joyful journey

by LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE GEMMA Gray leads an extremely colourful life.

The 18 year old GOTAFE student is currently studying a Certificate IV in Disability, has also auditioned for the Ned Kelly film, done photoshoots, played sport, and has even made it through some competition rounds on The Voice.

“I went on The Voice in 2013 for the kid’s competition and actually got to the round just before the televised blind auditions,” Gemma said.

“It was an incredible experience.”

This year, Gemma has been getting busy with various jobs and activities to work on herself.

“I asked a photographer friend to do a photoshoot with me in March, so I could gain some more body confidence because I was lacking in that aspect,” Gemma said.

“After seeing the result, I was so happy, and definitely gained some more body positivity.”

More recently, a family friend sent Gemma the audition form for the film ‘The True History of the Kelly Gang’ which is being filmed in Wangaratta.

Modern couples shun joint bank accounts YOUNG Australians are no longer feeling the love for shared bank accounts, according to a ME survey of 2000 transaction account holders.

Of those in married and de facto relationships, 71 per cent said they shared a joint account.

But this proportion fell with age to: ĆşÇ?54 per cent of Gen Z (18–24-year-olds) Ćş 68 per cent of Gen Y (25–39-year-olds) ĆşÇ?70 per cent of Gen X (40–54-year-olds) Ćş 76 per cent of Baby Boomers (55–74-year-olds) Of those who kept their ďŹ nances separate, over a third (36 per cent) said the primary driver was ďŹ nancial independence, closely followed by a desire for privacy (13 per cent) and a lack of trust in their partner’s spending habits (11 per cent).

The key events that triggered couples to open a joint account included: getting married (52 per cent), moving in together (19 per cent) and purchasing a home (17 per cent).

The pros for joint accounts The majority of married and de facto couples (72 per cent) said joint bank accounts build trust and a closer relationship.

A further 71 per cent said joint accounts are useful for managing dayto-day spending and 64 per cent said joint accounts make them accountable to sticking to a budget or plan.

The cons for joint accounts Slightly less than a third (30 per cent) of married and de facto couples said merging money could lead to arguments.

Of those that thought joint accounts could lead to arguments, nearly half (48 per cent) thought joint accounts could even cause a break-up or lead to divorce.

Furthermore, 38 per cent of married and de facto couples admitted to feeling ‘guilty’ when spending money from their joint account for their own purposes.

ME Money Expert Matthew Read said he’s not surprised younger Australians are less enamoured of joint accounts. “As with all things, younger generations tend to question what was once assumed and the traditional expectation that couples share accounts may be part of that questioning. “Australians are also getting married later and by the time they commit they’re set in their independent money habits. “Another reason for the shift may be related to the growing ďŹ nancial independence of women and their desire to have a bank account of their own and more control over their ďŹ nances.â€?

Read added: “there are practical beneďŹ ts that can come from sharing accounts, but paradoxically, having separate accounts and shared lives can force each individual in a relationship to talk more about money together and to share that responsibility.â€?

WINTER heralds the time when hakeas burst into bloom and give colour and beauty to the garden for the colder months.

Baron Christian Ludwig von Hake (1745-1818) was a German minister and a patron of botany and it is in his honor that the 149 Australian species of hakea have been named.

Many hakeas are hardy and reliable garden plants, and Hakea laurina is an international ďŹ rm favourite. In Europe and North America H. laurina is grown extensively. It is also a popular hedge plant.

H. laurina is one of several hakeas which have globular owers. It originates from the south-west of Western Australia.

H. laurina is a medium shrub with attractive willow-like grey-blue foliage with prominent veins. It produces a profusion of pink pincushion owers on mature wood from May till August. Flowers are followed by persistent, attractive woody fruits. It is aptly named the Pincushion Hakea.

As the buds open, the scaly white covering falls away to reveal tight creamy balls of dainty styles. As the ow-

ers mature, the colour strengthens from cream to coconut-ice pink, then to a deep cherry red.

There are various forms of H. laurina. The upright form is most readily obtainable.

There is also an attractive weeping form, and a registered cultivar “Stockdale Sensation� which grows to around three metres.

Hakeas can be successfully grown from seed.

Collect mature unopened mature seed capsules and store in a brown paper bag in a warm, dry place. The car dashboard is ideal.

