A companion in the form of a dog named Lucky has helped former solider Joshua New get his life back on track.

Now Mr New is helping to spread the word about companion dogs through the “Young Diggers” program.

He joined the army 10 years ago, looking to establish a lifelong military career, but the effects of two long and one short deployments in Afghanistan in the years that followed soon took their toll.

“I never thought it would happen to me,” Mr New said.

“I was in a pretty bad way, I ended up in a mental health hospital in Melbourne.

“It was very challenging, especially when you lose something you thought was going to be a safe career option.

“You just want to shut yourself away from the world,” he said.

It was there, while recuperating, he came across an advertisement for the Young Diggers program, which provides assistance dogs to serving and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members who are dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD).

Now, with the love of his family, the support of his community, and the help of faithful assistance dog Lucky, he has a new lease on life.

AS I unload the nine bags of moo poo I am reminded of the marvellous benefits it will provide to the soil and plants.

Animal manure improves the soil by adding nutrients and humus. It improves drainage in heavy soils and moisture retention in sandy soils and improves microbial activity.

It can be dug through the soil or added on top of existing garden beds.

It is also a valuable ingredient for compost heaps or worm farms.

And it is a great way of recycling a waste product.

Manure contains the three basic elements needed for healthy plant growth; nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, referred to as N-P-K. Any manure is good for the soil, (except dog and cat, add that to the worm farm) provided it is well aged.

If fresh manure is used, dig it in well and let the soil rest for six weeks before planting.

Chook poo has the highest nutrient content, although hardly any organic matter.

The nutrients are quickly available to plants.

It is high in nitrogen, which is needed by leafy greens, and phosphorous.

It also contains calcium which acts as a clay breaker in heavy soils.

It must be well aged before planting as it may burn sensitive young roots.

Cow manure is all-purpose.

Although lower in nutrients, it is much higher in organic material and often used as a soil conditioner to improve soil structure.

It can be dug in or spread on top of garden beds.

Because of its low nitrogen content, it doesn’t burn the roots of plants.

It is also suitable for phosphoroussensitive native plants.

Sheep poo is fairly low in nutrients, although it does contain some nitrogen and potassium.

It is a good soil conditioner, adding organic matter to the soil. It won’t burn plants but can contain weed seeds.

Horse manure doesn’t contain a lot of nutrients, but has plenty of organic matter, especially if from a stable with straw.

Bagged manures can be bought from farm gates for a few dollars or commercial brands in nurseries and hardware stores.

Spread some poo on your garden.

“The idea is to get you back into society,” he said.

“Lucky has given me a bit of confidence to be able to get back out into the community.

“Some days I struggle, but I still get back out there.”

And he said the Mt Beauty community, where he has made his home with his family, have been very supportive and have been tireless fundraisers for Young Diggers.

He said having Lucky

by his side sparks many a conversation with members of the community, and helps him feel more confident when out and about – although he said Lucky can also help him move away from a situation if he starts feeling nervous.

“Lucky is a talking point on the street,” he said.

“And the community has put their hand out to help us.

“I like to think that it’s brought the community closer.”

With Anzac Day fast approaching, Mr New said it can be a challenging time of year for present and former soldiers alike, but that people should not be afraid to seek help if they are struggling with mental health.

“Anzac Day can be very challenging, a lot of emotions are brought forward,” he said.

“It comes out in different ways.

“It’s never too late to ask for help and get on the right path towards healing.”

Mr New’s fundraising campaign has also inspired border resident and fellow former soldier David Snell to do some fundraising of his own for the cause (he has a MyCause page at www. mycause.com.au/page/89179/ runfordiggers), including climbing Mt Bogong and later this year, Mt Kosciuszko.

In the past few months, he has been running a fundraising campaign to get enough funding to train 15 dogs for 15 diggers – a sum of $37,500 – and he is already well on the way to achieving that total, having raised around $16,800 to date. “(The fundraising) is giving me something to channel positive thoughts,” Mr New said.

A Young Diggers fundraising event, Sideshow Alley, is being held on April 11 at Avalon House, Harrietville, and more information is available by calling 0418 564768.

