FROM the tiniest schoolchildren to horses and carriages, the parade that takes place during the Beechworth Bakery and Beechworth Honey Golden Horseshoes Festival is a true community effort and is synonymous with Easter in the area.

Christine Cansfield-Smith is fronting up for her second year as event coordinator, delighted to be so heavily involved since making a treechange from Canberra several years ago.

“It used to always be spectacular,” she said, noting it’s an ideal way to showcase the town.

“It’s one of the creative sides of the festival and I just love the colour and excitement.

“I’m a great believer in helping Beechworth to be better and do more.”

Christine had an ambition to lend more music to the parade and said onlookers should enjoy this year’s parade theme, “music and fun”.

Among the younger members of the community that get involved each year are students from the Beechworth Montessori School.

Alison Lloyd, coordinator of the school’s entry this year, said it is an unforgettable experience.

“Being right in the middle of the parade, marching down the main street with the whole community looking on, gives our children a strong feeling of worth and inclusion,” she said.

Alison said the school was a flurry of activity in the weeks leading up to the parade, with older children helping to plan out the entry and the whole school working together to perfect it.

“In class time we might practice a particular song or dance; families are invited to work on making simple props at home together,” she said. continued page |

Growing winter brassicas

What’s in your garden: The garden began as an unused tobacco paddock infested with blackberries.

We have spent many years improving the soil by slashing and leaving the mulch and planting trees. The garden is really a developing woodland consisting of native trees and exotics.

These include Californian Redwoods (Sequoia Semperivans Sequoia Gigantium), Indian Himalayan Cedar (Cedrus Deodora), numerous varieties of oak trees and maples including Japanese Maples and Canadian maples.

We have a couple of specimens of Maidenhair Tree (Ginko Biloba) that are surviving the harsh conditions and many more in pots waiting to be planted in spring in sheltered positions.

Other exotics include Dawn Redwoods (Metasequoia), Swamp Cypress (Taxodium Distichum) and Tupelo trees (Nyssa Sylvatica).

The garden features two dams which attract many varieties of water birds.

Many other varieties of birds visit our garden including king parrots which demand to be fed.

Wonga pigeons are seen on occasions.

possums, glider possums, native rats and mice, blue tongue lizards, black, brown and tiger snakes, frogs and spiders.

What do you enjoy about gardening: Considering the scale of the area we are developing, the term ‘gardening’ is inadequate; I would prefer to call it ‘land management’.

Basically it’s enjoyable being outside in a space where your mind can be creatively charged and your body physically connecting with the land.

Favourite plant/spot : There are many favourite spots in the garden where I can look

at the water, wander around the different trees that are noticeably growing after many years of hard work and find places to sit and look at Mt Bogong.

As an artist, a favourite spot of mine is also in my studio which features large windows where I can look out as I work.

Water saving/conservation tip: We are fortunate to have gravity fed water from a permanent creek but this is only available to plants/tress around the house. Most of the garden survives on rainfall.

Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: If you try to keep your garden ‘perfectly manicured’ or totally controlled it will send you crazy as you are being a slave to your garden. Nature wants to be unruly.

YES, it’s still hot but now is the best time to plant brassicas in the veggie patch.

They are cool season vegetables, best planted during early autumn for a mid to late winter harvest.

Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts are all members of the cabbage family, commonly known as ‘brassicas�.

Chose a spot in a sunny position that receives at least six hours of sunlight per day.

Practice crop rotation by planting in a different position each year.

Avoid planting in a garden bed where you have grown cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower or cabbages in the last three years to reduce plant diseases.

All brassicas are susceptible to a soilborne disease called club root, which causes the plants to wilt rapidly on hot days.

Before planting, prepare the area well by removing any weeds and digging over the soil to a fine tilth, then work in some compost and Dynamic Lifter.

Check the soil pH as brassicas do best in a soil with a pH reading of 6.5-7.5.

After planting seedlings, water in well with a seaweed product to reduce transplant shock and help the roots establish quicker.

Protect seedlings from snails.

Cabbage reaches maturity when the head is firm, usually in around 10 - 12 weeks.

Cabbage varieties include green and red, the crinkled savoy and newer smaller growing miniature versions.

Broccoli is a slow grower maturing in 16–20 weeks during the cooler months.

The large headed varieties produce one large single head with some varieties also producing smaller side shoots after the head is harvested.

There are also sprouting varieties which grow into bushier plants and produce numerous small heads.

Cauliflower takes between 12-16 weeks to mature.

Miniature varieties are also available and suitable for container growing.

As the florets of the cauliflower develop, protect the head from sun and rain by tying two leaves together with a rubber band to stop it turning brown.

Brussels sprouts have a long growing period of between 20-24 weeks.

