figures indicating levels have increased by 35.5 per cent and 28.8 per cent in these two categories respectively,” he said.

“The increases in these two categories suggest growers may be more willing to invest in their businesses, which has the potential to increase their productivity and profitability.”

Mr Kruup added that the contributing factors which may have led to this increase in confidence could include a more stable political environment at both federal and state levels, an increase in export activity, and interest rates remaining at their lowest in the past 20 years.

“Growers must take all of these factors into account when developing plans for business investment.

“This increase in confidence is a positive sign that growers could be more willing to invest in their businesses, which could create jobs and strengthen the economic status of the Australian vegetable industry as well as the national economy,” Mr Kruup said.

In response to the appointment of the other Nationals’ members to Parliament, Mr Finlay said it was important the ministry held an understanding of one of the nation’s greatest drivers of export revenue, employment, growth and innovation. “We have seen the elevation of MPs who have an understanding of agriculture, regional Australia and associated issues to portfolios which are critical to the ongoing success and growth of our industry,� he said. “Australian agriculture is entering a growth phase and is likely to generate $1.2 trillion between now and 2030, while this year alone, agriculture is predicted to reap a record farm-gate return of $57.6 billion.�

Victoria’s peak farmer organisation is optimistic that a positive working relationship can continue under the new leader as he has a connection to the rural sector that instils confidence in farming communities. “Barnaby Joyce is a well-known advocate for regional Australia and I’m sure he will approach his new role as leader of the Nationals with the same enthusiasm he has shown in the past,� Mr Tuohey said. “He understands the problems we face in rural areas, and I’m optimistic his passion will further a good working relationship between the VFF and the Federal Government.�

He said his priorities included the representation of regional Australians by ensuring their standard of

living is advanced and to make sure a better return goes through the farm gate, the delivery of service and that basic services come as an affordable rate to those people.

When questioned on his intention to take up land rights issues relating to mining and farmers’ land rights, Mr Joyce said the Nationals were “always looking for proper balance�. “We will be stone, motherless broke if we closed down the mining industry,� he said. “There is no economic sense and every regional town would tear us to pieces. “In places such as central Queensland with Adani, it is absolutely vital that mine goes ahead, while...you can go to other areas where there are proper questions being asked about the challenge between prime agricultural land and mining. This is not a binary argument. “So often people try to take it to a ‘yes or no, good or bad, black or white’ resolution. “It is more complicated than that, but solvable nonetheless.�

Rare horses a feature at this year’s Ballarat Lifestyle Expo

By DAVID RIZZOLI THE Ballarat Rural Lifestyle Expo is set to take place one again at the Ballarat Showgrounds on Saturday, April 2, with one of the features at this year’s event being a display of rare breed horses.

The breeds on display will include the Gypsy Cob, Brumby, Waler and Icelander, together with the betterknown Clydesdale, Shetland Pony and Connemara Pony.

The Expo offers opportunities to look at animal care, land management, sustainable energy, alternative breeds and fencing.

There is a different layout of the Expo this year, with different features having their own dedicated zone.

Also from the Rare Breeds Trust, the Highland Cattle Society will be conducting its 2016 National Highland Show.

In the ‘horse zone’ experts will

be on hand to talk about and demonstrate care and maintenance of your horse.

The Clydesdales will be put to work, giving rides on the horse drawn buggy and lorry.

The Scottish judge for the Highland Show will be the internationally recognised Willie Christie, former herdsman at one of the most respected Highland herds in Scotland and who now resides in New Zealand.

Mr Christie had judged at numerous international Highland shows and is looking forward to judging in Australia.

The Expo organisers are expecting about 30 to 30 exhibits from around Victoria and Australia.

There will be numerous speakers throughout the day including Digger Club national sales manager, Keith Edwards and Corangamite CMA regional Landcare facilitator, Karen

O’Keefe.

Bob French will be speaking about pure bred ducks and Jeremy Vincent will appear in the Taste Ballarat Marquee.

The Taste Ballarat Marquee will showcase local food artisans and vignerons and a Paddock-to-Plate exhibition will be ready to admire.

The Expo offers a large variety of displays and demonstrations with something for everyone from Prue Simmons with her llama wool and natural dyes to hands on farm machinery demonstrations, with new technology on display.

The ever-popular Yard Dog Competition offers visitors an insight into the intelligence and stamina of these dogs as they go about working the sheep in the farm sheep yards.

