IT’S the most conventional entry yet in the Mystery Road legacy, but this second season of outback detective Jay Swan’s (Gold Logie nominee Mark Coles Smith) prequel story is far from straightforward.
Expectant parents Swan and Mary (AACTA Award winner Tuuli Narkle, NCIS: Sydney) returned to her home town to raise her niece, Anya (Shardae Pitt), and prepare for their new arrival, but have instead found themselves at the centre of a 30-year-old mystery.
Nurse Mary is now working at the Loch Iris hospital, where she was born, a place enveloped in its own long shadow. In searching for answers about her own adoption, she has uncovered links to the local Catholic church, its shuttered orphanage and the systematic removal of Indigenous children from their mothers at birth.
“Mary’s searching for connection to herself, her past, her culture and a sense of family that is so brutally ripped
from her at every turn,” says Narkle of her character’s arc.
“Her, and little Anya’s, lives are irrevocably fractured by the lingering policies of the stolen generations and whilst there might be new language we use to describe removing children, the effects are still the same.
“This felt particularly poignant given the number of First Nations children currently in care is at an all-time high.”
In Sunday’s entrancing conclusion, emotions run high as Swan continues his hunt for missing teen Swayze (The New Boy Aswan Reid), while sergeant Simmo (Robyn Malcolm) confronts ghosts of the past, and Mary finally learns the truth about her adoption – just in time to meet her own child.

The late Australian TV legend Brian Walsh is credited as being the brains behind countless memorable moments in entertainment. Not only did the pioneering publicist and media executive lead the revival of beloved soap opera Neighbours when it shifted to Network 10 in 1986, but he also spearheaded trailblazing rocker Tina Turner’s iconic “Simply The Best” promotional campaign for the NRL in the late 1980s.

This suspenseful tale will lull you into a false sense of security, before blowing your world apart.

MOTHER AND SON
ABC TV, Wednesday, 8.30pm
Comedians Matt Okine and Denise Scott knew they had “huge shoes to fill” in reimagining this classic 1980s comedy, and as their second season as Arthur and Maggie comes to an end tonight, it’s clear that they give the beloved characters the love and attention they deserve. Maggie (Scott) is approaching her 70th birthday and as her memory is starting to fail her, she’s determined to make her celebration one to remember. Arthur (Okine) also has a big birthday on the horizon, but it’s one he’d rather forget – so of course, his sister Robbie (Angela Nica Sullen) suggests a shared party. With a seating chart that resembles a detective’s suspect board, a choreographed dance and a lengthy guest list that even includes the local GP, it’s set to be an unforgettable shindig.

INTERPRETING DOG BODYCUES
By
RSPCA KNOWLEDGEBASE
Body language is one of a dog’s main ways they communicate with us, so it’s important we learn how to understand them.
Many people know that if a dog’s ears are flat against their head, it means they’re not comfortable or happy.
However, there are many different ear positions that, in conjunction with the tail position and movement, will tell you how your dog is feeling.
Staring directly into a dog’s eyes can be threatening.
Brief eye contact is fine, but you should avoid staring.
The other parts of the body to check are the tail, mouth, face, and general body stance.
The overall picture of the dog will reveal a great deal about how they are feeling.
Common signs of stress or fear include yawning, frequent blinking, lip licking, panting, turning their head away, and showing the white part of their eye.
If you see these signs (whether you are interacting with them or just observing), your dog is uncomfortable and needs your help and understanding to resolve the situation, so they feel comfortable again.
When interacting with your animal physically, watch their body language to see if they give consent for the interaction. This means understanding the signs that show they would prefer you stop the interaction or want it to continue.
Remember; never punish your dog when they growl as this is intended as a warning.
If it’s suppressed due to punishment, then they may not give a warning next time.
Your dog may need time to get used to strangers and children.
Children must be taught how to behave safely around dogs and should never be left unsupervised around them. STRESSED
What to do if bitten by a snake
As temperatures rise, snakes become more active, increasing the risk of bites, especially for those spending time outdoors.
Knowing how to respond quickly and correctly can be life saving.
If someone is bitten by a snake, the first and most critical step is to call 000 immediately for emergency medical assistance.
Keep the person calm and still to slow the spread of venom.
Move them away from the snake to prevent further bites, but avoid unnecessary movement.
Do not wash the bite, remove clothing, or attempt to catch or kill the snake.
For bites on limbs, apply a pressureimmobilisation bandage: start with a firm bandage over the bite site; wrap tightly from the fingers or toes upward, covering
as much of the limb as possible; and immobilise the limb with a splint, use a stick, rolled-up newspaper or similar item. For bites to the head, neck or torso, apply firm pressure with a cloth pad, ensuring chest movement is not restricted.
If the person becomes unconscious or stops breathing, begin CPR immediately. Continue to keep the person still and calm until medical help arrives.
Snake bite first aid kits are widely available at chemists and camping stores.
If you’re heading outdoors this summer, carrying one could make a critical difference.
Quick, calm and informed action is key to managing a snake bite safely. Always seek professional medical help and avoid DIY remedies or risky behaviour around snakes.

YELLOWBELLY ON THE BITE
By ROBBIE ALEXANDER WANGARATTA
The warm weather has arrived and it really is firing up the fish.
Sadly the usual spring rain is still yet to arrive and things are drying off very quickly.
During the week my wife and I went on a road trip out across the Hay plains.
To say it is dry up there is an understatement.
As soon as you get north of the Murray River it is as dry as a chip.
I fished the Billabong Creek at two locations and caught a few carp and also a few Murray cod.
All fish were caught using worms as bait.
I was targeting yellowbelly.
I am currently in a yellowbelly drought.
My social media newsfeed is alive with reports of yellowbelly being caught, but not by me.
At the moment, pretty much any waterway that has yellowbelly in it is worth fishing.
They have been caught in the Goulburn and Broken rivers as well as Lake Hume and Lake Eildon.
Lake Nillahcootie is finally starting to fire now too with a few reports of yellowbelly being caught there this week. They have been caught both off the bank and by anglers in boats using both bait and lures.
Glenrowan dam was stocked with 200 catchable rainbow trout on Sunday for Victoria’s “Gone Fishing Day”.
There was a free public event held at the dam on Sunday by the King River and District Fishing Club, but no doubt there will still be a few trout in the dam for anglers to catch in the coming weeks.
For those that don’t know where the Glenrowan dam is, it is behind the football ground at the Glenrowan Recreation Reserve.
