IT takes its name from a hard fought and deadly polo match in one of Banjo Paterson’s most famous poems. But although it is fiercely competitive, the Geebung Polo match is a much loved, family friendly event at Dinner Plain that continues to attract ever larger crowds. Experienced horseman David Olsson, who divides his time between Barnawartha and Benambra, has been in the saddle as part of the event for most of its 28 year history. Originally a regular rider in the Omeo Rodeo, Mr Olsson said the match has evolved from being an event related to the rodeo to its own entity, and added that the players originally took part in a polocrosse game before it became a polo match. “We just stuck at it,” Mr Olsson said of himself and his team of fellow high country cattlemen riders, known as The Geebungs, who range from 40 to 70 years old. The team does battle with the urban Cuff ‘n Collars team. “They wear helmets and face guards, we just wear Akubra hats,” Mr Olsson said. “There’s no umpire. “If the ball goes out of bounds, the crowd just picks it up and throws it back.” Mr Olsson said that while The Geebungs do little formal training for the Easter Sunday match, they each keep up their skills on their own properties and get together at Benambra on Good Friday each year to have a quick training session, talk strategy and have a social catch up. “We have a comradeship we’ve built up over the years,” Mr Olsson said. He keeps in condition for the polo match by chasing brumbies and hitting polo balls on his own property. continued page |

Consumers want more Organic sprays from energy retailers ENERGY Consumers Australia recently published the results of its second bi-annual survey of the attitudes and activity of household and small business energy consumers. Energy Consumers Australia CEO Rosemary Sinclair said the survey of 2300 consumers, undertaken during August and September 2016, showed that energy consumers are seeing mixed results. “As we found in the first survey, consumers are telling us that overall they are satisfied with their electricity and gas services,” Ms Sinclair said. “Consumers in the states such New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria where the market has been opened up to competition and retail prices have been deregulated for some time continue to report the highest levels of overall satisfaction. “However, households and small businesses across Australia are again telling us that the value for money of their electricity services ranks behind gas and all other utility services, including banking, mobile phones and internet services. “And while some consumers are taking advantage of competition to get better value for money, the majority are not shopping around and switching to get a better deal. “Understanding why such a high number of households and small businesses do not appear to be actively engaging in the market is a

AS we aim to become more sustainable for the good of the planet, the soil, the plants, the bugs and ourselves, the use of chemicals needs to be reduced or replaced altogether with organic based practices. As further incentive, these organic products can be made at home using basic household ingredients. Better still, they don’t hurt the hip pocket. Oil spray Combine 250ml of vegetable oil and 60ml of dishwashing liquid together to make an oil concentrate. To use, add 15ml (about a tablespoon) of the mixture to a litre of water, put in a spray bottle and spray the plant all over, including the underside of leaves. Oils suffocate scale and mites. Soap spray Fill a spray bottle with water and 2-3 per cent washing up detergent. Spray over affected areas. This will kill heavy infestations of aphids quickly. It can be reapplied every five days if needed, but should be washed off in between treatments to reduce damage to the plants. Garlic spray deterrent Steep four cloves of crushed garlic with one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid in one litre of boiling water and two tablespoons of cooking oil for 24 hours, then strain and bottle.

This spray is very effective in deterring insects like caterpillars and aphids due to its strong smell and stinging ability. Don’t get it in your eyes though. Discard mixture after two weeks. Milk spray fungicide This is great for controlling black spot on roses, powdery mildew and sooty mould. Mix one part full cream milk to 10 parts water. Spray upper and lower surfaces of leaves once every fortnight. Reapply after rain or irrigation. Ant control Fill a spray bottle with water and add 10–15 drops of peppermint essential oil and spray where the ants walk. They won’t cross the sprayed area as they hate the smell. A warning, it can be harmful to cats. Weed control Pour boiling hot water on weeds and they will shrivel in a few days. For weeds with long tap roots, like dandelions, dock and plantain, douse in vinegar. Happy organic gardening.

Chronic toenail breakage SOME dogs seem to be very good at catching their toenails on things and pulling them off, but there may be an underlying weakness to the nails that contributes to this phenomenon. A disease called lupoid onychodystrophy is a rare occurrence in dogs but is seen a few times each year in our clinic. The disease is auto-immune in nature where the dog’s own immune system wrongly targets the tissues of the nail beds. This leads to weak attachments to the nails, crumbling dry nails and repetitive nail bed infections or dislodged toenails. It often presents as repetitive toenail injuries, limping or ongoing licking at the feet. It can affect all four feet or be somewhat patchy, with some toes appearing to be OK. It is not a disease that can be cured as the body’s willingness to
continue attacking the nail beds will continue for life. However, with some time and treatment successful management can be initiated to strengthen the attachment of the claws and improve the quality of the toenail material being produced. Ideally immune modulation is achieved without the use of long term cortisone. The antibiotic doxycycline is also used as an immune modulator to prevent the wrongful damage to the nail beds. In conjunction with Vitamin B3 supplementation, Omega 3 and 6 oil supplementation (from fish oil and evening primrose oil) and regular trimming of the nails to prevent breaks successful management can be achieved. EASTER FUN: The action of the Geebung Polo match attracts thousands to the high country each year.
He said being involved in the match requires good horsemanship, as well as a high level of hand-eye coordination and balance, saying it helped motivate him to keep his skills sharp. “It keeps you active,” he said. “Our horses are either used for chasing brumbies or stock-work, so they go where we want them to go.” Now aged 57, Mr Olsson said he loved taking part in the match each year and being cheered on by the assembled crowds – which can number in the thousands – is invigorating. “I’m glad to help keep it alive, and keep the traditions alive,” he said of the match. He added that the event was a family affair, with his son and daughter regularly involved with it as well. High country identity Ken Connley has been the captain of the team for 28 years and said that while it is a “pretty tough” match, he relishes its
competitive nature. “It’s just a challenge of beating the city people,” he said. “There’s a hell of a lot of cheering. “It’s a great spectacle.” He added that his nephew is also part of the event. Mr Connley has decades of experience with horses and riding, including working as a riding double in Australian movies for actors including Tom Selleck, Bryan Brown and Jack Thompson, and said he feels at home riding horses and catching brumbies. The Geebung Polo match takes place on Sunday, April 16 at Cobungra Station and as well as the game, features an array of family friendly activities. ‘All or nothing’ when catching cod in autumn THE amazing Murray cod fishing we have seen all summer in the Wangaratta area continues to blow my mind as this recent period of stable weather has led to some of the best Murray cod fishing that I have ever seen. I have always said that autumn can be an ‘all or nothing’ time of year for Murray cod fishing. In the last two weeks I have had three fishless trips and two of my best trips for the season, which has enforced my ‘all or nothing’ belief. On Saturday evening Brett Corker and I fished close to Wangaratta. Out of respect for the property owner who kindly gives us access to the river through their private property I will not be naming the exact location, but I will say we were