The Beanie and Tea Cosy knitting contest will also be part of this year’s Expo.

Hunters fined and given good behaviour bonds for illegal activity TWO men from the Mornington Peninsula have been found guilty at the Mansfield Magistrates Court for possessing a dead Eastern Grey Kangaroo without authorisation as well as an unsecured firearm and spotlighting equipment in a deer habitat near Myrtleford.

The hunters were intercepted

in June 2015 by Victoria Police and Game Management Authority (GMA) officers, driving along Walshs Road on the Delatite Arm of Lake Eildon, shining a spotlight into the bush.

They were stopped and their vehicle searched, finding a butchered Eastern Grey Kan-

garoo on the tray of the vehicle.

Officers went on to find a large spotlight, a high-powered rifle and ammunition.

The men received 12-month good behaviour bonds, the kangaroo meat was forfeited to be destroyed and they were ordered to pay $500 to the court fund.

GMA director Simon Toop said GMA officers and Victoria Police will continue to conduct operations targeting illegal

spotlighting from public roads and on public land.

“Illegal hunting can put people and wildlife at risk, plus it damages the reputation of law-abiding hunters,” he said.

“Hunters are generally a lawabiding group, but some choose to do the wrong thing, and in do-

ing so, can be prosecuted, have their equipment confiscated and lose their game and firearms licences,” Mr Toop said.

Hunters and the general public are urged to report any illegal hunting to the GMA by calling the Customer Service Centre on 136 186 or contact Victoria Police.

Boonaroo Angus takes out prestigious title BOONAROO Angus has taken the title of 2016 Champion in The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) Heifer Challenge which took place during this year’s Beef Week.

The Fosters have run the 3800 acre farm located at Casterton for the past 12 years where they also produce prime lamb sheep.

Innovation offers positive solution THE farming industry has been given an opportunity to positively respond to the debate on cutting red meat consumption, with modern varieties of ryegrass proven to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock.

Managing director of Germinal GB, Paul Billings points to more than 30 years of innovative plant breeding at IBERS Aberystwyth University that has led to the widespread availability of the award winning Aber High Sugar Grass perennial and hybrid ryegrass varieties.

“Independent research, partly funded by government, shows that these ryegrasses, bred with higher water soluble carbohydrate content, reduce the environmental impact of ruminant livestock,” he said.

“Studies have demonstrated that lambs grazing Aber High Sugar Grass released 20 per cent less methane per kilogram of liveweight gain than lambs on a standard ryegrass.

“This is significant, not least because livestock are believed to account for approximately 37 per cent of all methane emissions.

“Similarly, in zero grazing trials with cattle undertaken at IBERS, the amount of feed nitrogen lost in the urine was reduced by up to 24 per cent from animals fed the Aber High Sugar Grass variety.

“This lost nitrogen has the potential to convert to nitrous oxide, which is a greenhouse gas with at least 250 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.

“So, by grazing or ensiling these modern ryegrasses with higher water soluble carbohydrate content, rumen efficiency can be improved in a completely natural way.

“This results in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr Billings said.

He added that as an industry there is a real opportunity to cut greenhouse gas emissions and at the same time improve the efficiency and productivity of ruminant livestock businesses.

“The technology is available now and there is huge potential simply by reseeding with the best available grass varieties.”

Germinal’s breeding program that has created these ryegrasses began in Aberystwyth in the early 1980s, producing

the first Aber High Sugar Grass for commercial sale in 2000.

This variety, AberDart, won the NIAB Variety Cup in 2003 for its outstanding contribution to crop productivity through improved quality, disease resistance, grower return or commercial success.

There have since been six further major industry awards recognising the contribution of this breeding program to farming and the environment.

Among the latest work to be carried out at IBERS is a project, funded through Innovate UK, to improve seed yield from these varieties.

This is resulting in increased availability to meet global demand for seed of these ryegrass varieties.

National seed wholesaler, Upper Murray Seeds has the exclusive rights to market and distribute the Germinal range of products in Australia.

WITH reports of summer populations of slugs emerging in Victoria and South Australia, AgNova Technologies is issuing a timely reminder to farmers about the importance of Metarex for slug and snail control.

Metarex was the first proteinbased wet formulation bait designed specifically for agricultural use in Australia, and the active ingredient is mixed evenly through the bait so it keeps working until the last piece is consumed.