The sprouts look like tiny cabbages and grow along a tall upright stalk under the leaves.

Got a new puppy?

Socialise WHEN getting a new puppy there are many things you need to consider to keep them happy and healthy as they grow into adult dogs.

This includes the very important time in your new puppy’s development, known as the “Socialisation Period”.

So what is it?

The “Socialisation Period” is a critical time that occurs in the puppy’s life between the ages of 3–14 weeks.

This period is the time where puppies form social relationships and form both good and bad associations.

Hence what occurs during the socialisation period has long last effects and can be the beginning of many future problems.

It is important that during the socialisation period you expose your puppy to lots of new experiences.

These experiences must be

positive for the puppy, rewarding and non-threatening.

Through this the puppy will develop positive associations.

Enrolling in a puppy class is a fantastic way for your puppy to be exposed to these positive experiences, and can be a fun learning experience for owners!

As well as puppy classes, remember to introduce your puppy to family and friends and any of their pets too.

However, whilst your puppy is still getting their initial vaccinations, they should only socialise with other dogs who are up to date with their vaccinations.

For a good online resource for introducing your puppy to the family, including some videos, visit www.thefamilydog.com As your puppy begins to make friends, be careful not to inadvertently expose your puppy to a negative socialisation experience.

An example of this might be forcing your puppy to play and interact with another dog/person that is clearly causing your puppy distress, this can be counterproductive.

So get out there in to the big wide world and have fun with your puppy.

Alison said that being in the parade helps the school “communicate to the wider community how proud we are to be here, and how committed we are to the life of the town”.

“You’ll find some of us participating with the Montessori school then jumping behind a banner for Scouts or CFA – we wear many hats in a small, tight knit community like this, and we value those connections,” she said.

“The festival is a shared experience, which creates shared memories and a strong sense of connection to the town.

“The parade very obviously places a value in the role our local businesses and community groups

play in the life of Beechworth.”

“I feel lucky to raise my children in a place which values such things.”

Graham Fisher, of Beechworth Carriages, is among the many representatives of local businesses that regularly take part in the parade, and his horsedrawn wagon brings an old world touch to proceedings.

A long time Beechworth resident, he said he had been participating in the parade for the past decade with his trusty horses and an old style replica wagon.

“It’s a big event, where people get to showcase things from around the region,” he said.

“A lot of people get enjoyment out of it.”

The Beechworth Bakery and Beechworth Honey Golden Horseshoes Festival parade will take place from 2pm this Saturday in Ford Street, Beechworth.

Rain mixes up the fishing RAIN, glorious rain.

It’s great for the farmers, great for the waterways, great for the trout fishing, but not so great for the Murray cod fishing.

The recent sudden change in weather is sure to cause some big changes in the behaviour of local fish species.

The Murray cod will quite likely slow right down and become quite erratic with their feeding, while the flush of cooler water should see the trout fishing in the streams really pick up.

If you are wanting to target Murray cod, my suggestion is to head to Lake Mulwala where the water level remains quite stable, and any dirty water is diluted unless we get a really big flood.

Lake Mulwala has been fishing very well lately, with reports of Murray cod being caught coming in left right and centre - some of which have been quite

large fish well over 100cm long.

Beware the blue green algae though - it is there, but many people are still fishing and catching good fish. Just don’t drink the water.

Most of the cod have been caught on both spinnerbaits and hard body lures.

Surface lures have also accounted for a lot of fish, including a couple over 100cm long.

Lake William Hovell is fishing well for redfin, although most of the fish have been quite small.

There are some larger fish in there

among the small ones, but it takes persistence to locate them.

Last weekend Shane Orr and I fished from Shane’s boat and managed to catch around 15 or so small redfin between us.

Shane caught the largest fish, which was not big, but big enough to meet the fate of his finely honed and tuned redfin filleting skills.

Most of our redfin were caught in Strike Tiger 2” curl tail grub soft plastics in “whitebait pearl” colour.

The boat ramp at Lake William Hovell is now out of the water, however it is still very easy to launch a boat with any vehicle.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Beechworth blaze, 1867 MARCH 23 was the date of perhaps the biggest town fire in the North East’s history.

The fire started in the stables of the Empire Hotel in Camp Street, late on a Saturday night.

Before the fire burned itself out, seven buildings had been completely destroyed, four severely damaged, and thousands of pounds’ worth of property were lost.

The fire brigade, were unable to help, as there was a blockage in the town water supply, but miraculously, there was no loss of human life.

FOR many families, Easter is a magical time of year where we gather to observe our unique cultural traditions and share them with the next generation.

