TEN years ago Beechworth’s Peter Leppert was living through one of the worst times of his life. After his marriage ended, and he lost his job, and had to sell the marital home, he was stuck in what he described as a “whirlpool of depression and helplessness”. But despite the dark times, he found solace, renewed faith and help through his friend Fred Gollasch in nationwide organisation called Better Blokes Ministry, and by being involved in reaching out to fellow men in crisis himself. “I gave all my blackness and depression to God, and asked him to help unburden me as I was unable to find a way out myself, and he just lifted me up so high, and I have never looked back,” Peter said. His zeal for supporting other men in their lives and encouraging them to support each other through crises remains a key focus to this day. He said the Better Blokes Ministry, originally established by Mr Gollasch, has been helping him and other men for the last seven years, and there are now “Men’s Shed Happens” groups all over Australia. Ministry camp events have also seen a number of influential speakers, including Ian “Watto” Watson, author of books such as “Every Bloke’s A Champion, Even You”, and “Champion Blokes Shed Their Shame”, which Peter said are both “highly readable short books written for Aussie blokes”. “Watto’s mantra is ‘I have never seen a man go backwards with encouragement’, which works in every aspect of life,” he said. Peter said by attending one of the ministry’s annual camps seven years ago he renewed his passion for life. He has now remarried, has a new life, and has participated in events for Mens Ministry with his friend “Watto” near Lake Eildon, Finley and Deniliquin. continued page |

What’s in your garden: Our garden is a mix of native and exotic plant species. The aim was to provide a habitat for local birds, lizards and frogs. It is a pleasant place to enjoy in all seasons. It demonstrates what can be achieved on a blank canvas in a relatively short time period. We are pleased to open our three and a half year old garden as a work in progress, along with four other lovely Everton gardens, as a fundraiser for the upgrade of our community hall. Tickets and a map for the viewing of the five gardens, plus afternoon tea are available at a
cost of $10 (children under 12 are free) from the Everton Store on the Great Alpine Road. What do you enjoy about gardening: We enjoy the challenge gardening throws at us. The biggest challenge is the extremes of frosts and dry heat. The garden provides us with a relaxing healthy hobby which we can both participate in and enjoy. Favourite plant/spot in your garden: Although we don’t have just one favourite spot, we do enjoy overlooking our ponds in the evening, listening to the frogs and watching the small birds refresh themselves.
Water saving/conservation tip: Water saving and mulching play a big part in our garden design. Our aim has been to minimise water runoff and loss from our property by rainwater capture from roods and the use of swales and drainage pits. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Our tips for a good garden are regular upkeep in the form of weeding, and tip pruning of native shrubs after flowering. Further, if possible, provide adequate watering during extended dry periods. Even natives need some water during summer to keep them healthy.

ONE native plant that is always popular is the Callistemon, commonly known as Bottlebrush. There are over 40 species, so named because the flowers resemble brushes used to clean bottles. Callistemon are in flower now. Their showy flower spikes are actually many individual flowers, often tipped with yellow pollen. The original Callistemon species had bold red flowers but flower colours now include pinks, mauves, creams and greens. They have a long flowering period continuing into summer with some varieties blooming through to autumn. Callistemon are hardy evergreen plants, ranging in size from small growing groundcovers, through to shrubs and trees. They prefer a well-drained slightly moist soil but can tolerate periods of drought and most are frost tolerant. They flower best in full sun or filtered light. They require little maintenance. Tip prune occasionally to encourage bushiness and prune the stems back to behind the flower spikes after flowering has finished. Feed with a low phosphorous native fertiliser in spring and autumn and mulch to help retain moisture. Callistemon ‘Little John’ is a groundcover growing to under 1m. It has blood red flowers and grey green leaves. Callistemon ‘Candle Glow’ grows to between 0.5 - 1m and has bright lemon

