A Christmas worth saving for.

THERE are fewer happier places for Wangaratta couple Gary and Jane Michael than the teamwork and harmony of a dragon boat.

The couple first got involved in dragon boat racing a few years ago, initially as part of Northeast Health Wangaratta team the Tatsu Warriors, but now train and compete with border based team Bravehearts on the Murray.

Their involvement in the sport has taken them around Australia and the world, including races in Kuala Lumpur and China.

“We’ve enjoyed it and the friendships we’ve made,” Gary said, relishing the teamwork of dragon boat racing.

“You can’t be an individual on the boat.

“You are talking, bonding and working together as a team.”

Bravehearts on the Murray not only functions as a competitive dragon boat team, but the organisation also aims to support people in the region who have been touched by a cancer diagnosis.

Raising awareness about cancer in the community is another aspect the team is passionate about, particularly as many are survivors of cancer or have been affected by a cancer diagnosis.

“It’s something we can both do,” Jane said of the sport.

“A lot of people have their ailments, but you can still all hop in the boat.

“There have been real highs and good times, and real lows.

“But people help each other and support each other.”

CHRISTMAS is harvest time with an abundance of fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers ready for the picking which can be used to create home grown gifts for garden and food lovers.

Make a hamper filled with fresh produce from your garden.

Use a wicker basket, large bowl or other suitable container and line it with a checked tea towel.

‘Tis the season - for heatstroke THE Australian summer is a beautiful time of year, however, it is important to know how to keep your pet happy and comfortable in the warmer weather, in order to avoid them suffering heatstroke.

Heatstroke can happen very quickly and can be deadly.

It occurs when an animal is too hot and unable to effectively reduce their body temperature.

There are easy preventative steps you can take to avoid your pet suffering from heatstroke.

For example, when out enjoying a hot summer day, take extra care when playing and exercising with your pet.

Have fun but take it easy.

Taking that little bit of extra care on hot days will avoid potential issues.

Brachycephalic (short nosed breeds like pugs) are particularly susceptible to heatstroke so avoid any intense activity on those warmer days.

Another obvious and easy tip in order to protect your pet would be to avoid leaving them locked in the car.

Temperatures can rise rapidly inside cars, even on days that are not particularly hot.

Signs of heatstroke can include panting heavily, lethargy, incoordination, vomiting and losing consciousness.

If you see your pet, or any animal, showing any of the signs above or generally struggling in the heat, move them into a shaded or cool area, rinse them with cool water and try to keep them calm.

Do not use cold water or ice to try and speed up the cooling process, as this can cause blood vessels to constrict.

Then try to get them to a vet as soon as possible.

Summer is a great time of year, and by keeping these few tips in mind you will be able to enjoy the sunshine and have fun with your pet.

WELL this is it for me for 2015 folks.

I won’t be back until January 13, so here are a few tips for fishing in North East Victoria over the festive season.

Trout: Head high into the headwaters in search of cooler water.

The further upstream you can get on any given stream the better.

The Ovens River around Harrietville is a great starting point, so are the far upper reaches of the King River upstream of Pineapple Flat.

Don’t overlook the high country Falls Creek, Mt Buffalo etc...

Murray cod: These are everywhere.

Try the Ovens and King rivers, Buffalo River downstream of Lake Buffalo, Broken River, Kiewa River from Dederang downstream, Mitta Mitta River from Eskdale downstream and of course the Murray River.

Lake Mulwala should fish well but may be crowded.

Then again...it’s Christmas, and most places will be crowded.

Redfin: Lakes William Hovell, Buffalo, Sambell and Hume will all be worth fishing for redfin at this time of the year.

I have had reports of redfin being caught in all of these lakes recently.

Yellowbelly: Lake Nillahcootie is the spot to head for a feed of nice plate-sized yellowbelly.

Lakes Hume and Eildon house the biggest yellowbelly in the region, that’s why the trophy hunters like both lakes so much and overlook Nillahcootie.

The Broken and Goulburn rivers both have healthy populations of yellowbelly, so too does the Murray River from Lake Hume downstream.

All of these places will be worth fishing over the Christmas/New Year period.

