And in the lead up to International Women’s Day around the world, she said women should be proud of their achievements. “I think it’s very important women around the world are recognised,” she said, believing Australian women should also keep informed about the plight of those in other countries and cultures. “There are other countries in the world where women are second class citizens,” she said, reflecting on her life in Libya and Iran while her husband worked in the oil fields. Jan is a big believer in the importance of teamwork and community, dating from being involved in kindergarten committees and school council while raising her family, to becoming Alpine Shire mayor. “Working for the community gives one a fantastic sense of belonging and pride in helping others,” she said, noting her years as a Girl Guides Victoria leader and Hume region manager, as well as a former president of the Myrtleford and District Ratepayers Association. “Unfortunately, volunteers are becoming very scarce, and I urge the younger generation to become involved. continued page |

What’s in your garden: At WDSS, We have a vegetable garden, an orchard, and other gardens around the school that allow the students to relax and explore plants and flowers. We aim to have a range of sensory plants that smell nice, have an interesting texture, look good and where appropriate taste good. What do you enjoy about gardening: I enjoy watching plants grow through the seasons, and sharing with students the wonders of the garden. We search for caterpillars and snails, and pick out beautiful leaves. Favorite plant/spot in your garden: I love Salvias. They give a wonderful display even in dry conditions. We have Salvias in most gardens around the school. Water saving/conservation tip: Group plants with similar water needs together, and water deeply rather than quickly. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Do a little often, and enjoy them a lot.

HEDGES bring a touch of class to a garden. Whether they are formal or informal, evergreen, feature colored foliage or flowers, they are a living screen, a growing fence. Besides being attractive, hedges offer some other features. They can be grown to create a visual and physical barrier, to hide something, provide some privacy or protection from wind. They can be grown along pathways and garden edges or even property boundaries. They can be used as dividers, creating separate garden rooms. The height and variety depends on the style of the garden. Traditional hedging plants like cypress and buxus are still very popular and used more in formal settings where the same variety is repeat planted. Formal hedges require regular trimming to maintain their shape. Informal hedges rely on the natural shape of the plant and do not need regular pruning, only the occasional tidy up. Flowering favorites are Sasanqua camellias with their stunning flower display in autumn and photinias which feature bright red new growth in spring followed by white flowers. Plumbago makes an excellent hedge, with white or blue flowers for most of the year. It can be pruned regularly or left to sprawl with the occasional trim. Native plants can also be grown as hedges.

Lillipillies are fast growing and feature pink purple foliage. Dodonaea viscosa, otherwise known as the purple hop bush is another fast growing plant featuring purple foliage; great when trying to establish a screen. Callistemon feature red, pink, yellow or white flowers through late spring and summer and only require pruning when flowering has finished. Westringia have grey blue foliage and white flowers. Pittosporums are another grey foliage plant suitable for formal or informal hedging. For a tropical look, nandina, otherwise known as sacred bamboo, is a care free option. It features red and green foliage throughout the year. Or try real bamboo. Advanced bamboo plants are available online and can be ordered at the appropriate height for an instant and impressive screen. Hedges can also be a mixture of plants intermingling with each other. There are no hard and fast rules so be creative and experiment. Happy gardening!

