WHEN members of Wangaratta’s 33 Army Cadet Unit meet each Thursday, the sun is hanging low in the sky over the rounded roofs of Beersheba Barracks. On the ground, cadets are meticulously practising precision marching, later moving on to other staples of survival skills, map reading, radio communications, basic construction engineering and more. At the helm of the unit is Capt Liz (AAC) Rouse, whose long military career has included 40 years in the Army Reserve. Growing up the eldest of six children, Capt Rouse is a natural at helping nurture youth. She became an army cadet instructor in 2002, moving up to being a commanding officer seven years later and captain in 2013. Capt (AAC) Rouse said she gets a lot of satisfaction from being able to equip young people with life skills and put them on a path to self reliance and independence. “They become part of a team, and the team helps each other to achieve their aims,” she said. “It’s about giving them life skills. “I have seen them grow into delightful young men and women.” Capt Rouse said her many years working with the defence forces had helped shape the woman she is today. “It taught me that drive to stand up for what is right, and take responsibility for my actions,” she said, hopeful others will take her lead. The unit’s training officer, Lt (AAC) Paul Zuch, said that being a cadet is a “good stepping stone for work experience”. He said cadets number up to 50 young people from across the region, aged between 13-18. continued page |