Snake season is here SPRING is definitely here and along with it, we have snakes out from hibernation. Unfortunately we cannot educate our animals not to play with snakes but the next best thing is to reduce their risk if possible and be aware of the warning signs of a fatal envenomation. The most common species of venomous snakes in the north east Victoria region are brown, tiger, red-bellied black snakes and copperheads. Of these the brown snakes can kill the quickest – sometimes within minutes of envenomation. Tiger snakes can also kill very quickly. Pets bitten by red-bellied black snakes can be unwell for a couple of days before veterinary attention is sought – but has the highest risk of long-term health implications. Immediately after being bitten by a snake, your pet may momentarily collapse, vomit, salivate, urinate or defecate, and then may appear to recover completely. These signs are indicative of a fatal envenomation and
immediate transport to your nearest veterinary clinic is recommended. Other signs animals may show are paralysis or weakness, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, reduced appetite and discoloured urine. Costs relating to treatment of snake bite patients can be high, ranging from a straightforward, good response envenomation of about $1500 up to $5000+. This relates to the use of expensive anti-venom and the level of intensive care some patients require. Some patients require life support (being on a ventilator) for days. The prognosis for full recovery is different for every snake bite case – factors that affect survival probability include species of snake, species of animal bitten, time of year, amount of venom injected, time between envenomation and treatment, number of bites and the general health of the patient. Snakes are often in high numbers around bodies of water – creeks, rivers and lakes. We recommended walking
your dog on a leash and staying on designated pathways. Most veterinary clinics have a vet on call available 24 hours, 365 days a year. If your animal has been bitten or if you suspect they may be showing signs suggestive of envenomation, contact them immediately. Please note that you should never assume the vet will be immediately available for your case, so ensure they are advised you are coming in. His commitment to helping his fellow man has also extended to being involved with local chapters of the Men’s Shed program. “These organisations are helping blokes realise they’re not alone, and build mateship and a support network,” Peter said. “We can all encourage each other.” He said that during his involvement in both organisations, he has seen many men being able to restore their lives, feel better about themselves and communicate better with their friends and loved ones. He smiles as he recalls The Better Blokes Network Australia wide, being able to help raise money for a friend who had lost his daughter, to help him pay for the funeral and lessen his financial strain during a time of grief. Peter said that men in Australia are continually faced with challenges and can often fail to deal with shame that holds them back in their lives. “It can stop us from living the lives we were meant to live,” he said. He said problems like the drug ‘ice’ and domestic violence were
among the biggest challenges facing Australian men. He said perpetrators of domestic violence often had less emotional maturity, coupled with a lack of a father or strong male role models in their formative years. “Every boy needs a strong and steadfast male role model in their life,” Peter said. “Other men may reach a mental health or identity crisis by putting all their sense of self worth in their self image and their careers, which can have a devastating impact if they lose their job, and with it their identity and security. “Time is finite and you’ve got to make good use of it.” He said men can suffer from the fact that many Australian ‘rites of passage’ into manhood involve excessive alcohol consumption and casual sex, as seen each year at “Schoolies” on the Gold Coast. “We need young men to be mentored by older men,” Peter said. The recent hot weather has started to slow the trout fishing down, and heat the redfin fishing up.
Still good lake fishing THIS is by far the easiest time of the year to be a fishing columnist as there are so many fish biting in so many places. Last week I fished a small tributary of the King River where I found the trout fishing to be OK but not as good as it has been. With the recent hot weather, the water has warmed up a bit and I sensed that the trout are just starting to slow down a bit in the smaller, rural type streams. I still managed to catch a few, but the larger trout seemed to be a bit on the lean side, indicating that they’re not feeding as readily as they could be. This is common for the middle of November, but not this early in the season - an obvious effect of the recent heat wave.

This is only the small rural type streams that are exposed to the sun and have little water flow. The larger rivers like the Ovens and Kiewa are all still flowing hard and cold, and will do for a while yet. The yellowbelly are still going nuts around the region and I have had good reports from all three of the major yellowbelly lakes this week - Lake Hume, Lake Eildon and Lake Nillahcootie. Remember, Lake Hume and Eildon are the trophy lakes where the big

yellowbelly hang out, and Lake Nillahcootie is the place to go if you’re after a feed of fresh fish. A few redfin are now starting to turn up from around the region as well. Many anglers targeting yellowbelly are catching some massive redfin up to 46cm long in Lake Hume, and I have had a few reports of redfin being caught in some of the smaller waterways from around the region as well. Many anglers are reluctant to tell me exactly where they catch their redfin, and with good reason. But I know Sambell and Kerferd lakes have produced a few small redfin recently, as well as the lower reaches of a few of the local creeks. For big reddies though, once again try Lake Hume.

While I was prepared to give my new baby all the love, warmth, protection, nourishment and breastmilk I could provide, I quickly realised that if I attempted to do all this, I was going to have to accept some love and nourishment back into myself or I would very quickly fall in a heap of tears and exhaustion. Accepting and acknowledging the help that was being offered from my village of family, friends and community of health practitioners was the best thing I did during those early weeks of being a new mum. I found that the more I entrusted others to nourish me with love, emotional support, food, gifts, time and breast feeding assistance, the more energy and focus I could pour into being the parent I wanted to be. Acknowledging that at times I need this help and accepting it is a skill I hope to take with me during the rest of my parenting career.

