Threads of family By KYLIE WILSON EVEN toddling around her family home as a child, fascinated by the jumble of textures and shades in her mother Sharon’s fabric stash, Wangaratta’s Beth Hulley had an eye for bright and unusual textiles. Before she could sit at the family sewing machine, Beth was encouraged by her mother to pick her favourite fabric to be made into quilts for her bed, and she said she would always pick the boldest and brightest. Now, at the young age of 27, that passion for textiles has helped her cement her skills as a quilter and craft project designer. And while her mother passed away five years ago, Beth said her spirit inspires her with every project she tackles. “She is my motivation,” Beth said. “Craft was the one thing me and mum did together. “Growing up, I always had something crafty to do. “I draw a lot of inspiration from her work,” she added, noting that she leafs through her mother’s old project scrapbooks and notes to this day. Her career has led her in several different directions, from being a wedding photographer to a stint in the army, to designing and making individualised “scarf straps” for cameras and handbags. Nowadays she combines work as a store manager at Wangaratta Spotlight with prolific designing for the company’s national project magazine, Get Creative, as well as instore project sheets. Her projects cover a wide gamut of quilting and sewing.

Spring annuals SPRING is a fantastic time for gardens and gardeners. The soil is warming up, the chilly mornings are passing and the days are getting longer. The blossoms are in full bloom, bulbs are flourishing and the spring annuals are starting to flower. Annuals are a great way to fill gaps and add spring colour to your garden. Many have the extra bonus of self-seeding, constantly renewing and spreading throughout the garden each year. My garden is full of self-sown annual plants including the delightful white Chrysanthemum daisy and white Alyssum, both of which contrast brilliantly with the blue of the Forget me knots and the pink and purple shades of the Cornflowers. Nigella, sometimes called Love in a mist, is popping up throughout the garden with its delicate lacy leaves and bright blue flowers. The flowers are followed by attractive, balloon-shaped green seedpods with purple or bronze stripes. Elsewhere, the yellows and oranges of the Marigolds and Calendula and the forever rambling Nasturtiums bring a cheery glow to the garden contrasting with the bright green foliage. The orange Californian poppies are self-seeding readily standing nearly 40 cm tall. There is still time to sprinkle poppy seeds in the garden for a spring summer show.

Shortcut: To make this recipe even quicker: pan-fry the bacon until crispy and stir through store bought caramelized onion jam. Pour over cheese and bake as per recipe. It’s important to use a whole wheel of camembert or brie, rather than a wedge as it needs the rind to hold in the melted creamy interior.

Other colours including white are also available. Although classed as perennial, the Johnny jump up Violas, also known as Heartsease, make a splash with their cheery purple and yellow flowers. These self-seed each year and are scattered all through the gardens. The Sweet peas planted from seed back in March looked great climbing up the arch way, but the lambs have made a meal out of most of them so only a few will actually flower. Yet to be planted are the petunias and pansies. And the varieties keep increasing each year, making it harder to choose; they are all gorgeous. There are many other spring annuals to choose from including the low growing purple Lobelia, colourful Sweet William and scented Pinks with their zigzag-edged petals. Impatiens have brightly coloured foliage and flowers, while taller growing annuals include Hollyhocks and Foxgloves, Phlox, Stock and Cosmos. Happy gardening.

Does your pet have itchy ears? A DOG or cat who presents with itchy sore ears is one of the most common conditions we treat in the veterinary clinic. Inflammation of the ear, also known as otitis, can present in many different ways depending on what structures of the ear are affected. The ear is made up of three sections: the external ear, the middle ear and the internal ear. Most commonly the external ear is the part that becomes inflamed and itchy. Signs of inflammation in this area include: itchiness, painful ears, head shaking, and smelly ears which may have visible discharge. When the internal ear becomes inflamed, deafness and neurological signs may also occur. Inflammation of the ear can eventually lead to an ear infection, which predominantly are due to bacterial or fungal agents. You may notice that some dogs and cats get ear infections more often than others. That is because there are predisposing factors as well as primary causes for ear infections. Predisposing factors include: long hairy ears, dogs that swim, narrow ear canals. Causes of inflammation that lead to
infection includes: grass seeds, skin allergies and ear mites. All these factors can alone or in combination can produce an ear infection. Ear infections can be a very uncomfortable and stressful experience for your pet. So if you suspect that your dog or cat’s ears need attending too, a consult with your local veterinarian is recommended. At the clinic, a thorough assessment of the ear can take place. This may include careful examination of the ear with an otoscope and swabbing the ear for debris to further investigate infection. A treatment plan is then developed which may involve ear medications, or further procedures to clean and treat the ear at the clinic. Beth said her love for creating is such that even outside of her day job, she can often be found at home spending hours working on her latest quilt creation, or trying to rough out the latest design that has popped into her head. “It’s just relaxing,” she said. Her favourite colours to work with include shades of turquoise, blue and purple, and she hopes to one day complete a two sided piece with each side reflecting the colours of the landscape of trips she has made to Canada and the US. She finds her inspiration from a range of places - fabrics she sees to suggestions and conversations with
customers, or even other projects on sites such as Pinterest. Beth said she loved creating ideas for others to try, and that her workmates and family have both expressed pride in her work. Even though she is a young designer, she still has plenty of hopes and plans for her work in the future, including entering a piece in next year’s Stitched Up Textile Festival and even possibly publishing a book of her own projects. “Never say never,” she said of her future plans. One thing is for certain - the inspiration of family will never be far from her mind.

