by KYLIE WILSON IT’S not every day community musicians get the chance to show off their chops alongside a high profile rock band – but that is exactly what is happening during this year’s Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues.

An ensemble of sax and brass performers of all walks of life from the local community have been steadily rehearsing to form the Horns of Death, which will play with Spiderbait at the blue marquee during next month’s festival.

Many of the community members, such as Emma Jones, have an enduring passion for music.

Holding her intricately decorated, 22 year

old alto saxophone, Emma explained she first got into music because of her father’s love of playing guitar, and said the jazz festival also contributed to her love of music.

Her interest continued through the friends she made and the influence of her teachers, including Jenny O’Brien.

“Wang has a long and proud tradition of excellent music teachers – we punch well above our weight, and have done for a long time,” Emma remarked.

Its common name is derived from the story that when touched or moved, drops of nectar fall from the owers like tears.

It is also known as the “friendship plantâ€?, because it is easy to split or divide and share amongst friends and fellow gardeners. €őÍÍħǛŀÇ? ŇÍÊğŀÇ? Ä‹ĂŠĹ€Ç? Ĺ‡Ä­Ĺ‘Ä Ä‹ĆźÇ? Ä&#x;ÍÊŇċÍğÇ? Grass seed problems THE lawn mowers are out and the grass is growing!

Unfortunately certain grass types bring pesky grass seeds which can cause a number of problems for our pets (not to mention getting stuck in our socks!).

Seeds can penetrate the body anywhere and this can cause a range of symptoms.

Most commonly, we see seeds in the eyes and ears.

This will present with sudden discomfort such as a closed painful eye or shaking of the head and head tilt if they are in the ear.

Another common area grass seeds enter is in between the toes.

This will cause painful swelling and sometimes discharge from the swelling.

In most cases treating and removing the seeds is fairly straight forward but usually requires sedation due to the pain associated (as you can imagine the sharp seeds can cause a lot of discomfort on the way in and out!).

with Felicity Miller, Veterinarian In more serious cases grass seeds can penetrate the skin and enter the chest or belly or even be inhaled into the lungs.

This can cause severe illness that can be difficult to treat and may require specialist referral.

Unfortunately, besides avoiding long grass (which is a good idea given the snakes are out too!), there is not a lot you can do to avoid the grass seeds.

If you are in an area of high risk, daily checks of the coat and between the toes to pull out any seeds attached to the hair and trimming the hair on the feet can reduce the likelihood a seed will penetrate.

If you find any swellings on your pet’s body or notice any symptoms mentioned above we recommend you contact your veterinarian as prompt treatment will minimise the risk of secondary issues such as infection.

Jazzaratta member Ben Thomas, who has been playing the trumpet for 24 years, says the performance will be a big thrill.

“Their album Ivy and the Big Apples made a lasting impression on me.

“Adam is to be highly commended for facilitating such an event...it will be remembered by the Horns of Death players for many years.

“It’s especially a valuable experience for the younger players, who have embraced the opportunity.”

Ben has been immersed in trumpet playing from a young age, stemming from his father who first introduced him to the instrument, and has performed with not only Jazzaratta, but also bands The Brass Razoos and Sweet Buzz.

He said he loves performing.

Music also plays a major role in the life of fellow Jazzaratta member Callum Morrison, who has played bass trombone since his high school days in Alexandra and has also played in the Benalla Rose City Town Band.

“It does not matter how tired you are, you just can’t help but feel better and it is great spending time with other musicians,” he said.

Adam Simmons, one of the group of co-artistic directors of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, who is coordinating the performance, has long had a connection to Spiderbait.

He played in the original Horns of Death ensemble and has worked on various projects with each member of the band.

“We were young, had mutual friends and they needed a fill-in player for a few shows,” Adam said.

“I liked their down-to-earth attitude

and I don’t feel that’s changed at all, even if we are all older and hopefully a little wiser.”

A musician proficient in playing a range of saxophones and other wind/ brass instruments, Adam said the rehearsals with local members of the ensemble (community workshops have been funded by Regional Arts Victoria) are going well.

“There is a good buzz amongst the group and I’m excited by how the the sound is getting bigger and bolder each rehearsal,” he said, adding that the band itself is also looking forward to the performance.

“Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues has always provided scope for artists to try things and Spiderbait have never really toed the line, so it’s actually a great match.”

