WHEN potter John Dermer first arrived in Yackandandah in 1974, his Kirbys Flat property was little more than a “grass paddock with a stunning view”.

Over the years – with this year marking his 50th year as a potter – he has built an enviable career and home, surrounded by nature and the bush.

And John’s passion for creation remains just as strong as the day he first started.

“I’ve always tried to stay pretty true to what I believe is a good pot,” he said.

“You do that out of being honest to the materials, and to the process.

“Materials are so important, you can lose so much time with bad materials.”

His work appears in collections all over the world, and pottery that he was commissioned to make 30 years ago for Parliament House in Canberra still grace the Cabinet Room, where Mr Dermer and his wife visited and met with Cathy McGowan (MHR,Indi) recently.

“It was a very proud moment in Canberra, a humbling experience,” he said.

“I was commissioned to make the 10 large scale pots, the largest over 90cm wide, for the Prime Minister’s suite area and inside the entrance to the Cabinet Room.

“I designed these pots with the idea that people would like to touch them, and the rims were so formed to compliment a person touching the rims.

“The largest of the bowls, a Terra Sigillata piece, I would consider my best pot, as the pot has a pure and balanced form, and this is the basis in my mind for the essence of a good and proud pot.” continued page |

Teaching kids about money

Compost is recycling at its best

IN the wake of last week’s Global Money Week ASIC’s MoneySmart offers practical tips and resources for parents to help them teach children about money to establish good money habits for life.

“The dynamic development of mobile banking and online shopping money reinforces the importance of teaching children and young people about money matters from an early age to ensure they develop sound financial habits and behaviours to help them navigate the financial decisions and challenges they’ll face throughout life,” said Peter Kell, ASIC’s deputy chairman.

“For parents, there are many situations in everyday family life that present opportunities to talk to children about managing money, including the basics such as how to budget, spend and save,” Mr Kell said.

ASIC’s MoneySmart offers the following practical tips to help parents have money conversations with kids: - At the ATM – explain where the money’s from and how you’ve earned it; it’s not just a hole in the wall where money comes out.

- At the supermarket – prepare a list, research prices and how you can save money if you shop around.

- Budgeting – involving kids in discussion about family

AS April begins and the last of the hot days have passed, autumn has finally arrived.

And with autumn comes autumn leaves, which are ideal for making compost.

Compost is nature’s recycler and fertiliser.

It is nutrient rich humus which improves soil structure, texture and aeration and increases the soil’s waterholding capacity.

Not only is it beneficial for the garden by enriching the soil, it also helps the environment by recycling and reducing organic garden and household waste, otherwise destined for landfill.

There are various composting systems available ranging from bins and tumblers through to worm farms.

These vary in size and take up little space.

The tumblers make turning the compost easier and protect it from soaking rains.

Recycled materials like wooden pellets, hardwood timber, bricks and galvanised iron can also be used to make a bay or start an open heap on the ground.

Choose a site that’s level, welldrained, and shaded.

Whatever system you use, the method remains the same.

Combine a mix of nitrogen rich greens, carbon rich browns, oxygen, and moisture and stir often.

Time is needed to get the job right.

TEACH THEM WELL: There are many ways you can teach your children good money habits. budgeting can prompt learning about differentiating between needs and wants, costs and spending. ASIC’s MoneySmart Budget Planner is a great tool you can use.

- Pocket money or income from a part-time job present opportunities to discuss setting financial goals and saving up for them and understanding the value of money.

- Mobile phones – discuss options for phone plans and checking and managing data usage to control costs.

- Encourage older children to visit ASIC’s MoneySmart website and use its free calculators, apps and resources, as well as tailored

information for young people starting out.

Mr Kell said supporting the teaching of financial literacy skills in schools is also a strategic priority for ASIC. “Research tells us many teenagers already have experience with financial matters, with over 80 per cent of 15 year olds having a bank account and 73 per cent earning money from work such as outside school hours work or occasional informal jobs, and about 90 per cent of 14-17 year olds owning a mobile phone,” Mr Kell said.