Catching trout in high, dirty streams GIVEN the current wet conditions, and the fact that not much has changed in the last week, I have decided to write a short feature article this week. Many anglers are turned off by high, dirty water when they go trout fishing. I personally love fishing in these conditions. The saturated ground and water run-off usually brings the worms from underground up to the surface, where they are often washed into the waterways. During such conditions trout will feed heavily on worms, and growth rates will be fast. So it’s a bit of a no-brainer that worms are fantastic bait in high and dirty water. When the water is really high, and finding a pocket of slow water is almost impossible, the trout will often sit up

tight against the bank. A small pocket of slower water the size of a football can be all that is required to keep the trout out of the current. In these conditions, fish as close to the bank as possible. As the water level drops, try fishing with your bait of worms anywhere in the stream where the water flow has slowed enough to allow your worms to sink to the bottom with the aid of a light sinker of some kind. Try and find deeper pockets of slower water.

I usually use the smallest sinker that I can get away with, which is usually either one or two split shot sinkers. Lure fisherman can still get results in high and dirty water, provided the water clarity is still reasonable. Try fishing with really bright coloured lures, almost fluorescent in colour. I have been having great success recently with a fluorescent yellow Zerek Minnow. A brightly coloured bladed spinner such as a rooster tail in “fire tiger” colour will work well also. When lure fishing in high water, I do pretty much exactly the same thing as I would in lower water levels, except I usually fish much more slowly and place a lot more casts into each pool in order to give the trout more opportunities to see the lure.

Season finished for another year THIS weekend sees not only the last of the AFL action for the year, but the official end to the snow season. Mt Buller will be hosting their official closing weekend with a “Grand Final� bash, with plenty of entertainment and activities to enjoy throughout the weekend. At Falls Creek, you can enjoy “The Big Dig� at the Top of Falls Express Chair. This event sees participants dig in the snow to find a wealth of hidden prizes, including 2017 Hero passes, day passes, a Nikon camera, and heaps of other gear and prizes. This event is free to participate. Fans of Falls Creek can also look forward to the upcoming Alpine Challenge this November, one of the most challenging mountain trail runs in Australia. Taking place on the weekend of November 26-28, the course takes runners on six major climbs with thousands of metres of ascent and descent, including Mt Feathertop,
Mt Hotham, Mt McKay, Spion Kopje, Mt Nelse, Mt Bogong and four river crossings. While Mt Hotham held its official closing weekend last weekend, there is also a treat for runners coming up with the Great Alpine Road Running Festival/ Dinner Plain Mile High Trail Run taking place at Dinner Plain on November 1920. WHILE it’s said that in the Spring, a young man’s mind turns to love, there are other young men who would rather be fishing. When trout season opens it’s time to head out and explore the region’s many pristine waterways in search of a promising pool, which can be tricky when our rivers are powering along like all get out. Those in the know have their spots and try to fish them before the tourists arrive, staying mum about the exact locations, which is fair enough when the spoils are so great. Having recently tucked in to a freshly caught brown trout, grilled and served with a glass of Ros Ritchie Wines Sauvignon Blanc, it confirmed how good a seasonal food and wine match can be. Ros Ritchie has a penchant for aromatic varietals and sources her fruit from specially selected vineyards around the region which are meticulously managed by the growers. the hills above the King Valley. It’s delightfully “alpine� fresh; fruity but also herbaceous, with aromas of guava and white blossom. Its crystal clean essence is a perfect match for the delicate trout flesh, served with buttered new potatoes. It could only have tasted better if I’d caught it myself. QUANTUM computers seem set to be the next stage in our technological evolution. Vastly superior to it’s digital cousin - the modern day PC - a quantum computer can theoretically perform one hundred million times faster than today’s commercially available computers. A five hundred qubit quantum computer could perform more calculations than there are atoms in the universe in a single step, and, in a split second, solve a problem so complex that it would take a modern PC millions of years to calculate. Which is figuratively and perhaps even literally astronomical. So, how does a quantum computer achieve such a feat? The answer lies, believe it or not, with a cat. A very unusual cat known as SchrĂśdinger’s Cat. What makes this cat so unusual is that it is both alive and dead simultaneously, and, as such, it exists in a state known as ‘superposition’ in the field of quantum mechanics. (Before I go on I should mention that the cat is purely analogous and doesn’t actually exist - alive or dead - I apologise if I alarmed any feline enthusiasts out there). In quantum physics, the term superposition describes the fact that

subatomic particles can exist in two opposite states simultaneously - both on and off, alive and dead, yin and yang, zero and one. Such a fact is both bizarre and baffling, and fly’s in the face of everything we can observe with the naked eye, yet it is true nonetheless. A modern day, non-quantum computer uses transistors to perform its operations. Each transistor can only exist in a single state at any given time - either on or off, zero or one. This is where binary computer language essentially derives from
- it’s describing the state of the physical transistors in the computer’s microprocessor, the binary digits, otherwise known as ‘bits’. A quantum computer, on the other hand, replaces the ‘bits’ with ‘qubits’, and instead of transistors, it uses electrons (or other subatomic particles like photons). And because such a computer operates on a quantum scale, it is able to take advantage of physical phenomenon such as superposition. Therefore, each qubit can be both zero and one at the same time which in turn allows the quantum
computer to operate much, much faster, to put it very mildly. A mere fifty qubit computer could outperform the top five hundred supercomputers put together, and any current supercomputer makes your home PC look like a children’s toy. To put this in perspective, the jump between transistor-based, binary computers and quantum computers could be roughly the jump between horse and buggy and interstellar spaceships. Wrong, D-Wave systems is the first manufacturer of quantum computers and there are currently four of it’s systems already in existence, the most famous of which is held by NASA, which is a 1,098 qubit model. The quantum cat is out of the bag, ladies and gentlemen, and it is both alive and dead, just as SchrÜdinger predicted. What this means for the future of technology - and civilisation as a whole - is anybody’s guess, but I, for one, am looking forward to finding out.