Mr Glover said independent and in-house trials had consistently shown fewer damaged plants and more dead slugs and snails with Metarex at label rates, compared with other products.

Trials had also reaffirmed that Metarex works under harsh field conditions, lasting many weeks in alternating wet and dry conditions.

“Our work shows conclusively that slugs and snails find this product highly attractive and palatable, seeking out Metarex in preference to canola seedlings, other food sources and other baits,” he said.

Excellent canola yields after grazing with sheep A normal rotation on the property is two wheat crops followed by a canola and then back to wheat, with the oilseed used as a disease and weed break, as well as the opportunity to make money. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For weed control, canola is our best option,â&#x20AC;? Mr Lyons said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we can grow three tonnes per hectare or more from canola it is not that far behind a good wheat crop.â&#x20AC;?

The property is predominantly cropping based, with some stock to take advantage of some of the non-cropping ground and grazing options such as canola and wheat.

Hybrid vigour from canola was the key to being able to graze the area during the very cold conditions in the middle of the year and also assisted in the regrowth after the stock were removed from the paddock. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As soon as we took them off it cabbaged out,â&#x20AC;? Mr Lyons said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the hybrid vigour all it wants to do is ďŹ ll in the gaps.â&#x20AC;?

The Corowa region had one of its wettest years on record in 2015, with 26 inches recorded, although the area did suffer with two days of extreme heat in October and a lack of decent spring rainfall.

While those factors prevented the canola from reaching its full potential, good yields were achieved with the help of the subsoil moisture.

Canola was planted at a rate of three kilograms per hectare, with minimum-till techniques used to conserve moisture.

A PADDOCK of canola has produced an excellent grain yield after being grazed by sheep, mid-season on the property of Mark Lyons at Corowa, in southern New South Wales.

Mr Lyons said he planted PioneerÂŽ hybrid 45Y25 (RR) in late April 2015 and throughout July, the 70 hectare area was grazed by 660 ewes with lambs at foot.

He said with it being so cold and wet in the middle of winter, the canola was a very good option for the stock.

The ewes and lambs were removed from the paddock as the crop was starting to show signs of stem elongation and, at harvest, the area produced an average grain yield of 3.4 tonnes per hectare with an oil content of about 45 per cent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a shorter crop than the ungrazed canola and actually out yielded the other crop,â&#x20AC;? Mr Lyons said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was a difference of 0.2 tonnes per hectare in yield and about a foot in height between grazed and ungrazed canola.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Lyons said it was the ďŹ rst year 45Y25 (RR) had been grown on the property, although he had planted other Pioneer hybrids with Roundup ReadyÂŽ technology in the past.

He said the Roundup ReadyÂŽ technology was utilised for its weed control, with ryegrass being the main issue on the property.

Two applications of Roundup were used early in the season and the hybrid vigour of the canola also assisted in keeping the weeds at bay.

Brahman breed kicking goals MOST cattle breeders equate the Brahman breed with large cattle stations in the north of Australia, where they were originally imported in the 1930s; however the breed has well and truly made its way down south with 28 stud breeders now located in Victoria.

Australian Brahman beef cattle were developed by innovative north Australian cattlemen who appreciated the economic value of a beef animal which could adapt to harsh tropical climatic and environmental conditions.

Initial evolvement of the Australian Brahman began in Queensland, north of the Tropic of Capricorn.

Today the breed influence covers Australia with stud and commercial live cattle exports to many overseas countries – a clear indication of the breeds’ adaptation over a wide spectrum of climatic conditions.

The Brahman breed originated in the US in the early 1900s where it was developed from progeny of four Indian cattle breeds with some infusion of British-bred cattle.

Early Australian importations of Brahman-type cattle can be traced back to the turn of the century.

However, it was not until 1933 that significant numbers

were imported by a syndicate of Queensland cattlemen in conjunction with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, later to become the CSIRO. The growth and development of the Australian Brahman has been described as the greatest livestock revolution in history.

It has transformed the northern beef industry from near bankruptcy to an efficient and highly profitable enterprise which contributes millions of dollars annually towards domestic and export income.

Vast areas of previously unproductive land have been pioneered and developed into profitable beef enterprises using Brahman cattle.

According to Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association southern branch chairperson George Mercieca about 55 per cent of cattle in Australia are Brahmans, and many are now used to cross breed over Angus and Herefords in Victoria.

