career by KYLIE WILSON DENNIS O’Neill’s work takes him to some of the most remote locations on earth, but he and wife Jane Reynolds happily call Glenrowan home. Speaking on the eve of his latest consulting trip to Timor-Leste, the mineral consultant and director of Resource Futures Pty Ltd is passionate about his work. The Irish-born geologist, who emigrated to Australia with his family as a child, said he “absorbed my parents’ love of adventure and new frontiers”, and has “always had a love for the outdoors”. The O’Neill family first lived in Mt Beauty when they came to Australia, with Dennis’ father working for the State Electricity Commission, but he spent the majority of his formative years living in Morwell before studying chemistry at university and embarking on his career. His most current project sees him and a team of other related professionals study marble outcrop deposits in rural Timor-Leste, much of which has been unearthed due to seismic activity over hundreds, even thousands of years. The team will be working towards collecting samples of the marble and sending them for quality testing to a laboratory in Italy, as well as establishing marketplace demand.
