MANY people think of art as something that is worked on gradually over a period of time, but an activity taking place during the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz is set to challenge that perception and portray jazz in a whole new light. This year’s festival will see a host of local artists participating in the Paint Presto program, which will see them create new jazz inspired works and exhibit them, all in the space of one weekend. Among the artists looking forward to taking part in the Paint Presto program during the festival is King Valley based artist Michael Ashby. “We can do anything while the bands are playing,” Mr Ashby said. “It serves to look at Wangaratta and district in a different way. “It’s a great idea.” Mr Ashby, whose preferred medium is oils, said the Paint Presto initiative is reminiscent of public places in Europe, where artists will sit and paint the landscape or the people passing by. And he is looking forward to seeing how each artist involved will interpret the sights, sounds and atmosphere of Wangaratta’s biggest festival. A North East resident since 2009, he has become highly involved in the local art scene, including being one of the organisers of the annual King Valley Art Show. “It’s a very friendly scene, and we’re quite proud of the King Valley Art Show,” he said. Paint Presto, initiated by local artist and art educator Janet Leith, was inspired by visits Ms Leith made to Glasgow and Amsterdam, and seeing artists work in public there. The weekend’s schedule will see registered artists locate themselves throughout Wangaratta, at performances and public spaces between 11am-6pm on Saturday, to draw and paint their own interpretation of what they are hearing. continued page |
