Small art, big impact By KYLIE WILSON SIMPLE things like the objects around her and the community inform the work of Kiewa Valley artist Susie Losch. Working from an old converted dairy at her Upper Gundowring home, Susie lets the textures help shape the finished piece. “It’s giving insignificant things a voice,” she said. Creative from a young age and having studied fine arts in the 1990s, Susie says it’s easy to draw inspiration from objects in her everyday life. “I begin to play, and ideas come from there,” she said. “I start a work, and then the story takes over itself. “I wait until the materials speak to me. “With wood, the shape, colour and texture are the impetus for collage type constructions. “It depends on what I have a lot of at the time.” Working with found objects is also a personal choice for Susie, who’s “inspired to live as self sufficient a life as possible”. “My work means not comsuming a lot of things, using what is available,” she said. Her piece in the Petite – Miniature Textiles Exhibition, currently at the Wangaratta Art Gallery, is entitled Teasel, and was put together using found objects, textiles and textile paraphernalia.

ANTI-SOCIAL CIRCLE: Is smartphone reliance having an adverse impact on our cognitive abilities?
Smart phones, dumb folks I MIGHT be the smartest person on the planet. Not only do I know that the tenth most populated city in Argentina is San Juan, I also know you can buy excellent coffee at the Bordeaux Cafe Restaurant located at Mitre 75 Oeste Capital. I also speak every language (even if my Latin is a little sketchy), and I could tell you what the number Pi is to a million places. In fact, I’m quite sure you could ask me just about any question and I could give you an answer. Yes, the depth and breadth of my knowledge is astoundly impressive. At least, it is while the electricity is on and I have internet access. But if you were to take my gadgets from me and give them to a child with even moderately developed literacy and comprehension skills I would look like a buffoon by comparison. So, here’s the real head scratcher. In our age of information, of ready internet access and smartphones for such a large swath of our population, have we become more knowledgeable, or less? On the one hand, our collective knowledge has skyrocketed over the past fifteen years, but on the other, our individual ‘crystallized intelligence’ - a term coined by psychologist Raymond Cattell used to describe knowledge we’ve retained - has begun to take a downward turn (at least in comparison to the pre-internet era). This is not terribly surprising. I’m mildly ashamed to admit, I still can’t tie a
windsor knot for a neck tie. Every time I’ve had to do it, I’ve googled it, watched a Youtube video, and spent the next hour muddling through it with varying levels of success. I share that embarrassing fact with you to illustrate a point. Once upon a time I’d have had no choice but to commit that knowledge to long term memory, but the internet - and a stranger’s willingness to impart their sage knowledge of windsor knots - meant that I didn’t have to. In defence of this terrible laziness, I submit that my long term memory has instead been filled with an abundance of wonderful facts and knowledge about the world that I personally find interesting and useful. Facts that I would probably never have been able to accumulate in my lifetime without the internet at my disposal. And I’m not alone. Much like our forebears during the Industrial Revolution, the internet revolution has afforded us the luxury of specialisation. This specialisation and dependence on technology does, of course, pose risks, but barring the collapse of first world civilisation as we know it, history shows us that those risks are ultimately worth the reward. So, are smartphones making us more knowledgeable , or less? The answer is - both. See? I told you I could answer any question.
The quince tree QUINCE, botanically known as Cydonia oblonga, is a hardy deciduous tree known for its amazing, crooked and gnarled branches, beautiful heartshaped dark green leaves, large pearlike fruit and stunning fragrance, both fresh and when cooking. Quince trees have been cultivated for thousands of years and ancient civilisations prized them for their taste and fragrance and their beautifully twisted appearance. Quinces originated from Persia, now Iran, and then spread throughout the Mediterranean. They belong to the Rosaceae family and are closely related to roses, apples, pears, plums, apricots and almonds. Thanks to the recent trend in gourmet eating and cooking shows, quince has again become popular. But unlike other related fruits, quince cannot be eaten raw as it is too tart, hard and unpalatable. It needs to be cooked, stewed, poached or slowly simmered for as long as possible, until the flesh changes to a stunning ruby red. It can be cooked with meat, or made into delicious pies, preserves and jellies. Quince trees can be planted now and during winter, with bare rooted stock available from nurseries and online suppliers.
WITH DEBBI GIBSON, HORTICULTURALIST
Choose a sheltered sunny spot with good draining soil. Prepare the planting hole by digging in some organic matter and compost prior to planting. Protect them from frosts, especially late winter and early spring, as it can harm fruit set. Harvesting occurs from March through to May. When the fruit turns from green to a shiny yellow, it is ripe. Leave the fruit on the tree for as long as possible, picking it before the first frost occurs. It’s ready to be picked when the fruit starts to drop from the tree. Most quince trees are self-fertile, but yields are increased by crosspollination from another quince variety. The most commonly grown quince variety in Australia is “Champion. “Smyrna is a traditional Turkish variety, while “French Angers is a smaller variety with a height and spread of only about two metres. Quinces are a charming ornamental tree for the garden with interesting features and the bonus of unusually shaped yellow fruits in autumn. Happy gardening.

