Growers settled into wholesale market Initial teething problems with the Melbourne Wholesale Market now sorted as growers look to a successful 2016

INITIAL problems that became the focus at the opening of the new Melbourne Wholesale Market have now been rectified as growers settle into making a living at the new site, according to AUSVEG VIC. AUSVEG Victorian state manager Kurt Hermann said that anecdotal feedback received by the representative body indicated that some of the problems relating to access to the site and stand allocations have now been sorted out. “With a project the size of the new market there were always going to be teething issues which you would expect, but the market is now starting to operate more smoothly and effectively and that information is coming from the growers themselves,” he said. “And that information is that it has all improved significantly
over the past few months. The new Melbourne Wholesale Market site at Epping opened on August 31 last year after the original opening date of August 3 was postponed due to incomplete work at the new site. Keilor vegie grower and president of AUSVEG VIC David Wallace, who trades three to four days each week, seven months of the year out of the market selling hydroponic capsicums said that although the new site doesn’t have the atmosphere of the old market, it is cleaner, brighter and quieter to work in.