The woody capsules spring open to reveal two winged seeds neatly cradled in each bi-colour woody capsule.

Plant the seeds in seed-raising mix and keep moist, but not wet. Be patient.

The seeds will germinate in their own time.

Prick out seedlings into pots when at the 2-leaf stage.

Hakea laurina will grow in most soils, and thrives in full sun.

Hakeas are shallow-rooted, so it is advisable to stake young plants to avoid damage from strong winds.

Grass tetany in cattle THIS wintery time of year is when we start to hear of cases of grass tetany, or hypomagnesaemia, in cattle.

Grass tetany is associated with low levels of magnesium in the blood and the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain.

The causes are complex, but grass tetany is most commonly seen in lactating cows on cold wet days when the cows don’t eat much and the grass is wet and lush.

Lactating cows are very sensitive to changes in the input-output balance of magnesium in their bodies because they have no readily available magnesium reserve, and must therefore consume the required amount daily.

Grazed pastures between April and September may not provide the amount of magnesium necessary for a lactating cow.

The first symptom of grass tetany is usually aggression with charging, bellowing and galloping.

This progresses to muscle tremors, incoordination (staggers), and then to convulsions followed by death. There may a small window of opportunity for emergency treatment in these cases, but the prognosis is poor once cattle be-

If not treated affected animals will die within hours.

Because it happens so quickly, sometimes the only thing observed will be a dead animal surrounded by scuffed up ground.

Treatment of grass tetany is by slow intravenous administration of magnesium and calcium, and sometimes also anticonvulsants.

If successful, this is then followed by oral magnesium supplementation.

Prevention of hypomagnesaemia is by feeding hay (especially legume hays) and by incorporating magnesium oxide (Causmag) into feed daily during the risk period (dusted onto pasture, given with feed, or as blocks), giving it as a drench, or as intraruminal bullets (it is best not to supplement magnesium through drinking water as it is unpalatable and intakes are unreliable).

Supplementation should start at least 2-3 weeks prior to calving to allow the digestive system time to adjust.

Gemma’s joyful journey Ŷ From page 1 “I did drama throughout primary school and early high school and I’ve always enjoyed playing different characters and putting myself out there,” Gemma said.

Despite all these different aspects of her life, Gemma is not always up to taking things on.

For 12 years she has been suffering with Fibromyalgia Syndrome and chronic fatigue, but only put a name to the chronic illness a few years ago.

“Pretty much all my life we went to doctors who had no idea what was wrong, just that there was something wrong,” she said.

“Finally we went to a rheumatologist who told us it was Fibromyalgia Syndrome, which explains my chronic fatigue and other symptoms.

“There were days at school where I couldn’t hold a pen much longer because of the pain and fatigue, and eventually I had a year off in year 11 to work on my health.

“After that I went into the work force and have now worked over eight jobs including working in CSSD at the hospital for a school based apprenticeship, volunteering with interchange at UMFC for three years looking after kids with disabilities, and between Subway, McDonalds and now Big W, I was sometimes working two jobs a day.

“The symptoms are there on a daily basis but I pretend it’s not hap-

pening and do things out of my comfort zone, like leadership camps, studying and other things to keep myself going.

“In the morning I go to the gym, and if I don’t make it there I’ll go for a run before work.

“On bad days I’ll rest at home but try to keep myself moving if possible.

“I haven’t met many other people with the syndrome, but I saw a documentary about Lady Gaga who also has it and that was really cool to watch.”

Gemma continually posts about her struggle on social media, and she said this is a way to keep people updated and aware.

“Social media helps me raise awareness to friends and family, I could be looking perfectly fine but end up in hospital the same day, but they couldn’t see the symptoms,” she said.

“People have told me to get a disability pension but I’m so capable of so many things, I don’t need one.

“I always tell myself to keep my mind focused on something else.

“My motto is ‘observation plus action equals results’, so I observe something throughout the day, focus on that and create an action and you’ll get a result, it distracts the mind.

“There’s no cure but there are strategies to keep your mind off it.”

Gemma’s aspirations for her future include motivational speaking,

which was further inspired after attending the Rotary-led leadership camp RYLA. “I learnt so many positive things about myself at that camp and the motivational speakers opened my eyes to what I could do,” she said.

