ONE hundred years after thousands of Australian soldiers fought for their country in muddy trenches in Gallipoli and beyond, the Anzac legend and the sacrifice thousands of Australian soldiers have made in war ever since continues to intrigue, fascinate and even inspire debate.

The toll war takes on not only soldiers, but everyone from family members to refugees, is the inspiration behind an original theatre production being staged in Bright this month.

War In Pieces, devised by Bright’s Ernie Glass, has been a labor of love for the retired drama teacher and director, who has spent the last few years putting together theatre pieces as part of MAD AS (Music And Drama And Stuff ) Productions.

“We took on all the elements of what war does,” Ernie said.

“We get a feel for the innocent victims of war.”

While the production features an array of pieces - from songs written by Australian performers such as Eric Bogle and Judy Smalls, to poems and letters - it is set in an antique shop to tie all pieces together.

“We’ve put it in this setting to allow audiences a journey,” Ernie said, reflecting on the long hours spent researching with Bright Historical Society and Bright RSL (one piece of dialogue was written by an RSL member), as well as relevant history and plays inspired by war. continued page |

SOME of the simplest plants to grow are members of the succulent family.

They are also some of the best plants for growing in pots.

They can be put together to make interesting arrangements in pots and containers, creating beautiful mini gardens that will last years.

Because they store water in their fleshy leaves, stems and roots, succulents require little water and care, thriving on neglect. They are perfect low maintenance plants.

There are literally hundreds of succulents and cacti in a wide array of colors, shapes, textures and sizes.

There are ground covers which spread, low flat growing succulents which multiply and fill pots, upright succulents and cactus growing from 20cm to 200cm high and succulents with beautiful flowerlike leaf arrangements.

Succulents, including sempervivum, sedums, aloes, kalanchoes and echeverias come in colors ranging from greens to reds, yellows, blues, silvers and purple-blacks.

Succulents can be grown in containers and pots of all shapes and sizes provided there are drainage holes in the bottom.

They have a shallow root system so don’t need much root depth and prefer wide shallow containers.

Succulents need a very well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging and the roots rotting, so add some sand and small gravel to ordinary potting mix to improve the drainage or use a

Preventing cancer by desexing female puppies

“I’ve learnt a lot, particularly the women’s side of things.

“It’s a collage of war.

“It’s more about a universal sense of Australia’s involvement in war over the past 100 years.”

Ernie said he wanted to examine the subject while respecting what everyone involved in war goes through.

“It’s not glorifying war,” he said.

“It’s anti-war in one respect, but it’s not discrediting the commitment, passion and loss that the soldiers put into it.

“We have to find a way to strive for peace.

“But there are times when a country has to stand up against an evil essence, such as Hitler.”

Ernie is no stranger to the sacrifices of war, with his grandfather having fought in World War I, his father in World War II and some of his uncles fighting in Korea.

But he didn’t learn about his relatives’ experience of war until much later in life.

“Those generations didn’t talk about their experiences,” he said.

“They bottled all that up.”

Well-known local musician and producer Rudi Katterl, also part of MAD AS Productions, said he had enjoyed working on the piece as well, particularly working with the musicians.

He is no stranger to local theatre, having written some of the songs and incidental music for the 2014 locally written production of Heroes, which was performed by The Other Theatre Company.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Rudi said of the production process for War in Pieces.

“Ernie is a very experienced director.”

War in Pieces will be performed at the Bright Courthouse on April 24, 25, and 30, and May 1 and 2 at 7.30pm and on Sunday, April 26 at 2pm.

WHEN there’s a new puppy in the family there is a plethora of things to think about, from diet and socialising to training and establishing a health care plan to ensure a healthy puppyhood and adult life.

Amongst the many considerations will be whether to have your dog desexed as it approaches adolescence, which is generally around five or six months of age, but can be towards 12 months for larger breeds.

New owners are often excited by the idea of having a litter of pups themselves once their new dog is old enough, before making this decision.

For female dogs, the desexing procedure involves an ovariohysterectomy (surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus), so clearly it is not an option in bitches for whom future breeding is intended.

But what about female dogs that are not going to bear a litter?

For these animals surgical desexing may be a wise choice to make early.

