FROM families enjoying regular rides to school and work, to fun loving tourists freewheeling their way around the region’s various bike trails, cycling in the North East continues to grow and evolve. Among those helping develop the local cycling scene are members of the Wangaratta Cycling Reference Group Strategy (WBRG). The group has been operating in the area for around two years and has a vision of increasing cycling through creating a vibrant and dynamic cycling culture across the Rural City of Wangaratta. They aim to be a voice for the needs of the broader cycling community, share information and enhance local cycling opportunities. Among the group’s dedicated members are veteran cyclists Renata Lewis and John Myles, both of whom know the roads around Wangaratta and district like the backs of their hands. Renata, also a member of Wangaratta Out and About, can be seen cycling in and around Wangaratta as part of her daily routine. She chooses to use cycling as her main means of transport to benefit not only her health, but also the environment by reducing her carbon footprint. “I do it because I enjoy it and because I can,” she said. “It’s a very healthy activity.” Renata said cycling has become a more respected activity in the North East in recent years, and with many facilities much improved there are plenty of reasons for people of all ages to get into the pastime. She believes road safety has also improved, with most motorists taking more care around cyclists. continued page |
