Second chances

WEDDINGS, time spent with family, travel, hobbies - the simple stuff of life that most of us take for granted.

But 20 years ago, Wangaratta’s Janet Hammond thought she was going to be robbed of all of these things when an inexplicable complication following a breast biopsy procedure saw her liver fail and her health decline rapidly.

Undergoing treatment at Melbourne, the 49 year old mum said she was just days from death when an organ donation from a stranger resulted in her receiving a life saving liver transplant.

And she has never looked back since.

“I am thankful for the donation, without it, I wouldn’t be here today,” she said, relaxing in her Wangaratta garden last week.

“At the time, I never thought I’d get home.”

Janet said in the months following the transplant, there were painstaking weeks of treatment, and she was initially so weak that she had to learn to walk all over again.

But she smiles, saying it was all worth it for the rich experiences she has had in her life during the past two decades.

“It changed my attitude to life – you’ve got to live it to the fullest,” she said.

“I like to enjoy my life.”

Janet has made trips of a lifetime to Canada and New Zealand, seen three of her children get married (her oldest daughter was already married before her transplant), seen her two grandchildren grow up, and been able to devote her time to several community organisations, including Wangaratta Ladies Probus and Northeast Health Wangaratta’s Friends of the Hospital.

Most can be grown successfully in the North East region although some varieties do better than others.

Eureka lemons struggle in the colder areas and hate frosts.

For our region Meyer and Lisborne lemons are better as they are suited to cooler climates.

Meyer is the most cold tolerant producing lemons for most of the year.

It grows to two metres and is also suitable for growing in pots.

Lisborne is a thorny tree growing to four metres with its main crop during the winter and spring months.

The sweeter ‘Lemonade’ looks like a lemon, but can be eaten like an orange.

The seedless Valencia orange is a fast growing tree, growing to four metres, and fruits in late winter into spring.

Valencias can hold the fruit on the tree for many months, extending the season.

They are suitable for eating and juicing.

Washington navels fruit early winter and are the best eating orange.

But they are prone to disease, crop less than Valencia and the juice deteriorates quickly.

Grapefruit trees are larger citrus, growing 4-6m tall.

The red varieties are much sweeter than the yellow varieties and are seedless.

Such is her gratitude for the gift that organ donation has given her, she celebrates the anniversary of her transplant on August 9 every year, and is holding a dinner in coming weeks to raise money for the Austin Hospital’s liver research unit.

While she has never been able to find out any information about the person whose liver she received, Janet remains so thankful and urges people considering organ donation to have frank discussions with their relatives in case the worst does happen.

“You’ve got to talk with your family, make them understand your wishes,” she said.

“You can save quite a few people by registering (as an organ donor).”

Her words were echoed by Northeast Health Wangaratta donation specialist nurse Catherine Chanter, who said families in the midst of grief often refuse organ donation if they are not made

aware of their loved one’s wishes.

“It’s such an unexpected, sudden event that leads to donation,” Ms Chanter said.

People from all walks of life are being encouraged to discuss organ donation and sign up to the organ donor register during Donate Life Week, taking place on August 2-9.

One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people, and eligible organs can include heart, lungs, kidney, liver, pancreas and pancreas islets, tissue including skin, bone (especially femoral head), heart valves, eye and cornea, cartilage, tendons and veins.

Australia is a world leader in transplant outcomes but 1600 people still remain on organ waiting lists at any time.

IT’S an all too common story: The trembling dog in the waiting room or the hiding, hissing cat in the carry cage, the dog that is scared of thunder and fireworks, or the dog who thinks men in hats are out to get him.

Fear is a natural emotion for all animal species- it is what keeps an inquisitive kitten from being eaten by a wolf.

Although natural, fear can cause a lot of distress to our companion animals and should be taken as seriously as a disease like diabetes.

Fear of particular objects, people or places can lead to early euthanasia due to destructive and worsening behaviour, potential fear-aggression or lack of required veterinary attention.

There are many ways we can help prevent fear - the most important being exposure at an early age.

Animals are most impressionable during their first three weeks to three months.

During this time they are eager to learn about their surroundings and make associations between interactions and outcomes.

This means, for us to make the biggest influence on their

behaviour and fear level as an adult we must expose them in a positive way as a pup.

Puppies and kittens should be exposed to all scenarios and many different people to allow them to realise that these situations are safe.

This exposure should never be forced and should only be positive.

If a young animal is showing signs of fear then food and toys should be used to try and relax them and build that positive association.

Talk to your local veterinary clinic about socialising puppies and kittens.

For the fearful adult pet who has already built negative associations with an event - be it thunder, visitors or veterinary and grooming procedures - changing their mindset is harder but can be done.

In order to achieve a change in their fear level we must change their state of mind in the “scary” situation from fearful to happy using toys and treats.

These transformations are very achievable at home and do not require any advanced training.

