A true best friend of the forest

A LOVE of nature from playing in the woods with her brother behind the family home in England's country town of Bristol before the war years has always stayed with Yackandandah's Eileen Collins and played a significant part in her life since then.

For more than 30 years since she retired from her teaching profession, Mrs Collins has dedicated her time as a volunteer and convener of 'Friends of Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park' gaining a vast amount of information and knowledge from identifying flora and fauna as well as working on conservation projects helping to place the park on both national and international agendas.

When Mrs Collins, who only recently moved to Yackandandah, came to Chiltern with her husband in 1969 to take up local teaching positions, she discovered the park's rich diversity of animals, birdlife and vegetation but says the catalyst for her work and research was her friendship with eminent botanist the late Jean Galbraith.

"Jean was my mentor and when I left Gippsland she said 'when you go to Chiltern you must catalogue the plants in the park'.

Hoof abscess in horses HOOF abscesses or more correctly, subsolar abscessation, is a common cause of sudden and pronounced lameness in the horse.

It can be caused directly by penetrating foreign objects, through migration of bacteria through fissures in the sole and hoof or through infection of a bruised sole.

Subsolar abscesses can occur in any horse but is more likely to occur in horses with chronic laminitis, white line disease (separation of sole-wall junction), subsolar bruising, under run heels and those that are subjected to environments with excessive moisture (muddy paddocks) or dryness.

Most cases present with an acute onset of typically severe lameness with some horses refusing to bear weight on the affected limb. Diagnosis is usually based on several clinical signs including increased heat and digital pulses of the affected hoof and positive sensitivity to hoof testers. Occasionally nerve blocks and radiographs are needed to confirm an abscess or rule out other causes of foot pain.

Treatment consists of establishing drainage through paring out the undermined sole with a hoof knife. To maintain drainage a poultice bandage is then applied to the foot. Once drainage is complete, the hoof will need to be kept dry and clean until a new layer of keratinized tissues covers the defect. Despite popular belief, antibiotics are seldom required if adequate drainage has been established. However a tetanus booster and anti-inflammatories are commonly administered.

When identified and treated appropriately, the majority of horses with hoof abscess have a very good prognosis with a drastic and rapid improvement in the signs of lameness. Occasionally deeper structures may be affected and more extensive treatment and surgery required – which is why it is important that a diagnosis is made early on in the course of a lame horse.

Good neighboring plants WITH more focus on health and well-being and knowing where your food is coming from, people are trying to make the most out of available space in their gardens.

‘Companion planting’ is a complex topic which requires a very good understanding of garden planning and design, soil type, learning your plants’ behaviour and growth while making appropriate choices for your gardens needs as they change with the seasons.

This can take many years of observation, patience and trial and error. So I’ll only outline a few of the basics.

Some plants will use their aroma to attract or repel insects. Tansy disguises the odour of tomatoes while lavender helps against borers in citrus trees.

Plants can act as stimulators to enhance the flavours of others. For example strawberries planted among borage.

Similarly sage, rosemary, cabbage and carrots also benefit each other when planted in the same bed.

Other herbs like valerian and lovage will act as ‘nurturers’ and bring up nutrients in the soil to help

improve plant health and recover from insect attack or disease. Beans planted with corn help restore the nitrogen that corn takes from the soil.

Sacrificial plants such as Mexican sage and nasturtiums will act as decoys to attract aphids away from susceptible plants.

Of course, there are many other herbs and annuals that are happy to be planted in amongst our veggies and fruit trees, which will use their flowers to attract bees and other beneficial insects.

Many veggies happily grow and benefit each other like tomatoes and asparagus.

Fruiting trees like citrus and feijoas happily coexist as do mulberry, grapes, loquat and pears.

Of course like everything some plants are mortal enemies. Beans and peas loathe the onion family. As do broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower which hate tomatoes and strawberries. Mint and parsley do not get on either. Spend time researching, observing and recording your findings.

This Day in History, 1870 The observations of the Rev WM Finn of Heidelberg on the North East had been published and were being read with great interest in the district.

The Rev Finn was particularly impressed with the countryside around Dockers Plains extending through to Tarrawingee.

Emotional eating: a lose of appetite and a pyjama day for the digestive system I SEE a lot of patients with low appetite.

They say things like “I just don’t feel hungry”, “I can go all day without eating and not realise until dinner”.

There are various reasons for low appetite. Often it is grief.

Grief about living with a debilitating chronic illness, grief from loss of a partner, grief about loss of control, grief about loneliness.

The other kind of appetite loss I see in patient’s stems from being too busy or stressed. A proposed upgrade to the park in 1996, by then known as Chiltern Regional Park, to National Park status to acknowledge its Box-Ironbark signiďŹ cance excluded the name Chiltern. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the biggest challenges for the group was a lengthy battle to include the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name,â&#x20AC;?

Mrs Collins said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jeff Kennett, the then Victorian Premier, intervened and the National Parks bill was amended and passed in the legislative assembly a year later as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Chiltern Box-Ironbark National Parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; which he officially opened a short time later. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many rewarding days were spent with a former ranger, the late John McDonald introducing school groups and visitors to the plants and animals that called the park home.â&#x20AC;?

