HEATHER Lane has always been drawn to books, reading and research. Relaxed in her Wangaratta home, she smiles at the memory of sitting in the kitchen of her childhood home with her father, and flicking for endless hours through a book on horses that she could not even read yet. “Strangely enough, I’ve always felt like I had to have books around me,” she said, mentioning that ancestors had bookstores in Germany and London. Her love of books, married with a thirst for knowledge and historical detective work, have made her into a tireless researcher of all types of history, particularly family research. But her latest endeavour has been influenced by her time as a nurse. She partnered up with Beechworth researcher Anne Hanson, to help reveal to the public, the history of nurses hailing from the area as part of the Burke Museum Beechworth exhibition, Red Capes and Suitcases – Indigo’s WWI Nurses. Heather said the role and status of nurses had changed many times over the course of recent history. Before the end of the 19th century, for examples, nursing was often part of the job description for prostitutes. continued page |
