A PASSION for history as a youngster has led Cameron Auty on an incredible journey from his studies, working in overseas museums, handling some of the world’s most treasured artefacts to being appointed as the manager of the Burke Museum and cultural heritage at Indigo Shire Council four years ago.

With a grandfather who had a degree in history it’s not surprising that Cameron grew up with a love of the subject where he immersed himself in books and history movies.

“My grandfather had a huge library of history books and every time I visited he would give me a box of them to take home to read which I really enjoyed,” he said.

Cameron’s career took off after undertaking a postgraduate degree in museum studies at Deakin University following a degree in history at Melbourne University.

While at Deakin, he travelled to Vieng Xai, the headquarters of the Laos communist party during the Vietnam War where an entire underground city had been built.

“I went there in 2006 with a Deakin cultural heritage group and helped set it up as a museum and it had been the first time that visitors or tourists had been there,” he said.

Cameron’s career since then has taken in volunteering at the Victoria Police Museum and working at Museums Victoria, National Gallery of Scotland, and the Tate Gallery - Britain’s leading museum of modern and contemporary art.

Working in collections and logistics at Museums Victoria, he looked after a warehouse of extraordinary artefacts such as dinosaur replicas, media arts, old cars and anything in between that can be imagined.

Lower urinary tract disease in cats MISTY the cat started urinating in odd locations: first the back door mat, then in the empty bath.

She seemed uncomfortable, and the following day there was even a few spots of blood in the puddle she made on the bathroom tiles. Her owner thought she may have a bladder infection and brought her in to see us at the clinic.

After examining Misty and testing a sample of her urine we found no infection, but the lining of her bladder was inflamed and irritated.

Misty was treated with medication for the discomfort and recovered within a couple of days.

We also changed her diet so that she is less likely to suffer from repeat episodes.

Inflammation of the bladder is quite common in cats.

Unlike in dogs, bladder problems in cats are not usually caused by infection.

We don’t completely understand the underlying cause, but it does seem to be linked with stress, and is more common in indoor and overweight cats.

Sometimes bladder crystals or stones

can be involved, but not always.

In female cats episodes of bladder inflammation are usually self limiting, generally lasting a few days at a time, although they often recur.

In male cats however, bladder inflammation can result in their narrower urethra becoming blocked so that they can’t urinate at all.

This can quickly become life threatening, so difficulty urinating in male cats should always be considered an emergency.

If this occurs your cat should be taken to a vet immediately.

Signs that your cat may have a bladder problem include: • Urinating small amounts, more frequently.

•Urinating in odd locations.

• Straining or crying out when urinating.

• Trying to urinate but being unable to.

• Blood in urine.

• Licking at back end.

If you notice any of these symptoms, please call your vet, as there are a number of things we can do to help your cat.

Gumnuts for the autumn season LEAVES are falling, the days are drawing in. Fruits are ripening and seeds are maturing.

Conspicuous among our garden trees are the large urn-shaped nuts of Corymbia ficifolia.

The name change from Eucalyptus came about in 1995 when a new genus “Corymbia” came into being and 113 species were transferred from the Eucalyptus genus to Corymbia.

Eucalyptus ficifolia became Corymbia ficifolia - from Greek korumbos - a cluster and Latin corymbia - floral clusters. Ficifolia is derived from Latin ficus - a fig, and folia - leaves.

The leaves resemble native fig leaves.

In summer this tree was ablaze with orange fluffy flowers.

The gentle buzz of a million bees as they mined the flowers for nectar and pollen filled the air.

Now the flowers have faded; the bees have moved on, and nuts in drooping clusters cover the tree.

There will be plenty of seed. This particular tree was labelled: “Corymbia ficifolia, Grafted Flowering Gum “Baby Orange”.

This form was selected for its bright orange flowers and compact size.”

I’m keen to collect the seed and grow another generation, with a caveat: seed may not produce offspring which are the same as the parent.

Flowers could turn out white, pink, orange or red, and the eventual tree size may be taller than the parent tree.

