HELPING raise awareness of the effects of fire, and recording local perspectives for posterity, have motivated Glenrowan resident Jan Osmotherly to produce a film documenting the Lake Rowan, Boweya and Bungeet fires last December. Jan put the film together as part of her ongoing work as a resilient communities project coordinator for Benalla Rural City Council, and said she learnt a lot from speaking to the various people from all walks of life who were affected by the fire. “What struck me were all the positives that came out of the disaster,” she said. “So many acts of kindness came out of it. “People just rallied around each other. “It just restores your faith in humanity.” In making the film, she has spent many hours meeting with local individuals and families, to find out their experiences. Jan said she felt privileged to be able to share their stories. “It was really quite a humbling experience,” she said. “People were really open, honest and emotional.” Jan said a key perspective to come out of the film is that while individuals can do as much fire preparation as possible, what happens in an emergency all depends on personal circumstances and experience. “Everyone’s story was different, everyone’s situation was different,” she said. Scoop Humphries, whose family property was badly burnt in the fires and whose pub at Thoona became a community hub during the emergency situation, praised the work done on the film by Jan. “She’s doing a great job,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing the whole thing. continued page |
