SPOILER alert: Ronan Keating can’t catch a break in Sunday night’s premiere of The Voice Australia. A veteran of the series, who’s mentored singers in Australian, UK and German versions of the reality juggernaut, the Irish hitmaker begins the second night of Blind Auditions with an empty team.
To be fair, his fellow coaches are tough opposition: operatic alt-pop powerhouse Kate Miller-Heidke, Spice Girl Melanie C and Grammy Award-winning superstar Richard Marx have got some serious tricks up their sleeves.
That doesn’t mean that there’s any disharmony between the stars. Despite their friendly onscreen competition, Keating enthuses, “this is my favourite bunch of coaches I’ve ever worked with.”
“I love them. The relationship between us all is brilliant. We are all strong enough to be able to go up against each other, but nobody makes any snide remarks. It’s a bunch of people I respect. And I’m really happy to be on this panel.
“Kate is possibly the best female singer in this country and for someone of her stature to be on the panel is a huge bonus for all artists involved. Richard is a legend and a very dear friend of mine. We’ve written songs together. I put him on a pedestal. Melanie is one of my oldest friends. We’ve known each other for over 30 years. We grew up together in the industry, we’ve both watched each other grow. I hold her in high regard, not just as artist but as a human being as well.”
In Monday’s episode, the smooth-talking singer is looking for a voice that “stands out from the crowd”. Can he successfully convince tarot reader Milly, piano man Mitchell or former forester Chris to join team Ronan?

STREAMING UNHAPPY RETURN
WEDNESDAY
Streaming, Netflix
Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) is even more unhappy than usual. For one, she has returned to Nevermore Academy (after a delightful summer spent chasing serial killers) to find she is now… popular.
“The atmosphere at Nevermore in the beginning of the school year is a living hell,” Ortega says. “It’s this terrible situation for Wednesday and she’s very upset.”
Adding to that, school is no longer a refuge from her family, with brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) bringing his electrifying powers to the academy and mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) taking up a philanthropic position there. “The family being more associated with Nevermore is a little bit of a thorn in Wednesday’s side,” explains Zeta-Jones.
Luckily for Wednesday, one family member who she actually does appreciate – Grandmama Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley) – is also making a prominent appearance. “Hester is also somebody Wednesday can use against her mother” coshowrunner Alfred Gough says. “It’s a delicious family triangle to set up.”
Also new around the school is Principal Dort (Steve Buscemi), who is big on outcast pride (“He’s basically ‘Mr Nevermore’ – and the opposite of the late Principal Weems,” says co-showrunner Miles Millar). Isadora Capri (Billie Piper) and Rosaline Rotwood (Lady Gaga) are among the other new faculty faces, and the big names don’t end there, with Thandiwe Newton, Frances O’Connor and Haley Joel Osment also playing their part. Meanwhile, Wednesday has been honing her powers – but they soon start glitching. Can they be trusted?
After an extended pause between the first and second seasons, fans of Tim Burton’s kooky series are in for a doubly delicious dark treat, with part two in store on September 3. – Emily Delahunt

Streaming, Binge and Foxtel
Sam Neill (pictured) returns as barrister Brett Colby, this time acting for the defence when the husband of an old friend finds himself in the dock over the killing of a woman who was poking around a cold-case murder. Of course, this series is as much about the jurors (and their prejudices) as it is the case, and it’s a good lesson in why you shouldn’t judge people too quickly.
OUTLANDER: BLOOD OF MY BLOOD
Streaming from Saturday, Stan
This prequel to popular fantasy romance Outlander steps back in time to 1714, during an earlier Jacobite rebellion, and tells the love stories of Claire and Jamie’s respective parents. Ellen and Brian (Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy, both pictured) must overcome the objections of their rival clans; while during World War I, Julia (Hermione Corfield) falls in love with Henry (Jeremy Irvine), a soldier she’s never even met.

Unresolved sexual tension has been the bedrock of so many successful on-screen partnerships, but this show takes it firmly out of the equation for avowed besties Sylvia and Will (Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen, both pictured), bringing the buddy comedy vibes – and it’s the better for it. This second season sees Will in a new relationship with Jenna (Carla Gallo), who’s not sure about his friendship with Sylvia.

CLARKSON’S FARM
Wednesday, Nine, 8.45pm
In the words of Jeremy Clarkson (pictured), “farming doesn’t have many happy endings”. And, as Clarkson’s Farm returns for a third season, those words ring true. After a triumphant end to season two saw Clarkson and the gang open their restaurant against all the odds, we return to Diddly Squat to find that everything has come crashing down. The local council has shut down the restaurant, the crops are failing in hot weather, inflation has driven prices sky high, and the farm shop is facing closure. Desperate for new income, Clarkson decides to “farm the unfarmed”.

IQ ANTENNA
After 10 years and nearly 100 episodes sharing the best stories from rural Australia with us, Heather Ewart farewelled the show in last week’s episode, and now we need to get comfortable with having someone else at the News Breakfast host Lisa Millar (pictured) is in the driver’s seat now, and her first destination is a dead-set country icon – the Snowy River. Near its source on slopes of Mount Kosciuszko, Millar meets 98-year-old Tommy, who shares his stories about building the Snowy Hydro Scheme.