FEATURE STORY

Accidental ingestion of medications AS we all know, dogs are often very curious and like children, tend to use their mouths to investigate rather than their eyes or paws. Unfortunately this often gets them into trouble when they eat something that they shouldn’t. This scavenging behaviour often happens outdoors, especially on off lead walks, but can also occur inside the house if we are not careful securing things. Of particular importance is securing any medication in the house, whether that is pet medication or human medication. Some medications have a very small safety margin and getting even three or four times as many tablets as usual can be a problem. Often dog medications are flavoured to make them more palatable and this can encourage overconsumption. Prompt treatment is important when a dog has eaten too much medication as tablets are inherently designed to dissolve and absorb rapidly and this is what we don’t want to happen.
Inducing vomiting is helpful in the early stages. Supportive care, antidotes if available, lavage of the stomach or binding agents such as activated charcoal may be necessary if large overdose has occurred or a long time has passed since the ingestion. Securing medications is obviously a much better method than trying to correct an overconsumption once it has occurred. Keeping medications in a high cupboard (preferably locked) is going to be the best protection for dogs and children. If you suspect or know your dog has accidentally ingested medication, it is important to contact your veterinarian immediately to discuss what needs to be done. Glandular fever
The BFG (PG) A GIRL named Sophie encounters the Big Friendly Giant who, despite his intimidating appearance, turns out to be a kindhearted soul who is considered an outcast by the other giants because he refuses to eat boys and girls.
GLANDULAR fever is a virus that often affects young adults. Initially someone with glandular fever will feel tired, have a sore throat, enlarged tonsils and probably lose their appetite. This virus is easily tested for on a blood test, and the most common advice is to stop and rest until you feel better. This is definitely important, but sometimes it can still take months of resting for an improvement to occur. Natural medicines are very effective at treating this kind of virus, and for the most part, the naturopath will work on a convalescent type approach, which is supportive to bed rest, but allows the body to respond faster and recover more fully. Naturopaths’ top 5 tips for glandular fever recovery: 1. Prescription of herbs and nutrients: these fight the virus, support the drainage of the glands and rebuild energy. YEP tea – yarrow, elder and peppermint is great for the symptoms and fever of glandular fever. 2. Increase foods to support the appetite: This is really important

Dodging the Devil by George Martindale ON August 21, 1914, George Martindale enlisted for the war in service of Australia, and as part of the 5th Battalion, served for over three years and witnessed some of the biggest and most catastrophic battles of World War 1. Dodging the Devil is the compilation of George’s letters from more than 10 years, including his photography from the war. Published by Hardie Grant
BY NORTH EAST NATURAL HEALTH CENTRE’S NATUROPATHS SOPHIE LORBACK AND BELINDA MCPHERSON (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY)
TIRED: Glandular fever has a big impact on your energy levels. because if you don’t eat enough you will be tired and you won’t have enough nutrients to allow the immune system to do its job effectively. Increase ginger, chicken soups, hot lemon and honey tea, spicy pumpkin soup and fresh juices with beetroot, carrot and celery as well as red meat stews. 3. Eliminate foods that compromise the immune system: sugar, fatty foods, caffeine and refined white carbohydrates all deplete the immune system and make recovery slow. It is important to avoid these foods until you are completely recovered.
4. Support the liver: Glandular fever is a virus that lies dormant in the liver and progresses to the throat when you are run down. To protect your liver from the virus, increase the above herbs, foods and nutrients. 5. Continue to rest even once you feel your energy returning and follow up with a stress management plan. The main reasons we see GF relapsing, is because someone has not managed their stress well or has hit the exercise too fast, too soon. We can work with you to devise a program that supports your exercise and lifestyle needs, at the right time.

