SITTING atop a Himalayan mountain at sunset, taking in the vastness of her surroundings, was literally the pinnacle of a long journey for Wangaratta’s Delia Beattie. Diagnosed with cervical cancer almost two years ago, and undergoing major surgery, treatment, and a long recovery period before being pronounced in remission, Delia became passionate about fundraising for cervical cancer prevention, vaccination and research. That drive led to her fundraising, with best friend Jenny Brown, and both recently travelled and trekked in the tiny country of Bhutan to see the work being done by the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF). The pair, with support from communities in Wangaratta and Melbourne, have raised more than $9000 to help ACCF vaccinate around 12 per cent of Bhutanese girls against cervical cancer. “We were so rapt,” said Delia. “It was just phenomenal.” And she said she could not thank the Wangaratta and North East communities enough for all the support they provided during the fundraising. Delia said her and Jenny’s trek, which took in part of the mountainous Himalayas, dense forest, remote Buddhist monasteries, small villages, hospitals and more, was an unforgettable and humbling trip. Along the way, she was able to meet with many prominent Bhutanese advocates of cervical cancer prevention, including the country’s Queen Mother and Princesses, and its health minister. And she was honoured to see the work done by the ACCF and felt privileged to meet a large cross section of Bhutanese people, from patients who had received vaccines to Buddhist monks. continued page |