In this femaleforward drama, adapted from the novel by Aussie author Sally Hepworth, the indemand star plays Isabelle, a mysterious stranger who moves into the seemingly idyllic seaside community of Osprey Point – but she’s not the only one with something to hide. A stellar local cast in Bella Heathcote (Pieces of Her Bob Morley (Love Me) and Catherine McClements (Tangle) – to name just a few – bolsters this addictive suburban mystery.

Every pet owner wants to keep their furry friend safe, but even the most careful pet parents can’t predict the unexpected.
That’s where microchipping comes in; a simple, safe, and effective way to dramatically increase the chances of being reunited with a lost pet.
What is a microchip?
A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice, that is inserted just under your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades.
It contains a unique identification number that links to your contact information in a secure pet registry database.
Microchips don’t show your pet’s location in real time, but they do serve as a permanent form of identification.
Why microchipping matters:
1. It greatly increases reunification rates
Studies have shown that microchipped dogs are over twice as likely to be returned to their owners, while microchipped cats are over 20 times more likely to make it home compared to those without a chip.
2. Collars and tags can fall off
While collars and ID tags are still important, they can break, slip off, or become unreadable.
A microchip is implanted safely under the skin and can’t be lost or removed.
3. It’s quick, safe, and affordable
Implanting a microchip is a quick procedure, similar to a vaccination.
It’s usually done during a routine vet visit and causes only brief discomfort.
It’s a one-time cost that provides lifelong peace of mind.
4. Required by law in some areas
In Australia, microchipping is legally required for pet registration in local councils.
It’s also often a condition for adoption from shelters or rescues.
5. It helps reduce stray populations
Pets without microchips that end up in shelters are less likely to be claimed and more likely to be rehomed or euthanised.
A registered chip gives your pet a voice when you’re not around.
However, don’t forgot to keep your details updated - a microchip is only as effective as the contact information attached to it.
If you move house, change phone numbers, or rehome your pet, be sure to update your details with the microchip registry.

FUN IN THE SNOW
Home
By JEFF ZEUSCHNER
Sunshine has replaced snowfalls over the past week, and tens of thousands of visitors to Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Dinner Plain and Mt Buffalo have been making the most of the fabulous conditions.
Both Falls Creek and Mt Hotham continue to have all ski lifts operating, offering an excellent range of expert, intermediate and beginner terrain options for skiers and snowboarders, as well as specific areas for snowplay (tobogganing) and cross country skiing.
As of Monday this week, Falls Creek’s average snow depth was 110cms, with all three of its terrain parks opened and cross country skiers able to enjoy 48kms of groomed trails ranging from excellent to fair cover, while backcountry enthusiasts also having plenty of options.
For those wanting something extra, Falls Creek’s Wombat’s Ramble lights up on Wednesday and Saturday evenings from 6.15pm to 8.45pm for night skiing and boarding, and there is the Fireworks Fiesta to enjoy every Thursday evening in the Village Bowl from 7pm.
Hotham started this week with an average snow depth of 117cms, having so far received 265cm of snowfall for the season.
The resort will have plenty of competitive action on the slopes this week, with Hotham Boardriders Club to run their annual Gun Barrel Banker Slalom event this Friday, while on Saturday the Hotham Hammer is back, with the best young mogul skiers to compete on the bumps course at Big D.
Dinner Plain will host the annual Sled Dog Sprint this weekend, and visitors can also enjoy tobogganing on Australia’s longest run, and great cross country skiing on local trails. And at Mt Buffalo its toboggan runs at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley are opened and its network of cross country ski trails are offering fantastic experiences.
Remember you must carry chains when visiting the alpine resorts and fit them when and where directed.

Giving back to five groups in August
By CHELSEA IBROM MY SLICE OF LIFE, NORTH EAST HOMEMAKERS
At North East Homemakers Centre, we’ve always believed the heart of any home is its community.
That’s why this August, we’re proud to offer our Giving Back promotion - donating five per cent of our profits to five local organisations, making a real difference where it matters most.
Centre Against Violence, NESAY, Carevan, Project 365, and Big Brothers Big Sisters each support vulnerable people across our region, from youth outreach and mentoring to crisis support and food security.
Their work is inspiring - and essential.
As a locally-owned business, we’ve been part
of the North East for many years.
This community has supported us through thick and thin, and this month, we’re honoured to return that support in a meaningful way. When you shop with us in August, you’re not just furnishing your home - you’re helping furnish hope, stability, and care in the lives of others.
Whether it’s a new lounge suite, a mattress for better sleep, or a dining table to gather around, every purchase helps us contribute to organisations that lift people up every single day.
We know home means more than four walls. It’s the people, the stories, and the support we give one another that truly make a community strong.
Join us this August as we give back to the place we call home.
