Game of drones

THE feeling of freedom when flying model aeroplanes as a child has helped spark a lifelong passion for technology in Wangaratta’s Jay Davis.

Growing up on the family farm in Rennie, near Mulwala, Jay had an interest in technology from an early age, flying model aeroplanes as often as he could.

He recalled with a laugh that he had to repair the family computer to get himself out of trouble several times after managing to break it, which also helped him build his tech skills.

His expertise grew into his teens, when he made money building and selling computers, as well as being unofficial tech support for many of the people he knew.

Today, while his main source of income is working as a self-described "professional hacker", helping ASX 200 companies test their cyber security systems, his love of tinkering with technology has not left him.

Jay can often be found with members of the Border FPV group, racing drones around local courses at breakneck speeds in what is known as first person view racing.

It was this hobby that drove Jay, with the support of Rohan Latimer from Wangaratta's Jewellers Coworking space, to work on developing his own technology to help drone racers.

Majority of Aussies favour home ownership over private education IF Aussies had to choose between the two, 87 per cent of Australian adults would choose owning a home over sending their children to private secondary school, according to a new study by ME. The research by ME found owning a home and sending your children to private secondary school are common goals for most Australians: 91 per cent currently own or would like to own a home, and if money wasn’t an issue, 58 per cent of Australian adults would like to send their kids to private school.

ME surveyed 1500 Australian adults to explore the trade-offs between home ownership and private education, the ďŹ nancial pressure associated with both and the sacriďŹ ces we’re prepared to make to reach these ďŹ nancial goals.

In terms of the affordability of private secondary schooling, of those surveyed, 38 per cent said it would be extremely difficult to send their children to private school, 50 per cent moderately difficult and 12 per cent not difficult at all.

Another key ďŹ nding is that many Aussies could not send their children to school if they owned a home.

Of those who said they’d like to send their children to private school, a massive 40 per cent say owning a home will stop them from doing so.

And when it comes down to the crunch, only 17 per cent can afford to both send their children to private school and own a home and the rest are

left with the decision to favour one over the other.

Although 45 per cent would make no property owning sacriďŹ ces to send their children to private school, about a third (31 per cent) said they’d sacriďŹ ce owning a larger home, 26 per cent would sacriďŹ ce renovating their home, 19 per cent would sacriďŹ ce living in their preferred suburb and eight per cent would sacriďŹ ce home ownership completely.

Scarce green pick along roadsides has become a highly attractive delicacy.

The ‘Big Dry’ has been hard on plants and animals, and tough for gardeners too. In our own garden we’ve been monitoring ‘survivors’, ‘casualties’, and ‘come again’ possibilities, along with those that struggle and may not make it through.

Alongside the disasters, there are some stand-out winners. Plants that grow close to the ground, and those

that put down fresh roots from nodes [runners] are well-placed to survive tough times. Such plants can be a constant bane - e.g. unwanted kikuyu lawn grass or couch grass running into garden beds. But also there are the welcome runners, such as strawberries, which have come-again new plants popping up at the nodes with ready-made roots perfectly designed for planting or sharing for a yummy harvest next spring.

In the ower garden a terriďŹ c survivor is Viola hederacea [native violet]. This evergreen ground-hugging perennial spreads widely, but is easily controlled and never a nuisance.

It owers almost all year round, has bright green foliage and purple and

white owers held singly on slender stems above the foliage.

If you have a water supply and a small shady space such as a fernery, Viola hederacea is a very useful plant.

Its oval-shaped leaves help retain moisture and smother weeds. It is not susceptible to bugs or chewing critters. It is frost and heat tolerant. It is a splendid pot ďŹ ller and can be planted almost any time of the year. Plants are readily available commercially. It is easily divided so you can propagate extra plants in almost no time at all.

It even comes with ready-made sections and well-developed roots. It’s a perfect plant to bring some freshness and cheer at the end of the ‘Big Dry.’

An unfortunate cause of some nose bleeds is neoplasia or ‘cancer’.

The most common type of cancer that dogs get in their nose is an adenocarcinoma.

