IN the footy wasteland that is the prefinals bye, we finally have something worth tuning into. No, not the cyclonedelayed Suns-Bombers match (yawn) –rather, after a six-year Covid-induced hiatus, the popular AFL Legends Game is back.
Considerably less serious than what will be taking place on field over the finals, this tongue-in-cheek match is always a good bit of fun, with players, officials and the commentary team all conspiring to keep things as entertaining as possible.
As before, it’s also for a good cause, raising money for the Australian Prostate Centre in honour of football legend EJ Whitten, who died from prostate cancer 30 years ago.
The Victorians v All Stars format is maintained, with recent AFL Hall of Fame inductee Luke Hodge captaining a Big V team that includes Gary Ablett Jr, Brendan Fevola, Dane Swan, Stevie J, Bob Murphy and Brent “Boomer” Harvey.
“I wasn’t originally going to play,” Fevola told SEN as his involvement was revealed. “You get older and I didn’t want to fail –but my kids made me.”
Nick Riewoldt leads an All Stars side featuring Cyril Rioli, Ben Cousins, Dan Gorringe, Andrew McLeod and Isaac Smith.
“For me, the chance to play alongside Cyril… I’m excited about that,” Cousins told listeners of his WA radio show about why he chose to take part – while trying to sound confident about his return to the footy field.
“It’s supposed to be like riding a bike, isn’t it? It’s a young man’s game but I can get myself up for one, surely.
“How hard can it be?”

PEACEMAKER
Season two streaming from Friday, HBO Max
Peacemaker – the man who loves peace so much he’s willing to kill for it – has turned out to be the unlikely star of James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, and at long last, the antihero returns for this morally grey comedy’s second season.
The messed-up black ops gang now known as the 11th Street Kids may have saved the world from the Butterflies in season one, but do you think anyone is saying thank you? Of course they aren’t – and after Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) turned whistleblower, most of our heroes are on the outer, which is having different effects on each of them.
Economos (Steve Agee) is actually still working for ARGUS, but it’s a gig that
will see his loyalties tested. Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), who has never been anything but a soldier, is seeking out bar fights. Ade is trying to start up her own business, and Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) is back to bussing tables. Meanwhile, our Peacemaker Chris (the impeccably cast John Cena) is still trying to numb the pain of his past –only now, he’s surrounded by more reminders of it.
So when Chris accidentally stumbles upon an interdimensional portal to another world where everything is a lot like the one he knows, only much, much better, it’s little wonder he’s tempted to move there permanently.
Strap yourself in for another wild and crazy ride featuring eagle fights, weirdos, a touch more romance and a brand new title dance sequence –because there’s no wrong time to rock. – Emily Delahunt
REALITY CHECK
THE MAP THAT LEADS TO YOU
American twentysomething Heather (Madelyn Cline) was not looking for love on her European summer adventure with her besties. But when she meets mysterious and magnetic New Zealander Jack (Riverdale’s KJ Apa, pictured with Cline), everything changes. Their connection is something special – but is it enough to make Heather throw away all her carefully laid plans for her future back home?
LONG STORY SHORT
Streaming from Friday, Netflix
From the creators of BoJack Horseman comes this animated adult comedy about family life. Jumping through time, it follows the Schwooper siblings as children and adults, dissecting their generational trauma along the way. With a voice cast that includes Paul Reiser, Lisa Edelstein, Ben Feldman, Abbi Jacobson and Max Greenfield, it’s packed with talent, too.
The outstandingly hilarious Kiwi version of this chaotic comedy game show returns for its sixth season of strange challenges set by Taskmaster
Wells and his assistant Paul Williams. Playing along this season are comedians Jackie van
Alice Snedden, Jack Ansett, Bree Tomasel and Pax Assadi (pictured, clockwise from left). It’s rather unhinged nonsense for the most part, but that’s just the way we like it.
SAFE HARBOR
Streaming from Thursday, SBS On Demand
This new crime thriller from Ozark’s Mark Williams follows Tobias (Alfie Allen, pictured) and Marco (Martijn Lakemeier), a pair of hackers who dream of becoming tech billionaires. That ambition leads them astray when they take on a job for the Irish mob: hacking the container system at Europe’s largest port. In over their heads, the pair find themselves drawn into a gang war.
THE
BOY THAT NEVER WAS
Streaming from Friday, Stan
An Irish family – parents Harry and Robin (Colin Morgan and Toni O’Rourke, both pictured) and their young son, Dillon – are enjoying the expat life in Morocco, until an earthquake hits Tangier, claiming the boy’s life. But his body was never found. Five years later, Harry thinks he sees him… what if Dillon isn’t dead after all? This fourpart thriller is full of twists that will keep you guessing.

