WOMEN from all walks of life know breast cancer does not discriminate, affecting as many as one in eight Australian women before the age of 85. And Wangaratta’s Donna Robinson is one of the countless women tirelessly fighting her diagnosis every day. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2016, and within two weeks had undergone single mastectomy surgery. This was followed with six rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation, and she continues to have treatment while working full time. She said her friends, work colleagues, soccer club friends and community around her have been an invaluable source of support. “You start to realise how much you impact on others,” Donna said. “I’ve been very well supported,” noting that living with the illness had helped her discover her own personal strengths. “I just didn’t realise how resilient and strong I am. “I’ve been very open and honest about my journey.” Donna said her mantra while dealing with cancer has been “take the path of least regret”, trying to plan ahead and make the best possible choices for her health, and she is planning on a second single mastectomy and reconstruction to reduce future risk. She is among the crowds of locals looking forward to this year’s Wangaratta Mother’s Day Classic event, to take place at Apex Park on Sunday, May 14. “I think it’s a great way to get people together in the community,” she said of the event. “And it’s going out and doing something physical. continued page |