THE mantra of the modern chef these days is to keep it simple in the kitchen and let the quality of ingredients speak for themselves.

It makes sense if you’ve gone to the effort of sourcing the finest seafood or a premium protein, not to smother it in spice or sauce or dismantle it into a form where it’s no longer recognisable.

And combining too many ingredients in the one dish is not only excessive but confuses your palate, which is why the “turducken� concept is so wrong.

While there’s nothing particularly unusual about a Christmas buffet including turkey, duck and chicken, the only place they should collide is sometime later on in your stomach.

Each deserves to be appreciated in its own right and could well be enjoyed with Brown Brothers foodfriendly Tempranillo and Graciano blend.

NOT only is this roast easy to whip up, it won’t blow the festive food budget.

This mouthwatering recipe from BeefandLamb.com.au features nonloin cuts, such as topside and blade that are as value packed as they are tasty.

Beef blade roast is from the shoulder blade of the beef, full of flavour and is versatile enough to be cooked whole as a roast, sliced into steaks and cooked on the barbecue or in a pan, or thinly sliced for a stir-fry.

Method 1. Preheat oven to 160°C. Blitz grated ginger, garlic, chilli, soy sauce, honey and mirin, rub all over beef and marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes. Place beef in a roasting pan on top of sliced ginger, drizzle with a little vegetable oil and roast for 20 minutes, reduce oven to 180°C and roast, basting occasionally with pan juices until browned and cooked to your liking (55-60°C internal temperature or 50-55 minutes for medium-rare, 60-65°C or 55 minutes-1 hour for medium), remove from pan, cover loosely with foil and set aside to rest for at least 20 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, for mushroom rice, heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat, add ginger, garlic and the white part of the spring onions, and sautĂŠ for about 2 minutes until fragrant. Add rice, add stock and soy sauce and bring to the boil. Cover and cook until rice is tender, stirring mushrooms through in the last couple of minutes of cooking (10-12 minutes). Serve with sliced beef and any pan juices along with steamed sugar snaps, scattered with spring onion greens.

Note: Mirin is a lightly sweet rice wine condiment available in the Asian section of many supermarkets or at specialist Asian supermarkets. If you can’t get it, stir 3 teaspoons sherry with 1 teaspoon caster sugar and for every tablespoon required. If you prefer a non-alcoholic alternative, use water instead of sherry.

GFC still hurting employment prospects of youth: report

even years on, the long shadow of the global financial crisis continues to undermine job prospects for Australia’s youth, with different impacts being felt by young men and young women.

Today, teenage boys and young men who are in the labour market, are more likely to be unemployed, according to a new trend analysis published by the national welfare agency the Brotherhood of St Laurence.

Meanwhile, young women are more likely to be underemployed - to have some work but wanting more hours, and so not even counted in the official unemployment rates published each month.

The analysis – published as part of the Brotherhood’s Youth Unemployment Monitor – highlights the different challenges the two sexes face in an employment market that demands more experience and skills than ever before from Australia’s emerging generation.

“Young people lacking experience must negotiate a modern economy that is rapidly

shifting to a knowledge and service base, striving to be internationally competitive and demanding more than ever of all its employees – including its new entrants,” said the Brotherhood’s executive director Tony Nicholson.

Overall young jobseekers have been under intense pressure in their hunt for work: as at August 2015, nearly 290,000 young people were entirely out of work across the nation – more than 50 per cent above, or 100,000 more people - than at the start of the GFC in 2008.

The figures are detailed in the welfare agency’s latest analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics trend data, which also found: - The unemployment rate for young men is two percentage points higher than for young women: at 14.6 per cent (men) compared with 12.5 per cent (women).

- 19.9 per cent of female 15-24 year olds in the labour market almost one in five are underemployed, compared with 15.4 per cent of young males in the same age group.

Internet taking over the job search process A

mong the nearly 20 per cent of employed people who changed jobs in 2014, 55 per cent used the Internet to find their new positions, says a new report from The Boston Consulting Group and Recruit Works Institute.

That finding, from a new report jointly produced by The Boston Consulting Group and Recruit Works Institute, underscores the sweeping changes that the Internet has brought to the job search market.