Rutherglen Show, 1880 THE first Rutherglen Show was held, and it rained. The Wangaratta Band was in attendance, and must have felt quite at home – it always rained, they used to say, for the Wangaratta Show, and only by moving the date could they escape it. Shows at Rutherglen began in 1878, but it was not until the Rutherglen Agricultural and Horticultural Society was started, with Donald Brown as the secretary, that shows as we know them today were staged. In spite of the rain, it was a great success.
IF anyone can make zucchini sexy, it’s the Greeks. It is just about the blandest tasting vegetable there is. I actually love zucchini ribbons in salads, but you can’t taste very much zucchini itself. It’s all the dressing and extra flavours! These make a great party food because they reheat really well. Or you could make them bigger and have them with eggs for breakfast – or dinner! I would happily scoff these down for dinner any day! Method Preheat oven to 180C/350F. Grate the zucchini and place into a large colander. Sprinkle with ¼ tsp. salt, toss with your fingers and leave to sweat for 30 minutes. Working a handful at a time, squeeze out the excess water (as much as you can) and place the zucchini in a bowl. Add the batter ingredients (except oil spray) and mix to combine. Spray two baking trays with oil. Dollop heaped tablespoons onto the trays, then use your fingers to shape them into cylinder “tater-tot/potato gem” shapes. Spray with oil. Bake for 25 minutes, swapping the trays at around 20 minutes, or until golden brown and a crunchy crust forms on the surface. Serve with lemon wedges and Tzatziki, if using. Minted Yoghurt Mix together ingredients and set aside for at least 10 minutes before serving. These reheat well in the oven. Place them on a baking tray and reheat in a hot oven around 400°F/200°C and

cook until water has evaporated. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. Serve with red rice vinegar or a dipping sauce. Ingredients > 500gm zucchinis > ¼ tsp salt Batter sliced > ¾ cup spring onions, finely ) (white and pale green parts only > 2 garlic cloves, crushed > 1 cup panko breadcrumbs > 2 eggs, lightly beaten > 150gm feta cheese, crumbled > ½ cup Parmesan cheese (or se) shredded cheddar or tasty chee ano oreg d drie > 1 tbsp > ½ cup plain flour > Oil spray Minted yoghurt (optional) > 1 cup plain Greek yoghurt > ½ tbsp lemon juice (or > ½ tbsp extra virgin olive oil more) ped > 2 tsp fresh mint, finely chop > Salt and pepper

THEY say that everything old is new again and it certainly seems to be the case when it comes to the traditional high tea. It’s something we used to associate with a time when women wore hats and gloves and eating fussy little cakes while drinking tea from a dainty china cup was a big deal. Generations later thought it was daggy, but now people are dressing up and queuing up to pay an arm and a leg to lift their little fingers in the air before scoffing tea and scones. While the attraction of this kind of formality is mostly lost on me, when champagne and crustless sandwiches are on the menu it does spark my interest. What interchange are you on about? NO, I haven’t lost my marbles and am talking about the credit card charges that we pay to the providers with each transaction that is made on a card. Interchange fees are set by the card companies – such as MasterCard and Visa - and are put in place to encourage banks to choose their brand for customer use. The merchant (the business selling you the item) pays a fee for every transaction they put on a card to their bank, which is the bank accepting the card payment. The merchant’s bank then hands the fee to the customer’s bank. Sounds very simple doesn’t it, but the fee paid depends on the payment method. It is not unusual for merchants to hand on these interchange fees through higher prices

Some merchants (and Aldi are one) have a surcharge for customers paying by card which must be communicated to the cardholder. In 2003 the Reserve Bank introduced a cap on interchange fees and the average interchange fee was reduced by about 40 per cent. If you look at percentages, the
interchange fee in Australia is about 0.5 per cent. Europe is in the process of introducing a cap of 0.3 per cent on credit cards and 0.2 per cent on debit cards. Consumer group Choice is accusing MasterCard, Visa and the banks of funding misleading research aimed at heading off a possible lower cap on the maximum interchange fees that can be charged. Choice says the worst offender is MasterCard, which has been funding a “phoney” campaign against a possible move by the Reserve Bank to further force down interchange fees. And of course we presently have a Senate enquiry into credit cards, which could, among other things recommend the lowering of interchange fees. MasterCard and others contend

Where a surcharge is charged for paying by card, they should consider paying by another payment method that does not attract a surcharge, like cash. But with a reward card, it is just possible that you can get more reward points than they will lose by paying the surcharge. The best advice I can give you is in general make sure you pay off the whole balance of the card each month before the due date and within the interest free period. Those who pay off their entire card debit and never make cash advances will pay no interest at all. Make sure though that you have it diarised so you don’t forget.