SHAUN MICALLEF’S EVE OF DESTRUCTION
ABC TV, Wednesday, 8.30pm
Comedy legend Shaun Micallef returns for a second season of his chat show, where he asks two well-known people what beloved items they would save from their home before it’s destroyed by a hilarious and improbable disaster. This unique premise is really just a springboard for the affable Micallef to dive into guests’ personal lives and their most cherished possessions. This episode features two fascinating folks: the venerable Lisa McCune (whom Micallef once worked with on Blue Heelers back in 1998) and A-League Men’s star Josh Cavallo, one of the world’s only openly gay professional footballers.
GUY MONTGOMERY’S GUY MONT SPELLING BEE (NZ)
ABC Entertains, Saturday, 8.05pm
It’s a testament to the brilliance of this new comedic game show that it doesn’t matter whether the panellists are household names (Rove McManus, Tom Gleeson and Urzila Carlson have all appeared in the Aussie version), up-and-coming talents or – in this case –comedians from New Zealand that local audiences have likely never heard of. It’s hilarious viewing, regardless of who’s behind the podiums. Newly minted Logie winner Guy Montgomery is assisted in this edition by the deadpan delight Sanjay Patel. Tonight, they welcome contenders Pax Assadi, Justine Smith and Robbie Nicol to try and take down the carryover champ.
I, JACK WRIGHT
ABC TV, Sunday, 8.55pm
An outstanding ensemble drama from Unforgotten creator Chris Lang, this new series proves that where there’s a will, there’s a family. It’s not long after the titular businessman (Trevor Eve) apparently commits suicide that his many wives and children begin clamouring for their share of his estate. You might need a chart to keep track of everyone: John Simm, Daniel Rigby, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Gemma Jones, Zoë Tapper, Sabrina Bartlett and Nikki Amuka-Bird portray the extended
BLOCK Nine, Monday, 7.30pm
Keeping a secret on The Block is no mean feat – for one, the houses aren’t yet entirely enclosed spaces. But for four weeks now, Adelaide best mates Robby and Mat (both pictured) have managed to keep a lid on plans for a giant hole in their backyard (slated to become a game-changing underground wine cellar). With another Domain Open for Inspection in Monday’s episode, and a clandestine cavern the size of a small home hiding in plain sight, will the “whole” truth come out, or are their fellow Blockheads too sleepdeprived to notice? Both living and dining room spaces – and a comedy roast challenge – are on this week’s agenda for the contestants, so they’d certainly be forgiven if it were the latter.

WORTH A CHECKUP: As dogs age, it’s not unusual for them to develop some kind of lump on their body. And although some can be harmless, it’s important to get it checked out at the vet. PHOTO: Yobab/ Shutterstock.com
WHAT’S THAT LUMP?
By WARBY STREET VETERINARY CLINIC
Dogs of all ages can develop various types of lumps on their bodies.
As they get older, they are more likely to grow some form of unusual lump.
Lumps can vary in their severity from benign (non-harmful) to malignant (very dangerous, possibly fatal cancers).
However, it is also worth noting that nonharmful lumps can cause problems if they are in a location that affects body function.
For example, benign lumps on the eyelids are inherently non-harmful; but because they can lift the eyelid away from the eye’s surface, they can actually cause dryness and redness in the eye, which becomes harmful to the dog.
It is a good idea to have any new lump assessed by your veterinarian, especially if it seems to be growing rapidly or is bleeding and ulcerated.
From the veterinarian’s point of view the safest thing to do with most lumps is to remove them and send them for
analysis at the laboratory.
However, we have to take into account the dog’s age, health, and the likelihood that the lump is going to do the dog harm.
There are some simple biopsy techniques (ie. a needle biopsy) that can be used to try and get more information about the type of lump to help with the decision making process.
Veterinarians regularly perform this procedure and are quite good at diagnosing many types of lumps.
If there is a more unusual appearance under the microscope, they may enlist the opinion of a veterinary pathologist to help with the diagnosis.
Acting sooner rather than later with lumps is the best strategy as early removal is always faster, easier, cheaper, and carries a better prognosis than trying to remove a large malignant lump at a late stage in the disease process.
So the bottom line is this - if your dog has a lump that hasn’t been checked, it would be best to make them an appointment for an assessment as well as a general health check while they are there.

