CHRIS Gerrett has been ensconced in the world of Ned Kelly history for decades. Operating Kate’s Cottage in Glenrowan, literally a stone’s throw from the town’s imposing statue of Ned Kelly, she has seen a range of Kellyrelated works come across her desk, from the rarest of antique volumes to more recent bestselling works. Now on the verge of retiring after more than 40 years in the tourism business, the Wangaratta resident looks back on her decades interacting with Kelly enthusiasts with fondness. Chris has always loved the area and its tourism potential, particularly with Wangaratta being a hub for so many nearby towns. “Glenrowan draws business from all over the world,” she enthused. A born and bred local, Chris has had a fascination with reading, and an interest in the Ned Kelly story and its surrounding history, ever since childhood. She remembers her father telling many “tall tales” about Ned Kelly riding through her family’s paddocks and hiding “booty” there, which, although weren’t true, definitely drew her in. “I’ve grown up with this story,” Chris said. She said over the years people from all walks of life have visited her at Kate’s Cottage in Glenrowan to find a range of Ned Kelly related books, all sharing their passion for the subject. “They have strong opinions about different publications,” Chris said. “It’s just amazing what you come across.” Over time, she has catalogued and written information about all the Ned Kelly related books that she has seen in her work, from the dates of editions to recording inaccurate information in some editions, changes between editions, and much more. The result is a thick volume cataloguing a life’s work. continued page |

Five steps to buff up your finances IT’S time to get fiscal, and pump up your financial wellbeing. Detox your finances - whittle away debt Your overall debt is important, but some types of debt are worse for your financial health than others.
In particular, relying on high interest debt to pay for items of no lasting value is the fiscal equivalent of carrying unwanted kilos. Detox your finances by aiming to clear high interest debt – like credit card or store card balances, with extra repayments. Or consider switching to a low rate credit card. Savings on interest charges make it easier to clear the debt sooner. Tone your savings Personal savings is one muscle group none of us can afford to overlook. Savings are the foundation of wealth and can provide a financial lifeline when unexpected expenses crop up. Your budget will show how much you can set aside in regular savings. Now make it happen by organising an automatic funds transfer from your everyday bank account to a high interest savings account. Time the transfer to coincide with pay days to be sure you give savings (rather than spending) top priority. Aim for a personal best Debt under control? Check. Action taken to grow savings? Check. ◆ FRESH: Mint can be a handy addition to your garden, but must be kept under control.
When mint ain’t just mint ONE of the most versatile and flavoursome of all herbs is mint. Known botanically as Mentha, there are many different species and many hybrids and cultivars distributed around the world. They are known for their aromatic aromas and flavours. But not all mints taste the same. Some to try include; - Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) which has the strongest mint flavour. - Spearmint (Mentha spicata) has large leaves with a mild flavour and can withstand higher soil moisture. - Lemon mint (Mentha x piperita f. citrata) has a citrus taste. - Apple mint (Mentha suaveolens) has a fresh apple mint flavour and grows up to a metre tall and wide. - Chocolate mint (Mentha x piperita ‘Chocolate’) has a chocolaty taste and fragrance. It has dark green leaves, purpletinted stems and grows to a metre in height with a wide spread. It can be a problem if not kept under control. - Orange mint (Mentha piperita f. citrata ‘Orange’), has bright green leaves lightly tinged with red. The foliage has a citrus flavour and fragrance.
Most mint plants are perennial with underground and above ground stems. They grow easily and spread quickly. For this reason they are considered invasive though some mint species are more invasive than others. Take precautions when planting mint with any other plants, in case the mint takes over. To keep mint under control, grow it in a separate garden bed, or plant in deep, bottomless containers sunk into the ground, or grow it in pots and tubs. Mint thrives in moist well drained soil and tolerates full sun to part shade. To keep the plant in peak condition, harvest or tip prune frequently and remove the flowers as soon as they appear. This encourages shorter bushier growth and the newer, younger leaves have the most flavour. Divide mint every few years. Mint propagates easily by cuttings. Take a 10 - 15cm cutting with roots attached and plant horizontally in the soil. Growing from seed is unreliable as the plant may not grow true to form. To avoid cross pollination space plants as far apart as possible. Happy gardening.

Working with your vet to achieve the best outcome for your pet HERE are some tips on how to get the best out of your vet: 1. Be open about financial limitations. They can work with you and generally tailor options within your needs. 2. Be honest about the history. They are not judging and a good accurate history is 80 per cent of their diagnosis. 3. Keep up with annual health checks. This helps them to understand your pet better and prevents problems getting worse over the years and costing more money to fix. 4. Follow agreed-upon treatments to the tee, and appear for scheduled rechecks even when the problem seems cured. This allows the vet to modify treatments based on your pet’s response and to further discuss any questions you may have. 5. Ask questions if you don’t understand. We all have different background knowledge and learning techniques.
6. Ask the expert, not your friends/Facebook group/google. There’s a lot of confusing, conflicting information out there. Vets are scientists so part of their job is to give you the information that is backed up by evidence. Dr Linda Bradbury, veterinarian

One such tidbit she enjoyed was Ned Kelly’s relationship to the classic book Lorna Doone, which she said was among one of the first cheaply produced “pulp fiction� titles available to readers of poor backgrounds. She said this book, which describes a type of iron armour within its pages – as well as other influences such as a metal Chinese warlord armour at a parade in Beechworth at the time, and an iron clad warship called a Monitor docked in Port Phillip Bay, were quite possibly all among the inspirations for the Kelly gang’s iconic armour. Many a rare or interesting book has come across her desk, but the 1881 Royal Commission investigating the behaviour of the Victorian police force, held in the wake of the Kelly saga, is by far the most sought after book she has seen. The commission took place after much

Its aim was to try and understand the attitudes and lawlessness of some in the police force towards the selectors of the time. “The ultimate book to have is the Royal Commission,� she said. Chris said it was ultimately the complexity and drama of the Ned Kelly story that continues to divide public opinion and see stories created about him to this day. “Everyone’s got an opinion,� she said. Personally, she feels an affinity for Ned Kelly’s “larrikin� side and sympathised with the oppression and bad treatment people of Irish descent received at the time, but she said there are too many shades of grey to the story to paint Ned Kelly as entirely bad or good.