These tend to be quite aggressive and not easy to treat.

Rat bait is a commonly used product that our dogs tend to be very fond of.

Ingestion of rat bait leads to a clotting disorder due to it stopping the liver from producing vitamin K which is needed to make clotting factors.

Once a clotting issue starts the affected animal can bleed anywhere.

Sometimes there is no evidence of bleeding, just a very anaemic pet!

But a blood nose that doesn’t seem to stop could indicate a clotting issue that needs to be dealt with immediately.

Given that there are many causes of a blood nose, if you do notice any blood coming out of your dog’s nose, its best to play it safe and get them checked by your local vet as soon as you can.

Jay said that in typical drone racing, participants can see where their drone is going, courtesy of the camera on the device, it is much harder to find out where you are relative to the other competing drones, or to keep track of exactly where you are on the course.

He likened it to playing a racing video game such as Mario Kart without the map in the corner of the screen.

“When you’re racing, you’ve got such a narrow point of view, you have no idea where the other racers are and it makes it very hard to strategise,” Jay said.

DOGS bleeding from the nose can be caused by many things.

Your vet will need a thorough history, such as when it started, which nostril, any other discharge, sneezing or coughing etc.

Some common causes for bleeding out of one nostril include: a foreign body, infection, neoplasia (cancer) and severe dental disease.

Causes of bleeding from both nostrils could include things such as: a bleeding disorder, infection, allergies and neoplasia.

Common foreign bodies that have a habit of getting up nostrils in this area are grass seeds.

Dogs will start sneezing immediately and sometimes pawing at their nose.

The only way to see if a grass seed is present and to remove it is to perform a general anaesthetic.

A small scope is then used to look up the nostrils and small forceps are used to remove the seed.

The most seeds I have removed from one nostril is four.

Long nosed dogs are prone to a condition called Aspergillosis.

This is a fungal infection which can lead to nose bleeds, depigmentation of the skin of the nostrils and a mucoid discharge.

Aspergillosis can be difficult to diagnose, involving biopsies, blood tests, x-rays and sometimes a CT scan.

Treatment is also difficult and

CATCH OF THE WEEK ◆ Wangaratta angler Chris Gunner recently caught and released this 82cm Murray Cod. The fish was caught using cheese on his “famous” red rod, which he said is the only rod that seems to catch fish during his annual camping trip with his friends. The catch was made at Peechelba.

The trout fishing has improved in the streams in recent weeks with the cooling water.

The problem now is not water temperatures, but water levels with many small streams across the region running very low and at a real risk of stopping all together.

Those streams with a health flow of water are fishing well and worth a try.

Over Easter, there were a number of quite large brown trout caught in the Kiewa River, with a few trout caught in the upper Ovens River as well.

one afternoon in the middle of Wangaratta last week with the biggest being a lovely 74cm fish.

Brett Corker and I caught two Murray cod close to Wangaratta on Easter Saturday.

This ended a ‘drought’, with our previous two Murray cod fishing trips having been fishless.

Once again, it was persistence that got us over the line.

Quite a few carp have been caught at Lake Moodemere with the odd redfin thrown into the mix.

Despite being stocked with quite a healthy number of yellowbelly, these native perch remain elusive in

Easter delivers for anglers THERE were quite a few fish caught right across the region over the Easter period with some quite large fish in the mix.

There have been some quite large Murray cod caught on lures in both the Kiewa and Mitta Mitta rivers.

The reports that I have received state that persistence has been the key with quality fish being caught, and not quantity.

In the Ovens River it has remained quite inconsistent with bait fishermen getting the best results.

My friend Tim Galley, who is a very patient and persistent angler, managed to catch three Murray cod in

raising our head from our work or screen, consumption of alcohol or drugs in front of our children, displaying standover tactics, accusations and inappropriate language, tearing people down verbally to make your point and passing on our poor eating habits/fussiness around food to our children, just to name a few.

If we don’t show our children how to behave professionally, personally, socially and in resolving conflict when it arises how do they learn how to do it in an effective and mature way?

Does aggression and threats of violence actually get you to the point you want to make?