The traditional way of making compost is to add the ingredients in layers, a bit like making lasagne, watering well between the layers.

This is turned weekly to help with decomposition.

Depending on composition and the time of the year, maturity can take from six weeks to six months.

But as we are in a busy world and always in a hurry, a faster method has been developed. Smaller materials break down quicker than larger ones.

So shred, chip or chop up leaves, garden prunings, and dead plant material or run over it with the lawn mower.

Tear up newspaper and cardboard as small as possible.

Then, instead of adding the materials in separate layers, mix them together with a garden fork as they go into the heap.

Adding a shovel full of garden soil to the mix, introduces desirable composting microorganisms which breakdown the material.

Have two bins, fill one, and then start filling the second while the first is breaking down.

Dry eye in pets KERATOCONJUNCTIVITIS Sicca is a condition more commonly referred to as “dry eye” which may effect as many as one in 100 dogs.

Cats also may rarely be affected.

Caused by inadequate tear production, dry eye literally causes the surface of the eye to desiccate resulting in irritation, inflammation and pain to your pet’s eyes.

The condition may also lead to other serious complications.

If left untreated, ulceration, infection, scarring, and pigmentation can greatly reduce vision, and if severe may lead to loss of the eye.

Many things including immune cell infiltration or nerve problems can cause the reduced tear production seen in animals with dry eye.

Certain breeds are more susceptible than others, in particular dachshunds, Boston terriers, pugs and chihuahuas.

You should suspect dry eye if your pet’s eyes are “gunky”, red, painful, discoloured or swollen; or if there is reluctance to hold open their eyes.

It is important that if you suspect

your pet is suffering from dry eye you have it immediately examined by a veterinarian for the greatest chance of preventing the more serious sequelae.

Diagnosis of dry eye is made using special strips of paper to assess the rate of tear production.

Treatment involves topical eye ointments and possibly surgery.

Artificial tears may also be required if tear production is found to be greatly decreased.

Dry eye can potentially be a very serious condition, but if treated appropriately and quickly, your pet can lead a normal, happy, healthy life.

Photography is another of his passions.

“Photos have also been part of my life,” he said, explaining that he used to take regular trips to the Australian outback to photograph its vivid colours and rugged beauty.

“Photos are important in how I see my world,” he said.

“My environment and my work – there’s no way to distinguish the difference.”

Throughout his 50 year career, a few things have always stood John in good stead, including

the support and love of his wife Shirley, which has helped support and sustain him over many years.

“She’s given me the strength when it’s been really awful,” he said.

John said he is passionate about creating good quality and lasting pottery work – and producing a lasting piece of art is immensely satisfying.

“It has a life of its own…it will sit there proud, a balanced form, a surface that compliments the form, reflects the process of

firing and making, it retains the essence of a pot, of clay,” he said.

“I work in a process that has not really changed in over 10,000 years, and it is humbling to know that the pots that are collected from these years of history and usually proud and beautiful balanced forms.”

This Easter will see his 38th annual Easter exhibition for tableware, while this November will be his 40th annual major show.

REWARD FOR EFFORT: Will O’Connor with a fantastic brown trout he caught on a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic in a tiny tributary of the Ovens River last Sunday.

Reddies firing, trout on the bite THE fishing around North East Victoria is insanely good at the moment.

In the last few weeks I have experienced some of my best fishing ever.

Last week my father and I fished at Lake Buffalo, where we just caught redfin after redfin.

We lost count of how many we caught but estimate it to be somewhere between 150 to 200 redfin.

We kept around 40 or so for a feed (or two) and probably threw back four times as many as we kept. It was just incredible.

The redfin were biting on anything that we threw at them.

I caught a lot on a large bladed spinner called an Obsession spinner.

I also caught them on soft plastics and hard body minnows.

Dad was using yabbies until he ran out of bait about 15 minutes after we got there.