Thinking about it from our point of view, if you were scared of spiders and someone shoved a spider in your face (forced you to have your nails clipped) or yelled at you every time the spider (nail clippers) was in the room you would soon hate that

spider (nail clipping) more.

If when you saw this spider (nail clippers) you were given a block of your favourite chocolate to eat, initially you would be a bit hesitant, but with time you would realise that the spider (nail clipping) meant good things like chocolate.

This is the basic principle behind retraining cats and dogs.

This must be practised across all situations as animals will not generalise, eg we would not assume that because a huntsman came with the chocolate that a redback is also safe and brings chocolate treats.

More specifically fear free veterinary visits are something that many clinics offer.

This involves no forced handling of animals and instead uses their favourite treats and toys to retrain them into enjoying a procedure they previously hated.

This counter-conditioning (retraining) will take time but the results are very rewarding and can change the way your pet thinks about their veterinary visits making life happier for the owner and pet and safer for those handling a fearful animal.

THE deepening winter has added to snowfalls across the region, and there are plenty of exciting events happening this week.

Hotham is holding the Hotham Junior Freeride Series on July 25,the Cheese and Crackered Rail Jam. On July 25-26, Hotham will see the Ski Club Race Weekend, where competitors compete for their club and also take on all comers in exciting racing events.

Also happening at Hotham this weekend are the Victorian Biathlon Championships, with entrants competing in a gruelling sprint format to earn a spot in the Australian championships at Hotham later this season.

Tomorrow, Falls Creek are hosting another of their regular Thursday night show extravaganzas, including fireworks and music.

July 25 sees the running of the Falls Freestyle Series – The Dreamer Slopestyle, which will be hosted in Panorama Terrain Park.

July 25-26 marks the Snow Cross event, on the Route 66 Snowcross Course, which is a

weekend long event for advanced racers, while next week (July 27-31) is the Mim Sodergren Women’s 5 Day program for women to learn new skills and ski with other like minded ladies.

Held over two action-packed days, the event will see sled dog teams from across Australia compete across two challenging courses, with up to 30 teams expected to compete.

Commencing on July 28, participants will complete the race on two set courses: a shorter course designed for two and four dog teams, and a longer course for six and eight dog teams. Held at twilight, teams will begin from the heart of the Village, heading up the Bourke Street ski run and around a course that weaves around the ski area.

Day two will see the six and eight dog teams assemble in the Corn Hill area, a stunning corner of the mountain where they will follow a course along the picturesque trail towards Mt Stirling.

At Mt Buffalo this season, two managed toboggan and snow play areas will be available at Dingo Dell (including a café, visitor area and toilet) and Cresta Valley, and will also have groomed cross country ski trails as well as a large untracked/unmarked area.

Recent weather has pointed towards more snow cover on the mountain.

KALE, FETA AND PUMPKIN PIE Serves 2 Ingredients 300gm (2 cups) peeled, cubed pumpkin (1cm x 1cm) olive oil spray 1/4 bunch kale, shredded (3 cups) 2 spring onions, finely sliced 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup milk 100gm feta, chopped 2 tablespoons grated parmesan 4 sheets filo pastry 2 tablespoons pumpkin seeds (pepitas), optional

Method 1. Spray pumpkin with olive oil and scatter over a baking paper lined oven tray. Bake at 220C for 20-30 minutes or until lightly golden and cooked through.

Place kale in a microwave safe bowl with 1 tablespoon water and microwave for 1 minute or until slightly wilted.

2. Combine pumpkin, kale, spring onions, eggs, milk, feta and parmesan cheese in a bowl. Layer filo sheets in alternating pattern (lengthwise and widthwise), into a 1 litre baking dish, spraying between each layer with olive oil.

3. Pour filling into pastry and fold over excess pastry to enclose pie. Spray with extra oil spray and top with pumpkin seeds.

Bake at 200°C for 30-40 minutes or until cooked through and set.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Floods, 1981 FLOODS swept Wangaratta, causing residents in low lying areas to move out.

The floods were not as disruptive to the city as the floods of 1974, being more on the scale of the 1975 floods.

However, the rain kept falling, and the threat of more flooding was constant.

It was set to be Wangaratta’s wettest winter for over 100 years.

IT’S been raining all day.

The perfect dinner for a cold, wet and rainy night is soft, silky Hainanese chicken.

Delicate, fragrant poached chicken.

Served with onion rice.

Simple and satisfying.

One of my very favourite wet weather meals.

I like to think of it as medicine for the soul.

Method Place chicken in a large saucepan and add coriander roots and stems, spring onions, peppercorns, sliced ginger salt, buttermilk and coconut milk. Bring to the boil.

Immediately reduce heat to a bare simmer, cover saucepan and continue to simmer for 25 minutes.

Remove from heat and leave the chicken in the pot for a further 40 minutes, without lifting the lid.

Wash rice until water runs clear. Drain.

Heat the oils in a saucepan over low heat and add garlic, ginger and onion.

Cook for 15 minutes.

Add rice to the pan and stir-fry for three minutes.

