THEY brave snow, icy conditions, early mornings and late evenings to capture the perfect shot, from skiers in mid-air, to breathtaking alpine vistas. But it is all worth it for intrepid photographers like Charlie Brown and Jiri Cech, whose images capture alpine life in the North East every winter. Charlie, who has a familiar face at Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, and across the Kiewa Valley, was interested in photography from a very young age. “I grew up in Port Campbell surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Great Ocean Road and I was drawn to its grandeur and ever changing moods,” he said. “I think for me, photography was a natural progression, trying to capture and share those moods.” His passion for alpine photography, though did not take hold until his early 20s, when he started skiing regularly. “I was hooked right from the start…the mountains evoked the same feelings in me that I felt down the coast, such rawness and constantly changing,” said Charlie, who feels fortunate to have his career. “I’ve been very lucky to have spent the last 20 winters just photographing… the previous seasons I had to work in bars and restaurants to fund my skiing and photography habits,” he laughed. Charlie said combining work and play is a big part of the appeal when capturing images in the alpine region. “I’m able to ski whilst I work…I’ve developed a great bag/harness setup that I wear at the front, so I can ski anywhere whilst carrying all my camera gear and access it without having to take anything off,” he said. continued page |

GARDEN HINTS
Winter tasks in the garden WITH CHRIS FEBVRE, NEM CREATIVE DESIGNER
cfebvre@nemedia.com.au
POKE: What if reality isn’t real, and you are actually a Pokémon? I just used ‘Mind Bend’. It was super effective.
I choose you, but who chose me? CALL me crazy, but I’ve sometimes pondered the notion that we all exist in a giant computer game called ‘Life’ and that ‘we’ are merely characters being controlled by the ‘real’ players who actually exist. I like to imagine that the person who controls me is a middle-aged woman named Susan who - after a long day’s work at the office - unwinds by pouring herself a glass of wine, switches on her futuristic Playstation, and starts running around this simulated world as me. She levels me up, trains me in new skills, takes me to work to earn in-game currency, and spends that currency on socialising me or buying me new furniture in order to keep me in a happy mood. As the latest resurrected craze has taken hold, and children of all ages (though mostly older than eighteen, I’ve noticed) are spending hours madly running around all over the world catching and battling digital, simulated creatures called Pokémon, is it truly so absurd to think that we might be simulations ourselves? Or, to put it another way, what if we ‘are’ the Pokémon? Laugh if you will, but according to Elon Musk, CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla Motors, the statistical probability that we aren’t a computer simulation is one in billions. Mr Musk arrives at this conclusion by a logical extrapolation of advancements in computer science and video games.
Only a few decades ago, the penny-pinching arcade game known as ‘Pong’ was considered the most advanced video game on the market. “Now, 40 years later, we have photorealistic, 3D simulations with millions of people playing simultaneously... If you assume any rate of improvement at all then games will become indistinguishable from reality,” Musk said at Code Conference 2016. But if such a notion disturbs or depresses you, Mr Musk contends that there is a bright side. If we truly are an advanced computer simulation, it means our civilisation has survived the threat of extinction at least to the point where we are able to develop such technology. So as long as you grant that you don’t actually exist, you can rest assured that humanity won’t be wiped out by a meteor for at least a few more decades. I hope that reassures you. If it doesn’t, you could always try taking your mind off things by downloading and playing Pokémon Go. And as you run around the street with your phone, looking like a mad person as you try to catch those digital critters, you can ponder the concept that somewhere, out there, someone is probably trying to catch you too. After all, you gotta catch ‘em all, right?
EVEN though winter is a time of hibernation for many plants, there are still plenty of tasks to be done in the winter garden. The annual winter pruning of fruit trees, berries, vines and roses is on the list, but so too is the pruning of many spring and summer flowering perennial plants. Prune them now while they’re dormant, and they will come back stronger than ever. Semi woody perennials such as Salvia and Butterfly bush produce their flowers on new growth from the current season. Cut them back to just above ground level and they will produce strong new stems and blooms. Woody perennials like Buddleia, Hibiscus, Fuchsias and Abelia can all be cut back by up to half to encourage new growth. Don’t throw away the pruned wood as this can be used to prepare stem cuttings. Perennials like Shasta daisy, Easter daisy, Pokers, Salvia, Penstemon and Echinacea, should be divided every second winter to maintain vigour. Propagate new plants by lifting with a garden fork, then wash off the soil and split the root system into pieces. Pot up or plant straight away. Hedging plants including
WITH DEBBI GIBSON, HORTICULTURALIST
Buxus, Westringia, Viburnum, Murraya, Photinia, Lonicera and small-growing Lillipillies benefit from a winter prune. These plants look their best when pruned a little and often. Tip prune now and once a month to maintain their shape and encourage bushy new growth. Prune back Hydrangea stems that have flowered last year, cutting just above a double set of buds. Leave the stems that didn’t flower as they will produce this year’s flowers. Visit a nursery and check out the range of bare rooted plants available and choose some plants to add to your garden. Prepare the planting hole by adding plenty of organic matter. Start preparing the spring veggie patch by weeding and digging it over incorporating some dynamic lifter and compost. And finally, think ahead to summer and choose a range of summer flowering bulbs to plant. Make the most of the winter chill and warm yourself up by tackling some winter chores. You’ll be rewarded in spring. Happy gardening.