He then started using the gills out of some of the redfin we had caught and caught heaps of redfin on redfin gills.

So Lake Buffalo is the hottest fishing tip around at the moment.

The King Valley and District Fishing Club had a wonderful day at Lake William Hovell last weekend.

SUDOKU HARD

The kids caught some great redfin from the bank.

I follow this great fishing club on Facebook because I enjoy the stuff they do with the kids, and last weekend was no exception.

Judging by the photos the kids had a blast, and that’s what it’s all about.

My young friend Will O’Connor and I had an incredible day fishing in a tiny tributary of the Ovens River last Sunday.

We caught around 12 to 15 lovely brown trout.

All of our fish were caught using small Strike Tiger soft plastics (nymphs and froglets) and the two largest fish were around 40cm or so.

The trout fishing is really ramping up in the creeks and rivers at the moment as the water continues to cool down.

Easter Egg Pie with silverbeet and ricotta

WITH ANITA McPHERSON hit the spot after a humid day, made from fruit sourced from a single vineyard in the Myrrhee valley.

It’s a really interesting and flavoursome variety, with a lightly golden colour and an enticing floral, honeysuckle aroma.

It has creamy feel in the mouth, with long and lingering flavours of warm peach and quince fruit, balanced with a totally refreshing, citrus acidity.

It’s one to take time to savour on its own; although it does go well with a Thai curry or the richness of French cuisine.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

A sudden collapse, 1925 IT was a Sunday night on April 5, 1925, the huge water tank which towered over nearby homes in Docker Street near the railway line collapsed.

There had been concerns expressed during the building of the tank that it wasn’t up to standard, and the tank proved critics right,

although there were suggestions that the filling of the tank had not been carried out correctly.

As it collapsed, it brought down powerlines, blacking out parts of the town, and narrowly missed the McDonald home nearby.

It was rebuilt four years later and still stands today at the corner of Docker and Norton Streets.

THIS recipe is an easy solution for families who are stressing with ideas on what to cook on Easter.

There is family constantly flowing in and out of the house whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner, so to save time and ease try this nutrient laden pie from Australian Eggs.

Method Preheat oven to 190C. Trim most of the white stalks from the silverbeet and discard.

Roughly chop the remaining stalks and leaves and rinse (do not dry).

Heat a large pan over medium low heat and add the silverbeet.

Cook for 10 minutes or until most of the liquid has evaporated and the stalks are soft (you may need to do this in batches).

Remove from the pan and set aside.

Heat the same pan again, add the olive oil and onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until tender. Add the garlic and continue cooking for a minute.

Meanwhile, combine the ricotta, three lightly beaten eggs, lemon rind, parmesan, nutmeg, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Add the onion once it has softened.

When the silverbeet is cool enough to handle squeeze as much remaining moisture out as you can, finely chop then add to the ricotta mixture. Set aside.

Brush a 26cm springform cake tin with oil.

Line the base with a sheet of filo, laying it a little off centre so the excess falls over the side of the tin.

Brush with more oil and top with another sheet, laying it at an angle to the first sheet and allowing the excess to fall over the side of the tin.

Continue brushing with oil and layering with filo.

Once finished, spoon in the ricotta mixture.

WITH WWW.EGGS.ORG.AU Make five indentations in the filling with the back of a wooden spoon and crack an egg into one.

Fold the overhanging filo back into the centre of the tin to fully enclose the filling.

Brush with a little more oil.

Bake for 50-55 minutes or until golden brown and firm (if your pie starts to brown too quickly, cover with foil).

Stand for 5 minutes before gently removing from the tin. Serve with a simple salad.

THERE was a time just a couple of weeks ago when it was hard to walk into our bathroom without finding a frog.

For the life of me, I don’t know how they got in, having checked every door, window, wall and eave for gaps, but somehow they blazed a trail straight into the coolest room in the house.