Morrisons of Glenrowan
2016 Semillon Around $15
WITH ANITA McPHERSON achieve a carefully balanced acidity. It has a clean, gold tinged colour and a fresh and vibrant aroma, with hints of tropical fruit and fig. The flavour leans toward melon and pear and there is a racy and refreshing zing of lemony citrus which carries right through all the way to the finishing line. It would be great with shellfish, but we enjoyed it with parmesan crusted chicken which turned out to be an ideal match. What a shame sleep is not a sport; or I just might become a medal contender. BUSINESS AND FINANCE
Your investments and June 30 ONLY a couple of days until the end of the financial year and I trust you have done your homework to minimise your taxable income. But if you are looking at investing in the share-market, all is not lost as the next day is just like the day before. To be successful - and we all like to think that our investments will just go on a continuous upward trend - there is much more than just getting a parcel of shares. Share prices will fluctuate, whether it is caused by financial decisions made in overseas countries or bad decisions by the company board which can cause huge losses overnight. If you are looking at a portfolio then you need about 10 or so stocks and have to be prepared for two of these stocks to go down,
By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT
kenclarke11@bigpond.com five to go up or down pretty much in line with the market, with one stock going up 50 per cent, one going up 100 per cent and if you are good and a little bit lucky you will have a windfall on the other. All the performance will come from the top three stocks; the others will just be ancillary to the main performers. This is the reality of portfolio management and the most vital parts of the equation are at the top and bottom of that experience.
How to pick stocks that will prove to be goldmines and how to manage the things that will go wrong. Investing is not all about choosing the right stock to buy, but what you do after you have bought the stock is just as important. Some investors will tell you that the right post-purchase management system is vastly more important. They will even argue that by having the right post purchase system, you will be able to pretty much guarantee success whatever stock you buy. A portfolio and its annual return is not one investment, it is a collection of many and it’s best you view it that way, as a battle with every stock, not an average of all. Set some standards when you commence buying shares.
Don’t buy shares that are considered crap, the stocks with weak balance sheets, poor earning trends, low or falling return on equity, long term share price downtrends and bad management. There are many websites you can access that will provide the information for you, so source these out and compile a list of about 30 different stocks. You need to have constant vigilance and discipline. You will be required to react to some things and it is no good waiting until next week as you are too busy. Your portfolio needs to be watched every day and you are negligent if you don’t at least check every week, as you will need to cull those two or three stocks which are hurting the portfolio.
You cannot do that if you are not looking. You should be letting your profits run as all the performance will come from a small number of stocks and you have to let them have their head. It is well known that stocks the world is telling us are expensive just get upgraded and go up again. An interesting technique you may follow is to buy a holding gradually, if the price increases you buy some more, and more if it goes up again and if it doesn’t go up again, or starts going down then you sell down gradually as well as it falls. I have had a few enquiries about the full text of last week’s topic. If you would like a copy of Dr Kerwin’s paper please send me an email address and I will forward it to you.

Children & Hearing Protection
Protect What You Have! Diana Bienvenu, Wangaratta Audiology Services
Most of us now understand that noisy workplaces and noisy leisure activities often produce noise at levels which can damage hearing permanently when hearing protection is not used. Exposure to excessive levels of noise is cumulative, meaning that the damage increases with more exposure over time. So, what about hearing protection for children?
angaratta udiology
Helping Dad need not harm your kids hearing future
Children can be unintentionally exposed to excessive noise, sometimes doing the same activity as their parents. They should also be provided with hearing protection when needed. Earmuffs are a good solution for many activities. There are even smaller-sized earmuffs available for children in bright colours. It is great to see young children using hearing protection and this can make a useful gift to a young grandchild at any age. Did you know that you may well be an unintentional model of hearing protection use (or non-use) for children who see you doing something noisy? This clinic encourages the use of earmuffs (rather than the more discrete earplugs) for activities when the neighbour’s children may observe you – like mowing the lawn and using other garden tools. All guns, rifles and other firearms are loud enough to cause a hearing loss with a single shot. Recent research has demonstrated that there are permanent changes to the nerve cells which take the message from the ear to the brain, even with a single noise event. This research provides us with even more motivation to continue to promote hearing protection for young children.