“People don’t seem to be aware that there are quite a lot of Brahman cattle down south now and that the association has a Southern Branch in Kyneton, Victoria” he said.

“In fact, I have sold cattle to about four people in the past three weeks and they actually said to me that they didn’t even

know they could buy them in Victoria.

“We also tend to sell an incredible amount of cattle through our Facebook site,” Mr Mercieca said.

He added that the breed perform “very well” in Victoria as there is a lot more feed allowing the cattle to put on weight much quicker.

Brahman cattle are also

economically successful, with a commercial bull recently selling for $96,000.

“About three years ago one was sold for $350,000.

“So in Queensland they average at about $5700 each.

“I recently sold an embryo here in Victoria for $11,000,” Mr Mercieca said.

The key attributes of the Brahman breed include the

cattle’s adaptability to the environment and its production potential.

The Brahman’s improved efficiency of production over breeds is closely linked to its unique digestive system attributes.

They are a low maintenance breed and their slower rate of protein turnover enables muscle and body tissue de-

velopment to continue on low feed intake.

The breed also remains productive longer than other breeds and it has a large tolerance to heat, which is a major economic factor in tropical beef production.

The Brahman’s resistance to cattle tick is of major economic importance because of less chemical use and increased weight gain.

Resistance to tropical internal parasites is also linked to their superior response and ability to tolerate stress.

Outstanding results have also been achieved by Brahman cattle in feedlots.

On the grass or grain in feedlots, Australian Brahmans have demonstrated an ability to achieve high growth rates and excellent feed conversion.

Their low maintenance requirements means there is a greater proportion of intake available for growth and their efficient digestive system means they can maintain higher levels of low quality intake.

The Australian Brahmans impressive production performance on the hoof is backed up by an equally impressive performance as a carcase.

Why? Because they are all interrelated.

The cow that gets one will likely get them all even if we are unaware of, other than the primary problem, due to their subclinical status.

Milk Fever is usually the first to be noticed, however, it can be precipitated by subclinical ketosis (low energy).

It is easily diagnosed: down cow, cold ears, S-curve of the neck, muscle tremors, dry nose and manure, and rapid heart rate.

When weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had access to rumination technology (an excellent way to pick up subclinical milk fever â&#x20AC;&#x201C; low rumination/temp, both displayed on your iPhone), reduced rumination and temperature (low or high) will decide whether it is milk fever or serious infection.

Another option is oral calcium supplementation at calving (bolus, paste, gel or drench).

Usually the drench using a rumen tube is the most effective as it delivers by far the greater amount of calcium.

A word of warning: the form of calcium in any of these products is critical.

Both calcium chloride and calcium sulphate are acidogenic and can irritate throat tissue and lower pH. Calcium propionate works well but is not very palatable and works best as a drench pumped direct into the rumen.

Calcium carbonate and

hydroxide are insoluble.

Low blood calcium will bring on every other fresh cow disease including uterine prolapse.

Retained placenta occurs when foetal membranes do not pass after 24 hours post-calving which can occur in scenarios like long calvings, twins, premature calving and abortions, and induced cows.

If a slight twist causes membrane to come away, it is okay to pull.

If not, leave it alone.

Low blood calcium prevents the uterus from contracting, so Oxytocin may help, or Prostaglandin if there is puss visible.

Back in the 1980s our vet used to flush any suspect cows, but this can also introduce bacteria if not done very carefully.

Back then we used a product called Lugolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Iodine, and it is still reported to be the best as it is safe and has no withholding for meat or milk.

Metritis is inflammation of the uterus and a sequel to retained placenta.

Visible identification is by vaginal discharge that is reddish-brown, watery and bad smelling.

Healthy discharge is pinkish, mucousy and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t smell.

A range of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa make metritis more difficult to treat.

Veterinary intervention is required.

Prevention is most effective through good transition producing high blood calcium levels and its effectiveness in muscle tension and uterine contraction post-calving.

Mastitis is an ever present challenge, but especially to cows calving with mastitis.

For herds with persistent problems, using veterinary assistance to identify any prevalent pathogens is essential for a control program.

All the normal things like milking machine, teat spraying including premilking teat spraying in herd challenges or high BMCC/subclinical mastitis.

Tracks, mud, etc. are just good dairy practice.

Dry Cow and especially Teat Seal are best practice.