After a few weeks of incessantly hot and humid weather I figure they must have been determined to find a place to chill out, and cool tiles and a damp sink must have proved alluring.

Gently catching and releasing them turned out to be a challenge, but practice made perfect and a peak cap turned out to be the perfect scoop.

I can’t blame them for seeking refuge – sometimes we all need to just kick back and cool off.

IMAGINE you’re riding your bike, taking in the nice sunny day, and you suddenly run over a stick on the path.

Your front wheel begins to wobble and before you know it, you’ve fallen off your bike grazing your knee in the process.

Have you ever wondered what happens to your body and your blood when you get a graze?

Our blood is an amazing thing, fulfilling many roles when it comes to keeping our bodies healthy and healing wounds.

For a start, out blood is comprised of four main components - red cells, white cells, platelets, and plasma.

Our red blood cells carry oxygen through our body, keeping our cells and organs alive, while also transporting carbon dioxide to our lungs.

So when we get a graze or cut, it’s very important that our body is able to stop us from losing blood.

This is where the other components of our blood come into play.

GOT A BOO-BOO: Grazing your knee is never a nice feeling, but have you ever wondered how your body heals the cut?

White blood cells will travel to the wounded area and scan for any foreign substances like dirt or germs.

Upon finding germs, the white blood cells will don their armour and sword, and fight off the invading pathogens.

After taking care of the germs, the white blood cells will consume any dead or dying cells in the body, effectively cleaning up the area.

Finally, after getting rid of the germs, the white blood cells will assist in healing the damaged tissue.

Next up are the platelets.

When our body is wounded, the platelets travel to the cut and gather their friends - the fibrins.

Together, the platelets and fibrins seal off the wound, preventing further bleeding and also helping to stop more germs

entering the body.

When you see a scab on your cut, that’s the platelets and fibrins doing their job.

Finally, none of these cells could complete their tasks without the help of plasma.

Plasma not only transports the blood cells to a wounded area, but also contains proteins that house important nutrients for healing -

including, vitamins, minerals, and lipids (fats and sugars).

Together, all of these components help to repair the damage, heal your cuts, and stop you from getting sick.

Of course, as amazing as our blood is, it’s still important to help it heal by washing and disinfecting the cut, and using simple first aid such as a band-aid or bandage.

Cardiac rehabilitation aids recovery HENRY McKenzie was taken by surprise by his cardiac event.

Mr McKenzie, a Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) food service worker of over 35 years, attributed his shortness of breath to getting older, but when he started to feel “heavy” in the chest, he saw his GP. His GP gave him a stress test, and the next thing he knew he was being referred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for angiograms, and his illness ultimately led to him having a quadruple bypass late last year.

“It was a surprise to me,” said Mr McKenzie, a Killawarra resident who prides himself on living a fairly healthy lifestyle, but added that a family history of heart problems was a big factor, as was stress.

He said a big factor in his return to health has been his participation in NHW’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

Mr McKenzie said that as well as the physical health benefits, the chance to be around other people who were on a similar journey helped his general wellbeing as well.

“We’re all here doing the same thing,” he said.

“It gets you thinking about what you need to do.

“We’ve got a second chance.”

He said for many cardiac patients like himself, symptoms of problems were nothing like they expected.

Rather than chest pains, it is often feelings like shortness of breath, a heavy chest, numbness in the limbs, aches in the neck or jawline, heartburn, extreme fatigue and nausea, which are often mistaken for signs of ageing, tiredness, or symptoms of other illnesses.

Additionally, men and women can display wildly different symptoms.

He praised the program for helping him work his way back to health, and said that by following exercise and other recommendations of the program, he was making good progress.

“I know in myself how much better I am,” Mr McKenzie said.

“I am more aware of my own body.”

He urged people to make sure they are aware of changes in their body and get checked out if they are concerned.

Cardiac rehabilitation nurse and program coordinator Merrilyn Giacopelli said the program runs throughout the year and features sessions with a social worker, dietitian, mental health nurse, cardiac nurse, physiotherapist and an allied health assistant.

