ACROSS the North East, members of various community groups are working hard to bring the community’s attention to the benefits of renewable energy. These include those involved in the North East’s Community Energy Network, whose member groups include Totally Renewable Yackandandah, Wangaratta Sustainability Network and many more. Cambell Klose, convenor of community energy retailer Indigo Power, said “local energy groups are transforming our towns and regions by promoting renewable energy”, and said helping preserve the environment is a shared responsibility. “We know human activity is changing the climate,” Cambell said. “I think that everybody has a responsibility to do what they can to ensure future generations can enjoy and have access to some of the same stunning nature we have now. “I want my kids to be able to visit the Great Barrier Reef; I want to be able to continue to ski at our ski resorts; I want our region to still farm some of the best produce in the country. “Climate change threatens that. “I think that communities can offer a unique solu-

tion to climate change by transitioning to clean energy.” Cambell said renewable energy is not only a low carbon alternative that helps address climate change, but it also quite literally gives power back to communities. “With renewable energy, we are no longer just at the receiving end of energy. “We can generate our own energy and share it between each other. “It allows communities to own their energy generation and re-invest back into our local region.” “The Community Energy Network brings together local community energy groups and allows us to work together. “Our region has the highest concentration of community energy groups anywhere in the country.” Members of the Wangaratta Sustainability Network (WSN), including Rowan O’Hagan, Rob Carolane and Tony Lane, said the group is working continuously to raise awareness of renewable energy opportunities, particularly those with a community benefit.