Vegetarian cats MANY people make the decision to live a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, whether based on morals, health or personal preference. As humans we are able to make educated decisions about living such a lifestyle and have the ability to ensure we meet our nutritional requirements such as eating alternate protein supplementation like tofu. Some pet owners have the desire to pass their nutritional preferences onto their pets which has the potential to be dangerous to the animal’s health. Cats have an essential requirement for taurine, an amino acid found in most animal tissues. This amino acid is used by cats daily and due to their inability to make this amino acid themselves they must receive it in their diet. Unfortunately taurine is not found in any plant matter making
it impossible for them to live a healthy vegetarian lifestyle. Cats deficient in taurine can show a number varying signs from irreversible blindness, reproductive problems or dilated cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure. Some pet owners enjoy cooking home cooked food for their dog or cat, which the pets love! It is important to ensure all their nutritional requirements are being met. By making sure they receive at the minimum a small portion daily of a well balanced commercial dog food (including raw diet like dog muesli) we are able to ensure they are not going to miss out on vitamins and minerals they need, helping them to live healthy lives. IN FULL FLIGHT: Skier Mitch Smith in action on Mt Hotham, captured by Charlie Brown.
“I love the high end action of snowsports photography. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with some very high end athletes in some amazing scenery. “I find the ever changing moods, light and conditions of the alps is really inspiring, it can change so quickly. “I still love to ski and get a real blast, just being in the mountains is very refreshing. Tawonga based photographer Jiri is equally passionate about capturing, as well as enjoying, the alpine environment. Growing up in the Czech Republic, he was accustomed to snowy winters, but he said Australian alpine environments have an individual beauty all their own. Working around Falls Creek and surrounding areas, he enjoys photographing snow events, summer sports like mountain biking, people, landscapes and more, and loves shooting documentary style pictures. “You have to love snow and you have to love skiing, he said of his work.
OUT AND ABOUT: Jiri Cech, a keen alpine photographer, is equally passionate about skiing and enjoying outdoor pursuits in the snow, including “fat biking (cycling in the snow on specially equipped mountain bikes).
“It’s good fun. He especially loves shooting at Falls Creek because “it’s so picturesque. Jiri said the friendly mountain communities in the North East also make his work a pleasure, adding that he preferred photographing people as well as adding an artistic flair to his images.

August 3-4 at Mt Hotham will also see the SBX Futures Camp, with a range of youngsters flocking to the camp to develop their technique and racing skills. While snow has been a little more sporadic at Mt Buffalo of late due to slightly warmer temperatures, the mountain remains a popular visitor destination and more snow is forecast. Good rainfalls mean the waterfalls at Mt Buffalo are looking spectacular, and are a highlight for visitors at the moment, although caution is advised when negotiating the wet walking tracks.

