BUILDING BLOCKS

RENOVATION reality TV

behemoth The Block is embarking on its 21st season – one which will see the show celebrate its 1000th episode – with Scott Cam and Shelley Craft (both pictured) once again at the helm, but they are still finding ways to keep things fresh.

“What the audience can expect from this year is what I would call a classic Block series,” says showrunner Julian Cress. This season, the action will take place in the idyllic Victorian spa town of Daylesford (“a very beautiful town with an amazing community,” says Cress), and the first twist on the format is a massive one: instead of renovating existing

properties, the

will be

“For the contestants, it’s a fresh start every week,” Craft says.

“Rather than a dirty, grubby, messy start where they had to demolish a room and rebuild it in a week, to come into a clean frame is a much better mindset to be in.”

But there’s another major change on the cards this time around – allnighters are now banned, which may throw a spanner in the works for those who find time management a bit of a challenge.

STREAMING HIGH SOCIETY

Keeping track: Eldest sister Nancy Mitford (Bessie Carter) narrates her siblings’ exploits in Outrageous

THE ASSASSIN

Streaming from Friday, Stan

Former assassin Julie (Keeley Hawes, Bodyguard) is trying desperately to enjoy a quiet retirement on an idyllic Greek Island. But it’s hard to really, truly relax when you used to kill people for a living. As her past – and questions about the paternity of her son Edward (Freddie Highmore, pictured with Hawes – begin to catch up with her, she is forced to pick up where she left off as the pair to go on the run.

HIJINKS

OUTRAGEOUS

Streaming from Thursday, BritBox

Back in 1930s Britain, the six aristocratic Mitford sisters shocked society in many and varied ways with their radical, rule-breaking life choices.

Politics is the thread that ties things all together, while also threatening to tear the family (and possibly also the country) apart.

When we first meet glamorous Diana (Joanna Vanderham, left), she is married to one of the richest men in London but can’t stop thinking about revolution, and soon both she and sister Unity (Shannon Watson)

HAPPY GILMORE 2

Streaming, Netflix

Almost 30 years since he won the Tour Championship, Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler, pictured) – the most unorthodox golfer the sport has ever seen – is coming out of retirement. With his daughter Vienna (Sunny Sandler) hoping to go to an expensive ballet school, Happy is dusting off the golf clubs and taking a swing at winning his way to paying for her tuition.

are on their way to becoming fascists and even getting close to Hitler.

Jessica (Zoe Brough), on the other hand, is rapidly becoming a communist, and is ideologically opposed to everything her right-wing siblings stand for.

Eldest sister Nancy (Bridgerton’s Bessie Carter) is our narrator here, and is a writer who would rather not get involved in politics but nonetheless finds herself caught up in the family drama.

Other sisters Pam (Isobel Jesper Jones) and Deborah (Orla Hill) have a smaller role in this first season, but will surely make waves of their own in time.

It all makes for a political and social cocktail which is possibly even more eyebrow-raising now than it would have been at the time, and is thoroughly entertaining to watch. – Emily Delahunt

SOLD! WHO BROKE THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM? Streaming, Binge

Satirist Mark Humphries (pictured) looks at where it all went wrong in the Aussie housing market in a comedic documentary, trying to uncover why it is so hard for so many to get – and keep – a roof over their heads these days. From soaring rents and out-of-control auctions to negative gearing and capital gains tax, the ins and outs of the housing crisis are examined in a humorous and engaging way.

ACAPULCO

Streaming, Apple TV+

One of the most fun, feel-good (and brightly coloured) shows around returns for its fourth and final season. With present-day Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) working towards Las Colinas’ grand reopening, the 1986 version of our hero (Enrique Arrizon, pictured with Camila Perez) is also trying to restore the hotel to its former glory after a competitor claims its title as the best hotel in Acapulco.

WASHINGTON BLACK

Streaming, Disney+

This odyssey, based on Esi Edugyan’s novel and produced by and starring This is Us’ Sterling K. Brown, follows the story of George Washington Black (played by Eddie Karanja, pictured, and Ernest Kingsley Jr), a prodigy born into slavery on a Barbados sugar plantation. Aged 11, “Wash” is forced to flee the only life he’s ever known, leading to an adventure beyond his wildest dreams.

FREE-TO-AIR

HARD QUIZ

ABC TV, Wednesday 8pm

In this series return of the quiz show with the driest wit on telly, we have a contestant with one of the more left-field specialist subjects we’ve seen – sunscreen. “Cancer’s notoriously not good,” self-proclaimed SPF expert Isobel explains to host Tom Gleeson. Going down a more traditional path of fandom are Stat, a New York Yankees fanatic, and Sophie, who’s obsessed with the Barbie movie. Rounding out our group of contestants is Noel, a retired art teacher who picked one of the world’s most famous paintings, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa as his area of expertise.