Ketosis; clinical ketosis frequently puts the cow in â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;beyond the point of no returnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and is to be avoided at all costs.

Finally, displaced abomasum, a product of perhaps the two main issues - low blood calcium and negative energy balance which perpetuate everything else, is generally a result of decreased rumen fill simply because the cow is not well and not eating sufficient.

Low blood calcium also has a more direct involvement leaving muscle tissue and ligaments weak (poor tension) adding to the problem of an abomasum filled with air from low feed intake and either move to the left (LDA) or twist on itself.

Surgery is the only treatment, but for the sake of good dairy production/ fertility as well, prevention is paramount.

Prevention is clearly in dry cow, springer and immediate post-calving nutrition.

What Dr Gordon Jones calls; â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Goldilocks Rationâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not too much, not too little, but just right: minerals (calcium especially due to its massive requirement), energy and fibre.

Subclinical ketosis is far more common, and I go as far to say, most fresh cows would have subclinical ketosis.

I have a number of clients who routinely drench every cow at calving with propylene glycol.

Propylene glycol effectively gets the liver working again providing the cow with essential glucose for milk production and maintenance.

Ketosis, even subclinical, will decrease pregnancy rate, increase the risk of displaced abomasum, mastitis, metritis and ovarian cysts.

This contributed to a total of 28,139 containers collected and recycled through previous ChemClear collections across Australia.

CHEMCLEAR has successfully completed its largest collection of unwanted agricultural and veterinary chemicals in Victoria, picking up to what equates to 20.7 tonnes, with 11,319 litres per kilogram of Group 1 classified chemicals and 9449 litres per kilogram of Group 2 chemicals.

The ChemClear truck covered 5127 kilometres across five regional runs in late 2015, and collected product from hundreds of chemical users including farmers, businesses, golf courses, government departments and councils across the state.

ChemClear national program manager Lisa Nixon, who is enthusiastic about the growth of the program, said she was extremely pleased with the result.

“Year on year we collect 25 tonnes of Group 1 chemicals and a further 25 to 50 tonnes of Group 2 chemicals,” she said.

Since its release here in 2012, many farmers and contractors have opted for the smooth versatility of the Fusion 3 Vario and according to Mrs Berry, the machinery is easy to manoeuvre and fast.

“The bales are nice and tight, and with the inbuilt camera, I can see exactly what’s going on,” she said.

“I can’t get over how easy it is to use.

“Everything is done automatically, and when I turn it off, the work’s finished.

“No need to go back and do the wrapping.

“I’ve never seen anything so good and so efficient.

“It’s massive time saving for us and for the clients,” she said.

The Fusion Vario can produce bales of hay and straw from 0.6m to 1.68m, and silage rolls from 1.1m to 1.45m.

The two-metre pickup has five tyne bars with tynes spaced at 70mm to allow

maximum crop intake, which feeds through uniformly to a spiral-toothed rotor.

Mrs Berry said activating the drop floor clearing was very simple when she caught up a piece of wood as it is all achieved hydraulically from the cabin.

Bales are formed by three, wide high-strength, endless belts driven off two drive rollers.

The constant pressure system maintains density from the core outwards.

The net wrap system is designed for easy loading and the amount of net applied adjusts automatically when the size of the bale is changed.

Twin satellite vertical wrapping can apply six layers of film in 30 seconds.

The operator is notified when film runs out and wrapping continues at a slower speed until the second satellite is finished and the driver can replace both rolls at once.

The Berrys’ Fusion Vario has done 5250 silage and hay bales this season with a John Deere 150 horsepower tractor.

“At the end of the day, you drive out of the paddock and you’re done.

“No more late nights.

“I really love this machine, it just works.

“And when clients ring to book us, they know we’ve got other gear, but they say just bring the McHale,” Mrs Berry said.

WoodShield offers a revolution in timber fencing FIRES that swept across rural Victoria in 2014 had a devastating effect on the livelihood of farmers, their land and livestock that were caught up in the event.

With buildings and sheds burnt down, one thing that was left standing was WoodShield posts.

“And with no sagging from heat or brittleness from cold, WoodShield posts will perform on your farm for decades,” Mr Davidson said.

WoodShield timber posts have been specifically created for use in the viticulture, aquaculture, equine and general agricultural industries.

The smooth, easy-tohandle, exterior polymer coating makes WoodShield timber posts an extremely low-maintenance product.

