While she had been an avid Bingo player at Grey House and when she first moved into Rangeview, when Betty fell and broke her wrist, she was unable to knit, crochet or do much of anything for a time, so her daughter Kylie bought her a couple of colouring books and some Textas and suggested she pass the time that way.
Keeping busy at Rangeview
By BELINDA HARRISON
“She now goes through about two packets of Textas a week and she’s quite particular about the books I bring her in to colour,” Kylie said. “They have to interest her or she’ll make me take them away again.” When Betty was 17 she was a nurse at Sydney Royal Prince Albert Hospital, working two days on the ward and two days with the babies - which she loved. She then worked at the Adelyn Clothing Factory which was on the corner of Wodonga Place and Hovell Street in Albury where she made dresses. The factory had previously been in Olive Street and was known as the Alamac Clothing Factory from its establishment in 1943 until around 1945. At that time they were engaged in making drill trousers, drill berets and bandoleers for the defence force and approximately 60 women were employed in the factory. In July 1945 the Border Morning Mail reported that in the first 12 months of production “a quarter of a million articles of clothing and equipment have been manufactured for the Army and 100,000 for civilian requirements.” PUNCH: Betty Mitchell takes great pride in her colouring and pictures.
BETTY Mitchell had never spent much time colouring in or drawing in her younger years but now the 87 year olds’ room at Rangeview Private Nursing Home in Wangaratta is covered with her work. Betty entered Rangeview two years ago and found she was getting a bit bored as ‘there is only so much knitting and crocheting you can do’ and she was used to keeping busy.

They are covered all over with strong, sharp spines which are their only defence mechanism against predators.Thespines are made of keratin, the same substance that our fingernails are made of. They mostly eat ants and termites, but will also eat adult beetles, earthworms and the larvae of the Scarab beetle. Echidnas are most active in the lead up to their winter mating period.Echidnas live solitary lives but in breeding season, the female is popular and up to 10 males will follow her around for around a month. The female lays an egg in her pouch for 10 days before hatching a ‘puggle’ - a baby echidna.

NOT Just the Wife of the General Manager by Sally Warriner falls into the ‘Australian Outback’ genre and is one that, to some country people, can sometimes seem like a cliché, however Sally’s book has been well received so far and has even managed to entertain some who would not normally read the genre. The blurb is as follows: It was the 1970s and Sally was in her early 20s when she returned from a backpacking sojourn and hitchhiked to Australia’s far north. But instead of moving back to Canberra as planned, she stayed. After marrying a cattle station manager, Sally lived and worked with him on various stations until she was 50, ingraining herself into the lives of the characters who inhabited these isolated places. With wit and sass, Sally tells the story of how she was so much more than just a wife of a station manager (despite what some of the top end blokes thought).Among other things, she was a nurse dealing with local accidents, assisting the Flying Doctor Service and making emergency 400 km round trips through the outback with sick children, a mother bringing up several children, not all her own, a travel agent, a social secretary, a host and an organiser which included one of Kerry Packer’s New Year’s Eve parties. This is a story about adventure, resilience, the unexpected journeys we need to go on to find ourselves, and having the courage to do something for yourself.InSally’s words: “Life’s like that, fellas. You may spend a lifetime trying to find yourself but, at the end of the day, you’ve been there all along.”

A great example of this is ‘tinnitus’, which is any ringing in the ears or head noises that do not come from the externalWhenenvironment.asking clients about these symptoms, they will often use the word ‘tinnitus’ before we do. This shows that some of the groundwork to help clients understand our jargon has already been done. However, there is always more that we can do. Here are some terms you may hear in your audiology appointment, but not understand at first: Vertigo - the feeling of room spinning and loss of balance, giddiness; Tympanometry - an air-pressure test of middle ear function; Bone conduction test - when the headband sits behind the ear to play the sounds for the hearing test; Frequency - relates to the pitch of theHighsound;Frequency - high-pitched or squeaky sound; Low Frequency - low-pitched or deepDecibelsound;- unit of measurement for expressing the relative loudness of sounds;Cochlea - the hearing organ of the innerConductiveear; hearing loss - reduced ability to hear due to an issue in the outer or middle ear, reducing the volume of the sound reaching the inner ear; Sensorineural hearing loss - reduced ability to hear due to an issue in the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve. At Wangaratta Audiology, we try not to use jargon in our appointments without explaining the term first - for you to get the most out of your appointment, you need to understand us. DO you ever go into your health appointments and hear words that seem foreign or unknown to you? Medical ‘jargon’ can be difficult to understand, making the client/patient feel confused and making the clinician’s words hard to follow. But jargon does not have to be a bad thing.Ifwe work together to educate ourselves on these words, health appointments can become more beneficial and you as the client can get more out of yourForexperience.youraudiology appointments specifically, having a meaningful understanding of your hearing loss may equip you with the tools for better communication and allow you to ask the right questions and choose the solutions that are right for you. Some words which we as audiologists consider to be jargon are already known to our clients.

