Beef market buoyant By DAVID PALMER

TOP DOLLAR

WIDESPREAD droughtbreaking rains across New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory in the past few weeks has boosted saleyard store cattle prices to close to 300 cents per kilogram. The eastern young cattle indicator had jumped to 447.5c/kg as Southern Farmer went to press at the end of January. Prices have increased at close to record levels. Prime cattle prices have increased more than 60c/kg and store cattle prices by more than 40c/kg towards the end of the month. Meat and Livestock Australia reported the indicator for January 27 on the sale of 15,913 head, a number significantly down on yardings for the previous week of between 25,000 and 30,000 head. At Pakenham the beef cattle yarding also dropped from 817 the previous week to 229 on January 27. Lower offerings and more demand were reflected at a special female cattle sale at Yea on January 23 where prices were generally 20 to 30 per cent above vendors’ expectations. Yea’s Larnoo Station was the first vendor in the sale with

BIDDERS at January’s Yea special female cattle sale competed strongly for Strathglen Pastoral Company’s two and a half year-old Keyuga-bred Angus heifers in-calf to Pertangus bulls. The 11head pen sold for $1750 to top the 2000-head sale. Rodwells’ auctioneer Adam Mountjoy said prices exceeded expectations - as did the sale. More photos page 7. PHOTO: David Palmer

126 cows and calves sold for a $1450 average. Station manager Andrew Fulford said that was at least a couple of hundred dollars more than he expected before Christmas. Another large draft of 125 two and a half-year-old in-calf Angus heifers sold by Jim Osborne and family’s Strathglen Pastoral Co, Strath Creek, topped the sale at $1760 per head. Their draft averaged $1495. Mrs Osborne said that many people after the sale had commented that the prices the family’s cattle achieved were where they should be normally. “At least we are now getting what they are worth,” she said. Graeme Young, Donnybrook, an intending buyer at that sale, said that predicting prices in the current market was like estimating where petrol prices were going. Meat and Livestock Australia market information manager Ben Thomas said that high cattle turn-off from a three-year NSW and Queensland drought had caused national herd numbers to decline dramatically. The herd is forecast to fall from a 35-year high of 29.3 million head to a 20-year low of 26.5m by the end of 2016.