Increase heat to medium-high, add a litre of chicken liquid to rice and bring to the boil.

Reduce heat to a simmer and cook, covered, for 15 minutes.

Remove from heat and let stand for 10 minutes without lifting the lid.

Season with salt and pepper before serving.

WHEN the weather bureau said there was a wild weekend of weather coming, we took them at their word.

They told us there would be two days of heavy rain, hail and very little sunshine, with a polar blast heading our way so cold it would turn you into a pillar of snow if you dared venture outside.

So we braced ourselves, battened down the hatches and prepared to spend the weekend in confinement doing lazy things like reading, playing board games and bingeing on box sets.

But the doomsday forecast actually turned out to be a bit of a fizzer, with the sun even making an unscheduled appearance from behind the clouds.

Employment growth is positive L

abour Force figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics recently show a positive outcome with a rise in employment and the unemployment rate remaining below Budget forecasts.

The unemployment rate has remained relatively steady at 6 per cent and the youth unemployment rate has dropped to 13.3 per cent.

Employment increased by 7300 persons in June, with 24,500 full time jobs created, partially offset by a fall of 17,200 of part time jobs.

The participation rate bumped up at 64.8 per

cent in June, up from 64.5 per cent in October 2014 – meaning more people are either in jobs, or actively trying to participate in the labour market.

Minister for Employment Senator Eric Abetz said the figures are positive and show a strengthening labour market. “This growth has been supported by the Government’s Growing Jobs and Small Business Package, Free Trade Agreements taking effect and infrastructure investment,� Senator Abetz said. “With 120,700 jobs created so far this year and more than a quarter

of a million since the Government came to office, it is clear that the Government’s economic plan to deliver stronger jobs growth is working.�

In 2014, more than 200,000 new jobs were created (200,800).

Jobs growth averaged around 16,700 per month in 2014 (or almost 4,000 new jobs a week), well more than quadruple the average monthly jobs growth in 2013 of just 3600 per month.

Forward indicators for the jobs market are also strong, with another increase in ANZ’s monthly job ads series recorded earlier this week.

Sweet sixteen and democracy I WAS interested in my reading over the past week to see where momentum is building worldwide for a lowering of the voting age from 18 to 16 years.

There are so many things that people under 18 are legally able to do, like leave school, drive a car and of course pay tax on their income.

Australian’s can also enlist in the defence forces, become a parent and, in exceptional circumstances, get permission to marry.

The law permits them to undertake these activities, so why doesn’t the law give them the ability to vote for their and any dependants’ futures?

It is often argued that 16 year olds lack the knowledge about how governments work to enable them to vote, and also the political maturity needed to cast an informed vote.

This may be true, but these problems are not limited to this age group.

Some nations have already made the move, with voting in national and local elections occurring at the age of 16 in Austria, Germany, Norway and The Philippines, to name a few.

Others are in the process of debating the issue.

The last British election saw both the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats commit to a lowering of the voting age to 16.

This followed the successful experiment of granting 16 year olds the right to vote in the referendum on Scottish independence.

It is now expected that the vote will soon be extended to them generally for election to the Scottish Parliament.

Whilst the debate has been on and off in Australia for many years, and with the Northern Territory in the process of becoming a state, they have passed a law providing for the election of a constitutional convention to debate a new constitution.

That law permits 16 and 17 year olds not only to vote, but also to stand for the convention.

In New South Wales, the member for Strathfield, Jodi McKay, called for the parliament to “lead the debate on changing the legal age of voting in NSW to 16 years of age”.

She argued that “the fact that these young people are unable to have an immediate say on the future of education, on TAFE, on the environment, on health services and public transport, I believe does us a disservice”.

I think she has a point, and the time is probably right to start a

community consultation on the best way to move forward.

When I think back to when my children reached voting age, they had so many other things on their plates, like to finish secondary schooling, moving to the big smoke for work and university - they just didn’t have the inclination to get themselves enrolled to vote.

Sixteen and 17 year olds are usually still at home pursuing their education and therefor I believe it would be so much easier to get them to enrol.

The argument for an extension of voting to young people applies when the community is making a long term decision that will shape the future direction of the nation.

That is why 16 year olds were permitted to vote on whether Scotland should split from the United Kingdom.

When Australians vote on changing the constitution, whether it is to recognise Aboriginal people or to become a republic, 16 and 17 year olds should be given a vote.

Constitutional referendums typically involve reforms that extend over decades and young people have a large stake in such questions.

Before you all start wondering what does this have to do with business and finance, have a think about the future representation of the younger brigade in the parliament, and the performance of someone like Wyatt Roy who was elected to the House of Representatives at the tender age of 20.

I am also sure that such a move in the voting age would make a change, firstly in the way the wealth of our nation is distributed at budget time with a shift in emphasis to education and hopefully some restraint on the payments made to exparliamentarians.

As the younger people are more technologically aware and adept to experimentation this could see some rise in our industrial future.