THE infant settlement of Chiltern was only months old when it was able to boast a newspaper of its own and a population of 7000. The Chiltern Standard was quick to begin a war of words with Beechworth.Oneofits earliest campaigns concerned Chiltern’s mail from Melbourne. How ridiculous, said the Standard, for the mail to be forced to go via Beechworth. How much more sensible it would be, it said, for the mail to come straight through Wangaratta. Within a year, it had changed its name to The Federal Standard, signalling an end to parochial thinking.

FLICKING on the telly, I found myself captivated by the final episodes of the reality series Alone; this one with participants attempting to survive 100 days alone in the Arctic. While the aim is to win a $1 million prize, it was clear the few remaining survivalists, now dazed and confused, were simply hellbent on proving they were in tune with nature. They’d built their own shelters and were staying alive by stoking the fire every hour and eating offal or the odd rat or rabbit they hadThetrapped.fishdiet had been infinitely more appealing, but when winter came, hacking through icy lakes to drop in a line when it was minus 30 - in only a few hours of daylight - was proving tricky. Hungry and frostbitten, they began to crave fat and carbohydrates - the kind we couch potatoes at home were tucking into while we watched. I pressed pause so I could cut up some cheese and salami and enjoy them on crackers with a glass of Delatite High Ground Shiraz. There’s an instant buzz from the vibrant aroma - bright, forest berries and ripe plum. The deep, crimson-coloured drop is smooth and easy to drink, with intense, long lasting flavours of blackberry and plum rounded out with the warmth of savoury oak and some black pepper. Made by a winery at the base of Mount Buller which specialises in cool climate wine, perhaps those bracing conditions really do bring out the best in us - they certainly do in the fruit. Might be time to put another log on the fire.

Betty worked in the mending room and remembers the trick the girls used to get the dye off their hands at the end of the “Weday.would use shaving cream,” she laughed.Atits height Adelyn employed around 400 staff members, most of whom were women and Betty proudly worked there until she married Christopher and they started their family. The couple lived at Buffalo River - just near Nug Nug - where their neighbours grew tobacco and she and Christopher raised cattle. As her family grew, Betty spent time babysitting her grandchildren and also worked in the kitchen as a ‘dishpig’ at what was then the Rusty Dog (now Paulies Corner) in Wangaratta. “I scrubbed so many pots and pans and plates,” Betty said. Betty’s room is alive with colour and there isn’t a wall or door that doesn’t have her creations covering it with Betty and Kylie estimating that she must have completed more than 400 since she started.“Ihaven’t put all of them up of course,” Betty said. “I have done some especially for other residents here and staff and now when I finish them, I put two pictures back to back and get them laminatedthey can be used as placemats. “I’ve got so many now that I have got them in a folder.” Betty doesn’t have a favourite kind theme of picture to colour but she does enjoy colouring koalas and giraffes, and she doesn’t conform to the ‘proper’ colours for some of the animals.

Variable conditions
THE long awaited prequel to the #1 New York Bestselling book We Were Liars is finally here. Family of Liars was published on May 4 and is a young adult novel aimed for ages 13 to 18. Lockhart is a masterful story-teller. She can skillfully dig into the characters’ feelings and personality. Her writing is beautiful and she is smart about what she reveals and when.InFamily of Liars, readers travel to the Sinclair family’s private island off the coast of Massachusetts, 27 years before the events in We Were Liars. In this book, we get a better look at the parents of the three liars. At the start, we see Caroline get persuaded to tell a story that only her sisters know about, to her 15yr old son’s ghost, Johnny. In the summer of 1985, Carrie tries to deal with the grief of her 10-yearold sister Rosemary’s drowning whose ghost starts visiting her. Bess (Elizabeth) and Penny (Penelope) are already moving on with their lives - flirting with boys, excited for summer, pretending nothing happened last year as well as her parents. Carrie also deals with a face surgery that reset the shape of her jaw, but soon she gets addicted to the pills that leave her unable to be hurt; the only reprieve from the pain of Rosemary’s death. Her uncle Dean comes for the summer along with Yardley, Carrie’s favourite cousin and best friend, and three surprise guests; George (Yardley’s boyfriend), Major and Pfeff Foreign feelings mixed with excitement arise as Carrie gets swept off her feet by Pfeff But things change quickly as Carrie sees herself caught in a web of lies, secrets and betrayal. Soon, she has to join the family and become an expert at lying and acting. This is an uncontrollable ride that won’t let you go until the very end. So get ready for the gripping, tragic, gut-wrenching, story that will take you through hard topics such as coping with death, substance abuse, secrets, andOverall, lies. I’d rate this book a 4.5 out of It5.kept all of my attention throughout and I could not put it down. The writing is superb and it is definitely a character driven story. Carrie’s story is one of secrets, grief, betrayal and guilt. She made decisions which had lots of Fairconsequences.warning:It’s a crier. Another warning: This book contains spoilers for We Were Liars. Family of Liars by E. Lockhart is a thrilling and twisty book that unearths emotions for a heart-wrenching story.