PORTUGAL WITH MICHAEL PORTILLO SBS, Monday, 7.30pm

AUSTIN

ABC TV, Sunday, 7.30pm

Literary fame is calling for plucky young writer Austin (Love on the Spectrum’s wonderfully authentic Michael Theo) when his novel is picked up by an international publisher in the second season of this hit comedy. Success is also calling for his father Julian (Ben Miller) and stepmother Ingrid (Sally Phillips, pictured, left, with Theo and Miller), who have sold their Big Bear series to Aussie TV execs. However, Julian’s lingering scandals see him cut out of the creative process – an axing that he won’t take lying down. DNA test results are the hot topic of Sunday’s premiere – is Julian really Austin’s father? As they weigh their feelings about it, the trio take a trip to Northampton.

From Michael Portillo’s (pictured) countless Railway Journeys to his envious Long Weekends jaunts, and now this six-part series discovering the cultural riches and stunning landscapes of Portugal, it’s hard to believe there isn’t yet a dedicated “SBS Portillo” channel. In this second episode, Portillo explores the north of the country, where the history buff is delighted to find significant Roman influence and architecture in Braga, Portugal’s oldest city, and Ponte de Lima, its oldest town.

FBI: MOST WANTED 10, Tuesday, 9.40pm

There’s both good news and bad for fans of this high-stakes police procedural: while US network CBS cancelled both Most Wanted and its fellow FBI spin-off, International, earlier this year; the silver lining for Aussie fans is that we’ve still got a full season of new episodes to catch up on before Supervisory Special Agent Remy Scott (Dylan McDermott, pictured) and the squad tackle their final case. Tonight, the task force must act quickly when two officers are gunned down during a robbery, and another pair gets targeted while responding to a call.

SAND COLIC IN HORSES

We have been seeing a lot of cases of colic in horses lately.

Colic simply means abdominal pain.

Horses with colic can show a variety of symptoms, ranging from pawing at the ground and watching their flank, to lathering up in a sweat and throwing themselves upon the ground, rolling violently.

There are many different causes of colic, which is why it is always best to have a colicky horse examined by a vet as soon as possible in order to differentiate a mild spasmodic colic from a life-threatening twisted gut.

One of the reasons we see an increase in colic is very dry conditions, which causes horses to eat a significant amount of dirt and sand.

Some horses may ingest large amounts of sand and never colic.

But other horses can develop a spasmodic discomfort, diarrhea or weight

loss from the irritation caused by the sand passing through the intestine.

Sand may also build up in the gut over time, slowing digestion and causing impaction of the intestine.

The best way to prevent sand colic is to ensure your horse doesn’t ingest too much sand or dirt in the first place.

Use hay nets or racks, and place rubber matting under them to catch the hay that inevitably falls out.

Where possible, avoid keeping horses in overgrazed paddocks and always ensure clean fresh water is always available.

If your horse does suffer from episodes of sand colic, feeding a high fibre diet can be helpful to move the sand through the intestine.

Free access to large amounts of grass hay works best.

If this isn’t possible, psyllium husk added to feed may be useful.

Start with about a cup per day for a week, and then repeat a month later.

Older remedies such as feeding wheat bran and drenching with mineral oil have been shown to be ineffective at removing sand.

Snow Snow delight

After the bumper crowds during the past two weeks of school holidays in Victoria and NSW, you can expect things to be a little bit hectic, but still spectacular snow experiences, at our alpine resorts this week.

Both Mt Hotham and Falls Creek began this week with average snow depths of 90cms or more, providing excellent expert, intermediate and beginner terrain options for skiers and snowboarder within the resorts, and some superb off-piste and backcountry experiences outside the groomed boundaries.

With the International Poma commencing its season on 15 July, Falls Creek became the first resort in Australia to have all its lifts operating, and terrain opened, for the 2025 season.

Cold fronts are forecast to deliver more snowfalls this week, which will only enhance the appeal of heading up to our mountain resorts.

A big novelty event at Falls Creek this Friday is the Wombat’s Rambler Night Race.

This a ski and snowboard race is one of the longest ski races in Australia, and the only race

under lights, and it will turn legs to jelly and get hearts racing.

It also provides the perfect excuse to say up mountain overnight.

Meanwhile, Mt Hotham has a big event of its own this week, with the Freeride World Tour kicking off tomorrow.

Australia’s best freeriders will take on Peach Bowl in Heavenly Valley in one the fastest growing snow sports in the world.

Elsewhere, Dinner Plain remains a winter wonderland with village visitors are continuing to enjoy tobogganing on Australia’s longest run, and great cross country skiing on local trails. And at Mt Buffalo its toboggan runs at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley are opened and its network of cross country ski trails are offering fantastic experiences.

Remember you must carry chains when visiting the alpine resorts and fit them when and where directed.
