AMPS are plugged in, instruments set up, and jovial banter flies around the room as band members of Boweya Blues Revival prepare for another rehearsal. But the minute they are counted in to a song, the tight knit group is all business, pumping out well honed, driving blues beats as Wendy McLay lays her vocals over the top. It is this approach to performance that has attracted many listeners to the band since it formed in 2013. For Wendy, who is leaving the band soon to focus on other commitments, this weekend’s performance at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, will be a bittersweet experience for her. “It’s the end of a two and half year ride for me – I have very mixed feelings,” she said. “I have loved performing at the (jazz) festival, and am so thankful we are given the opportunity to play to large audiences of music lovers.” A long time performer in bands and in theatre, Wendy said blues is a tricky genre to execute. “You have to find the sweet spot, the feeling of the song, and pour your heart into it if you really want to pull it off,” she said. The band has been influenced by Tedeschi Trucks, Etta James, BB King and Muddy Waters, and Wendy said her fellow musicians enjoy the camaraderie as much as the music. “We have a shared love of sarcasm and music,” she laughed. Guitarist Jason Underwood agreed. “We have a love of blues, and a love of playing it,” he said. Bass guitarist Martin Nichols, a long time fan of both blues music and the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, said he relished being able to perform at the festival. continued page |
