YOU only need to speak to Alpine Shire mayor Jan Vonarx for a few minutes to realise her passion for leadership and community. And in the lead up to International Women’s Day around the world, she said women should be proud of their achievements. “I think it’s very important women around the world are recognised,” she said, believing Australian women should also keep informed about the plight of those in other countries and cultures. “There are other countries in the world where women are second class citizens,” she said, reflecting on her life in Libya and Iran while her husband worked in the oil fields. Jan is a big believer in the importance of teamwork and community, dating from being involved in kindergarten committees and school council while raising her family, to becoming Alpine Shire mayor. “Working for the community gives one a fantastic sense of belonging and pride in helping others,” she said, noting her years as a Girl Guides Victoria leader and Hume region manager, as well as a former president of the Myrtleford and District Ratepayers Association. “Unfortunately, volunteers are becoming very scarce, and I urge the younger generation to become involved. continued page |
