Wines that span generations
AFTER a painstaking four years of restoration, Dinah Wines is open for business in Rutherglen.
It is owned by the Buller family, who have been in the wine industry ever since Reginald Buller moved to Rutherglen in 1921.
Reginald got his start in the wine industry thanks to his generous neighbour lending him the equipment and vines to start making wines.
Reginald’s neighbour also sold him three

draft horses - Billy, Model and the winery’s namesake Dinah - who had three sound legs and a fourth badly affected with rheumatism.
“For us Dinah represents the hard work, passion and the desire to always move forward,” Kate Buller said.
“We are proud of our history and wanted to
recognise our roots while striving forward for hopefully the generations to come.”
Almost 100 years later in 2019, Reginald’s grandson Richard and his wife Susan Buller, alongside their daughter Kate and her children Rippon, Ivy and Archer, purchased a 57-yearold run down vineyard in desperate need of saving.
“In 2020 we began the mammoth task of vineyard restoration and the building of a new cellar door and winery,” Kate said.
“The site will be an ongoing labour of love as we continue in the vineyard and with the surrounding garden.”
The past 12 months has seen the family working on the construction and completion of the ‘Big Green Shed’, which houses the cellar door. Kate said, like many of the Rutherglen wineries, Dinah Wines is a generational business, where you can currently find three generations on site at any one time.

How to keep and care for pet ducks
DUCKS are curious and intelligent birds that need appropriate housing that meets their physical, behavioural, and social needs.
A good housing environment for ducks should provide them with enough space to move freely as well as access to an open water source so they can engage in natural preening and bathing behaviours.
It’s important to know that ducks are social, so they should be kept with other ducks.
Ducks in your garden:
Ducks love exploring and foraging in gardens.
Unlike chickens, ducks don’t dig but will make small holes in the soft earth while drilling for worms, and will also eat any tasty vegetable in the garden.
So, be sure to fence off any areas in your garden you don’t want your ducks getting into.
Water needs:
Ducks need about one litre of drinking water each per day.
Ducks also use water to keep their eyes, bills, feet, and feathers in good condition.
Water for bathing should be deep enough for ducks to submerge their whole head and body under the water, to wash their body.
The water container should have a shallow edge so the ducks can easily get in and out of the water.
Shallow-edged pools, such as kids’ pools, or a tub that’s about 20cm deep, are ideal.
Supervise swimming until ducks can safely get in and out of the pool.
Avoid using old bathtubs as they can be slippery and dangerous.
Housing requirements:
Ducks need a secure pen or house to protect them from the weather and predators.
Each duck requires at least 1.5 m2 of space if confined during the day, and around 0.5 m2 at night.
Duck housing must be easy to clean, as ducks defecate frequently.
Rice hulls make an excellent bedding and floor cover, being soft, long-lasting, and welldraining.
If you have female ducks that lay eggs, then they’ll need a private nesting spot with appropriate bedding material.
Food and water containers should be kept inside the house, and separate to avoid water contamination.
Remember to change drinking water daily.
Health care:
Regular worming every six months is recommended.
Ducks can develop foot ulcers if kept on rough surfaces, so watch for swelling, sores, or limping and consult a veterinarian if needed.

This Day in History, 1880
THE SIEGE OF GLENROWAN, DAY 1
THE first step in a strategy designed to strike down their police pursuers was taken by the Kelly Gang.
This day in 1880 was a Saturday, and while Ned Kelly and Steve Hart made their way to Glenrowan, Joe Byrne and Dan Kelly quietly staked out Aaron Sherrit’s hut in the Woolshed Valley.
Persuaded by a ruse to open the door, Sherritt presented an easy target and was shot by Byrne.
Three policemen, supposed to be on duty guarding Sherritt, hid under the bed.
Failing to persuade the police to come out, either to fight or surrender, Byrne and Kelly made their way to Glenrowan to join the rest of the gang.
At Glenrowan, Ned Kelly and Steve Hart were forcing gangers to dismantle a section of the track on a bend where the railway turned North for descent down the Warby Range to Wangaratta.
◆ OPENING UP: Mt Hotham opened up more terrain and lifts on Saturday. With fresh snowfalls and snowmaking guns blazing, the resort opened the Road Runner chairlift, providing access to some of Australia’s best progressive terrain that starts with the gentle green slope of the Summit into the blue Sun Run. The Basin run is also open, with access to Road Runner, so you can drop in straight from
Snow fun for the whole family
THE colder weather is setting in with more snow showers expected throughout the week.
There is plenty of family fun to be had from July 1 to 5 with Kids Week at Mt Buller.
There will different child friendly activities on offer each day and Mt Buller mascots, Blake the Flake and Barry the Pygmy Possum, will be out and about.
Mt Buller currently has 27cm of snow making for great ski conditions at Bourke Street.
While skiing and tobogganing is still not available at Dinner Plain yet, there is still plenty of snow fun to be had.
The snow guns are firing and plenty of snow fall can be expected this weekend and early next week.
At Falls Creek, the snow season is in full swing with around 16cm of snow and more to come over the weekend.
Four out of the 15 ski lifts are open with many of the attractions already open, includ-

ing Twilight Tuesdays every week.
Mt Hotham is encouraging people to rug up and join in the snow play before the skiing and tobogganing opens back up as they open up more lifts and terrain.
There is currently 14cm of snow and there are currently four lifts and seven trails open.
Mt Buffalo still hasn’t experienced any snow but are expecting snow to fall later in the week. Chains are required to be carried for all resorts and fitted where instructed.