A chilly Mr Mills, 1905 WANGARATTA’S Her Majesty’s Theatre was the venue for a concert on the evening of July 26, 1905, by the celebrated basso Watkin Mills. Mills had picked up a cold in Goulburn earlier in the tour, and had been unable to sing at Albury the night before. He managed to perform at his Wangaratta concert, but the bulk of the singing was done by his associates in the company. It was so cold in the theatre that the singers wore overcoats on the stage during breaks in song cycles.
Grain bowl THIS recipe, supplied by the Grains and Legumes Nutrition Council, is a great way to use up leftover veggies and odd bits from the fridge. If you’re using precooked quinoa or rice, it can be on the table in minutes. METHOD Preheat the oven to 180C. Cook the brown rice or quinoa as per pack instructions. Mix the chickpeas with the tsp olive oil, spices and seasoning to taste and place in a baking dish in the preheated oven for 15 minutes – shake half way through. Make your dressing by combining the EVOO, lemon juice and tahini with seasoning to taste. Divide the brown rice or quinoa, veg, leafy greens, chickpeas and a tablespoon or two of the hummus or guacamole between two bowls. Drizzle the dressing over and top with a sprinkling of seeds. Top with the chicken, salmon or feta if using. Tip: Mix it up and use wheat berries or buckwheat instead of quinoa.

IT is great to see so many places embracing the Spanish concept of tapas. While in many places it may not be recognisable from the traditional practice or fare, you could say venues have added their own unique twist to the idea of eating something small with a drink. Here it can also mean a share plate of snacks or appetisers of any nationality, allowing diners to graze on a variety of savoury flavours, rather than only trying one main meal. I’m all for traditional tapas and even the somewhat corrupted versions, because you get to taste more of the delicious things a chef and their team has created without feeling overwhelmed. Some especially delicious tapas dishes include salt cod croquettes, Serrano ham, garlic prawns and spicy meatballs and they taste delicious with Pfeiffer Wines Tempranillo. This dark, ruby coloured

A RECENT report from the National Bureau of Economic Research in the United States has found that men aged in their 20’s are working 203 hours less per year, on average, and that they are largely filling those hours playing video games or partaking in other online activities. Moreover, while Australia’s Bureau of Statistics hasn’t run a time-use survey since 2006, there is a distinct correlation in our own employment data for the same age and gender which suggests our own young men might be exhibiting the same behavioural patterns. In May 2007, of males aged between 15 and 24, 84 per cent were employed in Australia In 2017, that number has dropped significantly to 78.6 per cent. In the US, young men have reduced work by 2.5 hours per week, and the time-use survey conducted found that of those hours, 1.9 of them were filled with recreational computer use and/or video games. So where has this shift come from? In a study entitled ‘Leisure Luxuries and the Labour Supply of Young Men’, researchers Mark Aguiar, Mark Bils, Kerwin Kofi and Charles Erik believe that the vastly increased quality of video games plays a significant factor in the surge in leisure time being devoted to them. Whenever the topic of video games comes up in politics or the media in Australia, the conversation is usually centred around how violent they are, and whether they play a role in real criminal violence. Yes, yes, and television makes your eyes square. And books are from the devil. I’m not going to sugar coat it, the discussion of video games in our country is woefully inadequate. Video games don’t have to be violent to present a threat to a person’s mental health. In fact, the content of a video game is largely insignificant to determining whether or not it presents are problem to an average individual’s well-being. Of far greater concern is the
amount of time they spend playing, and whether it’s impacting time spent on other, important aspects of their life. And if it is impacting their life negatively, it’s important to determine the root cause, and recognise that the video game is only a symptom. If video games are eating away at young men’s careers and income, that certainly presents a problem. So what is the root cause? In a society in which masculinity is labelled ‘toxic’, where ‘male privilege’ is assumed irrespective of individual circumstance (with men told to feel ashamed and guilty about it, whether they have it or not), and one of our most prestigious universities instructs
men to act ‘more like women’ (which is as patronising toward women as it is toward men), is it any wonder young men are suffering a crisis of identity and electing to disengage from reality? Couple that with declining job security, and a housing market that has exploding well beyond the means of millennials to afford, is it truly surprising that young men prefer to exist in a virtual realm where they can actually achieve their goals and ‘be a hero’? Of course, video games are fake, and the ‘goals’ one achieves are ultimately worthless outside of the game. There will be a steep price to pay for this disengagement, and our country will bear the cost of it.

games, it’s one of the cheapest forms of entertainment available. Personally, I could go to the cinema and watch a movie, spending roughly $20 - $30 dollars, and receive two hours of entertainment for my money, or I could spend the same amount of money during a Steam sale (an online video game store), and receive anywhere from dozens of hours of entertainment, to hundreds of hours of entertainment, depending on the types of games I buy. But the fact that this leisure pasttime is eating into the working hours of young men speaks to something more far reaching and worrisome than how good the graphics and gameplay are in video games.
