IT was in the early 1990s that Wangaratta’s Vic Solimo noticed he was constantly tired. He got even more worried when he started passing blood in the toilet, and was losing weight unexpectedly. “I was extremely tired, I didn’t feel like doing anything,” he said. “I was pretty crook.” After doctor and specialists vists he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in early 1992. “I was a bit relieved, because I thought I had bowel cancer,” Vic admitted. The diagnosis makes him one of 75,000 Australians that live with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) that include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. His experiences have helped him spot similar symptoms in his sons Adam, who has ulcerative colitis, and Mitchell, who also has Crohn’s disease. Adam was diagnosed after becoming very ill during a South Australian holiday, while Vic said he got Mitchell to the doctor when he noticed him exhibiting similar symptoms to what he had suffered. Vic said the three of them know what each is going through, and his own experiences have helped him pass on advice to his sons on keeping happy and healthy. For the most part, he can manage his condition by ensuring he eats a healthy diet and stays away from hot and spicy foods and those containing MSG. continued page |