Do two wrongs really make a right?

How can we expect our children to be decent human beings if our behaviour is aggressive, condescending and accusative?

None of us are perfect parents or human beings, and this article isn’t

to place blame or make anyone feel “less than”.

Instead, I hope it provokes some thoughts and reflection on how you, me and we can change our behavior now and in the future for the better for our children and generations to come.

And in conflict, reflect on what was our role in it and how we may have contributed to it, not just laying blame on the other party.

We are responsible for our children, however as our children grow they become their own person.

These developing humans will ( just like we all did) make mistakes.

Occasionally these mistakes have to be made a few times before a lesson is learned, or they have to see the hurt their actions have caused to understand that words and actions can have a devastating effect on others.

Hollandaise sauce

200gm unsalted butter, chopped

Method

3 x 60gm egg yolks

To make the hollandaise sauce, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat.

Use a metal spoon to skim any foam from the surface.

Pour the clear yellow butter into a heatproof jug.

Discard milky butter mixture.

Place egg yolks, lemon juice, salt and 1 tablespoon of the hot water in a blender.

Blend on high until well combined.

With the motor running, add hot butter in a thin, steady stream.

Add remaining water to thin the sauce slightly. Season, adding extra lemon juice, if necessary.

Steam or microwave the Fioretto®

1 tbsp fresh lemon juice 1/2 tsp sea salt flakes, crushed 2 tbsp hot water

until stems are bright green in colour and tender.

Drain well and pat dry with paper towel if necessary.

Cook the bacon in a frying pan until golden and crisp.

Top the toast with bacon then Fioretto®.

Stir hollandaise sauce and spoon over the Fioretto®.

Sprinkle with chives and season.

Serve with lemon wedges.

Three crucial things to do following a promotion IF youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve recently been promoted, there are three simple but crucial things you should do to make the early days in your new, more senior role count: slow down to absorb the particulars, reassess priorities to set goals and establish boundaries with former peers.

According to recruiting experts Hays, these three steps will help you make a positive impact straight away while laying the foundations for further progression. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Understandably, following a promotion most people want to make a positive impact and prove themselves, but for this to happen, you must have the humility to listen and learn from everyone around you, the focus to think about your short and longer-term goals, and the tact to manage both old and new workplace relationships,â&#x20AC;? says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Haysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advice: 1. Resist the urge to dive in head-ďŹ rst: Newlypromoted staff will often dive into their new role head-ďŹ rst, especially if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked at an organisation for a while and already have an understanding of how things are done.

Nick advises you to book in one-on-one time with stakeholders and peers to identify their priorities, what they need from you, and the improvements they would like to see in your department. During your ďŹ rst few team meetings, take note of the dynamics between employees, their questions and their overall focuses. Ask questions and contribute to the discussion, but only as and when you are conďŹ dent that you have something valuable to add.

2. Reassess your priorities and set goals: Having taken some time to reďŹ&#x201A;ect and assess, you are in a position to make more well-informed moves and changes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Draw up a list of short and long-term objectives and put together some SMART goals (SpeciďŹ c, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Measured),â&#x20AC;? advises Nick. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From here, you can identify quick wins that will add value straight away, as well as some more strategic objectives which require more forethought and forward planning.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also important to ďŹ ght the inclination to focus on tasks which were part of your previous role. Nick warns, â&#x20AC;&#x153;maybe you are subconsciously holding onto these tasks because you know how to do them and do them well, unlike some aspects of this new and unfamiliar role. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But having just been promoted, your focus has shifted, and the tasks which once featured at the top of your to-do list are now either somewhere further towards the bottom, or they sit with someone else completely. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You need to make sure your key priorities reďŹ&#x201A;ect this shift.â&#x20AC;?

3. Set boundaries with your former peers: One of the hardest parts of being promoted is being in a position where you have to manage your former peers â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some of whom might have become your friends.

According to Nick, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Your ďŹ rst step should be to book in one-on-one time with them individually to outline both your visions for the team, as well as their own career objectives. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a key part of your role as a people

manager anyway, but booking this meeting in sooner rather than later will help your team take you seriously as their manager and respond to this change in dynamic early on.â&#x20AC;?

