Second chances By KYLIE WILSON
WEDDINGS, time spent with family, travel, hobbies - the simple stuff of life that most of us take for granted. But 20 years ago, Wangaratta’s Janet Hammond thought she was going to be robbed of all of these things when an inexplicable complication following a breast biopsy procedure saw her liver fail and her health decline rapidly. Undergoing treatment at Melbourne, the 49 year old mum said she was just days from death when an organ donation from a stranger resulted in her receiving a life saving liver transplant. And she has never looked back since. “I am thankful for the donation, without it, I wouldn’t be here today,” she said, relaxing in her Wangaratta garden last week. “At the time, I never thought I’d get home.” Janet said in the months following the transplant, there were painstaking weeks of treatment, and she was initially so weak that she had to learn to walk all over again. But she smiles, saying it was all worth it for the rich experiences she has had in her life during the past two decades. “It changed my attitude to life – you’ve got to live it to the fullest,” she said. “I like to enjoy my life.” Janet has made trips of a lifetime to Canada and New Zealand, seen three of her children get married (her oldest daughter was already married before her transplant), seen her two grandchildren grow up, and been able to devote her time to several community organisations, including Wangaratta Ladies Probus and Northeast Health Wangaratta’s Friends of the Hospital.