within 10 minutes of the Wangaratta CBD. Within half an hour of arriving, we had caught an 80cm Murray cod each. Normally an 80cm cod would be the biggest fish for the night, but Brett had to go one up on me by catching an 81cm cod five minutes after I did. It was absolutely amazing - an evening we will be talking about for years to come. Both of our large Murray cod were caught on spinnerbaits, and we also
caught one small cod. Across the board it has been a similar story. I have seen people on social media questioning why they are not catching fish, yet other people boasting of their great catches. This ‘all or nothing’ autumn Murray cod fishing is not new, and is typical for this time of the year. My best advice is to not give up if you have a quiet day, because the next day may just be your best. Also just quickly, Lake Mulwala has been fishing exceptionally well again this week with stacks of reports of Murray cod, including some very large fish coming in. It is certainly shaping up to be a fantastic autumn of Murray cod fishing down there.

Autumn lawn care tips for the homeowner AS the welcome temperature changes this autumn, so too should your lawn care. Even self-proclaimed turf masters can be thrown by the onset of autumn – your lawn’s growth rate slows, and patches of brittle or limp looking grass can appear. Ross Boyle, president of Turf Australia, explains that pH imbalances in soil can often be blamed for unhealthy looking turf, and why autumn is the ideal time to identify and correct this issue. “Soil pH levels that are too acidic or too alkaline impair how well your turf absorbs vital nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium,” he said. “Ideally your soil should sit between 6 and 8 on the pH scale. “Autumn is perfect for testing soil pH because any fertiliser or lime added to correct an imbalance works best if allowed to decompose through winter,” he said. Fortunately, testing soil pH is quick and easy, and gives you the answers you need to fix turf that may need some invigoration. Here’s a step-by-step guide to testing the pH of your soil: 1. Gear up You can pick up a soil pH testing kit (which includes a liquid pH indicator, a white powder and a pH colour chart) for about $20 from your local turf farmer, hardware store or nursery. You will also need a teaspoon and a clean white surface like a spare tile or old plate. 2. Grab your samples Pick two or three spots across the lawn to obtain your soil samples from. Choose a patch that appears to be thriving, and another that looks a

Molybdenum mine, 1916 ONE of the North East’s most unusual mines was put into war service. A reef of molybdenum ore had been discovered near the surface of the ground, on the property of Dan Diffey, near Everton. Molybdenum was a valuable raw material. It was used for hardening steel, and its wartime price soared to over £500 per ton. The mine was worked intermittently in the years following the war, but by then, world prices had fallen dramatically.

Chocolate Easter Truffles IF you’re looking to create some home made treats for the special people in your life this Easter, this tempting recipe for Chocolate Easter Truffles could be just the thing. These truffles can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to two weeks. BODY-ART enthusiasts, there’s something new to get excited about. The boffins at MIT and Microsoft research have done it again and invented tattoos that will allow you to control your smartphone, computer, or other electronic devices. Graduate student from MIT, Cindy Kao, and her co-workers at DuoSkin have designed and prototyped the tattoos using simple, everyday materials - imitation gold leaf and temporary transfer paper. In addition to cheap materials, the tattoos are easy to design using software like Adobe illustrator or even Microsoft Paint, and also cheap to print, using a vinyl cutter, all of which is readily accessible to the general public. Because of this, DuoSkin seems set to break away from the specialised and more expensive skin electronics that use conductive carbon and silver, yet offer a product that is every bit as effective. Inspired by trendy body art you would see at festivals like Coacella, Kao’s tattoos are both stylish and offer excellent practical applications such as being able to control the volume setting on your phone, or select a playlist of music. You can even wear tattoos that store information via a tiny chip attached to a tattoo circuit that effectively acts as a QR code allowing people to instantly transfer information to one another.

Combined with augmented reality, I can see the possibilities that this body art could unlock, the least of which being a whole new means of communication. So, how does this all work? Well that’s the crazy thing.
It’s elementary, dear Watson, both figuratively and literally. Copper and gold, the primary elements in imitation gold leaf, are excellent conductors of electricity. Being both metals, they have electrons that are free to move,
which is fundamentally what electric current is - electrons running along a wire. These metals are also malleable, which means they can be hammered down to very thin sheets, a property that is very desirable for anything
you’re going to wear on your skin. Given this, it seems obvious that gold leaf should be used for skin electronics. But that’s often the hallmark of the greatest inventions in science they are obvious in hindsight.