Each rehabilitation cycle lasts for about seven weeks, running one afternoon a week, and there are always two different sessions running in tandem.

She said patients are often referred

from Melbourne hospitals as part of their recovery, or they can self refer, and all participants are given a comprehensive assessment at the start of the program.

Ms Giacopelli said the program includes people of various age groups and from all walks of life.

“Ill health doesn’t discriminate,” she said.

In the case of a collision where players sustain injuries to the mouth, the ADA website provides advice on the crucial steps coaches, support staff and players can take to maximise the chance damaged teeth can be saved.

Holistic approach to skin cancer

ONE of South Wangaratta Medical Centre’s newest doctors is passionate not only about treating skin cancer, but also educating the wider public about the condition so that fewer people have to suffer from it.

New doctor Gilles Laur recently began working at the practice, running a skin cancer clinic there, and said with the local area having one of the highest incidences of skin cancer in the state, the best way to prevent skin cancer and lower skin cancer rates was to focus on better education and early detection, as well as treatments.

“There is a real need in this part of Victoria,” he said.

He has extensive training in skin cancer medicine and is an accredited doctor from the Skin Cancer College of Australasia, as well as having a diploma

of skin cancer medicine and surgery.

He said 65 per cent of people get skin cancer at some point in their lives, and people need to maintain their vigilance for appearances of the condition.

Dr Laur said that sometimes, people do not visit the doctor about skin cancer until it is quite far advanced, and this can make treatment more difficult and invasive.

He added that as well as education, prevention and treatment, he saw after treatment care, monitoring of the condition and recovery as equally important in dealing with skin cancer.

Dr Laur said that in the near future, he hoped to reach out to professionals in industries such as hairdressing, skin therapy, physiotherapy and massage to help inform them more on ways they

can find and report skin cancer in their customers, as professionals such as these can often notice signs that family or friends may not see.

Having the new service here saves local patients having to travel to Shepparton or Albury for treatment, with many small procedures on skin cancer lesions able to be done on site, but Dr Laur added that referrals to other services for more serious or large scale cases can easily be obtained.

Appointments only require a short visit to the clinic, where you can be checked head to toe for suspicious lesions.

Dr Laur said that the clinic is also looking at developing non surgical treatment alternatives for skin cancer and also hope to obtain full body photography equipment for better detection.

Dr Laur is experienced with the detection and treatment of skin cancer in all skin types and complexions, and is available for consultations on weekdays by appointment.

Flu vaccination season almost upon us BE PREPARED | The time to get vaccinated against flu is almost here.

THE Australian Government has secured a supply of new vaccines which protect against four strains of influenza virus for the 2017 season.

The new vaccines will be made available free of charge from mid-April to at-risk groups through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and will also be available on the private market.

The 2017 quadrivalent influenza vaccines will cover two A strains of influenza (Michigan and Hong Kong) and two B strains of influenza (Brisbane and Phuket), as recommended by the World Health Organization.

Influenza is a significant cause of illness and death and we know that

getting an annual flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself, your family and the community from the virus.

Around 4.5 million doses of seasonal influenza vaccines will be made available in 2017 through the National Immunisation Program.

The best advice from medical experts is that it’s important to get a flu shot every year as the circulating viruses change.

Influenza is estimated to be responsible for more than 5000 hospitalisations and almost 170 deaths in Australia each year.

The burden of influenza on Australians varies from year to year,

depending on the predominant circulating subtype.

People affected are most commonly young children and older adults.

Pregnant women are at particularly high risk of becoming seriously ill with influenza.

The pharmaceutical companies GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi and Seqirus will be supplying ‘flu vaccines for the national program in 2017.

Receiving the vaccine from April allows protection from the flu to develop well ahead of the peak transmission period, which usually falls around August.

All Australians should consider getting a flu vaccine as the more people who get vaccinated against the flu, the less it spreads through the community, which means we are all better protected.