“I’ve always wanted to be a motivational speaker and speak about daily life things, having lost members of family and friends to suicide and cancer.

“I’m not much of a speaker but when I get out there it’s amazing what comes out of my mouth.”

One of Gemma’s greatest achievements to date would be her determined and successful creation of the girls football team the Alpine Lions in Whorouly.

“I created Whorouly’s girls football, the Alpine Lions after the Maggie’s girl’s football team was unable to continue and we were left with no team to play with.

“I contacted the AFL to get onto grounds, coaches, umpires because we had the numbers, we just needed a club, which we got and we played clubs at Lavington, the Wodonga raiders and teams in Wahgunyah, Corowa, and Rutherglen.”

Gemma likes to think she’s made the most of her youth here in Wangaratta, and the young woman is such a strong example of someone finding the positives in a not-so-positive situation.

The naturopathic approach to boosting your iron intake IF you are dragging your body around, breathless with simple exercise, have brittle hair and nails, pale complexion and poor memory, you may have iron deďŹ ciency. A common blood iron test is the best way to decide if your body has enough iron.

Many people ďŹ nd out they are iron deďŹ cient when they go to the blood bank to donate blood and are not allowed to because their iron levels are too low.

Often the symptoms of fatigue or breathlessness, heavy menstrual bleeding or frequent infections will alert the practitioner to authorise a simple pathology test to check iron levels.

Correcting iron levels can have a profound effect on how energetic a person feels both mentally and physically.

When getting iron through your

daily diet, the best sources are easily digestible red meat, shellďŹ sh such as mussels and oysters, dark leafy green vegetables and salads.

This is usually enough for a healthy person to meet the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs.

If the body has been less than well with illness, infection, heavy menstrual bleeding, dieting, increased stress demands, old age, poor digestion, vegetarians, children with numerous infections, heavy exercise demands or prolonged fatigue, the food sources of iron may not be enough to meet the need of the body.

Over the counter iron supplements are a big trap for customers who are iron deďŹ cient. Products marketed as iron supplements often have only 5mg of iron which is well under the amount needed to correct a deďŹ ciency.

At our clinic we use anywhere from 75 to 150mg iron depending on how deďŹ cient a patient may be.

We often prescribed this in combination with iron and blood building herbs such as nettle, withania, burdock, raspberry leaf, astragalus and spend a lot of time talking to you about how to increase absorption of iron through increasing iron rich foods and removing foods which impact on iron absorption, or at least having these away from iron therapy.

Always the iron levels are reassessed within six weeks to three months on a supplement.

There are iron supplements that constipate (often the ferrous sulphate types) which we try to avoid.

The amino acid protein bound iron is much gentler on the stomach and very well absorbed.

La Cantina King Valley 2015 Sangiovese WHEN the weather finally turns cold, it heralds the start of salami season in the region, where family and friends come together on mass to create their signature spicy sausages.

Many of our specialty stores and butchers showcase gleaming knives, shiny sausage filling machines and magic flavouring mixes, while those in the know argue over the best cuts of pork and casings.

It’s wonderful to see the different ways people tackle this process and I like that the resulting product can be soft, firm, mild or spicy, with the odd shapes, sizes and imperfections indicative of a truly homemade product.

I recently got to sample a firm and chewy salami from one family’s 2017 batch alongside some home cured olives and it was the

THIS DAY IN HISTORY 1880 JUNE 27, 1880 was the second day of the Glenrowan Siege, with Aaron Sherritt dead, many of Glenrowan’s law abiding population, held hostage, and the gang assuming police would be sent for that they could ambush.

As the day wore on and no police appeared, the atmosphere at Ann Jones’ Inn relaxed, but police forces were still mobilising themselves for combat and a train with police left Melbourne for Glenrowan late that evening.

Method: In a medium saucepan, whisk together yolks and sugar. Add lemon juice and passionfruit pulp and stir to combine.

Place pan over medium-low heat and cook for approximately 10 minutes, stirring regularly, until thickened.

Remove pan from heat, add butter and stir until melted and fully incorporated.

Pour into a 250ml sterilised jar, seal and set aside to cool.

Store in fridge for up to two weeks.

Flexible work the new normal

OFFERING ďŹ&#x201A;exible working arrangements is tipped to be a key part of the unfolding fourth industrial revolution, where emerging technologies are reshaping our industries and how we work.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s according to a survey by recruiting experts Hays of 1253 professionals and 951 employers.

