A PASSION for performing, coupled with a drive to get the most out of life, is the motivation for alpine performer Jenny Packham. Even as far back as her school days in the 1970s Jenny loved drama and even considered applying for NIDA, but was discouraged by her career advisor. “I listened, and did secretarial administration work and hospitality most of my working life, but I was always a frustrated thespian,” she said. “There were other mums who were obviously frustrated creatively and I came up with the name Frustrated Artistic Mothers.” Helping with her children Ellie and Liam’s school productions and spending a few years with Bright Alpine Actors (BAA) were a great creative outlet for Jenny, but her life took a dramatic turn in 2011 when her husband Roger passed away suddenly, aged just 47. She said the tragedy rocked her family and her tight knit community. “Pieta Swann (The Other Theatre Co) was living here in Bright then and we were part of BAA, we had a performance commitment for Bright’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations that Easter,” Jenny said. “Pieta and Sharelle Channon carried me through that numbing phase of grief,” she said, adding that she threw herself into a cleaning job at the time with a friend to help support herself. “Performing was all I had ever wanted to do as a kid so I thought, ‘If you can’t get motivated to do what you said you loved, Jen, what’s life all about then?’ “After Rog, it was another reminder that life is too short, so I followed my passion.” She enrolled in the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS), which saw her form the alpine based FAM Events and Productions. continued page |

Bare rooted berries THE winter months of June, July and August are the best times for planting deciduous trees and shrubs as this gives them time to establish before the hot summer months. A wide range of roses, ornamental and fruit trees are available as bare rooted, dug up while dormant, with the soil removed and shipped to nurseries ready for planting. One of the advantages of buying bare rooted plants is the cost. Because they are bare rooted and not in pots, they are easily transported in bulk, reducing the cost to the nursery and customers. It is also the only time of the year such an extensive variety of fruit and ornamental trees are available. Traditional fruit trees, including apples, apricots, cherries, nectarines, peaches, pears and plums are available, but there is also a wide variety of less common plants including, nuts, grapevines and berries. Bovine cancer eye “CANCER eye� (Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma) is the most common form of cancer in cattle. It is essentially a skin cancer occurring on the eyelids, third eyelid and eyeball and estimates of its prevalence vary form 1-20 per cent in some herds. The disease occurs almost exclusively in cattle with areas of unpigmented skin around the eyes, with breeds including Herefords, Poll Herefords and Friesians being the most susceptible. Cancer eye has been shown to be moderately heritable in that skin pigmentation and facial conformation is heritable. Cancer eye begins as a small, pink, proliferative growth, although there may be some crusty, scabby precursors if it is on one of the eyelids (usually the lower one).
Ocular cancers may remain the same size for many months but then begin to grow rapidly in all directions forming grotesque, putrid masses that can become infected and fly struck. The cancers can also grow inward and although cancer eyes do not metastasize (spread in the blood) quickly, they do tend to be locally invasive spreading into the surrounding tissue and lymphatic vessels. It is regarded as an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to allow a cancer eye to develop to the advanced stages and owners failing to cull or treat such animals may face prosecution if the animal is not immediately treated or destroyed. Many cases of bovine cancer eye can be treated quite successfully by a veterinarian especially if treated early using

The group’s first production, the Muddling Magician, had family connections, having been written by Roger’s grandmother Marjorie Randle, an author of children’s plays and books in the UK. Jenny said she aimed to give, others, especially women and parents, a creative outlet, and the process had been unforgettable so far. “What I discovered from these funny, intelligent women is that we all have challenges to face in life, and that collaborating the way we do brings incredible benefits,� she said. “By providing an outlet for creativity we tap into something special and are stronger mentally for the shared experience. “Physical activity is important for mental health, and you need to be physically fit for performance. “So sport and the arts really are of equal importance and should be funded accordingly.� Some of her performance highlights of the past few years have included adopting male garb to play the
extroverted Mario Royale in Sideshow Alley, and playing the dramatic role of Evelyn Davies, a mother whose son goes to fight in Gallipoli in a play called On the Home Front. Community performances including some for the Hawthorne Village aged care facility have also been memorable times for Jenny and her team, and she added that FAM Events and Productions will be touring a number of projects in the near future. Another active member of the group is Pauline Thompson, who met Jenny through Bright Alpine Actors, and is passionate about both acting and writing for performance. “I just find when I write, I’m drawing from life’s experience, and that gives me a lot of joy,� she said. Pauline said that the group was a thriving creative team environment and all involved are “terrific�. “It keeps me busy, it keeps my mind active,� she said. “You get a chance to be somebody else, so you can take it as far as you want.�

