FOCUS and hard work have not only meant a Commonwealth Games slot for Rutherglen’s Gaye Shale – they have helped shape her approach to life. The mother of three will represent Australia in July at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in women’s double trap shooting, and the journey to reach the elite sporting level has been a long one. “It was an ambition of mine to represent Australia in the Commonwealth Games since I was 19, and now it’s a reality,” the 45 year old said. “My children are really proud of me, and have been amazingly supportive of my hectic training and competition schedule. “I hope that in the example of my determination in pursuing my dreams, they will also strive to follow theirs.” Gaye lost her husband Jerome in a tragic farm accident in 2001, leaving her with the responsibility of a farm, a bakery and their three children. The couple met as teenagers and both competed as sporting shooters, and Jerome always encouraged his sweetheart to nurture her talent. “He said, ‘you’re good enough to make it in the Australian team’,” Gaye said. “He was a really good shot in his own right. “Both of us could have done really well.” continued page |