In my family it always involved pork, sauerkraut and a delicious, yeast-based cake called a “kringel”; shaped like a pretzel with crunchy sugar and almonds sprinkled on top.

When I think of Easter I can smell that delicious cake, but as a kid it was all about getting through main course so we could hunt for the chocolate eggs “grandpa” Easter bunny had hidden, before everyone gathered in the kitchen for egg colouring.

Wine was always in the mix and while nanna may have started with a sherry, there was also sparkling, sweet wine and the best of reds.

She would have enjoyed the Rutherglen Estates Shiraz I plan to bring along this year.

THIS lasagne by Liliana Battle is an ideal dish to serve up at any A Taste of Harmony event in your workplace, taking place this week until Sunday.

Method Preheat your oven to 180 degrees.

Spoon a little sauce into the base of a large baking dish (the dish I use is 25cm x 30cm and about 10cm deep, but adjust to suit whatever size dish you have at home). Spread to cover the bottom.

Lay lasagne sheets to cover the base without overlapping. If the lasagne sheets don’t fit, just break them in half to fit in one single layer.

Top the lasagne sheets with a few ladlefuls of sauce (note – your sauce should be quite thin and easy to spread.

Add a little water to loosen it if too thick).

Scatter with a handful of cheddar cheese and a sprinkle of Parmesan.

Keep layering with pasta sheets and sauce and cheese until you reach the top of your dish. Top the last layer with sauce, then cover liberally with cheese.

Depending on the size of your dish, you may not need all the cheese or sauce.

If your sauce was thick, especially if you made it the day before, you will need to add some moisture so the dried sheets cook. Pour about a cup of water around the sides of the dish. The rule is to see watery looking sauce about halfway up the lasagne. This will disappear as the lasagne cooks and absorbs the moisture.

Cover with a sheet of baking paper, then top with alfoil to seal. Bake, covered for 40 minutes, then remove alfoil and cook for a further 15 minutes or until golden and cooked through.

Allow to sit for 20 minutes before serving. This allows the layers to settle and it will be easier to cut.

Superannuation and wealth?

I WAS very interested in my reading this past week that someone like Paul Howes of KPMG should be saying that proposed changes could drive some smaller players out of the superannuation industry.

This comes on top of statements made by Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Small Business, Kelly O’Dwyer, that there will probably be a crackdown on tax breaks for the rich.

The Federal Government accepts superannuation is not intended to be a support for the accumulation of wealth that can be passed down to generations.

Ms O’Dwyer said that no one has a right to a super tax concession.

“It is a gift that the government should only provide when it makes sense.

Ms O’Dwyer said super had a “very practical” purpose and should be used to increase self-sufficiency in retirement.

“It is not intended to be a support for the accumulation of wealth that can be passed to future generations,” she said.

The discussion paper on superannuation issued by the Turnbull government is the forerunner I believe of the plan to have a definition of superannuation written into law for the first time.

It has been welcomed by the retail, industry and self-managed factions of the sector, although there is still some debate as to what should be the exact wording.

I assume this may be the reason Ms O’Dwyer met with key stakeholders last week.

For the first time it would appear the government might bite the bullet and get a hand on what the purpose of contributing to superannuation is about.

Paul Howes of KPMG said the effect of formalising such a seemingly obvious truth should not be underestimated.

He said that redefining the objectives of the super system - to change the focus from accumulation to de-accumulation - is set to be a massive shift with a huge impact on how products and services in the market are designed, sold and regulated.

If the government does formalise “retirement income” as the purpose of super, it would place an imperative on funds, which have historically managed accumulation accounts, to run more complex pension account divisions.

The government has already said it will accept another recommendation of the Murray Inquiry – to force all funds to offer a “comprehensive income product for retirement” to all retiring members.

Some of the larger players in the market are well placed to cope with these changes, but many smaller funds will struggle.

“Having a clear objective for the system will provide a means to measure the merits of competing proposals,” she said.

Family fun in Beechworth

BEECHWORTH’S time honoured appeal shines especially bright each Easter as the streets come to life to the Beechworth Bakery and Beechworth Honey Golden Horseshoes Festival.

The final preparations for the 161st Beechworth Golden Horseshoes are underway.

Committee president Ian McVea said the annual street festival attracts around 20,000 people to the historic village of Beechworth, and encouraged locals and visitors alike to make the trip to enjoy the festival and entertainment.

He said the annual parade is a focal point, with many locals getting involved through their business, schools, sports clubs or community organisations.

He added that this year’s festival includes a great line up of live music gracing two stages, including the talents of the Marisa Quigley Trio, Ethanol Brothers, Kissin Cousins, Grooveyard Unplugged, Sarah Pitcher, Caitlin Dwyer, Sinead Sutton, Cutest Little Monster, Kye Richardson, Kev Haggerty, Lilting, Jigid and Bush Telegraph belting out their tunes.

