WOMEN from all walks of life know breast cancer does not discriminate, affecting as many as one in eight Australian women before the age of 85. And Wangaratta’s Donna Robinson is one of the countless women tirelessly fighting her diagnosis every day. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2016, and within two weeks had undergone single mastectomy surgery. This was followed with six rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation, and she continues to have treatment while working full time. She said her friends, work colleagues, soccer club friends and community around her have been an invaluable source of support. “You start to realise how much you impact on others,” Donna said. “I’ve been very well supported,” noting that living with the illness had helped her discover her own personal strengths. “I just didn’t realise how resilient and strong I am. “I’ve been very open and honest about my journey.” Donna said her mantra while dealing with cancer has been “take the path of least regret”, trying to plan ahead and make the best possible choices for her health, and she is planning on a second single mastectomy and reconstruction to reduce future risk. She is among the crowds of locals looking forward to this year’s Wangaratta Mother’s Day Classic event, to take place at Apex Park on Sunday, May 14. “I think it’s a great way to get people together in the community,” she said of the event. “And it’s going out and doing something physical. continued page |

Don’t get scammed by dodgy internet pop-ups THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is warning people to watch out for dodgy internet pop-up windows claiming there are viruses or other seemingly nasty tech problems affecting their computer. Known as remote access scams, these pop-up windows are used as a ploy to get unsuspecting victims to call a fake support line – usually a 1800 number. The scammer will then ask for remote access to their victim’s computer to ‘find out what the problem is’. “Once a scammer has remote access to your computer they can install malicious software, steal your personal data, con you into paying for a ‘service’ of your PC, or sell you unnecessary software to fix a problem that doesn’t exist,� ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said. “These scammers are very convincing and sound like they’re the real deal when talking about tech issues. “The pop-ups they create to lure people in look legitimate and are often made to imitate trusted websites for brands like Microsoft and Apple.� Scamwatch has already received an average of 300 reports a month about this scam in 2017, with more than $41,000 lost in total. Australians aged 45+ are most likely to encounter and lose money to this scam. “These pop-ups can often seemingly freeze your computer

ONLINE: Exercise caution when browsing the internet. and clicking the close button on your browser often doesn’t work. “This tricks people into thinking there really is a problem and calling the fake support line for help. “Your first and best line of defence against this scam is to not call that number and close the popup if possible,� Ms Rickard said. Affected users can close the pop up manually through Windows Task Manager (for PC users) or by using the Activity Monitor (for Mac users). If this fails to work, they can also shut down and restart their computer. “If you do call the number never give a stranger—no matter how legitimate they sound—remote access to your computer,� Ms Rickard said. “If you think you’ve been caught by this scam, call your bank immediately and let them know
what happened to protect your personal bank and/or credit card details. If your credit card was charged for sham software or servicing, you can try to get your money back.� Ms Rickard also urged consumers to read the ACCC’s Little Black Book of Scams publication. “A person’s best protection against scams is awareness and education. The Little Black Book of Scams contains important information about how to spot and avoid scams, to help keep you one step ahead of scammers,� Ms Rickard said. “The ACCC recently updated this publication to include important new trends we’re seeing from scammers, including in regards to remote access scams.� The Little Black Book of Scams is available from the ACCC website at www.accc.gov.au.
AUTUMN is a time of colour and change in the garden. With the days becoming shorter and the temperature cooling down, spectacular colour changes take place in the leaves of many deciduous trees and shrubs. One of the most beautiful is the Chinese tallow tree. This deciduous ornamental tree, was botanically known as Sapium sebiferum, but has had a name change and is now known as Triadica sebifera. It features stunning autumn colours, with the leaves changing from green to ruby red, yellow, orange, pink and purple, before eventually dropping. In spring, the newly emerging leaves have a reddish tinge, and in summer, greenish yellow flower spikes appear on the tips of the branches. Seed capsules develop and ripen during autumn. Originating in China, it has a long history of its chalky white seeds being harvested and processed to extract wax, which was used to make candles and soap. Hence, the common name, Chinese tallow tree. The Latin names “sebiferum� and “sebifera� mean wax-bearing. It is now a source of oil for the biofuel industry. In the southern states of

Australia, the Chinese tallow tree is grown as an impressive ornamental with long drooping branches and heart shaped leaves. They grow to around 8 metres tall with a spread of 4 - 5 metres. Chinese tallow trees grow in any well drained soils, in full sun to partial shade. They are drought tolerant when established but need regular watering and protection from heavy frosts while young. They have no pest or disease problems and need little or no pruning as they develop a natural rounded shape when mature. Chinese tallow trees grow easily from seed but can sucker. In parts of NSW and Queensland they have been declared an environmental weed. But down south they are very much desired. Plants for sale are grown from seed and the colour of their autumn display can vary greatly. To make sure you know how your tree will perform, buy one in colour now. Happy gardening.