UNDER PRESSURE: Most people have a specific ‘stress holding pattern’.
How stress can cause physical symptoms
CD
A Version of Now by Peter Garrett THIS CD has a tone both stridently distinctive and unexpectedly tender, featuring songs of love, home and memories alongside songs of resistance, all while looking to the future.
STRESS is often associated with low mood or bad tempers and irritability, but stress can cause physical symptoms in many people too. Have you ever felt like your heart is beating too fast or had chest pain, only to discover that there is nothing wrong when you have a heart check up? Do you experience a bloated and queasy tummy, even though every gut test says you are fine? Are you constantly tired and feeling like your memory is somewhere else – maybe with the keys you have misplaced? Most people I talk to tend to have a specific ‘stress holding pattern’ which will dictate where their body chooses to store stress. Sometimes they don’t even know

they are stressed, they just feel a little ‘off balance’. An interesting point to consider, if you have experienced any of the above symptoms is that mood receptors are found in every organ of the body (with the majority being found in the gut). This is why some people experience stress in their tummy, others hold onto stress in their muscles and some of us like to lock it away in our chest. Stress can also down regulate our immune systems making us more prone to infections, cold, bugs and low energy when we are under pressure. Learning about your own stress pattern and creating a plan so you can identify it early can be a great way to deal with your ‘unusual symptoms’.

ONE of the latest additions to the free to air television line up is a channel which is providing access to food related programs around the clock. For anyone who enjoys food and wine it can be a great place to go for inspiration about cuisines of the world or to perk up the appetite before the next meal rolls around. It’s true there are an awful lot of food related game shows, but there are also many that dedicate themselves to American diners, burgers and barbecues. It’s driven me to experiment with rubs and marinades and to slow cook chunky animal parts over hot coals, and on the way discover that Souter’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a top match. The wine is handcrafted from 30 year old vines and has a dark, crimson colour and an inviting savoury aroma rising from the blackcurrant and cherry fruit. There’s also plenty of complexity

Big Brother in the guise of the Census I MUST say I was shocked when one night last week as I was going to rest there was a discussion on the radio about the Census on August 9. Yes, only a couple of weeks away. So, what is so different about this Census to the last one in 2011? Well for a start they are asking for your name in addition to your other details and they are going to keep these names on file for up to four years. Previously our answers were anonymous. The ABS got to find out where we lived, where we were born, who we worked for, what we were paid in wages and what religion we subscribed to (if any) but it didn’t get to keep our names. But in this year’s Census, it will be compulsory to provide our names. In reading the fact sheet available from the ABS website it says: “The ABS will retain names and addresses
By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT
kenclarke11@bigpond.com collected in the Census in order to enable a richer and more dynamic statistical picture of Australia, through the combination of Census data with other survey and administrative data. The ABS says names and addresses will be destroyed four years after collection, in August 2020 or earlier, once there is no longer any community benefit from their retention. In their fact sheet, they talk about privacy and confidentiality by saying they take privacy very seriously and ensure that your
confidentiality is protected. So do other government departments, but we continue to see things being leaked, like the provision by officers of addresses of vulnerable children in foster care in Victoria? In my opinion, there will always be a bad apple that will be able to hack into the data and provide it to unscrupulous characters for reward. I was interested in my reading that the Census and Statistics Act empowers it to direct people to provide “statistical information and requires it to “publish the results of these statistical collections. I for one don’t believe a name is a statistic, and I am sure there would be an outrage if the bureau actually published them. According to the ABS fact sheet, the Census helps Australians to understand who we are, where we live and how we are changing.
By covering a wide range of information, collected from the country as a whole, the Census provides the single most accurate snapshot of Australia. Census data is the foundation of population estimates of each state, territory and local government area. These are used to set electoral boundaries and for the distribution of government funds like GST revenue. And on Census night they are hoping that 65 per cent of Australians will go on-line and complete the Census – that’s 65 per cent of 23 million all trying to access the internet? Decimal currency and the millennium didn’t cause too many hassles, but I wonder what this will do? They believe that by offering you provision to lodge on-line it will save the taxpayers a cool $100 million.
I was interested in one commentator who believes the names could be used in links with what other authorities know about us “in the public good. There are a number of worthwhile linkages such as linking the Census to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to ascertain what drugs are being prescribed for persons in what occupations and what family circumstances. Just finally, if like me you are surprised the ABS are going to retain your name for four years and this is the first you have heard of it, they will tell you they had a press release issued on the Friday before Christmas with the title ABS response to Privacy Impact Assessment. Really, I thought this was the Friday when the politicians gave us the bad news, now we have the ABS doing the same. So good luck on August 9?
