Making the Myrtleford Bowls Club world class

PRESIDENT of the Myrtleford Bowls Club, Lance Symons, prides himself on instilling positivity and inclusivity at the club and continues to do so with his proposal to add synthetic grass and a canopy for the green.

Earlier this year, Mr Symons met with the Alpine Shire Council to present his plans for the club to gain some funding for the project.

As the bowls club is not for profit, Mr Symons said financial assistance is crucial for the almost $3 million project to go ahead.

“To get the whole project over the line, we need financial input for sure from federal and state governments as well as the Alpine Shire Council in addition to a contribution on a much smaller scale from the club,” he said.

“Because the club itself is a not for profit community club we don’t have a million dollar bank roll, the money goes back into the club for the benefit of the members and all of the users.”

Mr Symons first started working on the project in October of 2021 when he presented the idea to the Myrtleford Bowls Club board of directors.

The need for a facility such as this was once again highlighted this year as the women’s Victorian Regional Bowls Championships had to be played in Moama due to there not being a suitable bowls club in regional Victoria, which a team from the Ovens and Murray region took part in and won.

“It just highlights that the North East in particular could do with more top class sporting facilities in a game such as ours,” he said.

Winter Worm Woes

IN Victoria, particularly after a wet summer, intestinal worms can become a major problem for our ruminant friends.

Cattle and small ruminants, including sheep, alpacas and goats are susceptible to several worm species found in this area including scour worms and the barber’s pole worm.

All worms can lead to ill thrift and sometimes death.

A common winter worm is the barber’s pole worm, and it can be difficult to detect until an animal is very ill.

This is because they tend not to cause scouring, but instead live off blood and protein, causing hypoproteinemia (bottle jaw) and anaemia.

You may see thin animals that are weak, get puffed easily, and have white gums.

Barber’s pole worms have a short life cycle, meaning worm burdens can

build up quickly, potentially leaving owners surprised by a suddenly ill animal.

Once they are at this stage, often not a lot can be done for them, therefore it is vital that good worm management practices are in place, before such issues occur.

Good worm management involves correct grazing management to create low worm risk paddocks, testing for worms at the correct life stage and time of year, drenching with the correct drench at the right time of the year and managing the risk of worm resistance.

Good information about worm management can be found through Worm Boss, the Agriculture Victoria website or from your local vet.

The beginning of the snow season

THE snow season is finally beginning with some of the mountains announcing the opening of their ski lifts.

Falls Creek has an average snow depth of 21cm and it was expected to increase to up 25cm with a snow storm on Sunday.

As of June 16, they had three ski lifts open, and the Windy Corner Toboggan Park opened on Saturday.

Mt Hotham is reporting an average of 30cm across the mountain and have two lifts expected to open.

All of the cross country trails are currently open.

The Summit Quad and Summit trainer opened on Friday June 16 and with more snow in the forecast, expect more terrain to open shortly.

Ski School is open from Saturday June 17 with Mighty Mites, Kids Club, Group and Private Lessons all available to book.

All rental, retail and food and beverage outlets are also ready to welcome guests to the resort.

Please note that guests are not allowed in the ski field after 5pm under any circumstances.

At Dinner Plain, the average snow depth is 5cm and none of the ski lifts are open.

Mt Buffalo is reporting poor snow overall with Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley both closed for tobogganing due to only having a dusting of snow.

Dingo Dell Café is open for food and beverage.

There will be no toboggan rental at Mt Buffalo this year with rental instead available in Porepunkah, Myrtleford and Ovens.

None of the cross country trails are open yet and there is only a small amount of snow for sightseeing remains of the last snow storm.

Chains are required to be carried for all resorts and fitted where instructed.

This Day in History, 1942

ON this day in 1942 Wangaratta became the control centre for the North East area of the VAOC, an organisation of volunteers who watched the skies over Australia for both friendly and enemy aircraft.

The Control Centre was set up on the top floor of the Commonwealth Bank at the corner of Murphy and Reid Streets.

One room had a large mapping table, so that aircraft locations and movements could be constantly plotted from observations phoned in from district outposts.

The new service was not yet active on this day in 1942 but the room was ready and volunteer spotters were being called for.

The organisation provided a valuable service, and saved a number of civilian aircraft, which were in danger from engine malfunction at night, by directing them to safe landing fields which were equipped with landing flares.

BOOK REVIEW

Travel the world with books

animated fi lm ‘The Breadwinner’.

Set in contemporary Afghanistan, it follows the story of Parvana and Shauzia 20 years after they had to disguise themselves as boys to support their families.

The too-small cage where she lives is clearly hurting her body and mind, but she is stuck, as the rainforest where she was born is now a palm oil plantation.

adventure ‘A Message Through Time’, 11-year-old Felix is visiting France when he is fl ung back 1700 years to Ancient Rome, dragging his unwilling 15-year-old stepsister Zoe with him.

ONE of the best things about reading is its power to take us to places we’ve never been, and some we may never get the chance to visit.

This week we have a number of books to give away which transport readers to Afghanistan, Indonesia, Japan, France, and even Ancient Rome, and build understanding of those living in diff erent circumstances.

Deborah Ellis’ ‘One More Mountain: A Parvana Story’ is the fi fth book in the series which began with 2000’s ‘Parvana’, a story which was made into the award-winning

When the Taliban was defeated in 2001, they began to rebuild their lives, but everything changed in 2021 when the Taliban rose to power again, impacting women and their hard-won freedoms.

In ‘One More Mountain’, the two friends and their community face new dangers from an old enemy as Afghanistan is once again under siege.

