FROM a carer support group to working towards creating calm spaces, a committed group of Indigo Shire locals are helping make the world a friendlier place for those living with dementia. The Changing Minds Beechworth project has evolved from an initiative formed in selected areas funded by Alzheimers Australia and the Municipal Association of Victoria. One of the most successful elements of the project has been the newly formed carer support group, and among the members is Lorna Nash, whose late husband Michael lived with dementia for the last 15 years of his life. Lorna said Michael was eventually diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia, a form of vascular dementia, after years of struggling to find words when he was talking. She said Michael, who in his younger years had read English at Cambridge and ran companies, managed to cope fairly well with his condition for a long time. Lorna would often provide her husband with clues to help him find his words. “It became a very close relationship,” she said. And after seeing how widespread forms of dementia have become in the aged care sector, she became determined to get in contact with others in the same situation. “It was such a shock to me to see the vast numbers of people living with dementia,” Lorna said. “I wasn’t aware of others going through that traumatic time.” Lorna met other people in similar situations and said they bolstered each other. continued page |

Some only flower once a year so read the labels carefully. Sollya heterophylla ‘Bluebell Creeper’ is an evergreen native with small blue flowers throughout the year. Ficus pumila ‘Creeping Fig’ is a good one for effectively covering up walls. It’s an evergreen self-clinger, with small heart shaped leaves. Hardenbergia ‘Happy Wanderer’ is a vigorous evergreen climber with sprays of purple pea flowers in late winter and early spring. MOST climbing plants originated in forests, growing up through the trees to reach the sunlight. It is this climbing, rambling habit that makes them so attractive and versatile in the garden. They can be used to cover up ugly fences or walls, create areas of privacy or grown over pergolas and other outdoor structures to provide shade for us and other plants. They can even be grown as groundcovers. Most climbers are fast growers, so to keep the plant bushy, tip prune regularly to encourage side growth and more flowers. Prune after flowering to keep the plant under control. Make sure they have a strong support structure to climb over. “It made such a difference to my grief,” she said. “It’s very difficult to talk to people about it…just coping with all the emotions and guilt and grief. “So many people are surviving in this twilight zone of dementia.” Fellow group member Penny Bingham, who lives in Rutherglen and cares for her husband Fred, agrees that the experience of people living with dementia, and those that care for them, can often be hidden and that making connections is important. Fred was diagnosed in 2013 with Lewy Body dementia, which is on the Parkinson’s Disease spectrum. He has impaired his cognitive function as well as Parkinson’slike physical symptoms. “The more people can be involved, the better their quality of life is going to be,” Penny said, hopeful the group will become a valuable point of contact for others in the same situation. “My involvement in the project has been enormously helpful.” Penny said that when people care for others living with dementia, it can often be isolating as their regular social contact falls away. “It is constant and you lose flexibility and spontaneity,” she said. “And every case is different, every form of it is different.” Anna Mackinlay, from Beechworth Health Service, encourages locals to get involved with Changing Minds and said making spaces more
THE flowers are blooming and the weather is getting warm and humid, bringing around lots of bees, mosquitoes and other stinging insects. Many common garden insects (bees, ants, wasps) can cause allergic or anaphylactic reactions in dogs and cats. The clinical signs of the reaction will usually be seen within 30minutes with an allergic reaction present as swelling of a localised area, commonly the head, intense irritation or wheels (raised lumps) over the body. The more severe anaphylactic reaction can present with vomiting, diarrhoea, respiratory distress and even loss of consciousness and death. Antihistamine and cortisone can be given in the case of an allergic reaction. The potentially life threatening anaphylactic reactions may require further treatment and stablisiation. As with humans, many pets
find mosquitoes highly irritating and they may cause itchy lesions. Besides the local, non life threatening irritation, mosquitoes can spread disease to our pets. Rabbits can be infected with the fatal myxomatosis virus leading to swollen ears, eyes, white ocular and nasal discharge and swollen genitalia. Heartworm in dogs and cats is also spread by specific mosquitoes causing potentially fatal disease of the heart and associated arteries. Heartworm preventatives are available, however, there is no vaccine or product available to prevent against myxomatosis infection in rabbits. The use of “pet safe” mosquito repellents and mosquito proof netting may reduce the risk of infection. Flies are yet another annoying summer insect. Flies are, on the whole, minimally harmful to companion animals.
Some dogs may get scabs along their ears and nose which are generally due to fly bites, or other biting insects. In some cases these bites can be quite severe and fail to heal with the animals continually irritated by the insects. There are creams available to treat the bites and a number of repellent products in the form of monthly spot ons or daily sprays. Trout active, but not everywhere THE great fishing from across the region has continued over the last week with reports of fish being caught all over the place. The trout fishing has shown no sign of slowing down just yet, and most likely won’t for a few weeks either until we start getting some warmer weather. The Ovens River upstream of Bright continues to be the standout fishery here in North East Victoria, while a little further south the Goulburn River and its tributaries around Thornton continue to produce good numbers of trout. The Mitta Mitta River around Eskdale has been fishing okay, but from all accounts it has not been ‘red hot’ so to speak with a few trout turning up on bladed spinners and