There will be lots of children’s entertainment with Tubby the Robot, Milli and

stilt walkers captivating the crowds with their antics of magic and circus acts.

Gardeners Entertainment will be in the Police Paddocks with their sideshow rides for the teenagers.

Not to be missed is the shoeing of the horse with the horseshoes made of gold at 12pm in the middle of town.

The shoeing re-enacts the legend of political aspirant Daniel Cameron who led a colourful parade through the streets of Beechworth in 1855.

The festival highlight at 2pm on Easter Saturday, the Grand Parade, is set a spectacle of over 22 colourful floats, marching groups and bands.

The CFA (Country Fire Authority) and SES are hosting a display of their emergency vehicles along with education vans.

Ford Street will also be lined with cars from yesteryear with a vintage and veteran car display.

There are a range of activities on all weekend from the golf tournament on Good Friday, markets, a fun run on Saturday morning, children’s Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday and the Wooragee Easter Market on the Monday.

Local talent takes to festival stages THE streets will be abuzz with music during the Beechworth Bakery and Beechworth Honey Golden Horseshoes Festival.

The festival’s two stages - the Empire Stage and Hibernian Playground Stage – have a full schedule of bands and performers, many of whom have a local connection.

One of those is Sarah Pitcher, a former Beechworth resident and

singer currently studying at the Australian Institute of Music in Melbourne.

She is currently in her second year of studying for a Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Performance for Voice and Ms Pitcher said she is excited to once again perform in the North East.

“It’ll be good to be back,” she said.

Ms Pitcher said she has loved sing-

ing for as long as she can remember.

Moving with her family from Sydney to Beechworth in 2009, she attended Galen Catholic College in Wangaratta from year nine until she completed her secondary education, and said she had many fond memories of her time there.

She said she received a lot of encouragement from teachers there, including David Ashfield and Julie Nolan, and performed in several school productions, taking on roles ranging from Rizzo in Grease to the narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz.

During her teenage years she also regularly performed gigs in the area, including at the Golden Horseshoes Festival, the Beechworth Celtic Festival, and the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz.

A big fan of singer songwriter Sara Bareilles, Ms Pitcher said her performances encompassed a range of genres, including indie pop, rock and folk.

Sarah is set to perform on the festival’s Empire stage on Saturday morning.

Bakery makes its mark

WITH a new Beechworth manager, Trina Christie, and plenty of activities planned, the Beechworth Bakery and Beechworth Honey Golden Horsehoes festival will be an exciting time for the team at Beechworth Bakery.

Trina, formerly a manager at the bakery’s Myer Centrepoint store in Albury, came to Beechworth in search of new challenges and said she is loving her new role.

“It’s a great company to work for,” she said.

She said there will be plenty going on at Beechworth Bakery during the festival, including free face paint-

ing at the bakery between 10am-2pm on Easter Sunday, and Beechworth Bakery preparing a “Where’s Wally” themed float for Saturday’s parade.

Ms Christie added that during the parade, staff ‘Wallies’ will be handing out a “Spot the Difference” challenge to the crowd, and people who complete it and hand it in to the bakery will go into the running for a prize hamper drawn on Easter Sunday.

She praised the parade and festival as positive events for Beechworth and district.

“It’s such a wonderful and fun event, and it brings the community together,” she said.

Get on your feet and go

WITH hundreds of participants taking part every year, the Beechworth Fun Run is ever increasing in popularity.

This year’s run will be held during the Beechworth Bakery and Beechworth Honey Golden Horseshoes Festival this Saturday, March 26, with 10km and 3km courses.

The 10km event is a very scenic and diverse route through the bushland gorge, the streets of Beechworth historic town, past Lake Sambell and finally through the golf course.

The course is a good challenge for very experienced runners but also just a lovely walk for those who are not so fit.

The event is also part of the North East Runners Series.

The 3km run sees people who are starting out on their fitness climb, lots of families, prams and dogs participating.

The Beechworth Gold Easter Fun Run/ Walk has been recognised by ‘Run 4 Your Life’ Magazine as the ‘Most Family Friendly’ Run and as one of their ‘Must Do’ runs.

The event, held on Easter Saturday each year, is run by the Beechworth Secondary College as their major fundraiser as well as being part of the festival.

The race starts at 9am from the Beechworth Secondary College in Balaclava Road (opposite the Cemetery).

Registrations will be accepted on the day from 7-8.30am.

Participants are encouraged to register early online to take advantage of reduced entry fees (see www.beechworthfunrun.com. au for more information).

There will be a barbecue breakfast and coffee van available also from 7.30am.