A passionate project has been the Regent Honeyeater Recovery Project which goes back long before a recovery project started 11 years ago. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After being alerted to the plight of the endangered species in the early 1980s, I got involved, kept records and with my friend Scott Jessup undertook monthly surveys over ďŹ ve years,â&#x20AC;? she said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;This eventually led to a three and a half year project with my friend Neil Blair to create an online ďŹ&#x201A;ora of the park and its surrounds which we have recently completed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Neville Walsh, chief botanist at the Melbourne Herbarium, painstakingly veriďŹ ed all the difficult specimens for which we were most grateful.

A botanical highlight during her conservation work was the discovery of a delicate pea, Swainsona recta in 2001 which was thought to be extinct in Victoria. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Neville Walsh was delighted to conďŹ rm its identity,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seed were collected and since that time many of the plants have been planted in the park.â&#x20AC;?

In 1991 she was a driving force in rekindling â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Friends of Chilternâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with a later name change to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Friends of Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a

â&#x20AC;&#x153;This led to Toronga Zoo establishing a captive breeding program aimed at increasing the numbers in the wild. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Newly released birds were colour-banded and ďŹ tted with transmitters and volunteers then used tracking equipment to follow their progress.â&#x20AC;?

Alpine resorts in peak condition THINGS are busy across the snow resorts this week after more snowfalls over the last week.

At Mt Hotham the finals of the Australian New Zealand Cup: Boarder Cross and Skier Cross are on from Monday September 2 to Thursday, September 5 and follow on from the two earlier races in the season.

Athletes from across the globe will go head to head to battle for the overall 2019 Australia New Zealand Cup title.

The RAAF Games will conclude this Friday as the Australian Air Force's top athletes compete against each other over a week of both ski and snowboard events from Alpine to Freestyle.

At Falls Creek the Pendl Cup Night GS Race will held on Thursday night.

The event is in memory of Rudi Pendl an Austrian friend that embraced snow, dance, cooking and all of Falls Creek since his arrival in 1977.

In place of the usual last Night Show, the Pendl Cup will be honouring one of Falls Creek’s most loved residents who had a great impact on the Snowsports School and everyone who worked there.

Each spring Leukaemia Foundation supporters take part in a series of Light the Night walks, shining lanterns of hope to cure leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Falls Creek will again host its own Light the Night Ski on Saturday from 5pm to 7pm to shine hope and fund blood cancer research to improve treatments and find cures.

Join the Falls Creek community in a beautiful lantern lighting ceremony and Light the Night ski or snowboard down Wombat’s Ramble.

To raise funds for the cause, lanterns will be available for purchase in Slalom Plaza.

Visitors will then take their lantern up the Halley’s Comet chairlift to ski down Wombats Ramble in a brilliant show of solidarity to find a cure for this devastating disease.

Is teleportation possible?

IN recent years, big strides have been made in teleportation within the sphere of quantum physics and quantum computers.

These breakthroughs have sparked numerous excited questions about the idea of one day being able to teleport human beings from one place to another.

Unfortunately, if you believe that this kind of teleportation is likely to happen any time in the foreseeable future, you’ve been seriously misled.

“Quantum teleportation” is a real and potentially rather useful phenomenon, but it has essentially nothing to do with the transporters in, say, a TV series like Star Trek.

So let’s try to clear up some of the confusion.

In real life, teleportation uses quantum entanglement to transfer a physical state from one particle to another.

The idea is that if you already have two entangled particles, one in (let us say) Perth and the other in Wangaratta, you can use them to transmit information about a third particle.

Basically, scientists would scan the particle in Perth and then reconstruct an exact copy in Wangaratta using its quantum state information.

For scientists and engineers, that’s pretty cool.

Without teleportation, there would be no way to send a qubit (a unit of quantum information is analogous to a bit in a classical computer) from one place to another without physically moving the object that stores the qubit.

But with teleportation, a lot of exciting new technologies become possible: unbreakable quantum cryptography, per-

haps even quantum computer clusters and a large-scale “quantum Internet” someday.

However, these applications must work within some major physical limitations imposed by quantum mechanics, namely: You can never transmit information faster than light.

Teleportation requires a separate classical communications channel as well as a quantum channel.

You can’t use teleportation to transfer a physical object, you can only transfer information about the object.

So “beam me up, Scotty” wouldn’t work in real life.

You can’t copy quantum information using teleportation.

Once a particle has been scanned by the transmitter, it irrecoverably loses its quantum state.

The quantum channel is always destroyed - after teleportation occurs, the entangled particles used in the teleportation process are no longer entangled.

That means that if you want to transfer a large amount of information, you must have lots of entangled particles on each end of the channel.

Reconstructing a large object from quantum information alone is really hard.

(Yet another reason teleporting people will be impossible for the foreseeable future.)

In conclusion: don’t believe everything you read.

Quantum teleportation is an interesting and useful phenomenon, but it’s not Star Trek.

If you want to move a large object, you'll unfortunately need to employ good old elbow grease for the time being.