Care Support at home
By MICHELLE AZARIS TIMELESS SUPPORT
What will the Support at Home program mean for Home Care Package recipients?
From 1 November 2025, Australia’s aged care system will see one of its biggest changes with the introduction of the Support at Home program.
This new system will replace Home Care Packages and several other programs, aiming to make aged care services simpler, fairer, and more flexible.
A key part of the reform is the “no worse off” principle, meaning if you are already receiving a Home Care Package, you will not be disadvantaged when
you move to the new system. Your care, funding, and services will continue, with adjustments to ensure you receive at least the same level of support. It’s also important to remember that even after Support at Home begins, you can still choose to move your Home Care Package to another provider at any time without losing your unspent balance.
This ensures you remain in control of your care and can select the provider that best meets your needs.
If you have any questions about the changes or what they mean for you, call Timeless Support on 1300 292 747. We are here to guide you through the transition and ensure you continue receiving the quality care you deserve.
FOR THOSE WHO PREFER A HIGHER LEVEL OF CARE
Timeless Support has been approved to provide subsidised home care services through the Australian Government. Depending on your circumstances you may be able to receive care and services, funded either fully or partly by the Government.
We can support you on your journey.
Snow PLENTY OF SNOW
WINTER PLAYGROUND: Falls Creek was looking every bit a winter wonderland on the weekend.
By JEFF ZEUSCHNER
Fresh weekend snowfalls of 15cms at Hotham and 12cms at Falls Creek, together with snowmaking, have helped freshen up the resorts, which are forecast to enjoy sunny, but cool spring-like conditions for much of this week.
Falls Creek’s average snow depth was 110cms on Monday, while Hotham was 117cms - with lifts operating and extensive terrain available for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders, as well as snow play and tobogganing available at Windy Corner (Falls) and Wire Plain (Hotham).
Cross country options also remain varied at both resorts, with Falls’ 30kms of groomed trails ranging from excellent to poor.
Australia’s premier cross country ski race, the Kangaroo Hoppet will be a focus at Falls Creek this Saturday, with an expected 900 skiers - from elite to beginner - to compete over the 42km, 21km and 7km distances. Meanwhile at Hotham, the Oakley Slopestyle in back this Saturday, with some of the best freestyle skiers and riders to throwdown in an event not to be missed.
Mt Hotham’s wonderland extends beyond skiing and snowboarding - with
snowshoeing through snowgum trails, sledding with huskies, or spending a magical night under the stars in the Eco-Village all available.
Dinner Plain started this week with the Cobungra Platter ski lift operating on a 20cm cover, tobogganing on Australia’s longest run, and very patchy snow cover on cross country trails available.
At Mt Buffalo, Dingo Dell toboggan run remains closed due to insufficient snow but Cresta Valley toboggan run is open, but icy and fast.
For cross country trail skiing is limited and for beginner skiers the first 500 metres of the Horn Road and the carpark end of the Bogong loop is best.
The “off trail” back country areas offer fair spring style cross country skiing for more experienced skiers.
Remember you must carry chains when visiting the alpine resorts and fit them when and where directed.
And ff you’re headed to the snow make sure you take the sun screen.

Home Giving back this August
By CHELSEA IBROM MY SLICE OF LIFE, NORTH EAST HOMEMAKERS
At North East Homemakers Centre, we’ve always believed the heart of any home is its community.
That’s why this August, we’re proud to offer our Giving Back promotion - donating five per cent of our profits to five local organisations, making a real difference where it matters most.
Centre Against Violence, NESAY, Carevan, Project 365, and Big Brothers Big Sisters each support vulnerable people across our region, from youth outreach and mentoring to crisis support and food security. Their work is inspiring - and essential.
As a locally-owned business, we’ve been part of the North East for many years.
This community has supported us through thick and thin, and this month, we’re honoured to return that support in a meaningful way.
When you shop with us in August, you’re not just furnishing your home - you’re helping furnish hope, stability, and care in the lives of others.
Whether it’s a new lounge suite, a mattress for better sleep, or a dining table to gather around, every purchase helps us contribute to organisations that lift people up every single day.
We know home means more than four walls.
It’s the people, the stories, and the support we give one another that truly make a community strong.
Join us this August as we give back to the place we call home.
