Smart and sustainable By KYLIE WILSON NESTLED in a quiet rural setting on the outskirts of Wangaratta, the home of Kylie and Steve Murphy and their family not only affords comfortable family living, but is sustainable and energy efficient. Long committed to living a sustainable lifestyle, the Murphys will be opening their home, completed only last year, for the nation’s annual Sustainable House Day on Sunday, September 11. Kylie said that for the family, who previously lived in Kilmore, the construction of the home was a personal endeavour. The land was purchased in 2011, and the family moved to the area in 2013 and lived together in the living quarters of the property’s shed while Ovens and King Builders Wangaratta constructed their home. Kylie said that the home was designed to be a long term family dwelling and last her and Steve long into retirement. “We wanted to be able to retire and enjoy this block,” she said, stressing that living in a sustainable and energy efficient manner was very important to her family. “We also wanted to avoid paying high energy bills unnecessarily, and knowing that we’re not blowing resources.” Kylie urged anyone interested in sustainable living to come and visit the home. “It’s really good for people to see the different ways you can do sustainable living,” she said. The home is orientated to make the most favourable use of sunlight at all times of year, with Steve having calculated the size and height of the windows to maximise sunlight while minimising glare.

Happy dads day

MEDICINE OF THE FUTURE: Nanobot technology will open up a host of new medical treatments for patients.

Mind-controlled drug dispensing DNA nanobots ISRAELI designed mind-controlled drug-dispensing DNA nanobots could be a key treatment for people suffering from schizophrenia, ADHD, and many other mental health issues. While currently being tested on cockroaches, the bots show impressive results, and could target the symptoms of a given disorder more effectively, and with far fewer side effects, than drugs absorbed directly into the bloodstream. They are constructed out of DNA and are built to respond to particular brain activity, opening their gates (which have a lock made from iron oxide nanoparticles) and releasing drugs when triggered by a particular pattern. Effectively this means a patient could be administered drug treatment before the onset of a violent schizophrenic episode. It could even be a great boon for the treatment of depression, and other difficult to treat mental illnesses.

Lounge Room Furniture

To work, the team at the Interdisciplinary Centre, in Herzliya, and Bar Ilan University, in Ramat Gan, envisage a miniaturised EEG device worn in the ear that can monitor brain activity and trigger the nanobots inside a person’s body when required. While I personally find the concept of DNA nanobots to be extremely exciting, and Israel has again demonstrated they are quite the powerhouse when it comes to scientific research and development, it’s also heartening to see this technology being harnessed to treat such conditions. Historically speaking, mental illness has often been overlooked or demonised, and it’s been wonderful to see the recent awareness campaigns for all manner of mental health issues. In conjunction with funded research such as this, we can certainly make serious headway in overcoming conditions that affect the lives of millions of people.

If he wants to laze about in the great outdoors, a hammock is the way to go. If you want to be more involved, how about helping dad in the garden. Mow the grass, pull or spray weeds or dig over the soil in preparation for the spring veggie patch. Help plant out the vegetable garden or seedlings for a summer display. Children love helping so get them involved as well. Make it a real family affair. THIS Sunday is Father’s Day. The idea of a special day to honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. The first official Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910 and the idea soon spread worldwide. But the idea of Father’s Day may have origins in pagan sun worship. Pagans see the sun as the father of the universe. Father’s Day in many countries is on the third Sunday of June, which is close to the June summer solstice. In Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September, the beginning of spring. And spring is a busy time for gardeners, so make dad’s day super special by giving him garden related gifts. Handmade or purchased, there are items to fit every budget, from seeds, seedlings and plants to gloves, hand tools, shovels, spades, rakes, hoes and hoses, pots and containers, garden ornaments and furniture. Make a garden hamper for dad by filling a bucket or container with an assortment of seeds, hand tools and gloves. No need to wrap this useful present. Garden books and magazines are great for inspiration so consider giving dad a book or

VETS CORNER

FEATURE STORY

from page |

Feeding rabbits RABBITS are an interesting animal in terms of their appetite and feeding requirements. Studies have shown that they have a sweet tooth and unfortunately this will lead them to preferentially eat foods that are not healthy for them over ones that are. In one study when presented with the choice of hay or a bowl of sugar, wild rabbits chose the sugar. As pet rabbit owners therefore we are responsible for providing them with the foods they require in the quantities they require them. The vast majority of a rabbit’s diet needs to be roughage. This can be grazing on grass or as is more often practical providing them with hay. Grass or pasture hay is recommended and lucerne hay should be avoided. Types of grass hay that are acceptable include timothy hay, wheaten hay or oaten hay. This hay should be