Also inspired by real-life experience is ‘Berani’ by Michelle Kadarusman, in which Malia, Ari and Ginger’s three distinct voices tell the story of Ginger Juice, an orangutan kept captive in a cage in Indonesia.

Fantasy and time travel are fantastic genres which allow us to slip into diff erent times and places, and ‘The Lost Ryu by Emi Watanabe Cohen, and ‘A Message Through Time’ by Anna Cidor do just that.

In ‘The Lost Ryu’, set in Japan, 10-yearold Kohei teams up with his neighbour to search for the truth, both about Kohei’s family history and the disappearance of giant dragons (ryu) that fought in World War 2; all that remain of the ryu are their smaller cousins, which can fi t in your palm.

This is a story of magic, a mysterious family legacy, and the lengths to which people will go to protect those they love.

Finally, in Anna Ciddor’s action-packed

When the pair return to their own time, they realise they have brought a highclass Roman girl with them, and they must navigate the strange Roman world to return her to her family before time runs out.

* We have copies of ‘One More Mountain’ by Deborah Ellis (RRP, $16.99), ‘Berani’ by Michelle Kadarusman (RRP, $16.99), ‘The Lost Ryu’ by Emi Watanabe Cohen (RRP, $16.99) and ‘A Message Through Time’ by Anna Ciddor (RRP, $17.99), all published by Allen & Unwin, to give away to one lucky reader.

Making the Myrtleford Bowls Club world class

■ From page 1

He said if the plans go ahead, the club would become the first world class bowls facility of its kind in the North East of Victoria, which he says is desperately needed.

Mr Symons said there would be many benefits an upgrade could bring to the club, from its environmental impacts, to increasing participation.

“Major benefits that flow through from it will be tourism, it will have health benefits as the Teflon roofline blocks out the UV rays completely so it’ll reduce the risk of skin cancers by way of eliminating UV rays while people are playing bowls,” he said.

“Environmentally, it has great benefits as you won’t need the machinery as much as the grass is synthetic meaning less carbon emissions and things of that nature as well.

“It would be more inclusive, we

would be able to cater for more schools to have bowls as a non-contact sporting option in the curriculum without fear of it being cancelled due to weather.”

According to Mr Symons, there are already facilities such as this in Melbourne and each of the club managers he’s spoken to have had nothing but glowing reviews.

So far, the proposal has garnered support from many including letters of support from Helen Haines, Tim McCurdy, the Chamber of Commerce in Myrtleford, Marion College, Alpine Health and the Myrtleford Lions Club.

As well as Myrtleford Bowl’s Club’s proposal for the canopy and synthetic surfaces, Mr Symons said other clubs in the region such as the Wodonga and Wangaratta bowls clubs have also started showing interest in similar projects.

FEATURE STORY

“If we were successful as well as Wodonga and Wangaratta, that would be a wonderful outcome for bowls in the North East of Victoria so it’s not just a selfish project that we’re trying to achieve,” he said.

“The project will give the Ovens and Murray Bowls region as well as the North East area something else to put its hat on as well.”

Mr Symons said once they have the funding and the local council support, it won’t take long for the project to get off the ground and he is hoping there will be money set aside in the 2023/24 budget that will be officially adopted at the council meeting on June 27.

“It’s a matter of knocking on doors and pushing to get the project into the pipeline,” he said.

“It is a slow grind but if we’re not persistent we won’t get there.”

Settle in for some holiday reading

WITH school holidays on the horizon, there will be more time for avid readers to snuggle under a blanket and immerse themselves in a good book - in between enjoying our crisp winter weather.

This week, we are giving away a pack of three great books from publisher Allen & Unwin geared towards primary school-aged readers, which are sure to warm up those chilly days ahead.

The second in the Miss Mary-Kate Martin’s Guide to Monsters series by Australian author Karen Foxlee, ‘The Trouble with the Two-Headed Hydra’ (illustrated by Freda Chiu) follows the reserved but inquisitive Mary-Kate as she and her mother visit Galinios, an idyllic Greek island filled with history.

An ancient mosaic has been unearthed at the local sardine processing plant, and Professor Martin must investigate, but a message asking for help changes everything.

Could the local legend of the Two-Headed Hydra be more than a story?

Armed with her glitter pens and strawberryscented notebook, Miss Mary-Kate Martin is determined to find the answers.

In Ursula Dubosarsky’s ‘Hercules Quick’s Big Bag of Tricks’ (illustrated by Andrew Joyner), the title character and his tadpole friend Sylvie take on a series of odd jobs for their eccentric neighbours.

Hercules Quick wants to be a magnificent

magician; he just needs a special box of magic tricks, but the box is expensive and Hercules doesn’t have any money.

Luckily, he lives in a big apartment block with his Aunt Alligator, and has plenty of neighbours prepared to pay for his help.

Whether it’s babysitting for the Elks, springcleaning for Queen Claude, or helping Professor Calamari choose the perfect bow tie, no job is too odd for Hercules Quick.

His neighbourhood adventures teach him that the best magic trick of all is not a trick.

‘Spellhound’, the first in the Dragons of Hallow series from Liann Tanner (illustrated by Sally Soweol Han), is a fascinating fantasy tale about the search for a dragon which has turned several characters’ worlds upside-down.

Set in Hallow, a country that loves secrets almost as much as it loves green jelly babies, the story centres on a giant magical pup, a child queen and a very small ‘minch-wiggin’ with the unfortunate title of ‘Destroyer-of-Dragons’.