small minnows. I have received two fishless reports this week, one from the Kiewa River around Tawonga and one from Snowy Creek near Mitta Mitta. Both anglers stated that the streams they were in looked fantastic, but for whatever reason they just did not see any fish. So my tip is to head to either the upper Ovens River or the Goulburn River at the moment if you’re after a feed of trout. I had a ‘near fishless experience’

myself last weekend. Following some quite decent reports of yellowbelly being caught in Lake Hume and Lake Eildon, I headed over to the Broken River armed with my bait rods and a bucket of worms as I know the Broken River is stocked annually with yellowbelly. I sat there in my chair watching my rods for over four hours without as much as a nibble, and then just on dark I hooked onto a monster - a European carp of around 12lb. Not exactly what I was after, but great fun all the same. In next week’s report I will be writing a bit of a feature on yellowbelly and where to head during October to increase your chances of catching one.

Can our new Prime Minister deliver? THEY say a week is a long time in politics and the events of last week may have surprised many, but those, including my peers, saw the need for change and applauded the decision to act swiftly. Tony Abbott’s outstanding political skills in shoring up internal support saw him survive another six months as Prime Minister, but the Abbott government found itself in this place as a result of too many examples where the policies became paralysed. The Australian people had already endured six long years of dysfunctional leadership under Labor and then we experienced another two years under Abbott. If we look at the big picture, it appears to me the government has underperformed over the last two years, and you cannot hide the fact that unemployment is still too high at 6.2 per cent (higher than when they came to office) and much higher than the USA at 5.1 per cent. There is talk that some 250,000 will lose their jobs in Victoria and South Australia over the next year or so, as the car industry grinds to a halt and I shudder what this will do to unemployment. I keep hearing that 330,000 jobs have been created since this government came to office and would have thought this would have significantly reduced unemployment, but this is not the case as they only count the jobs filled. We were able to dodge a bullet with the 0.2 per cent economic growth figure for the last quarter, but the economy needs a fix right now. There is a need for tax reform – which would allow the government to do something about the fragile state of the economy, but they have resisted this and it looks like for all intents and purposes it’s dead in the water. Initiatives are being randomly ruled in and out and we’ll be lucky if we get to see the much promised green options paper before year’s end. To make matters worse, Joe Hockey recently

These included a hostile Senate (and backbench) inheriting a debt-and-deficit crisis, unprecedented global economic conditions and too many ‘Captains Picks’. In the end the electorate wants to feel safe in their choice and, no matter what the global circumstances, safe with where the country is heading”. Early in the term of this parliament the Prime Minister promised a regular performance review of his ministers and I wonder how many ministers have been tapped on the shoulder and invited to discuss their performance? Given there have been very few ministerial changes, he must have been satisfied with their performance. Good leadership builds confidence and takes people with you. Whether it be business, the community or politics, if you are believed and respected you can get on with the job. When you are not, you are stuck in survival mode – and the critical reforms go by the wayside. Let’s hope our new Prime Minister can quickly change the face of the economy and we will see some growth happening.

Duel at Beechworth, 1867 THERE was a deal of surprise expressed when a report circulated in Beechworth that a real duel had been arranged, following a falling out between Colonel Probst, the commander of the Beechworth German Rifles, and his adjutant, Captain Ahrens. Rumour had it that a matter of honour was involved - a disturbance over a woman at the Freemason Arms Hotel. An appointment was made for a duel with
pistols at dawn on September 23, 1867. The place chosen was the Rifle Ground near the Beechworth Racecourse. I DON’T know how many bananas go brown before I have time to eat them (I’m not a big fruit person). So it’s always nice to have this recipe to use up over ripe bananas. Also you can do this without a mixer, which makes it easy and quick. I don’t even know how long I have had this recipe for, but I use it often now I have pure buttermilk, what a difference it makes to the finished loaf. Buttermilk is the secret ingredient that makes this nutty banana bread extra moist. Method Pre-heat oven to 165 degrees Celsius. Spray a loaf pan with nonstick spray coating. Blend together the eggs, buttermilk, oil and bananas. Sift together the sugar, flour, baking soda and salt. Add to banana mixture and stir in walnuts. Mix well. Pour into prepared loaf pan and bake 1 hour and 20 minutes or until a skewer inserted into cake comes out clean. You don’t need to ice your loaf, just dust it with icing sugar.