Myxomatosis MYXOMATOSIS (shortened to “myxo”) is a disease that affects rabbits and is caused by the myxoma virus.

The virus was introduced into Australia in 1950 in an attempt to control the wild rabbit population.

Symptoms of myxo include skin tumors or lumps around the body, conjunctivitis, swelling around the head and genitals, fever, listlessness decreased appetite, and in some cases blindness.

Rabbits can also get secondary infections such as pneumonia and they usually die within 14 days of contracting the disease.

Unfortunately there is no treatment for myxo, so most rabbits die or have to be euthanased.

The disease is spread by direct contact with an affected animal or by being bitten by fleas or mosquitoes that have fed on an infected rabbit.

In other countries rabbits can

be vaccinated to prevent myxo but in Australia the vaccine is unavailable because if pet rabbits were vaccinated they could pass on immunity to the wild rabbit population.

The best option is to try and prevent a pet rabbit from contracting the disease by protecting them from mosquitoes, fleas and contact with wild rabbits, in mosquito season rabbits can be housed in mosquito proofed cages or be housed indoors.

If you suspect your pet rabbit has developed myxo your vet should be consulted.

THE cooler weather over the last few weeks has seen some great changes to the fishing across North East Victoria.

Murray cod fishing reports are becoming more and more infrequent as trout reports have begun to pick up.

Reports of redfin being caught are also on the improve with two reports in the last week from Lake Buffalo.

One report was of several small redfin being caught off the bank along the western

edge of the lake where it is easily accessible from the main Buffalo River Road.

The small redfin were caught casting soft plastics and bladed spinners into the lake while walking along the bank.

John Condolous from Coburg emailed me on Sunday and said that he had landed around a dozen or so redfin in Lake Buffalo on Friday.

John was up to go duck shooting with his father in-law but was fishing on the Friday before duck opening.

He trolled his redfin along the eastern edge of the lake close to the submerged river course.

John said he kept two redfin and the rest were too small.

The two he kept were around 25-30cm in length and were trolled on 50mm AC invaders which dive down very deep.

I have also heard on the grapevine that both the upper Ovens River upstream of Bright and the Mitta Mitta River upstream of Eskdale are both fishing quite well for trout at the moment with bladed spinners accounting for most fish in both waterways.

The word from the Kiewa River is that trout numbers are low, however, a few are being caught by persistent anglers close to Mt Beauty.

Can I have the money or not

But when Ella’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family.

SO Mr Hockey wants all the young people to be allowed to access their superannuation to purchase a home.

But he has been championing for a long time that as we age we will need to ensure we have sufficient resources to keep ourselves, as the government will have run out of money.

Those he wishes to help now will certainly not have the nest egg that will be required to keep themselves in comfort come retirement.

It appears to me that not enough thought has been given to this proposition and the NSW Labor leader Luke Foley is even suggesting that to improve affordability, borrowers be allowed to pay off the stamp duty on their purchase over five years.

Surely if they cannot afford to pay the stamp duty upfront, how will they ever be able to afford to repay a loan for a home?

But I wonder if the time would not be right to give home owners a credit for stamp duty they pay on their first home toward the second purchase as stamp duty can be a burden each time they purchase a home.

Some commentators are saying it is a con job and will do nothing but push up prices and help vendors rather than those who need the help.

The economics of housing affordability is simple.

Sometimes housing can be difficult to afford just because interest rates are way too high.

But with inflation well under control, as has been the case since the mid 1990’s, and interest rates are at the lowest for as long as I can remember.

Mortgage interest rates are abnormally low but of course they will not stay there forever.

So if interest rates aren’t the problem, the other factor must be house prices. In a market economy such as Australia’s the price of anything, whether ordinary goods and services, or an asset such as a house – rises when demand exceeds supply.

To me it looks like inadequate growth in supply has been the real problem, caused I am sure by state and local governments placing too many legal obstacles and charges for developers seeking to build new estates on the edge of the city.

It is fine to provide medium and high density accommodation closer in the metropolitan area where they don’t have the hassle of travelling long distances to work, but of course the infrastructure is already in place.

