Warby wanderers By KYLIE WILSON THEY may come from a range of different backgrounds and age groups, but a common thread of camaraderie and a love of the outdoors unites the members of the Warby Range Bushwalkers, especially in the cooler days of autumn. The group, which has been around for almost 30 years, go on regular bushwalks throughout the North East and beyond, and member Glenda Hall said members all enjoy being active and appreciating nature. “This group is populated by a terrific bunch of people,� she said. And with such a variety of natural wonders to appreciate on their walks, Glenda said it was little wonder that many members of the group are quite “environmentally aware�. She said the North East was blessed with a wide diversity of plant and animal life, to the extent that even different areas of the WarbyOvens National Park were markedly dissimilar to each other. Glenda counted the distinctive grass trees in the Warby-Ovens National Park and the snowgums at Mt Feathertop among her favourites. “It’s fabulous to be in the great outdoors, and bushwalking gives you a feeling of satisfaction and exhilaration,� she said. Club members share knowledge in areas of botany, birds, butterflies and even history, so each walk sees members learning facts about the area they had not known before.

What’s in your garden: Our whole caravan park is our garden. It is full of 50 year old deciduous trees that the original owner Jim Ardern planted when he developed the caravan park. We have a mix of plane trees, liquidambars, maples, and elms. And at this time of year the Park is full of colour. We have also planted mixed camellia hedges to line the roadways, which should look fantastic as they mature.
What do you enjoy about gardening: Being outside, this time of year, the colours in the trees are amazing. In the short amount of time we have been here at Ardern’s we are trying to make improvements all of the time. We have done things like plant more trees, improve garden beds etc. So watching as the new trees and shrubs grow and flower is very rewarding. Favourite plant/spot in your garden:
Under the plane trees in summer is fantastic. The shade they create drops the temperature by a good 10 degrees on the really hot days. Water saving/ conservation tip: We mulch all of the autumn leaves and place on garden beds so that they don’t dry out in the hotter weather and we’ve installed water tanks for watering lawns and gardens.
AS the second month of autumn comes to a close, daytime temperatures have been warm with sunny days and blue skies. Perfect conditions for growing roses and they are looking great. Repeat flowering roses are currently in their autumn flush with a brilliant show of blooms. It has been a fantastic season for roses which thrive in the hot sunny conditions. With very little rainfall and low humidity, fungal diseases like black spot (dark spots on yellowing leaves), powdery mildew (white mouldy patches) and rust (raised orange bumps) have not been a major problem. Nurseries and garden centres have a range of potted roses in flower now. Roses can be purchased while still in flower, to plant and brighten up the garden as winter blooms. Roses, including new release roses, can also be ordered through nurseries and online mail order suppliers for delivery when dormant. Roses thrive in a sunny position with plenty of air movement around the plants. Before planting, prepare the soil by digging in some aged manure or compost and some Dynamic Lifter pellets. Roses, especially standards and miniatures, do well in pots. Use a premium quality potting mix, formulated for roses.

To prolong flowering, feed roses while they are actively growing with an all-purpose rose fertiliser sprinkled around the drip line, where the feeder roots lay below the soil. Then water in thoroughly to help the fertiliser dissolve and penetrate into the soil. Feed with a liquid fertiliser like Charlie Carp or Seasol fortnightly during the peak flowering season and deadhead spent flowers. To bring the colours indoors, cut long stemmed flowers with sharp secateurs or scissors and place in a bucket of water while preparing the vase, as this extends the life of the bloom. For a longer lasting display, cut half opened blooms and hang them upside down to dry. They can be used in dried flower arrangements, or use the petals in pot-pourri. Roses are beautiful flowers and even without special attention, will keep growing and blooming, as they are tough and very forgiving. Happy gardening.