Apart from the obvious ability to eliminate the risk of unwanted pregnancies, elective desexing has several advantages.

Perhaps most significant of these is the dramatic reduction in lifetime risk of breast cancers (mammary neoplasia).

These cancers represent about half of all tumors seen in female dogs and tend to affect older animals.

The protective effect of desexing is gained when the procedure is performed early in the dog’s life.

Bitches that are neutered or desexed before their first season are very unlikely to develop mammary cancers, with a lifetime risk around 0.5 per cent (almost negligible), which is equivalent to that for male dogs.

If surgery is performed after the first heat, but before the second, the risk of developing breast cancer increases.

After the second oestrus cycle, around 2.5 years of age, the protective benefit of desexing is lost, and the risk of mammary neoplasia arising at some point in the dog’s lifetime is around 25 per cent.

This means that one in four adult female dogs that are not desexed around the time of their adolescence are at risk of developing potentially preventable cancers.

About half of these breast cancers

are malignant, meaning they are likely to grow rapidly and may spread to other parts of the body, such as the lungs.

The rest are benign and less likely to invade the surrounding body parts or to spread elsewhere.

It can be difficult to distinguish between these tumor types, so once masses in the mammary tissue are detected, vets will often recommend surgical removal of the mass and sometimes surrounding breast tissue.

Tumor size is the most important guide to the likelihood of cancer recurrence after surgery and long term survival, with the best outcome for masses smaller than 3cm.

Although there are many things to consider when contemplating whether and at what age to desex your new pup, the ability to prevent breast cancer should be one important factor to weigh up.

FRESH FLUSH: Widespread rainfall last weekend should lead to improved fishing conditions in the region’s smaller trout streams this week.

AT last we have finally seen some decent widespread rainfall across North East Victoria.

The mountainous areas of the catchments received well over 100mm in many areas while down in the lowlands falls of 30-50mm were widespread.

You can pretty much forget about chasing Murray cod in the rivers for a while now, with the exception being the Murray River where dirty water run-off may settle in lakes Hume and Mulwala and what water does run into

the Murray via the Ovens and Kiewa rivers should be diluted to a fair degree.

My advice to anybody wanting to chase Murray cod over the next week or two is to head to the Murray River downstream of Lake Mulwala.

There have been a few cod caught down there in recent weeks but it has been pretty tough going.

That area should not be as affected by last weekend’s rainfall.

The upside to this rain is that the trout will be going absolutely nuts at the moment.

Having sat in the bottom of their deep holes for quite some time now, riding out the hot and dry conditions, this fresh flush of cold water will drive the trout to disperse in their streams

and go on some kind of a feeding frenzy as they build up to begin their annual spawning migration upstream.

Also, with this extra water there is no doubt that many brown trout are now making their way upstream to spawn.

Now is the time of year when the trout are the most active.

Popular fishing spots that see a lot of fishing pressure can produce great trout as the fish move upstream from the harder to get to places.

The Ovens and Mitta Mitta rivers have been fishing well for a while now, but with this fresh influx of water the smaller streams should come to life.

If you know a small stream that has trout in it, but has been quite low, now is the time to fish it.

AS mentioned in last week’s column here is a warm salad where you can use that sesame-miso vinaigrette.

If you have a few people to feed, you can always add more prawns and vegetables to bulk up the dish, instead of using ½ the vinaigrette use all of it.

Now prepare the hokkien noodles by immersing in boiling water for a few minutes to separate, then drain.

Heat oil in a hot pan (220 C) and toss in red onion, fry for two minutes.

Add the green prawns and cook for two minutes.

Then toss in the remaining vegetables, garlic and ginger, fry for one minute.

Continue to stir-fry these for another five minutes.

Now throw in the drained hokkien noodles and mix through, add the cubed tofu (if using) and half the sesame vinaigrette, cook for another 3-5 minutes.

Is stress the cause of your skin symptoms?

About ‘ruddy’ time we had some action

STRESS is often associated with low mood or bad tempers and irritability, but stress can cause physical symptoms like skin reactions in many people too.

Have you ever felt like your heart is beating too fast or had chest pain, only to discover that there is nothing wrong when you have a heart check up?

Do you experience a bloated and queasy tummy, even though every gut test says you are fine?