He said he loved being involved with live performance.

“There is something special about experiencing something together, whether as a performer or listener.

“But part of it is that in live performance there is always the chance things might not go as planned and in that space is where the excitement comes from.”

Spiderbait will be performing with the Horns of Death at the Merriwa Park Blues Marquee during the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, with the performance taking place on Sunday, November 5 from 7.15-8pm.

He caught (and released) two banjo sharks, which were 73 and 98cm in size, using pilchards for bait at Warrnambool’s breakwater.

9 ◆ YELLOW GOLD: Adam Meadows trolled this nice 49cm yellowbelly on a Halco diving lure from his kayak in Lake Nillahcootie last week.

That’s where this warmer weather kicks in.

As we start to see longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures, the yellowbelly fishing in both of these lakes should be so good that anybody can catch them - even a 10 armed shearer in the middle of July.

Speaking of sheep, what do you call a sheep under water? A sub-merino.

Anyhow back to the job at hand and at the moment, the reports that I have had from Lake Hume are that the yellowbelly have been caught on wide body McGrath lures with a few redfin and trout also being picked up.

In Lake Nillahcootie it has been a Halco diving lure that has been bringing home the bacon.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

FINALLY spring appears to have arrived.

The cold fronts are short lived and the warmers days are more frequent.

Why is this so good? Because the fish are about to go nuts.

Last week my wife and I took the kids for a drive around the region.

We took photos, and went fishing and swimming.

I caught trout in a couple of tributaries of both the Ovens and King rivers.

On both occasions I was using a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic in black and gold colour.

So the streams are still fishing well.

We stopped at Lake Kerford near Beechworth for an hour where I managed to catch two or three small redfin while my wife took some wildlife photos.

This was no surprise as I have received quite a few decent reports of redfin as well as yellowbelly being caught in Lake Sambell in Beechworth itself recently.

Once again my redfin were caught on a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic, this time in the bright ‘orange spawn’ colour.

I love bright colours when I am fishing for redfin and natural colours for trout.

I have had one report of slow fishing in Lake Eildon, while I have had reports of yellowbelly being caught in Lake Nillahcootie and Lake Hume.

In both lakes, the yellowbelly fishing has been ticking over, but not going crazy.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY 1904 WANGARATTA was awarded a significant honour when the world’s most famous concert pianist of the day, Ignace Paderewski, allowed himself to be diverted from his tour of Australia to play a one night engagement in Wangaratta.

It happened because Wangaratta doctor, Dr Boyes, knew the man organising the concert tour, and managed to persuade the performance to visit Wangaratta with the promise of generous and appreciative audiences.

Honey and banana soufflé THIS recipe was recently released by Australian Eggs to mark World Egg Day, which took place on October 13.

Prepare four ramekins by brushing them with melted butter all the way to the rims and then dust with caster sugar. Shake out any excess sugar.

Blend the banana, honey and egg yolk in a small food processor till it forms a smooth mixture. Pour this mixture into a mixing bowl.

Using either a hand-held mixer or a stand mixer, whisk the egg whites in a clean, dry bowl till they’re foamy. Add the caster sugar and whisk till stiff peaks form.

Spoon one third of the egg whites into the banana

mixture and gently fold through till combined. Repeat with the rest of the egg whites until everything is just combined.

Divide the mixture between the ramekins and place them on a baking tray. Smooth out the tops of the mixture with a knife and run your finger around the inside rim of each ramekin.

Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes or till the souffles have risen and are golden brown on top. Dust with icing sugar and a place a dollop of cream on top and serve immediately.

Vacancies exist in the following areas for suitably skilled people to join Brown Brothers for the 2018 Vintage. CELLAR HANDS: Responsibilities include a wide range of basic winery processing duties so experience in working with pumps and other winery equipment will be an advantage. Good health is essential, as much of the work is physically demanding, requiring an excellent level of ďŹ tness. Good hygiene, house-keeping and safety are also essential.

FORKLIFT OPER ATORS: There are some speciďŹ c roles for forklift operators so a License to Perform High Risk Work (forklift license) and at least 12 months forklift driving experience is essential to be considered for these roles.

LABOR ATORY ASSISTANTS: Responsibilities include routine sampling and analysis, testing of grape samples and maintaining laboratory records. Good hygiene, house-keeping and safety are essential. Previous experience in a laboratory or Year 12 chemistry study would be an advantage.