Pressure-washing or cleaning with a water and bleach mixture every few years will keep WoodShield posts looking as new as the day they were installed.

The polymer technology

eliminates splintering, the danger of wood breaks and in most cases cribbing or chewing, making the posts perfect for use as jumps rails.

The posts also provide a chemical free and extremely safe fencing system.

“Our timber fencing posts and rails have equivalent strength and rigidity combined with the protective properties, toughness and lifespan of polyethylene,” Mr Davidson said.

“WoodShield posts are a cost effective, nonchemical option and many property owners have had WoodShield posts in the ground for up to five years.

“They are also ideal for organic growers and eco applications,” he added.

“Once treated, a battery is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition with prevention being the key.

“You must treat them early and repeat every two to three years and keep them charged.”

Mr Anselmi said that sealed batteries can also be treated

simply by drilling into each cell treating and resealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung.

Recharge can also be used for deep cycle batteries like forklifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries.

“The 500ml farmer pack works out at around $4.50 per car battery.

“A more cost effective, two litre commercial pack is also available and that pack can also be purchased on line at www. recharge.net.nz or on Ebay,” Mr Anselmi said.

Because Recharge is acid based it is classified as dangerous goods and expensive to freight, so the two litre bottle is the only one that is sold directly, and is far cheaper when purchased at the field days.

Increasing interest ensures pasture, grain and vegetable display continues to grow NOW in its ninth year, the pasture, grain and vegetable site at Farm World has successfully displayed a diverse range from every commercial pasture seed breeding company in southern Australia at the premier event.

The inclusion of grains and vegetables in 2015 was met with continual interest, leading to an increased variety of grains and pulses and an updated range of vegetable varieties in this year’s display.

As always, the site focuses on increased farm productivity and the use of commercially simple and successful fertiliser regimes.

Farm World has grown to be Australia’s key pasture and fodder focused field days.

The Basix Trace Elements team have expanded the display to include a greater option of varieties highlighting the diversity of agriculture across southern Australia.

The pasture display has identified and proven the universally successful varieties of pastures, including grasses, legumes, herbs

Legumes including clovers (sub, white, arrow, persian, crimson, rose, red, berseem, balansa, and

strawberry), medics (bur, hybrid, strand, barrel, and sphere), lucerne, and nonbloating legumes (sulla, serradella and biserulla) will also be displayed as well as chicory, plantain,

brassicas and sugar beet.

The array of stockfeed cereal grains such as oats, triticale, wheat and grain sorghum has been expanded, with several varieties of maize and a

greater focus on pulses, lentils, chickpeas, peas and faba beans.

Canola, rye, rice, chia, linseed, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, peanuts, broad beans, cannellini, borlotti, red kidney, adzuki, lupin, lupini, great northern, pinto, black turtle, soy and mung beans are also included.

The vegetable display reflects the potential of different types in the region.

Several varieties of potatoes and peas recognise the significance of these crops to the local economy.

Sweet potatoes, a wide range of Asian vegetables and salad greens round off a most interesting and colourful display.

All are sown on a base dressing granular fertiliser blend and a new Basix Trace Element pack formulated for fast root zone dispersal.

New technology for livestock producers that is now available and upcoming in the future will be the subject of a presentation by Zac Economu, a sheep farmer and research fellow at the University of New England.

These advances would include precision livestock management, virtual fencing and remote sensing of pastures.

New Zealand dairy farmer, Ben Smith will discuss his concept

â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Circular Solutionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, which incorporates a closed loop system where effluent waste is converted through a bio-digester to produce either fertiliser for pasture and crops, fish food for his developing aquaculture business or bedding material for his cows.

He uses a large range of technologies including electronic cow, effluent, water and irrigation monitoring and is planning to add an automated dairy system in the future.

Alternative farming models and the options

for being self-employed in agriculture without owning land assets will be discussed by John Mulvany from OMJ Consulting.

Succession planning is one of the biggest challenges facing farmers and involves a process that may take 10 to 15 years.

A panel discussion chaired by the Commonwealth Bank will address the issues.

The Equestrian Expo becomes an exciting new feature of Farm World AN exciting new addition to Farm World 2016 is the recently built Baw Baw Equestrian Centre on the western boundary of the Lardner Park site.