A massive 89 per cent of employers said ďŹ&#x201A;exible working options are very important or important when it comes to staff attraction and retention.

Of the professionals surveyed, 33 per cent said ďŹ&#x201A;exible working options were critical to their remaining in employment.

A further 63 per cent said they were â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;nice to haveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Just four per cent said ďŹ&#x201A;exible work was not important to them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A third of professionals identifying ďŹ&#x201A;exible work as critical to remaining employed is signiďŹ cant and we predict this ďŹ gure will only grow as our cities become more congested and the proportion of younger workers increases,â&#x20AC;? says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia & New Zealand. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are many reasons why people may require ďŹ&#x201A;exible working options, including living further from CBDs to access affordable housing, balancing ongoing caring responsibilities, ramping back up after parental leave or throttling back from full time work toward retirement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The emerging technologies of the

The importance of understanding the scientific method TAKE a look at your surroundings.

Chances are, your field of view is littered with the products of science.

From the buildings you see, the mode of transport you use, the clothes you’re wearing, the tools you use, the gadgets you enjoy, right down to the food and beverages you consume - science has played some pivotal role in their creation and refinement.

But what, exactly, is science?

How do scientists conduct research and experiments?

There’s quite a lot of misinformation out there about the scientific method, and I hope to clear up a few of these misunderstandings.

The six steps of the scientific method When conducting research, scientists use the scientific method to collect measurable, empirical evidence in an experiment related to a hypothesis (often in the form of an if/then statement), the results of

which aim to support or contradict that hypothesis.

The six steps are outlined as follows: 1) Make an observation or observations.

2) Ask questions about the observations and gather information.

3) Form a hypothesis — a tentative description of what’s been observed, and make predictions based on that hypothesis.

4) Test the hypothesis and predictions in an experiment that can be reproduced.

5) Analyze the data and draw conclusions; accept or reject the hypothesis or modify the hypothesis if necessary.

6) Reproduce the experiment until there are no discrepancies between observations and theory.

If the experiment is reproduced continuously with no discrepancies or contradictions, the hypothesis (perhaps along with other related hypotheses), could go on to form the basis of a scientific theory.

Deduction and induction People have two primary modes of reasoning, known as deductive and inductive reasoning, and scientists use both of these modes when conducting research.

Deductive reasoning uses information already available (premises) to infer a conclusion.

Take this syllogism as an example: Premise 1: All apples are fruit Premise 2: A Granny Smith is an apple Conclusion: Therefore, a Granny Smith is a fruit.

This deductive form of reasoning is also how the sudoku puzzle on page four works, as well.

Inductive reasoning, on the other hand, goes beyond the information contained in what we already know, and extrapolates that knowledge into new areas.

We induce using generalisations and analogies.

Generalisations include observing regularities in nature and imagining they are uniform everywhere

Generalisations also create classes of things, such as “mammals” or “reptiles”.

Analogies make claims of similarities between two things, and draw conclusions based on these analogous traits.

For example, a paleontologist might find the fossilized remains of an extinct animal that has sharp teeth.

They observe that animals alive today with sharp teeth are carnivorous, and, using this analogy, they induce that the extinct animal was a carnivore.

Using induction and inference to arrive at the best possible explanation consistent with the evidence, science teaches us more about the world than we could simply deduce.

Which brings us to…

‘It’s just a theory, it hasn’t been proven’.

When someone invokes this phrase to cast doubt upon the va-

lidity of a body of scientific work, it’s often persuasive to those who don’t understand how scientific theories are formed.

To the layman, a theory might sound like a wild guess, based on little to no evidence, but this simply isn’t true.

In a nutshell, a ‘scientific theory’ is an explanation of an aspect of the natural world, based upon a body of facts that have been rigorously tested through reproducible experimentation.

It is the best available, cohesive explanation for that body of facts.

And while it’s true that scientific theories aren’t proven, here’s the real kicker - nothing in science is ever truly proven.

Not with 100 percent certainty.

Additionally, while we all focus on the new discoveries of science, the biggest role scientists play in advancing our understanding of the world is to disprove hypotheses and theories, not prove them.

That’s the true genius of science.
