HEART OF GOLD

YOU’LL either fall head over heels in love with this fresh take on the reality TV dating show or get “the ick” immediately and start scouting for more suitable options.

After tempting the popular franchise away from Network 10’s warm embrace, Nine gives it a muchneeded glow-up by following older singletons on their determined quest to find an authentic romance in their later years.

Farmer Wants a Wife host Samantha Armytage is on hand to guide 61-year-old Barry “Bear” Myrden (pictured) as he gets to know 20 glamorous women between the ages of 51 and 66.

Can the charming widower and father of three adult sons find his soulmate among this group of accomplished ladies?

Myrden says it’s a surreal experience to be Australia’s first Golden Bachelor.

“It’s an incredible privilege that 20 remarkable women are willing to come on this journey with me, for all of us to have the courage to open our hearts and take the chance to fall in love again,” he says.

“I couldn’t be more grateful or excited to see where this trailblazing experience takes us.”

Armytage recently told Nine: “This is for people who are looking for love again. I kind of love that –these are people with life experience, and it’s totally fascinating.”

The past is also calling for Blue (Mavournee Hazel), who was hunted down by a mysterious woman (Doris Younane) with a sinister ulterior motive. The forensic scientist is nowhere to be seen in the premiere, having resigned from the team and left pathologist Doc Roy (William McInnes) without his right-hand renegade.

GRAND DESIGNS AUSTRALIA ABC TV, Thursday, 8pm

Architect professor Anthony Burke (pictured) returns to host a fresh season of this enduring series that follows ambitious home-builders as they embark on challenging projects that often push them to their financial and emotional limits. In Thursday’s premiere episode, musicians Matt and Kate face the harsh reality of Melbourne’s soaring property market and move to Cygnet in Tasmania to build two “earthships” – with no building experience, of course. Will their bold decision to create radical self-sufficient homes made from recycled bottles, rammed earth and cob prove to be an ingenious, low-cost solution? Or will their admirable dream transform into a nightmare?

END GAME WITH TONY ARMSTRONG ABC TV, Tuesday, 8.30pm

Former AFL player Tony Armstrong (pictured) has had enough. Fed up with PR-friendly excuses and failed marketing campaigns, the Logie-winning journalist is on a mission to effectively tackle racism in Australian sport and spark meaningful change for the next generation of players and fans. As Armstrong shares in Tuesday’s premiere, it’s not an easy problem to solve – and he’s personally been the target of online abuse before. Armstrong checks in with his hero Adam Goodes to take the temperature of Australian sport today, before jetting off to the UK, where he finds out how the issue is being addressed in the Premier League. It’s a vital conversation to have, and Armstrong is the right man for the job.

HAY SEASON LACKING

A new resources page has been launched to help farmers make critical decisions with spring failing to deliver as expected.

Feed Central has developed the resource to support farmers making hard decisions around harvesting grain or cutting for hay.

Managing director Tim Ford said farmers were now at a critical point in their decision making after the predicted wet spring failed to eventuate.

Mr Ford said the page had been developed in response to concerns raised by farmers about how to cope with the drier than anticipated season.

“We’ve had a lot of phone calls, especially from the southern states, because farmers aren’t having the spring they were expecting,” he said.

“It’s turning very dry and a lot of crops are not going to finish so it’s ‘knife-edge’ decision time for farmers who are running out of moisture and looking for help with crops failing to finish.”

The resources page Tools and Resources for Hay Season Decision-Making (https://www. feedcentral.com.au/hay-season-resources/)

incudes a Hay versus Grain Calculator, Tips for a Profitable Hay Season magazine, a market update, and other video resources.

Mr Ford said farmers were starting to worry

about the best way forward.

“Farmers want to know their options if their crops are not going to get through,” he said.

“Hay is a good option but you must manage the product.

“Stacking outside is a very short-term option, but if you use a good contractor, make it right and store it in a good shed, you will realise a good profit.

“Selling it off the paddock just after the baler is not always the best way to sell because of soft prices and we’re seeing that now in this drying-off time.

“Winter is the best market for selling hay but it must be done right.”

The Hay versus Grain - Gross Margin Calculator helps farmers to independently weigh up options as the season unfolds and compare hay and grain side by side to see which will deliver the stronger return.

Tips for a Profitable Hay Season magazine is an annual resource which brings together expert advice, industry insights, and grower information to support a successful season ahead.

“Having the numbers can help guide your decisions this season,” Mr Ford said.

“The goal of the resources page is to support farmers with information to make the decision that’s best for them.”

Thunderstorm asthma events can create high-risk conditions for people with asthma and hay fever.

Health Asthma season begins

People with asthma or hay fever are being urged to take steps now to protect themselves, as south-eastern Australia enters its high-risk thunderstorm asthma season.

Thunderstorm asthma events are well documented in south-eastern Australia and can create high-risk conditions for people with asthma and hay fever.

In this region, grass pollen typically peaks in November.

During thunderstorms, rain and moisture can cause pollen grains to absorb water and rupture into tiny sub-pollen particles (SPPs), and storm-driven winds then push these small particles down to ground level, where people may inhale them.

Chris Pearce, GP and Asthma Australia Board Member, said for people with asthma, thunderstorm asthma can escalate quickly and be life-threatening.

“Now is the time to check your asthma control with your GP, use your preventer as recommended and make sure you have an up-to-date Asthma Action Plan, which

formalises how to manage asthma and what to do if symptoms worsen,” he said.

Dr Pearce said most people with asthma would take their reliever out with them because symptoms can flare when they are exposed to triggers like grass pollen.

“We want to make sure people with asthma are up to date with best practice,” he said.

“The latest asthma guidelines recommend against relying on a blue reliever inhaler alone.

“Anti-inflammatory relievers containing both a preventer and reliever medicine are now recommended in place of the blue reliever alone.

“People with hay fever can also be affected during thunderstorm asthma events, even if they’ve never been diagnosed with asthma.

“Those who are sensitive to grass pollen, or wheeze and cough at night or get short of breath when grass pollen is high should prioritise seeing their GP to make sure they are assessed for asthma.”

You can check grass pollen levels using the AirRater App which provides real-time forecasts and warnings, to help you plan your day.

GREAT TIME TO FISH

Trout are biting well in the streams and the lowland species of fish are also getting more and more active each week.

Last week my friend Sonny and I fished a tributary of the Ovens River.

We were up in the hills fishing for trout, and managed to catch five between us.

The average size trout is bigger than last season, but there were no monsters caught - the biggest was a lovely rainbow trout around 33cm or so.

Overall the trout fishing in North East Victorian streams is much better this season than it was last season, but is still not fantastic.

There are still plenty of streams that appear to have little to no fish in them.

On the weekend I went to Echuca to visit friends and on the way home I fished at three spots.

I fished the Murray River at Barmah and

Finally I fished the Boosey Creek near Katamatite (essentially the Broken Creek) and it was really slow and I only caught one carp.

I was using worms as bait in all three places.

I have seen a couple of photos of small redfin that have been caught in Lake Hume this week which is encouraging. Redfin have been largely absent from Lake Hume for the last 18 months or so.

Hopefully as the weather warms up we start to see more redfin turning up.

Still on Lake Hume, there have been a lot of yellowbelly caught in the past week.

Anglers using Live scope fish finders are by far catching the most fish, but I have seen a photo of two nice yellowbelly that were trolled on a 50mm AC Invader lure.

caught two small trout cod and one carp.
Then I fished Broken Creek near Numurkah were I caught a couple of carp and lost another fish that I am pretty sure was a yellowbelly.