People at high risk of complications from the flu and associated illnesses should ask their doctor or vaccination provider for advice about their specific circumstances and their eligibility for a free vaccination.

How to get involved in Active April EVERY Victorian – no matter their age or ability – is being urged to follow in the footsteps of their heroes and improve their fitness and health during this year’s Premier’s Active April challenge.

By taking the first step, you can work your way up to an exercise or a sport that you love.

Research shows that up to 81 per cent of children don’t exercise enough and as many as 57 per cent of adults are at risk of chronic health problems due to their lack of physical activity.

That costs the community about $13.8 billion a year.

Turning that around, with just 30 minutes a day of exercise, can improve both physical and mental health.

Victorians urged to curb their consumption of salt A NEW study revealing the hidden salt content in some of Australia’s most popular bread products has prompted a call urging Victorians to curb their enthusiasm when it comes to processed foods concealing high levels of salt.

In an analysis of close to 1500 bread products from 2010-2017, researchers from The George Institute for Global Health found some loaves contained more than a third of the daily recommended salt intake in just two slices.

The results, released during World Salt Awareness Week (which occurred on Mar 20–26), act as a reminder to Victorians to be mindful of the amount of salt they’re consuming through processed and packaged foods populating our pantries and supermarket shelves.

Heart Foundation CEO KellieAnn Jolly said Victorian adults are consuming almost twice the recommended levels of salt, leading to an increased risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease including heart attack, stroke, and blood vessel disease.

“More than one in three adults in Victoria, or around 1.5 million people, have high blood pressure – a major contributor to heart disease – Victoria’s leading cause of death.

“The level of salt in processed foods is the greatest culprit when it comes to our salt consumption. In fact, 75 per cent our salt intake comes from the processed foods we eat every day, like some breads, processed meats, cheeses, sauces and spreads.”

VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said Victorians need to eat 6000 tonnes less salt each year to meet the World Health Organization’s target of reducing salt intake by 30 per cent by 2025.

“Visit the Don’t Trust Your Tastebuds website for more information on salt in the food supply,” Ms Jolly said.

Ms Rechter said the Victorian Salt Reduction Partnership, comprised of peak public health organisations, aimed to strengthen health policies and partnerships to reduce the amount of salt in processed food.

“The Partnership is working toward raising awareness of the ways in which people can reduce their salt intake, as well as working with industry and government to develop the availability of lower salt options.”

The Victorian Salt Reduction partnership is made up of VicHealth, The Heart Foundation, The George Institute, Stroke Foundation, Kidney Health Australia, Deakin University and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.

CUT DOWN | Locals are being urged to decrease their salt consumption.

“Reducing Victoria’s salt intake by 30 per cent would save hundreds of lives each year and close to $50 million in healthcare costs.

“Salt is responsible for six times more deaths in Victoria than the annual road toll. Eating less salt is an effective way to prevent high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes.”

Ms Jolly said the simplest way to avoid consuming too much salt in our diet is through limiting processed foods, and essential to this aim, is the

ability to understand salt and sodium content on food labels.

“When you’re looking at the sodium content on food labels, look for foods with less than 400mg of sodium. The best choices are those with less than 120mg of sodium per 100g. “ “There are also a number of tools available to help people make healthier, lower-salt choices, such as the FoodSwitch App and the Heart Foundation’s new sodium and salt converter.

SALTY FACTS: The average Victorian adult eats around 8-10 grams of salt each day, almost double the World Health Organization recommendation of less than 5 grams or one teaspoon per day.

Victorian children consume around 30 per cent more than the recommended daily salt limit.

Reducing the average daily salt intake in Victoria by around half a teaspoon (3grams) could achieve the potential cost saving of $47.4 million per year in health care costs alone.

Salt reduction in Victoria could save up to 800 Victorian lives a year from stroke and heart disease.

In Victoria, the number of deaths attributable to a high salt intake is around six times the annual road toll.
