Taking a lead role with the ladies
◆ COMMON GROUND: Gracie York is taking on the lead role of Lisa Miles in Ladies in Black next month at WPACC.
By BELINDA HARRISON
TAKING on the lead role as Lisa Miles in the Wangaratta Players’ August performances of Ladies in Black was quite comfortable for Gracie York.
The 18 year old Wangaratta High School student learnt about the role through leaders at the Wangaratta Players Youth Group ‘Youthies’ and was encouraged to audition.
“Bec and Lexi encouraged all of us to audition for Ladies in Black to
VET CORNER
learn about the process that actors go through when they go for roles,”
Gracie said.
“I have seen the film version of Ladies in Black many times, and have always loved the story and the characters.
“I thought that an opportunity to perform in a stage version would be brilliant as I can relate to Lisa on many levels as we are both studious and shy, and have
big dreams for the future.”
Gracie is currently completing year 12 and hopes to study musical theatre at university next year.
“Unfortunately at school there is no drama class available for senior students, so I was grateful for the opportunity to join Youthies mid-last year,” she said.
“With the experience I gained through performing with them, I felt confident to put myself forward for a
role like Lisa in Ladies in Black.”
Gracie’s mother, Robyn, is also part of the cast of Ladies in Black and said that it’s a great stepping stone towards the future Gracie hopes to pursue in musical theatre.
“She’s incredibly lucky to be working with such a knowledgeable cast and crew who have a wealth of experience and expertise and have shared that with her,” she said.
Gracie reiterated the sentiments.
“It’s an amazing experience working with everyone and I’m very grateful for the opportunity; they have taken me under their wing and made me feel very welcome,” she said.
“I appreciate their willingness to share their knowledge and experience with me and I have learnt so much in a short space of time.”

Rare emerald frog- the Green and Gold Frog
IF you ever spot the distinctive pointed snout, golden iris and olivebrown to bright emerald-green body of a beautiful Green and Gold Frog –consider yourself lucky.
There aren’t as many of them around as there were only a decade ago and they are listed as endangered in New South Wales.
These frogs mainly live in the north of Tasmania, and in small remnant pockets in the south and east of the state.
Green and Gold Frogs also live in south-eastern Australia in Victoria, a small area of South Australia and in the south of New South Wales.
The best time to hear Green and Gold Frogs is between August and April – when males are making a short grunting ‘crok-crok‘ followed by a growling ‘craw-craw-craw‘.
Green and Gold frogs spend most of their time in the water, and stay close to permanent ponds, lagoons, dams and lakes.
They sometimes bask in the sunlight, but mainly spend the day sheltering amongst bulrushes and plants at the water’s edge.
Once the sun goes down, Green and Gold frogs get ready to feed on beetles, water snails, small frogs, lizards, snakes, fish or other small animals.
with Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife
Green and Gold Frogs are also known as green and golden bell frog, green and golden swamp frog and green frogs.
These are all common names for the same frog species.
You can provide a home for Green and Gold Frogs by placing logs, branches and rocks around ponds for them to sun themselves on or shelter under if the water level drops.
Keep or replant appropriate sedges, reeds and other semi-aquatic plants so that Green and Gold frogs have a safe place to lay their eggs.
Did you know?
The Green and Gold Frog is a fast mover – in 24 hours they can travel up to a kilometre.
This is a long distance when you consider they’re only 10cm long.
Tip
Avoid introducing fish such as Goldfish and Gambusia into your pond if you’re trying to attract frogs.
These species prey on tadpoles.

This Day in History, 1882
THIS day in 1882 saw Yarrawonga covered in snow. When Mr Gourlay brought his Cobb and Co coach into town from Benalla, he had to run the gauntlet of snowballs, pelted by the young fry of the town. The snowfall, by the time it had finished, covered much of south-eastern Australia.

Toilet leak test
JUST one dripping tap can waste four litres a day.
There are some things you can do to check for leaks around your home:
Place a cup under each tap while you are out of the house for the day - if there is more than a dribble in each cup when you return, you need to replace the washer;
Put a few drops of food dye in the toilet cistern - if in 15 minutes your toilet bowl is anything but pearly white, you have a leak that could be costing you 100 litres per day.
To check for a water leak:
Turn off all taps in your house; Write down all the numbers on the dial of your water meter;
Don’t use water for at least a few hourswe recommend overnight;
Before you use your water check the dial on the water meter again - if any numbers have changed you may have a leaking pipe, tap, toilet cistern, solar hot water service or other appliance or fitting.
If you have a leak, you should call a
Follow these simple steps to check if your toilet has a leak:
Remove the lid of your toilet cistern; Place a few drops of food dye into the cistern;
Do not flush your toilet for 10-15 minutes.
If the dye has seeped down into the bowl when you return, then you have a leak.
Toilet leaks are often a result of the rubber valve in the cistern deteriorating. You can contact a licensed plumber to fix this for you.