supplemented with fresh leafy greens and herbs to make up the other 20 per cent of the diet. A good rule of thumb is 1-2 packed cups of leafy greens per day per kilogram of bodyweight and 4 times as much of hay. Acceptable leafy greens include spinach, kale, broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, celery, endive, beetroot or carrot tops and dark leaved lettuce varieties. Herbs that can be used include parsley, coriander, dill, basil and mint. Apple and carrot should be used only as treats in very small amounts (1 tablespoon a day). One to two teaspoons of premium grade pellets (eg Oxbow brand) can be given also, but a full pellet diet is not healthy (not enough fibre). Many commercial rabbit feeds are unfortunately not properly nutritious for rabbits. Rabbits also like to chew on wood blocks that help to

maintain their dental health so a piece or two of untreated pine in their environment is helpful too. Things that need to be avoided include cereals, grains, nuts, corn, beans, peas, bread, sweets, sugar, breakfast cereal and chocolate. A properly balanced diet made up of 80 per cent hay or grass is essential to maintain the digestive health of the pet rabbit. Many problems that vets see rabbits for can be traced back to inappropriate feeding. Tim Craig BVSc, Warby St Vet Hospital

PETS CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Mia, a domestic mediumhair female cat who is white in colour and two years and 10 months old. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

FRESH FROM THE GARDEN: Kylie Murphy likes to grow fresh produce to help feed the family.

Entrance air locks, heat exchanges and ceiling fans help keep internal temperatures moderate, while the home’s other energy efficient features include double glazed windows, LED lighting, and water efficient appliances for toilets, showers, dishwashers and more. The rear of the home is the venue for the family’s extensive garden, which features fruit trees, water efficient wicking vegetable beds, a spacious chicken enclosure and water tanks. All household water is recycled, treated and used on the garden. More than 100 of Australia’s best environmentally sustainable homes will open their doors to the public on Sustainable House Day on September 11. The national event will give people a rare view of exceptional

homes designed, built or renovated with sustainability in mind and allow them to speak to and learn from homeowners. There are a range of Sustainable House Day locations available to visit in the North East, including places such as Wangaratta, Murmungee, Benalla, Myrtleford, Buffalo River and Wandiligong. Wangaratta’s Eco Living Centre, at the HP Barr Community Centre, will be open on the day to display sustainable retrofitted features and show short films highlighting local sustainability projects and initiatives. Visitors need to register online to gain access to Sustainable House Day addresses and receive event updates, and you can register and see home profiles and event details by searching the website at sustainablehouseday.com.

LOOKS GOOD: The Rose River was looking fantastic last Sunday. How it looks this weekend for trout opening will be determined by how much rainfall we receive this week.

All set for trout opening G’DAY everybody, it is great to be back on board writing my weekly fishing report after a few months off during the quietest time of the year on the fishing calendar in North East Victoria. The new trout season opens this Saturday morning and I can’t wait. On the weekend I went for a lengthy drive around the region to look at the streams to see how they are holding up. As I type this report, all of the creeks and rivers are high with quite good clarity. A couple of creeks are off-colour, but on the whole most of the streams are looking great. They are high, and wading will be

BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA

very difficult and quite dangerous in many areas. Early in spring I like using metallic bladed spinners such as Super Vibrax in silver and gold when targeting trout. Small minnows may work well also, provided there is not too much current. This weekend, anglers fishing with worms will have the best chance at catching a trout as there is still a lot of water flowing down the streams and the catchments are saturated. With more rainfall in the forecast for

SUDOKU HARD

this week leading up to trout opening the stream conditions could be a little bit hit and miss this weekend. Before I went on holidays I mentioned that I was working on developing a family friendly fishery here in Wangaratta, just like every other town has. I have a lot of positive news. Victorian Fisheries really like the idea and are keen to stock a waterway here in Wangaratta which I have chosen. I’m just awaiting some official support from the Rural City of Wangaratta and hopefully we will have a small stocked waterway in town for kids and people with mobility issues to access.

Ripple effects of chronic illness CHRONIC illness or long term struggles with health often go hand in hand with the emergence or exacerbation of moods such as anxiety and depression. These alternations in moods can arise from fear and anger that our body has “betrayed us. We are angry with our body, we are angry that our health care professionals “don’t listen, don’t care and haven’t cured us, we are angry at our family for not understanding what you are going through. We are fearful that we will lose our friendships, job and family as they will get sick of putting up with us. Then our fear turns into fear of the pain, cost and outcome of future tests to investigate what is going on. Fear turns into anxiety and worry about what could happen in the future and depression sets in when thoughts of the past occupy our mind. Imagine how much mental and physical energy you are expending weekly, daily, hourly on what could happen, what might happen, what if, if only, I wish I had of, and

WINE TALK

SNOW PLAY

Pizzini Wines

2016 Sauvignon Blanc Around $18 IT’S wonderful to hear the sound of birds chirping and bees buzzing again, heralding the end of a long winter and the start of a sunny spring. Everyone seems to lift and get a spring back in their step including the chooks, who have given up their extended strike and finally returned to work, laying some spectacularly golden eggs. I’m doing my bit for industrial relations by ensuring they’re supplied with top shelf seed mix and the sweetest grass in the paddock, while keeping an eye out for a strapping, bachelor rooster with love on his mind. But first things first and sunshine means that lighter food including scrumptious salads are making a comeback to the weekly menu. I’m starting with a Nicoise to make the most of those eggs and I’m serving it with Pizzini Sauvignon Blanc. It has the vibrant and