Superficial ulcers will usually heal fairly quickly, with a vet prescribing antibiotic ointment to prevent any further infection while healing takes place. Regular re-visits to the clinic will be required to monitor the eye during this time. Complicated or deep ulcers may require surgery to help the healing process, this sometimes requires referral to an eye specialist. Corneal ulcers can deteriorate quickly, so it is very important that you have your vet examine any eye problems early. Some medications can even make corneal ulcers worse, so it is not recommended to treat eye problems at home but rather consult with your local veterinarian. “I have lived in Myrtleford for the past 40 years, and this community has given me the opportunity of being involved in many areas, the people are great, and there are many friends you make while volunteering. “But I believe that we’re all equal, and it’s up to women to get out there and force the issues.” Jan was particularly keen to see more women represented on boards and councils, and encouraged them to make their voices heard and “stand up for what they believe in”. Barb Murdoch, who is deputy mayor of Indigo Shire and has also worked as a teacher and small business operator while raising her family, echoed Jan’s sentiment about the importance of community. “A few years ago I was discussing/arguing with a friend about the state of the world, when he challenged me to stand up for my convictions… heeding that call led me to being elected to Indigo Shire Council,” she said. “As a councillor I have learned that leadership is a shared responsibility and working in a team achieves far more than working on your own. “Leadership and success always involves listening to your communities’ ideas and concerns and acting on them, if possible. “I think International Women’s Day highlights the achievements of many women who have worked so hard for equal rights, as well as

THE cornea is the transparent shiny membrane which acts like a window for the front of the eyeball. A corneal ulcer occurs when there is damage to the layers of the cornea. These ulcers can range in severity from those just affecting the superficial layers, to ulcers which extend right through to the deepest layers of the cornea. Corneal ulcers can affect cats, dogs, horses and cattle. If left untreated, corneal ulcers can potentially cause the eye to rupture, leading to irreparable damage and blindness. The most common causes of corneal ulcers are due to traumatic injuries such as abrasions or cat scratches. Other causes include irritation from eyelid abnormalities, grass seeds, decreased tear production, problems with the eye blinking, or infectious causes. Corneal ulcers are painful, so signs to look out for are squinting, rubbing of the eyes, discharge from the eye, or the animal avoiding bright light. A veterinarian can diagnose corneal ulcers by closely examining the eye and with the use of special stains. Once a diagnosis of a corneal ulcer is made, the treatment will depend on the severity of the ulcer.

NICE CATCH: Alistair Sunderland is one of the most respectable young anglers I have ever shared a waterway with. He is pictured with his King River Murray cod caught recently on an Oar-Gee lure.
Murray cod back on the bite BANG ... just like that the Murray cod have come back on the bite, and in a big way. After the very slow January and start to February, the last couple of weeks have seen a red hot Murray cod bite in the Ovens and King rivers with reports coming in left, right and centre. I recently had the privilege of fishing the King River one evening with Alistair Sunderland. On Alistair’s first cast into the river a Murray cod of around 50cm long hit his lure. Very first cast ... unbelievable. About an hour later Alistair was on again. He hooked up onto a nice little Murray cod of around 40cm on a green colored Oar-Gee lure.
I have had reports of some larger Murray cod being caught in the far lower reaches of the Ovens River around Bundalong on surface lures. When I say larger, I am not talking monsters, I am talking 60-70cm, which is around 20cm bigger than the average fish that has been caught around Wangaratta recently. Meanwhile up in the hills the trout streams are dangerously low with a few of them dried up completely. I was up at Myhrree during the week and the middle creek is just a dry creek bed full of rocks, and the water coming down the 15 Mile Creek could probably fit through a three inch round pipe. I have been told the Rose River has dried up as well, which it often does in sections.

I did hear a second hand report of a few trout being caught between Bright and Harrietville last week on Metalhead soft plastic lures. Sorry to the folks looking for glowing trout reports, but that is the best I could do at this stage. With the cooler weather on our doorstep, hopefully we will get a bit of rain and a few more trout fishing reports will begin to filter in soon.

WITH ANITA McPHERSON This Gapsted Riesling is made from King Valley fruit and it has a rich, floral aroma which is now also quite toasty, and it has flavors of lime, apple and warm fig pudding. The wine finishes with a pleasant, citrus acidity which balances its complex and developing fruit flavors. It’s ideal with a goats cheese and caramelised onion tart, as is the Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng and Fiano which should be sampled too. Savoring a bottle of Riesling while watching others cycle away is definitely one of life’s great pleasures.