Understanding naturopathy (part one)
◆ REBALANCE YOUR BODY: Naturopathy can help identify your body’s weaknesses and make lifestyle changes to treat them.
Butter Chicken with rice and naan
THIS recipe from Australian Onions is perfect comfort food for winter and serves four people.
WE often get asked what is naturopathy?
What do you do and can you help me with ... xyz disease...?
The short answer is mostly yes.
In more than 10 years of practice I haven’t found a disease or symptom that can’t be helped with simple diet and lifestyle changes, plus or minus some well-placed supplements.
In simple terms, naturopathy is a system of natural healthcare based on assessing and treating the cause of ill health.
What we find is that for most people there will be a certain weakness that their body is
prone to when it is under stress (stress can be physical like an injury, lifestyle induced like eating foods that don’t agree with you, poor sleep habits or it can be an emotional or mental response).
These stressors tend to affect our weakest link – this is why one person is prone to PMS, others are always tired or bloated and someone else always gets a cold or sinus infection whenever they are run down, stressed or not eating well.
One common example we see is women who become sluggish and fatigued commonly after a hormonal change, like menopause or having a child.
They say, “ever since the birth of my second child I can eat well and go to the gym, but I still feel sluggish”.
They become frustrated because they eat better than their friends who don’t seem to have these problems with bloating and a sluggish metabolism.
This is because for this person, the stress of the hormonal change has affected their metabolism.
For their friend it may cause more PMS, anxiety or skin issues instead.
We have many tools to assess these symptoms and to rebalance the body.
To learn more about how naturopathy can rebalance your body, see our next article on July 31 or follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook. com/nenaturalhealthcentre) and Instagram (https://www. instagram.com/northeastnaturalhealthcentre/).

INGREDIENTS:
• ¼ cup Greek yoghurt
• ¼ cup butter chicken paste or tandoori paste
• 1 tsp ground cumin
• ½ tsp ground ginger
• 1kg chicken thigh fillets, trimmed, cut in half crossways
• ¼ cup Ghee or vegetable oil
• 2 brown onions, peeled, halved, thinly sliced
• 2 cups tomato passata sauce
• 300ml thickened cream
• 1 tsp white sugar
• Steamed rice, toasted naan bread, coriander to serve Method:
1. Combine yoghurt, paste, cumin, and ginger in a large bowl. Add chicken, stir until well coated.
frying pan over medium high heat. Cook the chicken in batches, turning occasionally, for 3 minutes, or until browned. Remove to a clean plate.
3. Reduce heat to medium, add onions and remaining ghee / oil. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 8 minutes, or until onion is soft. Return chicken to pan with passata, cream and sugar. Bring to simmer. Simmer, uncovered for 20 minutes, or until sauce is thickens and chicken is cooked through.
4. Serve butter chicken with rice, naan bread and coriander.
Tips:
• If you can’t find butter chicken paste, you can use tandoori paste, it’s a little spicier.
• Ghee is clarified butter, you will find it in jars in the international section of the supermarket. Once opened store in the fridge. Use it in place of butter when working with filo pastry or cooking pancakes.
• Toast naan bread in a large dry frying pan over a medium-high heat or wrapped in foil in a hot oven.
2. Heat half the ghee/ oil in a wok or large

“The significance of this for us is having the knowledge of generational history while now also being small enough to be able to consider everyone who comes into the winery part of the Dinah family,” she said.
According to Kate, they are a very tight knit family who work well together.
Even Kate’s children have started working on the family business, including her youngest Archer who has started hand picking grapes and working on the tractor at nine years old.
“Working with family does mean you are always on call, but watching the young kids be taught life lessons by their grandparents while out working together is amazing and something I’m sure the children will remember for the rest of their lives,” she said.
Kate said that while the family have
100 years of history in the wine businesses, starting fresh with a new winery has been an advantage for them as it allows them to blend both the old and the new.
“We are fortunate that we can enjoy a beautiful new location, building and exciting wines,” she said.
“We can stay boutique, meaning we can keep with current trends while also still honouring the past with traditional styles.”
Now, Dinah Wines are beginning to welcome the public to their winery while continually working on the replanting and rejuvenation to the site in order to bring it to its full potential.
Some of the wines they are currently offering range from a sweeter Moscato, a tannin rich Shiraz to fortified wines.
Kate said they are also working on new wines and are looking forward to releasing their small batch Estate
◆ RICH HISTORY: Winemaking in the Buller family has a 103-year history dating back to Reginald Buller in 1921.
Grown Muller Thrugau later this year.
Outside of the restored vineyard in Rutherglen, they also have a Chiltern vineyard planted by the family in the 1990s that is home to their Shiraz and Reginald’s distillery that he created in the 1950s in Beverford.

On an international scale, elections have taken place or are to be held this year in a number of countries, including the Russian Federation, India, United States and United Kingdom.
These elections run by processes described as democratic are very different to what is experienced in Australia.
With his in-depth knowledge and experience Mr Cassidy’s oration will have many interesting insights with some challenging ideas for everyone to think about.
A long-running free community event for more than two decades, the Kerferd Oration has drawn an extraordinary range of influen-
tial speakers to Beechworth with Mr Cassidy delivering the 22nd Oration.
The annual event’s aim is to bring the community together to challenge thinking, foster discussion around an important topic and promote active citizenship.
The Kerferd Oration is a community event first held in 2003 to commemorate the
150th anniversary of the naming of Beechworth. Don’t miss the chance to be part of what will be an engaging community event and have your questions answered by Mr Cassidy in a Q&A session following the conclusion of his oration. The event starts at 11am and will also be live streamed at www.kerferd.org.