Information on the calving process AS many beef and dairy producers would know, it is not unusual to encounter calving problems (dystocia) especially at this time of year. The most common cause of dystocia in cattle is in heifers with an oversized calf and inadequate sized birth canal. Other causes can be divided into calf problems (breech presentation, foot or leg turned back, neck flexion etc) and/or the cow problems (over-fat, vaginal prolapse, uterine inertia, uterine torsion etc). Labour can be divided into three distinct stages: - Stage 1 is the preparation stage where the calf gets into position ready for birth. During this stage the cow might start to appear uncomfortable and display symptoms of mild colic and walk with her tail up. The first stage typically lasts up to six hours in mature cows and up to 24 hours in heifers. - Stage 2 begins with rupture of the amniotic sac (waters break) followed by delivery of the calf. The calf is normally delivered front
first with its head placed on top of the extended forelimbs. In mature cows the second stage usually lasts 30-50 minutes but anything up until two hours is considered normal. It often takes a little longer in heifers due to dilation of the birth canal and anything up until four hours is considered normal. - Stage 3 the final stage, is the passing of the foetal membranes which may take up to three hours to pass – anything over 12 hours is abnormal. If attempting to assist a cow with delivery there are a few golden rules to follow: 1. The first is cleanliness – always ensure that your hands, arms and the cow’s vulva are clean. 2. The second is lubrication – use lots of lube and more – obstetric lube is ideal. This eases delivery of the calf and minimises trauma to the cow’s birth canal. 3. Use a 10 minute rule – if you have made no progress after 10 minutes then try a different approach or stop and call for veterinary assistance – struggling for another half an hour is only going to cause more problems.

Never attempt to pull a calf with a bent leg or head turn back without first correcting its posture – again if no progress is made after 10 minutes – try a different approach or call for assistance. 5. As far as pulling power is concerned – the general rule of thumb is to never pull more than the strength of three adult men to prevent trauma to the birth canal and/or fracturing the limbs of the calf. After the calf is delivered – check the cow’s birth canal to ensure there is no tearing or excessive bleeding. See that the calf gets at least two litres of colostrum in the first two hours after birth. “It highlights women who are so important to us.” Donna said that while participating in the event, she would be reflecting not only on her own journey, but on colleagues that have also been diagnosed with cancer. Also lacing up their runners for the Mother’s Day Classic are local mother and daughter Yvonne and Lizzie Richards. Yvonne was 52 when she received her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015, and was surrounded by the support of her family when she underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and reconstruction. Yvonne said she “took a rather practical approach” to her diagnosis, and the hardest part was sitting the family down and telling them about it. “It’s a hard thing, for a woman to tell people that you have breast cancer,” she admitted. “Everyone in life has hurdles to cross, it’s how you jump those hurdles.” Lizzie said her reaction was “shock, more than anything, and trying to figure
out the best way to support mum”. Yvonne said that while she was sick, she had amazing support from not only her family and friends, but the breast care nurses at Northeast Health Wangaratta. “In the country, there’s a lot more community support,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” Yvonne said the classic was a valuable community event. “We really need people to get out and take part, it doesn’t matter how you do it,” she said. The Mother’s Day Classic event, which aims to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, is on Sunday, May 14 from 7.30am. You can run or walk four kilometres, or run eight kilometres. Online entries can be taken up to 11.59pm on Wednesday, May 10, and there are adult, child/concession, and family entries available (on the day entries at a higher rate). Murray cod fishing unpredictable

THE unpredictable nature of autumn Murray cod fishing has continued over the last week with some anglers catching some nice Murray cod while others have caught none. I had a great day cod fishing in Wangaratta with Brett Corker last Monday, and yet just before Easter I had a day where not a single fish was seen. My success last week came during the middle of the day, using a full size Wilson Slickback lure in bright green colour. I would give the lure a few sharp cranks to get it down quickly, and then slow my lure retrieve right down to the slowest retrieve possible. I caught three Murray cod in a couple of hours. All three cod hit the lure quite softly and put up little fight, most likely due to their metabolism being slower as a result of the cooler water. Good numbers of redfin continue to be caught in Lake Buffalo. It too has been a little bit hit and miss. The trick is to keep moving around until you locate a school of fish, and then stay there. Redfin like to hunt and feed in schools, and if you do not find a school, you may not catch a fish. I have had a few mixed reports from Lake William Hovell - my dad fished up there with his neighbour