The report, titled Job Seeker Trends 2015: Channels, Search Time, and Income Change, is being released today.

The report, which reviews findings of a survey of more than 13,000 job seekers from 13 countries, delivers a global view of the job search process today.

The countries targeted by the survey cover 59 per cent of the roughly 3

billion people employed globally, or 1.7 billion people, making this report one of the largest global job seeker perception surveys ever conducted.

The findings raise strategic questions that can help employers fine-tune their recruitment and hiring strategies, craft their value propositions for potential employees, and deliver their messages through the channel that best suits their target talent pools.

It also presents data that will help government agencies, human resource–related companies, and job seekers themselves to assess the evolving state of the job search market.

“One of the key capabilities that differentiates the Internet channel from the referral channel is the Internet’s ability to process a much higher volume of applications,” said Kazumasa Sakurai,

a BCG partner and a coauthor of the report.

“We believe that key difference will drive the continued growth and evolution of Internet job search, and we look forward to seeing how future technological developments can continue to drive down the time job seekers spend searching for a new job without limiting—and in fact expanding—their employment options.”

“Job search behavior is drastically changing around the world, but until the publication of this report, we have had little insight into just how it’s changing,” said Yukio Okubo, the founder and general manager of Recruit Works Institute. “The unique evidence of job search behavior in various countries presented in the report promises to deepen our understanding of the global job market.”

So the Paris climate change deal has been approved WITH almost 200 nations putting up their hand, what does this mean for Australia’s future reduction targets?

Not so long ago there was talk that there was no way countries would look at attempting to seek a limit on the increase of global temperatures to “well below” two degrees Celsius.

The previously stated Australian target of a 26 to 28 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions below 2005 levels by 2030 remains unchanged, but certainly the Paris agreement will put a lot of pressure on the government to do more.

The Paris deal puts in place mechanisms to review reduction targets every five years commencing in 2020 and which will include Australia.

But the challenge will be that every five years there has to be a

Australia, as one of the world’s highest per capita emitters, will have to work harder over time to achieve their targets.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt said the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) originally known as the Direct Action plan, was the best way for Australia to “meet and beat” its obligations.

It is known as a “reverse auction” where the government pays for proposals put forward by companies to reduce their emissions, but the Federal Opposition said a floating

carbon price was the way to go, such as an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) which would penalise companies for their emissions.

Of course this puts the future of coal under the spotlight, with environmental groups saying we can help reduce global emissions by putting a freeze on any new coal mines and gradually phasing out the use of coal-fired power stations.

There is an increased focus at the moment on a proposed mine in Queensland where the Australian Institute suggests the $16 billion project would generate more annual emissions than Bangladesh or New York City.

I also note that there is a proposal to set up a fighting fund with $100 billion to help developing nations make the shift to green energy.

It would also be used to build up defences against rising sea levels, storms and droughts.

I was very pleased to observe the Federal Government has issued new advice to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) requesting a focus on “offshore wind technologies”.

Under the new mandate, signed

by Mr Hunt and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann on December 3, the $10 billion fund will be allowed to invest in wind projects, as long as they incorporate “emerging and innovative” methods.

“The government has also directed the corporation to include, as part of its investment activities in clean energy technologies, a focus on offshore wind technologies” the directive to the CEFC said.

From a position in July where the CEFC was ordered to stop funding wind power projects, as well as small-scale solar projects, we have now seen, some five months later, the CEFC funding to the tune of $67

million Australia’s third largest wind farm at Ararat in Western Victoria.

This project is eventually expected to produce enough electricity to power 120,000 homes a year.

Government sources say the new mandate was studiously crafted to ensure it did not break any promises previously made to anti-wind crossbenchers.

Victoria’s Environment Minister Lisa Neville said the decision was good news for local jobs and dealing with climate change.

“It’s been a very rocky 18 months for the industry and investment which has caused a lot of losses of jobs across Australia so this is a positive step forward,” she said.

The general manager of wind tower manufacturer Keppel Prince said it was the start of a new era for renewable energy under the Turnbull Government.