WITH ANITA McPHERSON herbaceous gooseberry fruit aroma I was looking for, as well as a pleasing zing of lemony citrus. The flavour is fresh and springy too and becoming a little more tropical, with guava, melon and more of that lemon tang. The grapes are grown in the King Valley where they obviously enjoy the sunny days and cool, breezy nights, a little like the rest of us. It’s delicious with the richness of the egg and olives, pieces of just-seared tuna and the jumble of glossy green beans slicked with dressing. An ideal way to shake off the winter blues and welcome the new season. Available from the cellar door in Whitfield or go to www.pizzini. com.au.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Hughes Implements, 1868 WANGARATTA’S first foundry began pouring metal on August 31, 1868. By the 1860s, farmers were opening up larger areas to wheat, and needed wider implements. They also needed stronger, more deeply penetrating implements to allow them to trench the land to plant out grapevines. Earth moving machines were also needed to make drains and ditches to control water runoff on their properties. Many of the implements used for all these purposes in the district came from the foundry and blacksmith shop of William Hughes of North Wangaratta.

If helping raise money for charity is your thing, Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board will be holding their annual Fancy Dress Fun Walk on Wednesday, September 7. The event, which this year has the theme “All Colours Olympic, sees people from all walks of life don their wackiest fancy dress to raise

money for Camp Quality. Over at Mt Buller, this Saturday will see the mountain host the ABOM Mogul Challenge, with mogul aficionados battling for a range of prizes. The Mt Buller community will also be hitting the slopes in school dresses on Wednesday September 7, in a bid to raise funds to help educate girls in Africa as part of Australian charity ‘One Girl’s’ annual ‘Do It In A Dress’ campaign, which calls on people all over the world to complete challenges in school dresses to raise awareness and much needed funds to educate girls across Africa. BUSINESS AND FINANCE

There’s room for optimism AS I write this week’s column, I wish to pause for a moment and congratulate Australia’s chef de mission Kitty Chiller on her performance over the last couple of weeks in Rio. I believe it was an exceptional achievement deserving of a gold medal. As we start to come out of what seems to have been the coldest and wettest winter in many years, I see some great positive signs for our agricultural industry in Asia and the Pacific. My reading during the week suggests that East Asian demand for Australia’s food and wine is set to put a smile back on the faces of many of our farmers. In the fickle business of farming, optimism is slowly returning. Incomes in Eastern Asia continue to rise, we have falling trade barriers and with our clean food reputation

By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT

kenclarke11@bigpond.com growing, there is increasing demand for red meat, wine and a wide range of other produce. Much of it is catering to the appetite of China’s emerging consumer class with broadening tastes for the food that is clean, green and above all safe to consume. In 2010, around one per cent of Australia’s exports went into China, but in 2015 that figure had risen to 11.5 per cent, even as the price of beef soared to a record A$19.16 a kilogram. And to think that we, living in

this great country of ours, complain about having to pay around $8.50 to $9 a kilo for a side of beef – with our producers claiming that price is too low anyway. Forecasters at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Science (ABARES) expect the value of total beef exports to top A$9 billion in 2015/2016. As recently as 2012, they were barely half of this figure. But beef is not the only product that is booming in Asia. Shipment of bottled wine to China grew more than 60 per cent last year and large winemaker Treasury Wine Estates has estimated that Asia will be its biggest single source of profits in 2017. The drought in California and soaring global demand for almond milk has Australian producers shelling their nuts as fast as they can.

Honey producers are saying the bees are not buzzing quickly enough as sales are growing by 30 per cent a year in Asia. Producers are starting to reap the benefits after a few bad years since prices peaked in 2011. There is certainly some sort of a protein boom in Asia. These figures are impressionable, but this could just be the beginning of something big. A vast new pool of middleincome earners is emerging in China and the rest of Asia. The US-based Brookings Institution estimates this Asian middle class will reach 1.7 billion by the end of the decade and will virtually double to three billion by 2030. It means that we have an enormous market where people can now afford more and better

food – particularly protein rich meat and dairy products. If the current growth in food consumption in China is sustained for the next 15 years, then world production of beef and poultry will need to increase by five per cent, lamb and mutton by 17 per cent, fish by 30 per cent and pork in excess of 40 per cent. So what are we waiting for I wonder? Has the agricultural industry been listening to the signs, with grapes, cherries and the citrus fruits, oranges and lemons all being subject to increased volumes of supply to Japan, South Korea and China. I see a great opportunity for our political and business leaders to build on what we have and ensure we are in a position to supply the clean fresh and safe commodities that Asia is crying out for.