Pyometra in dogs WE seem to be having a run on pyometra cases at the moment. This is a disease of undesexed female dogs and its name is quite descriptive in that “pyo” refers to pus and “metra” refers to the uterus. These typically occur in mid to older aged undesexed females and usually develop 1-2 months after the dog has been in heat. During the reproductive cycle the lining of the uterus becomes moist and swollen which is a perfect environment for bacterial growth. If bacteria are able to ascend from the lower reproductive tract a uterine infection ensues. The amount of pus that can accumulate in the uterus is quite staggering with one recent case seeing us remove a uterus filled with nearly 7kg of pus! The cervix forms a barrier between the uterus and the lower reproductive tract. If it is open the owners usually report a yellow pus discharge from the vulva and the dog doesn’t seem to be that unwell. In a closed pyometra, no drainage is possible so no discharge is seen. As the pus is trapped inside these patients tend to be much sicker.
In severe cases without treatment death is possible. Dogs will often be picky with their appetite and can be lethargic. Bloating of the abdomen may be seen. In many cases components of the bacteria involved in the infection (E. Coli) find their way into the bloodstream and cause disruption of the kidneys. In these patients an insatiable thirst and frequent large volume urination is often witnessed. In most cases this resolves with successful treatment. The best treatment for pyometra is stabilisation followed by surgery to remove the ovaries and uterus. This removes the large volume of pus from the body in one piece and dogs usually recover rapidly. Some protocols exist for medical management, but their success is not guaranteed and they are often quite tough on the patient. Surgical intervention is usually recommended. This condition cannot occur in desexed animals as they have no uterus to become infected and they do not come into season. Spaying a female dog usually costs around $250-350 when it is done as a routine procedure,
whereas the cost of stabilising and operating on a sick dog with a large pyometra may cost between $1000 and $2000. Many female dogs are desexed at a young age and never have the risk of this disease. However, some dogs have a litter or two of puppies and never get desexed. The main message in this case is that it isn’t really ever too late to have a female dog desexed. Having the operation at 7-8 years of age is still common and recommended to help prevent serious diseases such as pyometra, as well as helping to prevent unwanted pregnancies in an aging dog. In many cases as dogs get older their reproductive cycles can become irregular and this often puts them at much higher risk of developing a pyometra infection. Founding member Adrian Twitt agrees, as does fellow walker Kerri Davenport, noting that often the majesty of a view encountered on a walk can be awe inspiring and thought provoking. “Sometimes, you’ll just feel really insignificant,” she said. Recent additions to the group, Guy and Robyn Robertson, were motivated to join not only to be social, but as a way of keeping fit. “You’re seeing sights not many would see,” Robyn said of the walks they had participated in. For club members, the social aspect and camaraderie becomes
just as important as being active and appreciating the environment. “It’s become a friendship club,” said Kerri. Adrian said “people look after each other” on walks, with everyone travelling at their own pace, having conversations with each other or simply appreciating the view on their own, depending on their mood. He said the group takes safety and being properly equipped very seriously, and each member is encouraged to actively participate in walks as much as possible. IT’S that time of the year where the big breeding trout are starting to swim upstream and pair up, ready to spawn in another few weeks. Lack of rainfall is a problem for some trout, particularly in the smaller waterways, hindering their upstream migration. Each waterway is different, so let’s look at the best places to find big trout at this time of the year. Lakes When conditions are dry like they are now at this time of the year, the larger trout can often be found in the river and creek mouths of lakes, preparing to swim upstream to spawn as soon as we get some decent rain and there is enough water flow for them to swim freely upstream. So focus your attention around the

mouths of creeks and rivers. Rivers In rivers with enough water flow for trout to swim freely upstream and downstream, head upstream to where you think the big breeding trout might be likely to go. Trout spawn over gravel beds in the creeks and rivers, so head upstream to areas that you know have fine gravel with shallow water flowing over it. In rivers and creeks which are only trickling at the moment, the trout will be stuck in ‘refuge pools’ as they wait for rain.

Concentrate your efforts on deeper holes that you think could have held trout all summer, holes that are deep, well shaded and have good cover such as logs and rock ledges. Lures Anything that is either jet black as the trout are still feeding on crickets, or fluorescent coloured as trout will soon be looking for fish eggs. Fluorescent coloured bladed spinners such as obsession spinners and rooster tails work very well at this time of the year. Bait It’s all about live crickets at the moment. As soon as we get some decent rainfall and increased stream flows, drifting worms may become an option, but we will need a lot of rain.

The fruit for the wine came from an elevated vineyard in the Strathbogie Ranges, which is apparently known from growing particularly perfumed Shiraz, which seems to be the case. It’s a joy to bury the nose in but it certainly doesn’t disappoint in the tasting, with deliciously savoury plum fruit, toasty oak and bay spice. It’s a flavour which lasts in more ways than one, and unlike food trends, won’t be going out of fashion any time soon. Available from local outlets or visit www.winebysam.com.au.

