Elly just loves the circus

By JORDAN DUURSMA
VOCALIST, dancer and ring-mistress, Elly Rowbotham, a women with many talents and many different hats, has been charming the Wangaratta crowds since the The Great Moscow Circus came to town.
The 20-year-old has been performing on stage as a dancer since she was three years old and ran away to join the circus at the beginning of the year to fulfil her lifelong dream of performing full time.
Elly said she’s grown up training in musical theatre, dance, acting and singing.
“I started dancing typical ballet and jazz at three years old in Brisbane, then I trained in every genre of dancing you can think of and following that I started singing lessons at six years old,” she said.
Elly said she found out about the job opening with The Great Moscow Circus through a Facebook advertisement.
“I saw the ad so I sent through my show reel and CV and went through the stages of the audition process and now I’m here performing,” she said.
“I love the adrenaline of performing and the feeling I get on stage, I love seeing the joy on the faces of the audience I think that’s what’s brings the spark to it for me.
“We have some exhilarating acts that will keep people on the edge of their seats.”
Hailing from Brisbane, Elly has spent the first six months of the year travelling and performing fulltime, a change she welcomed.

VET CORNER Sugar Gliders
What do they look like?
SUGAR Gliders live in the trees and glide between them using flaps of skin between their front and back legs.
Adults can weigh as little as 150 grams.
They are grey to brown with a prominent dark stripe over their foreheads and have prehensile tails which they use to grip on to branches.
Sugar gliders have a twin membrane that stretches from their little finger to their hind legs.
When fully stretched out in flight they act as a wing or a parachute enabling them to glide across open areas in the trees.
They have another use for these membrane wings.
When they forage they use them as pockets to collect food in to take back to their young.
Where are they found?
These small marsupials live in eastern and northern Australia and nest in tree hollows or nest boxes.
They are common in woodlands where
with Backyard Buddies
there are plenty of food sources and suitable nesting sites.
Fast facts:
1. Sugar Gliders will venture up to a kilometre through open country to reach other forests and other glider communities.
They are thought to commute along electricity lines and fences and stop off at any tree along the way.
A single tree left standing in a paddock or backyard can potentially provide a vital breeding link between one isolated glider colony and another.
2. If you have sugar gliders in your area, watch out for young gliders learning to fly around January.
After living in the pouch and then the nest for nearly four months, the youngsters are ready to spread their ‘wings’.

BEECHWORTH TREES
THE first serious attempt to plant shade trees along Beechworth Streets seems to have been made by W.T Soulby.
He planted a number of English elms on both sides of a property at the corner of Camp and Finch streets on this day in 1867.
There were 14 trees, planted 25 metres apart, and they stretched over 200 feet along Camp Street and a lesser distance along Finch Street.
The trees were provided with protection against wondering stock of all species, and Soulby christened his finished work ‘Elm Grove’.

Resorts welcome the largest snow dump of the season
THE largest snowfall of the season occurred last week creating great conditions on the slopes for all kinds of snow activity.
At Falls Creek, 78cms of fresh snow over the past week allowed them to open more lifts and terrain, including the Summit Chairlift for the first time this season.
“This opens up even more options for our guests with advanced skills and our black runs are groomed and ready,” Falls Creek’s marketing manager, Betony Pitcher said.
There are many activities to enjoy at Falls Creek including Twilight Tuesday and their weekly Fireworks Fiesta.
Mount Hotham also had
78cm of natural snowfall over the week and there are currently 63 open trails and 16 groomed trails opened.
This week, Mount Hotham will be hosting their Pirate Life Rail Jam, where you will get the change to watch Hotham’s best skiers and snowboarders battle it out for over $8000 in cash and prizes on July 27.
Next week also marks the starts of Hotham’s Women’s Ski Week from July 29 until August 2.
Mount Buller recently opened Southside earlier in the week, giving visitors four more lifts to explore.
On the mountain there is currently 57cm of natural snow.
Mount Buffalo is finally open for tobogganing after around 25cm of snowfall on July 20. Both Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley are open for tobogganing and all their snowshoe trails and cross country trails are open. Dinner Plain has also had extra snowfall, allowing them to open the Cobrunga Platter Ski Slope and the Peashooter Toboggan Slope.

Singer, dancer and ringmistress: Elly does it all
■ From page 1
“The transition into the circus lifestyle has been great, I have gone from working two jobs full-time which was hectic, to doing what I love,” she said.
“The circus lifestyle is so much more fun and I get more time to do things for myself.
“It doesn’t feel like work for me when I’m on stage because I love what I do, it’s been a really different change but a good one.”
Elly’s circus career has been fully supported by her family who travel from Brisbane to watch her perform whenever the circus sets up near an airport.
Elly said her family were instrumental in packing up her life and helping her join the circus at the beginning of the year.
The 20 year old’s career as a per-
former has put her on stage with the likes of Reece Mastin as a backup dancer, the theatre stage for musicals, and now charming crowds under the Big Top across the Australian countryside.
“The opportunity to travel has been great, we went to Hobart and in the circus, you get to travel to country towns that you wouldn’t usually visit on a holiday,” Elly said.
“Living, travelling and working with the same people is really fun, you get close with them, so it is like a second family and I’ve added some new brothers to my life.”
The ‘greatest show on Earth’ is designed for the entire family to enjoy with daytime and evening performances in Wangaratta until July 28.
Elly said the show is absolutely brilliant for all ages.
“Make sure to head down to the Wangaratta Showgrounds, some of the acts in the show you would never expect to see at a circus,” she said.
The Big Top will be set up at the rear of the Showgrounds Entertainment Precinct (the old rodeo ground) with entry via Golf Links Lane.
Don’t miss out on the chance to see Elly perform at The Great Moscow Circus with some of Australia’s top BMX and scooter riders, exciting trampoline, Russian Swing, the world’s best daredevil motorcycle cage riders, breathtaking aerial performances and much, much more.