Genetic diversity is a strategy for survival for all living things.

Plant breeders have selected particular forms which are most desirable for gardens or amenity plantings, and these are cloned by grafting scions (a piece of stem) of the mother plant onto compatible rootstocks.

Being certain about the flower colour and eventual size of a tree may be important in landscape de-

sign but not always.

Growing trees from seed can be fun, but for species with genetic diversity such as C. ficifolia it is akin to a lottery. If you are not bothered by the eventual size or flower colour, C. ficifolia will grow readily from seed.

The seeds are mature when the capsules are hard and turning brown.

Collect mature gumnuts while the valves at the bottom of the large urn-shaped ‘cup’ are still closed.

Place the gumnuts in a dry, warm place, and the valves will open over a couple of weeks to expel the seeds.

Sow the seeds thinly into a seed-raising mix in a pot or tray and cover lightly.

Water well, keep the soil moist but not wet.

When the seedlings are at the two-leaf stage they can be pricked out into forestry tubes or small pots and grown on until they are ready for planting out when well-established.

CAMPERS were out in force over Easter making the most of perfect weather conditions for walking, cycling, fishing and sitting around the campfire.

There was brilliant sunshine during the day and it was even warm enough for the courageous to dip a toe into the King River before retiring back to camp before the cool of night set in.

This Day in History, 1919 THE Welcome Home celebrations in Wangaratta took on a more sombre note on April 27, 1919, a day given over to special church services.

Not all the soldiers had returned home.

Some were being held in quarantine, due to the influenza epidemic.

Others were still overseas, waiting for a call to join a troop ship home.

The arches across Wangaratta streets had been so popular with locals and visitors alike that it was decided to keep them in position until peace officially broke out, which occurred in June 1919.

Let’s stop the flu in 2022 INFLUENZA, or the flu, is a virus that can be spread very easily.

It has the potential to cause illness or even deaths.

Most flu viruses are spread through droplets from an infected person sneeze or cough.

Infected people are potentially contagious even before feeling ill.

There is concern this flu season will be worse as lockdowns and COVID have ensured we have not been exposed to the flu virus as much as in previous years.

The lack of socialisation and face-toface activity ensured there was a lower chance of experiencing the flu which also resulted in a lower uptake of the vaccine.

Experts believe there will be more cases of the flu in 2022.

The influenza vaccine is made from a killed flu virus which allows the body to create an immune response after vaccination.

It cannot give you the flu which can only happen after exposure to a live virus.

Common symptoms of influenza include high temperature, coughing, body aching, lethargy, headaches, sore

throat, and a runny nose.

These symptoms are often worse, and can be more serious, in certain groups of people.

Those who are pregnant, immunocompromised, older, babies, or have certain chronic disease (heart, lung or kidney illnesses) are at greater risk, however there is a chance that even healthy people can become very sick with this virus.

It is recommended that anyone over the age of six months receive a flu vaccine to prevent or reduce the symptoms of the influenza virus, even if you have had the vaccine in previous years.

If a child under nine years is receiving the flu vaccine for the first time, they will need to get the vaccination twice with a minimum interval of a month.

The flu vaccine is free under the National Immunisation Program to those who are more vulnerable to the effects of influenza, such as: *Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy; *Those over 65 years of age; *Those over six months, but under five years;

*Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders over the age of six months; *Anyone over the age of six months with certain chronic medical conditions.

If paying privately, the influenza vaccine will cost around $25 depending on provider.

For those that haven’t received their booster or other COVID vaccination doses, there is no longer any gap required between the COVID and flu vaccines.

This means that if you are due for both the flu vaccine and COVID vaccine you can receive them on the same day.

The peak in influenza cases is generally seen between June to September.

To be best protected during this time, it is recommended that you obtain your flu vaccine from the middle of April onwards.

Even if you miss this window, it is still recommended that you receive a flu vaccine as soon as possible as influenza can potentially occur anytime throughout the year.