To be successful in any of these positions, you must be able to work as part of a team, however there is an expectation that you can work independently in various situations.

with Chris Febvre, GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ FORWARD THINKER: Perhaps most famous for his paintings, Leonardo da Vinci - like other ‘Renaissance Men’ was a true polymath who dabbled in a variety of intellectual pursuits.

The marvellous inventions of Leonardo da Vinci LEONARDO di ser Piero da Vinci.

Of all the great figures in history, he, perhaps above all others, has been a source of inspiration and awe for countless people.

Perhaps most well known for his masterful painting, particularly the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, Da Vinci is also regarded by scholars to be a universal genius, for very good reason.

With areas of study and interest which included invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history, and cartography, da Vinci demonstrated a knowledge and understanding of the natural world that was decades, and in many instances, centuries beyond his contemporaries.

For this article I would like to

touch on a few of his greatest and most forward thinking inventions - some well known, while a few might surprise you.

The Helicopter (Aerial Screw) Although the first helicopter wasn’t built until the 1940’s, Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches of his aerial screw are thought to be the predecessor of the modern day chopper.

While he never actually built the machine, his drawings and notes give a full and detailed picture of how the machines would operate, and what it would be constructed of.

The device, just like the modern day helicopter, was designed to compress air to achieve flight, however, due to the weight constraints of the materials available at the time, scientists believe the device would not have been able to achieve flight.

Da Vinci was a big proponent of the screw shape for a variety of purposes, and used it in many of his designs for various inventions.

The Ideal City Not content simply with creating works of art and small scale inventions, da Vinci also put his mind to the task of conceptualising an ideal city.

Perhaps shocked by the plague that ravaged the city of Milan, killing a third of the city’s population, Leonardo wanted to design a city that would be more united, with greater communications, services and sanitation to prevent the future spread of such diseases.

His ideal city comprised of a series of canals that would be used for both commercial purposes, as well as a sewerage system.

The city was two-tiered, with the lower city being for tradesmen,

while the upper city being reserved for ‘gentlemen’.

Da Vinci also designed the city to have broad roads, in response to Milans narrow and clogged streets which likely contributed to the spread of the plague.

If one considers that many doctors during the time period were ‘treating’ plague victims by rubbing feces into buboes, it’s not hard to imagine that the advantages of Leonardo’s city sanitation methods simply would not have been understood by the overwhelming majority of people he lived and worked around.

Self-propelled Cart Before motorized vehicles were even a glimmer in someone’s eye, Leonardo da Vinci designed a selfpropelled cart capable of moving without being pushed. Among its other accomplishments, many

consider da Vinci self-propelled cart invention to be the world’s first robot.

The self-propelled cart was one of the many inventions that Leonardo created dealing with locomotion and transportation.

Leonardo’s cart was powered by coiled springs and it also featured steering and brake capabilities.

When the brake was released, the car would propel forward, and the steering was programmable to go either straight or at angles.

Da Vinci’s cart design was so ahead of its time that its exact workings confounded scholars until late in the 20th century.

But, in 2006, Italy’s Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence built a working model based on da Vinci’s design and, to the surprise of many, the cart actually worked.

Channel Chat SHOW: Food Safari Earth CHANNEL: SBS TIME: 8pm with ANITA MCPHERSON GREEN is the new black according to the fabulous Maeve O’Meara and the team behind the latest incarnation of the Food Safari series, which celebrates produce from the earth.

It seems we not only want our food to be fresh these days, we want to know exactly where it came from and meet everyone involved, from the farmer who grew it to the chef about to cook it.

Our increasingly health conscious community also has a social conscience, want-

ing to eat within earshot of where the veg was grown and know it lived a good life before being topped and tailed for the plate.

So we’ve come a long way since veg only came in threes with meat, and this series certainly makes plant food the hero ingredient, especially when in the hands of multicultural communities who know just what to do with it.

In episode one we watched some headspinning culinary magic with Sepia chef Martin Benn, creating a beetroot dish so complicated it would have left Heston Blumenthal gob-smacked, but it was Middle Eastern chef Joseph Abboud whose baba ganoush made charred eggplant mouthwateringly delicious.

As always, the series is thoroughly entertaining and a pleasure to watch, with the knowledgeable Maeve O’Meara sharing a natural rapport with each fascinating guest, who all seem genuinely pleased to