Are you constantly tired and feeling like your memory is somewhere else – maybe with the keys you have misplaced?

Have you noticed flare ups of eczema or acne soon after stressful periods?

Most people I talk to tend to have a specific ‘stress holding pattern’ which will dictate where their body chooses to store stress.

Sometimes they don’t even know they are stressed, they just feel a little ‘off balance’ and then along comes a flare up of psoriasis, or eczema.

An interesting point to consider, if you have experienced any of the above symptoms is that mood receptors are found in every organ of the body.

STRESS: We all know the impact that high stress levels can have on your mood, but what about skin problems?

This is why some people experience stress in their tummy, others hold onto stress in their muscles and some of us have our skin fall apart under stress.

Learning about your own stress pattern and creating a plan so you can identify it early can be a great way to deal with your ‘unusual symptoms’.

As the skin is one of the largest organs in our body and is influenced by stress receptors, temperature, food reactions and bacterial imbalance, stress management plays a vital role in healthy skin function.

Steps you can take if you think stress is

contributing to your skin reactions: - see your naturopath to determine if stress is a cause; - identify what is contributing to your stress – can you change anything?

- use your food to support healthy skin and nervous system to reduce skin reactions; - have a food intolerance test to determine if foods are contributing to your skin stress and inflammation; and/or - try some breathing exercises or natural medicines to reduce the stress and support your skin.

I HAVE been so pleased to read, not only in our local paper, but the Melbourne based newspapers, that we are almost certain to see a cap on municipal rates from next year.

I am sure ratepayers throughout the North East, who all experienced rises well above the inflation rate in 2014/2015, will welcome the news.

Mansfield with an average rise of 4.2 per cent seemed to be the lowest with Moira at 5.5 per cent and Wangaratta at 6 per cent topping the table.

I know the cost to Wangaratta ratepayers was horrendous with the dismissal of the council and the payout of contracts to senior officers, but I do not believe that is the root of our problems.

I think there is too much ‘empire building’ going on in local government which is detrimental to ratepayers everywhere.

I can remember some 25 years ago (before Jeff Kennett) councils were pestered by government to set up community health services and Wangaratta got Ovens & King Community Health.

I can remember at the time this service was to take over all the health and community issues from council, including HACC funding and the like.

Yes, I am sure the service (now Gateway Health) has made some great gains in the community in the provision of services, but how much is duplicated by the council?

A leading Wangaratta businessman said to me the other day, “Councils should be there to collect rates, receive government grants and be responsible for roads, recreation and culture, garbage collection, planning, and parks and gardens. Why do we need a director of community wellbeing collecting an executive salary with an army of helpers organising all sorts of supposed ‘cultural events’ for minority groups”.

I concur with his sentiments.

The organisational structure of the Rural City of Wangaratta lists in addition to the CEO and four directors, another 15 managers.

I can recall when I read the September 2014 quarterly report of the rural city there were six

Perhaps the number of empty shops in Wangaratta is contributed to by the high level of rates, which could also be a contributor to a reduction in the spending power of residents?

I note with interest the Alpine Shire in its HR review (January 2015) were able to reduce equivalent full time staff positions from 84 to 59 and even though council was carrying no debt, mayor Jan Vonarx said council was overstaffed in a number of areas.

She said as council was receiving less income from Federal Assistance Grants, it was important that cost cutting methods were put in place.

Indigo Shire mayor Bernard Gaffney has said the review of council undertaken by the Victorian Electoral Commission would mean the cost of the review would need to be taken from other areas to pay for it.

But Wangaratta, as reported in the Wangaratta Chronicle last week, is still trying to find ways to cut expenditure.

With the Essential Services Commission (ESC) being appointed to conduct a review, they will provide transparency and responsibility in respect of rate increases for local residents, at the same time providing sustainability in the sector.

I know it is the wish of the Rural City of Wangaratta to have a rate increase of six per cent again this year - I wonder if the three administrators can put up a solid case of ‘special circumstances’ for this to occur?

Perhaps the time is right for a review of the services provided in the rural city and how every time you read the newspaper there is a never heard of before name cropping up as ‘project co-ordinator’?

My mind boggles as to staffing levels.