So get the influenza vaccine today and together we can stop the flu in 2022.

“We would take them to exhibitions, set them up where we gained a lot of hands on experience,” Cameron said.

“I worked on some amazing travelling international exhibitions as well, among them artefacts from the Great Wall of China, Titanic and Pompeii.”

Storage and collections work continued when working at the National Gallery of Scotland where Cameron travelled with valuable paintings to protect them which included a trip to Spain and Australia.

“I also escorted a painting of Napoleon Bonaparte’s mother to Melbourne and back which was fun but a bit high pressure too,” he said.

As someone who grew up in the 1980s a Star Wars exhibition at Melbourne’s Scienceworks has special memories for the

Burke Museum manager as well.

“We had all of the original movie models, prop costumes and everything that was used in the Star Wars movies in the 70s and 80s and for me it was like a dream come true.”

“The joy of the job is getting to work with real artefacts and caring for them is such a powerful experience.”

Upon returning to Australia, Cameron worked with the Australian Museums and Galleries Association on its Victorian collections program for digital cataloguing.

Travelling around the state for four years, he helped train communities to look after their collections and digitise them.

“I worked with many museums with their staff and volunteers supporting community history and local cultural heritage projects and to help them share

knowledge and professionalise their activities,” he said.

One of Cameron’s biggest goals is collections digitisation where all artefacts are photographed and scanned to be shared online with the public and the world.

“It’s something I’m really passionate about to ensure cultural and community history is preserved if there is a natural disaster or war,” he said.

“The more we record the collections, the more we can share and have a backup of our heritage. With the Burke Museum we have more than 30,000 artefacts so we have a lot of work to do.”

He was also the secretary of the national branch of Blue Shield Australia - the cultural equivalent of the Red Cross, which works to protect international cultural heritage threatened by war and natural disaster.

“It’s a tough industry for a career with not many positions and a lot of graduates have studied for a long time and find it hard to get a foot in door,” he said.

Cameron says working at the Beechworth Museum for the last four years has been an amazing part of his career.

He is proud of changes that have been made to the historic precinct under his watch as well as the development of a master plan with great

ideas for the future.

Helping volunteers as well as aspiring museum professionals with their careers is also important to the manager.

“It’s wonderful to be able help someone take on a new task or role,” he said.

“I’m also proud of our staff and volunteers who have won state museum awards that have recognised their hard work, such as last year’s AMaGA cataloguing collections for online community access.”

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA ◆ KING BROWN: This brown trout was caught on worms over the weekend in a tiny trickle of water the feeds the King River.

The trout are on the bite... for now!

PRETTY much any trout stream that you know holds trout is worth fishing at the moment as the water really starts to cool down and the trout start becoming more aggressive as they prepare to spawn.

Spawning varies from stream to stream, but usually late May is when the brown trout start to spawn in many North East Victorian waterways.

Right now, in the build-up to the spawn, it can be a fantastic time to go trout fishing as many of the trout that live in the ‘hard to get to’ places will be making their way upstream to spawn, passing through popular

camping and access areas.

Areas that see huge amounts of fishing pressure all spring and summer may fish exceptionally well now.

The entire dynamics of the streams change at this time of the year.

Last week I caught a heap of trout in a tributary of the Buffalo River on a black Strike Tiger Leech soft plastic.

One fish measured 48cm long.

Yesterday I fished a tiny trickle of water that feeds the King River and caught quite a few trout on worms.

The more popular rivers such as the Upper Ovens River above Porepunkah, the Buckland, Buffalo, Kiewa and Mitta

Education

Mitta rivers are all worth fishing for trout at the moment, and so too are the many small tributaries that feed them.

The brown trout are on their way upstream right now, but have not started spawning yet.

The Murray cod fishing has slowed down right across the region although there are still a few cod being caught in most known Murray cod areas.

The key to cod fishing success at the moment is to set your expectations a little lower than you would six weeks ago, be patient and persistent, and then appreciate the autumn Murray cod when you do catch one.