Taking a lead role with the ladies
■ From page 1
Gracie performed a cover version of She Used To Be Mine from the musical The Waitress at the Youthies showcase in December last year and it was there that director of Ladies in Black Colette Quin saw her.
“I was blown away by Gracie’s performance and stage presence,” Colette said.
“I knew right then that she would make a perfect Lisa for Ladies in Black, but I didn’t know if she would be able to make such a commitment as she would be going into year 12.
“Thankfully, she was extremely keen to be involved and when she came in to audition, the rest of the panel agreed that she was just right for the role.”
While this is Gracie’s first role with the Wangaratta Players and in a semi-professional setting, she has been on stage throughout primary and high school.
“When I was in grade six (at Wangaratta West) I enjoyed playing one of the lead roles in Rhythm Safari and when I was in year nine, I was given the opportunity to play Tomika in School Of Rock,” Gracie said.
“Sadly though, the School of Rock production was cancelled due to COVID.”
Gracie has also been part of the Wangaratta High School band ‘Sol Cats’ for the past two years.
“I have always loved singing and with Sol Cats we perform a mix of soul and blues tunes,” she said.
FEATURE STORY
Gracie said she loves the freedom of performing, the ability to connect with an audience, to be a different person and to share that personality with others.
“I also love the way that theatre can change lives, and that doing something I enjoy can have a positive effect on the lives of others,” Gracie added.
“Being a singer, I especially enjoy performing in musicals, as I believe there is an incredibly strong level of emotion that can be expressed through music.”
At this stage, Gracie’s dream roles would be either Belle from Beauty and the Beast or Veronica Sawyer from Heathers and if her performance as Lisa Miles is anything to go by, she would carry them off with ease and aplomb.
Ladies in Black will be staged at the Wangaratta Performing Arts & Convention Centre (WPACC) on Thursday August 17, Friday, August 18 and Saturday, August 19 at 7pm, with a matinee performance on Saturday, August 19 at 2pm.
Tickets are selling fast so visit the WPACC box office in Ford Street or online at https:// wpacc.sales.ticketsearch.com/sales/ salesevent/95168.

IF you’re looking for an easy way to keep track of all your tools, Milwaukee have got you covered with the ONE-KEY app.
The ONE-KEY platform is the perfect inventory management system for your Milwaukee tools to ensure small setbacks don’t cause big headaches.
One of the main features of the ONE-KEY platform is tool tracking.
ONE-KEY uses community Bluetooth tracking to ensure you can always find your lost tools.
Not only can you view the last seen location of the tool, but if you mark one missing their network of hundreds of thousands can help find it.
You can also add Geofences to your tools to ensure they don’t leave your work site and if they do, you’ll be notified.
The ONE-KEY platform also allows you to
Five reasons to wear sunglasses in winter
EVEN though the weather is colder and there’s less sun in the sky, here are some reasons you should still wear sunglasses in winter:
1. Protect your eyes from UV
around your eyes and headaches.
So, on crisp yet sunny days if you find yourself squinting, pop those sunglasses on.
4. Prevent dry eyes
see a tool inventory not only for yourself, but your entire team.
This allows you to assign a tool to a team member through managing the item details allowing you to know who has the tool at any given time and also see a tools history.
ONE-KEY also allows you to communicate with your team all in one place through calling, texting or emailing them right from the app as well as assigning roles to different team members.
So whether you work on your own DIY projects and need to keep track of where your tools are or need to manage and delegate roles to your team, ONE-KEY has you covered.
A cool day can still have a similar level of UV radiation as a warm day; UV rays can still penetrate through clouds and occasionally if reflected off the clouds are actually more intense.
To protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes from sun damage, wear your sunglasses all year round.
2. Reduce reflected glare with polarised lenses
Winter brings harsh glare and reflections especially at the snow or when the sun sits low on a foggy day.
Polarised sunglasses contain built in filters that will significantly cut back the intensity of glare and reflections, making it much easier for you to get around safely.
3. Reduce visual fatigue
Squinting to see for long periods of time can cause muscular aches, fine lines and wrinkles
Cold and windy days can create a dry environment for our poor little peepers.
Have you ever been at the footy or taking a walk and suddenly your eyes are watering?
This will be because the wind has dried your eyes out and they start to overcompensate for the lack of natural lubrication.
After your eyes stream for a while, they start to become uncomfortable and can temporarily distort your vision.
Sunglasses will act as a barrier for these conditions, leaving your mascara intact.
