The origin of the name Phillipson

By BELINDA HARRISON THE name Phillipson is well known in Wangaratta with the street in particular being the cause of frustration and plenty of discussion late last year with its bicycle safety ‘improvements’. However, few people know how the street - which was first known as Boundary Road - came to get its name so, as January 26 marks the death of Mr George Phillipson in 1913 ay in History sto y (as per our This Day

piece) it seemed a good time to share the knowledge of the man who gives the longest street in Wangaratta its name. The Ovens and Murray Advertiser newspaper on Wednesday, January 29, 1913 issued an excellent account of the man and his achievements as follows: Death of Mr. G. Phillipson One of the best known residents of the North-Eastern district, Mr George Phillipson, JP, died on Sunday, at his reside dence, ‘Weirside’ Wangaratta.

For some time past Mr Phillipson had been in indifferent health; but as recently as last month he conducted a sale of land at Beechworth on account of Miss Trim. This ended his career as an auctioneer, as Mr Phillipson had decided on retiring, and his license expired that day31st December. On his return to Wangaratta he was taken ill, and although he showed signs of improvement, this was not maintained,

and he passed peacefully away at 11.40am on Sunday. The late Mr Phillipson was born at Hexham, Northumberland on 20th June 1843, and was thus within a few months of 70 years of age. When only 11 years of age - on 24th June 1854 - Mr Phillipson left England with his parents for Australia in the ship Oracle and landed in Melbourne on September 15th of the same year, the voyage occupying 84 days.

Curiously enough the first place the family went to after being in Melbourne a short time was the town of Hexham, on the Hunter River, in New South Wales. Here they remained till 1856, when they left for Beechworth, putting up at the Commercial Hotel, where Mr Phillipson conducted his last sale. For a short while he lived at the Woodshed, and ultimately the family went to Milawa, where Mr Phillipson

settled on a farm with his father and mother. In 1874, after disposing of the farm, Mr Phillipson proceeded to Melbourne, but city life had no attractions for him and he only remained there six months, returning to Wangaratta, where he engaged in business pursuits as a flour miller. This he carried on till 1878, when he took out an auctioneer’s license, which he held continuously till 31st December last.