You may ďŹ nd that this is enough to keep your manager-employee relationship separate to the more informal friendship one that you have.

However, if a former peer or friend crosses the line between professional and over familiar, for example, jokingly undermining you in front of

new starters, you will need to intervene quickly.

Nick suggests you clarify with them, in private, that during work hours they need to see and treat you as they would any manager, because you will be managing them just as you would any other employee.

You cannot be seen to be giving differential treatment just because you are friends or former peers. There is no need to be harsh, just assertive.

If I only had a 3D printed heart IN a major breakthrough for medical sciences, researchers at Tel Aviv University, Israel, have used 3D printing technologies to print a vascularised heart using a patient’s own cells and biological materials, with findings published in the journal of Advanced Science on April 15.

Up to this point, regenerative medicine - a field that is equal parts technology and biology - have only succeeded in printing simple tissues that do not contain blood vessels.

“This is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart replete with cells, blood vessels, ventricles and chambers,” lead researcher Professor Tal Dvir of TAU’s School

of Molecular Cell Biology and Biotechnology, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Sagol Center for Regenerative Biotechnology told web blog ‘Tel Aviv University American Friends’.

“This heart is made from human cells and patient-specific biological materials.

In our process these materials serve as the bioinks, substances made of sugars and proteins that can be used for 3D printing of complex tissue models,” Prof Dvir continued.

“People have managed to 3D-print the structure of a heart in the past, but not with cells or with blood vessels.

“Our results demonstrate

the potential of our approach for engineering personalised tissue and organ replacement in the future.”

Given that coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, and that a heart transplant is the only viable treatment available for patients with end stage heart failure, this breakthrough could signify a new zeitgeist for the field of medical organ transplantation - from one of constant desperation for new donors, to a standard medical procedure using medical printers and readily available materials.

“At this stage, our 3D heart is small, the size of a rabbit’s heart,” explains Prof. Dvir. “But larger human hearts require

the same technology.”

For the research, a biopsy of fatty tissue was taken from patients.

The cellular and acellular (not consisting of cells) materials of the tissue were then separated.

While the cells were reprogrammed to become pluripotent cells (stem cells capable of giving rise to a variety of different types of cells), the extracellular matrix (ECM) - a three-dimensional network of extracellular macromolecules such as collagen and glycoproteins - were processed into a personalised hydrogel that served as the printing ink.

After being mixed with the hydrogel, the cells were separated into cardiac or endothe-

lial cells (cells that line the interior of blood vessels) to create patient-specific, immune-compatible cardiac patches with blood vessels and, subsequently, an entire heart.

According to Prof. Dvir, the use of patient cells is crucial to 3D printed organs to greatly reduce the risk of a patient’s body rejecting the foreign organ.

“The biocompatibility of engineered materials is crucial to eliminating the risk of implant rejection, which jeopardizes the success of such treatments,” Prof. Dvir said.

“Ideally, the biomaterial should possess the same biochemical, mechanical and topographical properties of the patient’s own tissues.

“Here, we can report a sim-

ple approach to 3D-printed thick, vascularised and perfusable cardiac tissues that completely match the immunological, cellular, biochemical and anatomical properties of the patient.”

The next stage for the team of researchers is to teach the organs to behave like hearts (the cells need to be able to perform a pumping ability), and then they intend to transplant the organs into animal models.

“Our hope is that we will succeed and prove our method’s efficacy and usefulness,” said Prof. Dvir.

“Maybe, in 10 years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world, and these procedures will be conducted routinely.”

The second ever season of the show in Australia began with a bang on April 9, and Channel Ten did not stop teasing us with clips from the exciting first episodes.

So many love triangles, confrontations, exes and giggly girls have already been

showcased, and I’m very excited for more.

I was asked recently why I enjoy this show so much, and my answer was easy.

It’s entertaining.

The lives of these people who feel the need to go on a dating show, broadcasting their “love” is so incredibly insane to me that it’s hilarious.