The Farm World Equestrian Expo will add a whole new dimension to the field days and its inclusion reflects the size and importance of the horse industry to both Gippsland and the regions surrounding Melbourne.

The Equestrian Expo is sponsored by Pakenham Isuzu UTE and Gippsland Isuzu UTE. Visitors to the expo will be able to inspect a selection of dedicated equestrian-related exhibitors, attend a variety of master classes with advice from the best in the industry, and watch or participate in dressage or show jumping competitions.

A huge range of classes and presentations has been scheduled including advice from expert Katie Ramsay who will showcase the thoroughbred as a versatile performance and pleasure mount.

Zoe Hyde is a personal trainer who specialises in helping riders with their fitness.

determine if your saddle suits your individual horse will come from Robert McCann who studied in England with the Society of Master Saddlers, and who is currently chief instructor for the ASFA saddle fitting courses.

Ang Lea, a qualified and professional equine body and Bowen therapist, will present a talk called ‘Horse Fix’ which she calls a DIY horse owner’s body therapy and holistic toolbox.

It is designed to empower owners to assess and care for their horses’ on a whole new level.

Members of Horse Riding Association of Victoria and/ or Equestrian Australia (HRCAV) will be competing in dressage events in a range of competency levels.

12 noon Training Showjumpers demonstration by Adam Wootten will cover techniques to develop a successful show jumping horse including a variety of exercises on horses at different levels. Alltech expands production plant to serve growing demand from Oceania dairy and beef market GLOBAL animal health and nutrition company Alltech has expanded its production facility in Forbes, NSW and is now producing Optigen II in Australia for the first time.

The new facility will satisfy growing demand from the dairy, beef and sheep markets for Optigen II, a slow-release, non-protein nitrogen source.

Originally developed by Cornell University, Optigen II has been used worldwide for more than 10 years, supported by in vitro, in situ and in vivo research.

Alltech Oceania ruminant team general manager Rob McFarlane said that farmers are facing extreme challenges in Australia and New Zealand making it difficult to run a profitable business.

“Extreme seasons, a unique mixture of management systems and global market milk challenges make it hard to produce consistent, profitable milk or beef,” he said.

“The Alltech on-farm support team provides technical support, working with farmers to identify challenges on farm and improve productivity in cows and beef cattle.

“We are proud to expand the existing Lienert facility in Forbes, helping us

continue to meet the needs of our customers,” Mr McFarlane said.

According to Alltech Oceania ruminant sales and marketing manager Susanne Roth, Optigen II provides a sustained release of nitrogen, which is extremely important for Australia and New Zealand systems where cows face changes in pasture quality as well as long feedintake gaps.

“Optigen II gives dairy and beef cattle farms, feed mills and consultants more freedom to maintain production over challenging periods and achieve higher profitability,” she said.

“Optigen II can be used over the top of existing diets to increase overall protein content, which is particularly relevant if there is a shortage of protein due to poor quality pasture.

“It can also be used to reformulate diets, increasing soluble nitrogen in the diet, which means improved digestibility and more microbial protein, thus improved production of milk or meat,” Dr Roth said.

The Southern Region Supreme Blonde d’ Aquitaine’s ninth annual sale moving online THIS year’s annual southern region supreme Blonde d’ Aquitaine sale is taking on a new format from its previous open auctions that were held at Lardner Park at Warragul during Farm World.

The ninth annual sale will take place online with video footage of animals up for sale from all participating farms available for viewing at www. blondes.asn.au or via the Blonde d’ Aquitaine Society’s Facebook page.

The society will still have a presence at Farm World, exhibiting their Blondes and will still run a sale by private treaty.

Blonde d’ Aquitaine Society of Australia and New Zealand Southern Region secretary Ron Radford said it is the first time the group had used this type of sale.

“In the past we have used open auctions and the helmsman auction system for selling Blonde animals,” he said.

“And although this has been successful in our region, we wanted to involve more members as many of them are hobby farmers that work off farm and can’t spare the time off work for exhibiting.

“We thought this would help to raise the profile of our breed having more members involved.”

BIG, BLONDE AND BEAUTIFUL: Blonde d’ Aquitaine Society members are very excited about the upcoming, new format, online sale.

Mr Radford said the idea to run the sale like this was so they could include as many breeders as possible, even if they only entered one animal into the sale.

“Because the system is online and across nine days,

no animal or farmer needs to leave their properties, enabling people to go about their normal routines and they can then make arrangements with prospective clients by phone to suit both parties for an on-farm inspection and purchase.