Even the city in which I reside is attempting to find solutions to how to provide the infrastructure necessary to allow for new estates and is even looking at a developers contribution.

We are more conscious of the demand side of the housing market, represented by the high and ever increasing cost of purchasing a home by our children and other young people.

My daughter and her partner are just sitting there saving, watching some invisible reason push up house prices further and further out of their reach.

No single purchaser can move the market price, but the combined demand of all purchases can and does do just that.

And sure, if couples could get a bit of help with getting a greater deposit (by dipping into their super) they may just be able to afford to take on the mortgage.

Whilst I can see it could help the young, it also means all the other purchasers will also be better off, so what have you gained.

In my opinion “nothing”.

I did read where former prime minister Paul Keating has weighed into the debate by warning that if Australians are able to dip into their super savings at an early age, it would increase pressure on the federal government’s aged care budget by reducing the amount of income that could be drawn from older Australian’s super savings “The key to wealth accumulation in retirement savings is compound earnings”, Mr Keating said.

THIS time of the year sees lots of zucchinis, and if you blink, then the next time you look, they are out of control.

The question is what to do with them.

This pie is perfect for those over grown zucchini, it also adds to your vegetable diet for the kids.

The original recipe didn’t have cheese in it, but I think it’s nice scattered over the top.

It’s made by someone who knows when to put his foot down and when to apply the brakes.

Made from grapes grown on the Plunkett family vineyard in the Strathbogie Ranges, this golden drop has an inviting peach and buttery vanilla aroma.

There are rich flavors of yellow peach, melon and a touch of citrus fruit, rounded out with cashew nut creaminess and gentle, toasty oak.

It’s complex yet balanced enough to be enjoyed in a glass without any fiddly accompaniments.

Method (Rice Pie Shell) Cook rice in boiling salted water until tender; drain well.

Melt butter in pan, sauté peeled and finely- chopped onion until onion is transparent.

Add to rice with lightly beaten egg, salt pepper and curry powder. Mix well.

Press rice mixture in a greased 23 cm (9 inch) pie plate, covering base and sides.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Back to Wangaratta, 1951 MARCH 25, a Sunday, marked the opening of a week of festivities for Back to Wangaratta 1951.

From the opening event, a Massed Band Festival at the Showgrounds, to the final event the following Saturday, former residents of the town went back to their old schools, saw the booming residential developments, saw mushrooming industrial estates where only a few short years before had been open paddocks, and generally marvelled at the changes.

The festival closed the following Saturday with the crowning of the Wangaratta Memorial Town Hall Queen, won by the RSL candidate, Miss Norma Bohn.

Method (Filling) Melt butter in same saucepan as rice was cooked, cook chopped onions, thinly sliced celery and leek for 3 minutes or until softened.

Add sliced mushrooms, grated carrot and zucchini and cook for another 3-5 minutes, Season with salt and pepper.

Combine crème fraiche and flour with lightly beaten egg, mix well, and stir into vegetables.

Spoon into pie case.

Scatter over cheese.

Bake in a moderate oven 35 to 40 minutes.

Serve on its own or with a salad.

INGREDIENTS

IT makes me giggle every time I watch popular cooking shows and the contestants present “deconstructed” dishes for judging.

Desserts seem to be the favorite choice for the treatment, where yummy ingredients including biscuit crumbs, cream and fruit are tumbled into a wine glass and called “deconstructed” tarts.

Like the traditional Eton Mess with its broken meringue and strawberry mush, it’s less of a way to impress and more of a way to save the day when a proper recipe stuffs up.

Call me crazy but when I order a dish I like to think the chef has the skills to put the damn thing together, because it’s usually something too tricky or time consuming for me to pull off at home.

The construction part is the hard part and getting the balance right is a true skill.

As a Chardonnay fan I’m thrilled when I stumble across a version which has just the right amount of everything, and that’s true of Wine

A recent study commissioned by RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance shows that 50 per cent of parents rely on iPads and portable DVDs to keep their children entertained on family road trips.

The same study revealed that only five per cent of these families engage in quintessential road trip games such as I Spy. Eat more good fats – fish, nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, unheated oils.

Drink plenty of plain water to keep your wee clear.