Rosemary lamb skewers and carrot turnip salad

Rutherglen Congregational Church, 1877 RUTHERGLEN’S congregational community, fired up by their pastor, the Rev JB Gribble, were determined to have their own church, their services having been conducted in the Town Hall. The very persuasive Rev Gribble, who later in Jerilderie would persuade Ned Kelly to force Steve Hart to return his watch during the gang’s raid on the town, got the congregation motivated, and on April 26, 1877, the foundation stone of the new church was laid.
This recipe, courtesy of Sandy Chan, Accredited Practising Dietitian, serves two and is one of many recipes included in the Smart Eating For a Healthier You section of the Dietitian Association of Australia’s website at www.daa.asn.au. Method Preheat griddle pan or fry pan to medium–high heat. Combine minced lamb with chopped rosemary leaves and garlic. Place carrot and turnip in a saucepan of cold water and bring it to the boil. Turn down to a simmer and cook for five minutes or until just tender. Drain, then slice the carrot in half and the turnip in quarters. Combine white wine vinegar, olive oil, rose water and pistachios in a bowl for the dressing. To assemble, place three rosemary lamb skewers on one side. Put yoghurt on the other side of the plate, then add carrot turnip salad on top. Dress the salad with rose water pistachio dressing.

How to nail common temp interview questions
A
pproach an interview for a temporary assignment or contract as you would for a permanent job and you’re doomed to fail. That’s according to the recruiting experts at Hays, who say you must emphasise your adaptability, flexibility and, above all, skills match when interviewing for a non-ongoing role. Nick Deligiannis, Managing Director of Hays in Australia & New Zealand, says interviews are no longer the sole domain of the permanent recruitment process. “Many of today’s employers want to interview a temporary or contract worker before signing a contract,� he says. “But these interviews differ from those conducted for a permanent job. “While they’re usually not as long, they are heavily focused on your skills. “There’s no room for growth and development in a temporary assignment so you must prove you’ll successfully and immediately fill the organisation’s skill gap.� According to Hays, typical interview questions for a temporary assignment or contract include: Why are you interested in this assignment? Before the interview ask for a copy of the job description or, if one isn’t available, ask your recruiter what specifically is required and what you’ll be doing in the role. You’ll then be able to answer this question by demonstrating how the assignment aligns with your expertise and long-term career goals. THERE will be 10 million driverless cars on the road by the year 2020, according to predictions made by David Galland, managing editor of Garret/Galland Research. Galland also estimates that by 2030, one in four cars will be driverless, with the technology being widely adopted and accepted by the greater community. If that sounds far fetched, David Galland would disagree as he believes his predictions are actually toward the conservative end of the spectrum. He bases this theory on several factors. Firstly, the sheer amount of funding and research being pumped into driverless technology is huge, with Google, Apple, Tesla and Uber among many others championing the sector. Secondly, driverless technology is already at a very advanced stage, with many models (including Google’s famous Waymo model) already having hit the roads and transporting their happy passengers. Lastly, Galland also cites research that shows how individuals and communities have become far quicker to adopt and accept technological breakthroughs (it took about 50 years for electricity to be adopted by 60 per cent of U.S. households, while it only took about five years for smartphones to reach the same penetration). The implications of this will be immense for a number of sectors, to say the least. Car manufacturers When the first models of self-

In the early days, there will still be a market for manually driven cars, obviously. The first self-driving cars will be expensive, and the price point will be higher than many people could justifiably afford, but the price will of course drop as the market becomes more saturated, ensuring that car manufacturers will be faced with a ‘keep-up-or-die’ scenario. In addition, when people will have the ability to phone and order a self driving Uber car, vehicle
ownership may well become a thing of the past for many (the day I personally can afford to not own a car, I’ll be a happy clam, honestly). Insurance companies Data so far indicates that (contrary to what some might believe) the widespread introduction of self-driving vehicles will reduce the number of traffic accidents by a whopping 90 per cent. This is obviously an enormous safety benefit to everybody, but it will certainly force insurance companies to re-examine and redefine personal car insurance.
Human transport companies While driverless cars will ensure personal transport will be an immensely profitable enterprise, small businesses will almost certainly take a massive hit from big companies, to say nothing of the currently human drivers who’ll almost certainly be out of a job. Parking Who enjoys the experience of driving your car into a city, trying to find a parking space, and then feeding the meter? Nobody, that’s who. Driverless taxis will of course do away with that particularly onerous
task, which will likely eat into council revenues significantly. That said, if council’s own or manage a fleet of driverless vehicles for their municipality, they could source revenue by charging a fee for use. All told, driverless vehicles are likely to cause the biggest change to our societies since the advent of the internet, with far-reaching consequences for all sorts of individuals and businesses. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds and what sort of impact it will have on places like North East Victoria.