“The other good thing is that all prices are declared up front and because the farms are spread across Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the bottom half of NSW, clients looking for animals can look closer to

their homes for purchases,” Mr Radford said.

Blondes are the third-largest breed in France and were introduced to Australia via semen and embryos in the 1976.

Since then, Blonde bulls have been recognised by beef producers across Australia as being a sire that increases their profits.

In Australia and New Zealand, Blondes are making a substantial impact in prime cattle and carcase competitions.

There are more than 2000 active purebred females spread throughout both countries, and stud calf registrations have been steadily increasing every year.

“We encourage all beef producers to come and see the stock on their farm in their environment and we are also inviting stock agents to be involved in the sale, where introducing and settling agents will receive full commissions on their sale,” he said.

GENDORE Tractors and Machinery has a long and proud association with New Holland, which dates back to 1948 when Gendore’s founder, Lew Genoni was dealing with Australia’s first New Holland distributor, Doring Implements.

Today’s New Holland company is enormously different to those times operating as a massive global business with production facilities for its vast range of tractors and implements on every continent.

Gendore also is a different company to what they were in 1948, with the company remaining a family-owned business under the leadership of Lew’s grandson, Derek Genoni.

The company now plays a major role as the only dealer for New Holland Agriculture in Gippsland, with branches in Leongatha, Tooradin and its new premises at 180 Queen Street in Warragul.

Mr Parker said he has only had positive feedback from farmer’s using the machines, particularly in terms of fertiliser savings and reduction of nitrogen reaching waterways.

“The biggest thing about these machines is that they are easy to use,

but that is saves the farmer time,” he added.

Tow and Farm will be exhibiting at this year’s Farm World where many of the company’s lifestyle machines, including the tow behind mower and new manure collectors will be on display.

“These (manure collectors) are a sweeper, so they hook up behind the quad bike and they travel from walking pace to as fast as they want to go, and it cleans an acre paddock in 15 (minutes) where doing it with a wheel barrow and shovel could take four hours.”

Mr Parker is encouraging farmers to take their property details to Farm World where he will be able to discuss which machine will suit their farm size and type to make the best cost savings.

By DAVID RIZZOLI THE Welsh Black beef cattle breed is one of the lesser known breeds in Australia, with only about 30 studs in existence, mostly in Victoria and some in New South Wales.

The Buchanan Park Welsh Black Stud of Alan and Jill Furborough at Tynong in Gippsland was established in 2000 with the purchase of two females and one bull.

Today, the 130 acre stud runs about 100 animals, of which about 50 are female breeders with the rest being young heifers and bulls.

Although the breed is numerically small both in animals and breeders, the breed, as represented by Buchanan Park has achieved remarkable success in the show ring against the better known breeds – Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn – since it first took two young animals, one bull and one heifer, to the Royal Melbourne Show in 2002.

Both animals won their junior classes, with the bull standing Reserve Junior Champion.

Since then, Buchanan Park has been showing at Royal Melbourne and around the major regional agricultural shows with outstanding success.

It would be easy to dismiss the studs show success as ‘unremarkable’ because of the small numbers of exhibitors, but the major test of all show ring animals comes in the Interbreed Championships when the

champions of all the breeds at the show are pitted against each other for Supreme Interbreed Champion.

This is where the Buchanan Park Welsh Blacks are outstanding.

The stud’s greatest success was at the 2013 National Beef Bendigo when Buchanan Park Nicole stood Supreme Interbreed Champion as the top animal at the show.

The stud also exhibited the Interbreed Champion Group of Three.

In 2015 and at four shows so far this year, Buchanan Park exhibited a number of Interbreed Champions around the regional shows, particularly in standing Interbreed Champion Group.

Buchanan Park Nicole’s rising two-year old daughter, Buchanan Park Juliette is carrying on the tradition having stood at Supreme Interbreed Champion at Wonthaggi and Korumburra this year, as well as the stud achieving success as the Interbreed Champion Pair.

“We have been very fortunate over the past year winning as we have around the shows,” Mrs Furborough said.

“We usually take four animals to exhibit and have had great success.”

Good fortune or not, it takes meticulous attention to breeding the right animals and their preparation for, and presentation at any major show, and this is where the Furborough’s excel, proving you don’t have to be big or well known to be a champion.