Fun season ahead AT Falls Creek, there is much anticipation for the beginning of the Renault Night Show series, which will kick off on Thursday, June 30 and continue on Thursday nights throughout July and August. Falls Creek will also host the Snow Trek and Travel Mini Series one on June 26, which are ski racing events designed for junior skiers. The first race of the series, snow permitting, will start at 11am in the Nordic Bowl, and people should keep an eye out for the remaining races in this year’s series, run by the Telemark Nordic Ski Club. Mt Hotham will host their Brand New Day event on Saturday, June 25, which is designed for people brand new to snowsports and features bargain price lift passes and equipment hire. “We want to share our love of snowsports and remove some of the barriers people face when trying what is a new and unfamiliar activity,” said Belinda Trembath, general manager of Mt Hotham Skiing Company. Mt Buller is primed for a busy winter season with record numbers of children registered for “Snow Squad” ski and
snowboard programs and season membership sales the highest ever reported for the resort. Mt Buller will be a hive of activity this week, with the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour screening taking place at the Mt Buller Cinema this Saturday. The tour features a collection of exciting and inspiring films, covering everything from skiing and snowboarding to the alpine environment. Little ones will be spoiled for choice, with the mountain hosting the Yoplait Petit Miam Kids’ Week between June 27 and July 1, including kids’ shows and movies, a carnival day, indoor activities and much more. Mt Buffalo remains a family friendly snow alternative, with the Dingo Dell Café/Visitor Centre making a cosy retreat.

THE first thing that catches your eye about Billy Button Wines is the golden band of flowers that graces the label. It’s bright, it’s distinguishable from far away and it’s so damn warm and cheerful. On an icy cold day in the Alpine Valley it’s the kind of thing that makes you smile, especially when a golden sun is starting to break through the clouds. After a week of chunky pasta dishes, sticky lamb shanks and a very tasty beef, sweet potato and chickpea casserole, I’m kind of over “hearty” and leaning toward “healthy”. With some flathead fillets in the eski, I figure the Billy Button Arneis will be just what the doctor ordered. Lifeline for retired politicians IN an article a couple of weeks ago, I talked about how our politicians received travel allowances and the like, and how unfair it seemed to be. Across my desk this week came an article written by Dr Dale Kerwin of the School of Education from Mt Gravatt campus of Griffith University, saying change the entitlements. As a self-funded retiree he says that if a pension isn’t an entitlement, neither are the parliamentary perks paid to our federal politicians. We continually are told that paying us an aged pension isn’t sustainable, but when you read further you will see that what politicians - past, present and future - are receiving from ordinary Australians paying income tax. If the age of entitlement is over, the politicians should purchase their own retirement plan, just as most other working Australians are expected to do.

I am sure that most of us do not realise that politicians have a privileged health care system, much more generous than what ordinary Australians participate in. While Dr Kerwin advocates that all contracts with past and present politicians become void from December 31 this year, I do not think this is an option. But I do agree with his sentiments, that the Australian people did not agree to provide perks to politicians - that burden was thrust upon them. Politicians devised all these contracts to benefit themselves at an astronomical cost to the Australian people. Serving in Parliament should be an honour, not a career as the Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so they should serve their term(s) then go home and back to work.

So you aged persons out there should be up in arms about payments made to our politicians upon retirement.