A pioneer radio station, 1925 THERE was great anticipation in Wangaratta and in the immediate district at the prospect of hearing the broadcast of the first radio station in the North East, 3WR. The great event was scheduled to occur at 8pm on February 25, 1925. The venue for the occasion was the Hellier home, in Rowan Street, on the site of the present day Church of Christ. When it came on the air it became the first licensed commercial radio station in country Australia, and soon after opening, it adopted the slogan, “The Voice of the North East”.
SWEET semolina filo pie or (Bougatsa) is a wonderful Greek cake, layers of buttered filo encase sweet semolina custard, which is baked into a golden flaky pie. Dusted with icing sugar and cinnamon, it’s the perfect accompaniment to, well, our crème fraiche. This recipe was taken from SBS recipes. Recipe ©2012 Maria Benardis Method Combine the sugar and milk in a medium-size saucepan. Place over a medium heat and bring to a simmer, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Stirring constantly, gradually add the semolina and a pinch of salt and cook for 3 minutes until the mixture thickens. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and the vanilla extract and stir to combine. Pour the mixture into a bowl, cover the surface with baking paper and allow cooling completely. Preheat oven to 200°C. Melt the remaining butter and set aside. Unroll the filo pastry and place between two clean tea towels on the bench top. Brush a 21 cm round, low-sided cake tin with butter. Brush a sheet of filo with butter and lay it in the tin with the edges overhanging. Repeat with another 9 sheets changing the angle slightly each time as you lay the filo into the tin (this creates an even edge of filo around the tin). Spoon the semolina custard evenly over the filo. Trim 10 sheets of filo into a square just

THERE is a theory going around that tourists these days no longer want to simply look at the places they are visiting, but want a “hands-on” experience. They’re no longer content to see and hear about the history of a region like a passive passer by, they want to say they’ve lived it, touched it and tasted it. If there is a mountain, it should be climbed, if there is a river, you should hurtle along it in a raft and if the pilgrims walked it centuries ago you should hike until your feet bleed too. It’s too bad if you were looking forward to a bit of relaxation on your holiday. I’m not suggesting everyone should be sun baking on the poop deck, but there’s nothing wrong with doing some passive wining and dining on a holiday. And there are so many places in the North East region like Gapsted Wines on the Great Alpine Road, where the views are beautiful and you can put your feet up and relax.

Lend me the money dad WITH house prices becoming higher by the day, should we oldies be looking at lending our children a deposit for their first home or let them keep renting? Before you start to think that, well if I say no then my son/daughter will think I am being stingy. But there are more things to lending your family the deposit for a home. You need to sit down with them and prepare a meaningful budget, impress on them they will have to make sacrifices and will they be able to cope when there is the patter of little feet. Are you likely to get it back, can they afford to be paying off a house loan and most importantly analyse your own financial situation as if the child defaults (and I know of many who have) can you afford to repay their loan without putting pressure on your own financial situation. And if you are going guarantor, you will need independent advice from a solicitor or an accountant; they will be able to explain your obligations and risks as a guarantor. But on a positive note, helping your kids buy in a nearby area can make a lot of sense for retirees. It will create a support network that will benefit both the kids and the parents. enough when lending to a family member is some sort of agreement which allows the parents’ obligation to be limited to a set amount of guarantee. This should allow the children to borrow
more and avoid mortgage insurance. Say the child wishes to buy a $500,000 home, but only has a $20,000 deposit, the bank can take part security over the parent’s home. As the child either pays down the loan, or the value of the property rises so the loan is only 80 per cent of the house’s value, the parents’ guarantee is then released. And of course with a legal document the parent would be able to charge interest to generate income. An interest rate of around four per cent cuts out the bank margin, which will help the child, but it’s also a better rate than retirees earn on a fixed deposit. Those of you on the pension will still have the loan treated as your asset, and you will be deemed to earn money on any interest you charge. However, if parents wish to pass on an inheritance to their children, support them by all means in the purchase of a house, which really means they receive their inheritance early.
