WHEN potter John Dermer first arrived in Yackandandah in 1974, his Kirbys Flat property was little more than a “grass paddock with a stunning view”. Over the years – with this year marking his 50th year as a potter – he has built an enviable career and home, surrounded by nature and the bush. And John’s passion for creation remains just as strong as the day he first started. “I’ve always tried to stay pretty true to what I believe is a good pot,” he said. “You do that out of being honest to the materials, and to the process. “Materials are so important, you can lose so much time with bad materials.” His work appears in collections all over the world, and pottery that he was commissioned to make 30 years ago for Parliament House in Canberra still grace the Cabinet Room, where Mr Dermer and his wife visited and met with Cathy McGowan (MHR,Indi) recently. “It was a very proud moment in Canberra, a humbling experience,” he said. “I was commissioned to make the 10 large scale pots, the largest over 90cm wide, for the Prime Minister’s suite area and inside the entrance to the Cabinet Room. “I designed these pots with the idea that people would like to touch them, and the rims were so formed to compliment a person touching the rims. “The largest of the bowls, a Terra Sigillata piece, I would consider my best pot, as the pot has a pure and balanced form, and this is the basis in my mind for the essence of a good and proud pot.” continued page |