New school for Myrtleford, 1939 MYRTLEFORD’S new state school, built at a cost of £4500, was officially opened by the Minister for Public Instruction, Sir John Harrison, on April 27, 1939.
THIS spin on tacos was developed by the Dietitians Association of Australia and makes an ideal light dinner or lunch. The recipe comes from Everyday Health: Light, Fresh and Tasty, which can be downloaded at healthyweightweek. com.au/australias-healthy-weight-weekcookbook/. Method 1. In a shallow bowl or plate combine fish with juice of 1 lime, cumin, and 1 tablespoon olive oil. Allow to marinate for 15 minutes. 2. Grate cucumber and finely grate garlic onto a chopping board. Slice the chilli and chop into the salsa. Chop the coriander leaves and stir in. Slice spring onions and chop roughly into the salsa on the board. Mix in ½ tablespoon olive oil, juice of half a lime and a pinch of salt. Stir in cherry tomatoes. 3. Preheat a non-stick frying pan over high heat. Add fish and cook for 2-3 minutes each side or until just cooked. Meanwhile, halve the avocado and remove the seed. Scrape out flesh into a small food processor.
Add remaining ½ tablespoon olive oil and juice of half a lime. Add a pinch of salt and blend to combine. Alternatively, mash avocado with a fork. 4. Remove fish from pan, flake with a fork or tongs. Warm tortillas if desired. Spread with guacamole, top with flaked fish and salsa. Serve immediately.

BURGERS have changed a lot since they came with cheese or with “the lot” from the local fish and chip shop. In the better joints, a handful of mince was squished on the hot plate with a spatula next to the bacon and egg while a bun was flattened and crispened. It was all belted tightly in paper before being shoved in a lunch bag to take away. Nowadays we’re told the breed of the beast, the protein is “pulled” instead of pushed and we pay through the nose like it was fillet steak. It’s true that many of the new style versions do taste great, but I’d happily swap the sugary sweet brioche for the flattened burger bun any day of the week. Try making the old school version at home and take it up a notch with a glass of Wine x Sam The Victorian Shiraz. It’s a deep and dark, purpletinged wine which has a

Budget time is approaching I HAVE been reading a lot that my peers, closer than me to the coal face, have been contemplating that federal treasurer Scott Morrison will have in his budget. A cut to the company tax rate is still likely but will be a lot more modest than previously thought, given the lack of options to create savings elsewhere. The government has considered the introduction of some minor reforms to the superannuation system, including a lowering of the personal income threshold at which 30 per cent, rather than the present 15 per cent tax rate is applied to superannuation contributions. In other words a reduction in $300,000 presently allowed to $180,000. (Labor are proposing a reduction to $250,000.) They are also considering

In respect of the taxation of superannuation, it is likely the government may consider a variation to the Opposition’s proposal to introduce a tax on earnings exceeding $75,000 in the retirement phase. In my opinion this would be a great way for those high income earners who have had the benefit of reduced taxation by contributions to superannuation to pay a share of taxation on the
earnings of their larger than life super funds. I will be very surprised if there is no changes to a deduction for work related expenses. The government appears likely to tighten the availability of deductions with some form of broad category-based caps, designed to create revenue savings for government and simplify income tax returns for taxpayers. But again this will affect the lower income earners, as it is easier to reduce their refunds than chase the high flyers. It also appears that excise on tobacco will be increased as both the government and the Labor Party have this on their wish list. Treasurer Morrison has indicated issues with bracket creep, which in his opinion must be addressed, and the government has given a strong indication that
there will be no cuts to personal income tax rates in this budget. One suggestion I saw was that the government was looking at taxing superannuation contributions at a person’s marginal tax rate minus a discount factor (eg 10 per cent), but this was considered too complex to administer. One item Labor proposed was to limit negative gearing to new housing from July 1, 2017. The government argues that this would distort the housing market, increase rents, inhibit growth and increase unemployment. But I would not be surprised if not too far away, a government will undertake to reform negative gearing, probably with a cap on the dollar amount claimable as a deduction and the figure I am hearing is $50,000.
The government has rejected the option of reducing the Capital Gains Tax discount from 50 per cent to 25 per cent as proposed by Labor. But I think the government may still be considering reducing the Capital Gains Tax discount available to superannuation funds from 33 per cent to nil, so this could be a surprise on budget night. Any change to the amount of Goods and Services Tax payable has been ruled out for lack of GDP growth potential. The government has indicated the temporary budget repair levy will not be extended beyond June 30, 2017. I think the budget speech of May 3 will not carry much joy for Mr Average, but there may be some surprises in superannuation and negative gearing.
